FIRST THINGS

FIRSTFirst steps, first tooth, first bike, first kiss, first career, first car,

first home, first child, first... Life firsts. What makes them so exciting? I’m not sure what yours is right now, but mine is writing my first column as editor of The Promoter. Exciting? Certainly is. When I entered The Promoter offices last week, this wonderful little team appeared (from the heavens, I’m convinced.) One by one these professionals welcomed me, toured, guided, explained, encouraged–explained some more, encouraged some more. And then they passed the baton. Run with it, they said, and ask for anything you need. I liked it. I instantly suspected that each person not only grasps but lives the concept of firsts. Already I felt the energy of a common vision, a common goal. That’s the way it is with good teams. You get different personalities

and styles. You find out who watches Coronation Street, Grey’s, Jeopardy and who doesn’t. Who reads what, and how. You quickly learn who drinks coffee and who has a wicked sense of humour (I am happy to report we’re all good!) Every one of us has different stories of life firsts. The key is to remember that within each first there sits a secret: A promise, a wish, a hope, opportunity, anticipation, a built-in duty to make the most of it–give it your best–whatever it is. Now through summer of 2012, as we hit weekend yard sales, sit on docks, boats or benches, appreciate our doctors, lace up, tune up or show up for charity events, tour public gardens and indulge in the wares of our creative local merchants, let’s do it through the eyes of this tremendous extended community to which we all belong. And let’s begin with this great first that unfolds this week: Unlock The Summer. Unlock it. Unleash it. Share it. First, enjoy it.

FENELON DIVAS DELIGHT

Annual Splash Into Summer a Hit

What a fabulous turn out for Fenelon Falls’ second annual Diva Night! The Splash into Summer Fashion Show featured a new location alongside the locks. The new venue showcased an informal, high energy fashion

show that displayed this summer– must-have items now available in our local shops. Divas Divas everywhere enjoyed ambiance, great meals and feature drinks served by local restaurants. Participating shops and stores offered great shopping incentives and fun gift giveaways. And, as Divas strutted their stuff from shop to shop, they were entertained by a live local band. The first 200 Divas who registered received fresh roses.

More than 60 gifts were presented to winning ballot holders drawn at Dollars Worth, the official Diva Headquarters. Organizers extend appreciation to all sponsors and participants who helped to make this event a stand-out.

NEW DEVELOPMENT An application to develop a new waterfront community on Pigeon Lake was approved by Council on Tuesday. William O’Neill’s inpiration has moved one step closer to reality. Even at this late stage there was still some opposition to the project. Mr. Rob Tonus, Projects Manager of the Gaming Nature Centre was concerned about the potential impact on wildlife and fish habitat and asked that the project be deferred until these concerns had been appropriately addressed. Mr. Peter Lawless a lawyer representing Mr. O’Neill advised Council that the project had addressed all these concerns and had been reviewed to the satisfaction of the City Staff. A brief discussion ensued among the Councillors and the motion to proceed was approved. The new development is situated at the southeast corner of Pigeon Lake Road and King’s Lake Road in Ward 14.

BRIDGE DETOURSRemember the reconstructing of the Bridge on Hwy 24? And the inordinate amount of time residents had to detour around secondary roads to get where they were going? All future bridge rehabilitation projects that require detour routes for extended periods of time causing premature deterioration of the detour route will include the costs of rehabilitating the detour route in the bridge project budget as a separate line item and be rehabilitated following the reopening of the bridge structure. A report from Staff with recommendations is to be presented to Council no later than the last Council Meeting in June, 2012.

SAND DOME REPLACEMENTIn 2O11, the City undertook a structural review of all the sand domes owned by the City in order to provide a baseline infrastructure assessment for possible replacement and repair. Council approved the demolition and replacement of the Bobcaygeon (Verulam) Sand Dome with a ‘fabric type ‘structure in the estimated amount of $75,000.

TRENT SEVERN WATERWAY Council reacted to the planned cuts by the Federal Government related to the Trent Severn Waterway and the potential economic impact to the City of Kawartha Lakes, the TSW Region and Eastern Ontario including the Rideau Canal relating to reductions in the length of the Operating Season. Tourism in Kawartha Lakes accounts for more than $100 million dollars per year in economic activity and hundreds of jobs directly related to our recreational waters. The City of Kawartha Lakes cannot afford to compromise the economy in these present difficult economic times. Council

unanimously supported a resolution to accelerate efforts by the City to urge the Federal Government to re-think the impact of the planned cuts and to further encourage MP Barry Devolin to intercede on our behalf.

THE BOBCAYGEONARENA UPGRADE

In an unusual move, a late entry on the agenda was a motion to approve the replacement of the refrigeration plant at the arena. The existing direct expansion refrigeration system was built in 1954. The floor and the boards of the rink are also to be replaced. It appeared Councillor Brian Junkin was concerned that if something isn’t done quickly, both the Fiddle and Step Dance and the Fall Fair would be adversely affected. In a rare show of unanimity Councillor Pat Warren brought up the issue and Council approved the request that the Mayor and Clerk be authorized to execute the contract to award this project. A-Con Construction Limited of Woodbridge is the company that has been awarded the contract in the amount of $790,019.

POLICING COSTS IN ONTARIO ON THE RISE

Mayor McGee put forward a request that the City of Kawartha Lakes support the efforts of the Mayor’s Coalition for Affordable, Sustainable, Accountable Policing; and that a donation of $1,000.00 be

Page 6: June 1 2012

6 June 1, 2012 - The Promoter

forwarded to the Mayor’s Coalition to cover projected costs of the analysis. The amount will be funded from Miscellaneous Corporate items. In 2011 a task force was formed that provided Council with a report last September 2011 dealing with policing for the City of Kawartha Lakes. Similar projects have been undertaken by other municipalities over the last few years. In an effort to coordinate all the various studies a newly created Mayors Coalition will concentrate their efforts on the single issue for the whole Province to assist all municipalities to achieve an affordable police service with a cost that can be sustained in future years. Council approved the request.

TOURISM PRIORITY, CANAL HOURS UNCHANGED

The Honourable Peter Kent, Canada’s Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, today welcomed visitors to the canals managed by Parks Canada. The navigation season for most of the canals opens today across the country. “Canada’s historic canals offer a unique way to experience Canada and the many communities along these waterways.” “Our Government recognizes the importance of these canals to the tourism industry and the many communities that rely of them. We are committed to ensuring all our iconic destinations remain cornerstones of the Canadian tourism experience.” “In order to give communities, visitors and businesses enough time to make adjustments to the reduced navigation seasons, the length of the 2012operating season at Canada’s canals will remain

unchanged.” “As we implement changes to next year’s navigation season, Parks Canada will work closely with local stakeholders, Members of Parliament and partners to minimize, where possible, the impacts of these changes on neighbouring communities and partners in the tourism community,” concludedKent. Under the 2012 Federal Budget, Parks Canada is adjusting the duration of operating seasons and hours of operation at national parks, canals andnational historic sites when tourism demand is lowest. For canals, this means Parks Canada will be aligning its seasons, hours of operation and personal service offer to better reflect patterns of visitation.

THINK OUTSIDE THE CARCity of Kawartha Lakes Residents

Up To Commuter Challenge

No need to rev your car engine—or use gas–when you can make a new sound on your way to work. Listen: Walk and roll! For the seventh consecutive year, the 2012 Commuter Challenge returns to the City of Kawartha Lakes from June 3-9. During that week, local residents, families and workplaces are asked to find active and environmentally-friendly ways to get to work, school and other places. Walking, cycling, running, jogging, inline skating and using public transit are all encouraged. Working from home and carpooling also count as part of the Challenge. The Commuter Challenge is a nation-wide competition to determine the community with the highest participation rate. It covers the greatest distance using active and sustainable modes of transportation. The City of Kawartha Lakes will again compete against other similar-sized communities across Canada. “Participating in the Commuter Challenge has many benefits for your health, the environment and your wallet,” says Lisa Kaldeway, Health Promoter with the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit. “We encourage as many people, school communities and workplaces as possible to get involved, especially when civic pride is on the line.” Individuals and workplaces can register the activity or sustainable commute starting on June 3 at www.commuterchallenge.ca.

COTTAGE WARS

A Timely, Topical Summer

Read

June is an excellent time to launch your summer reading list. If you enjoy something light, humourous, and

somewhat thought-provoking, says author David Hersey,

consider reading COTTAGE WARS. COTTAGE WARS is a new work of fiction, describes Hersey, in which one set of neighbours, the Etheringtons, is desirous of taking over their neighbours’ property and seemingly have the complicity if not the support of the local officials to do so. The Etheringtons, however, along with the officials, fail to take into account the determination

of the Wilkins, a couple of seniors to remain on their property. There follows a description of events at Planning Meetings, the OMB and, in one case, upsetting dealings with an allegedly corrupt police officer. If this appears too serious and perhaps too close to real life for you, the author inserts a “whodunit” aspect which leaves the reader puzzled at the end. Whether a cottage or city dweller, the reader will easily identify with some of the characters and situations described in this novel–or at least know of someone who has faced similar circumstances. Those who have read COTTAGE WARS reported it to be funny, frustrating and thought-provoking. COTTAGE WARS, by David Hersey, is available from several distributors in the Kawarthas. One is Bob Burns’ Books in Fenelon Falls and another is Kent Books in Lindsay. One outlet decided recently to remove the book from its shelves for unspecified reasons. See www.cottagewarsbook.com for more information about the book and distributors.

David Hersey was born in Montreal, Quebec, in 1941. After secondary school, he attended the University of Windsor and graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor’s degree in English and History. He began his teaching career in Barrie, Ontario, before moving to London in 1966. He retired in 1994 and now lives in London with his second wife, Sandy for the winter months and at their cottage outside Coboconk, Ontario, for the spring and summer. He has three children and three grandchildren.

Shimano Increases Prize Structure Shimano North America, the international manufacturer of top quality rods and reels, and already a significant sponsor of the 2012 Canada/US Walleye Tournament has increased the level of prizes it is making available to competitors in the return of this historic event. Bob Mahoney, Northern Marketing Manager, of Shimano, explained, “When Shimano stepped up last February as the very first fishing tackle company to sponsor the tournament, we did it primarily just to help out, to help the organizing committee advertise a real good prize, our Mystery Weight Award valued at approximately $1,000, to attract entries into what we considered to be a worthwhile event. Now, three months later, we can see what a great job this group is doing and they deserve even more support. They are up to over 95 teams already and there is only room for about 30 more. And we haven’t just come up with a bunch more prizes; we’ve got a real fun way for people to earn them, our very own Shimano version of the one armed bandit and with $3,500 worth of prizes available to be won!” Here is how it works: At the Sunday, June 10th, weigh-in, at the Bobcaygeon Fairgrounds at approximately 2 pm, teams approaching the weigh scales and wearing an identifiable piece of Shimano clothing have the opportunity to reach into an air driven ticket machine. Out of the 125 QR coded tickets flying through the air, they can pick one. Taking that ticket to the Shimano booth in the

tournament exhibit area at the Bobcaygeon Curling Club will earn them Shimano products ranging anywhere from Shimano caps, T-shirts, and jackets, to Shimano Sustain reels, and Compre rods. Both members of the team with the QR code win. “I can’t wait to see the fun everyone will have with this promotion; it will be a win/win for everyone,” said Mahoney. For information on the Canada/US Walleye Tournament, anglers can periodically check: http://www.bobcaygeon.org/CanUsWalleyeTournament.html. Entries must be received no later than 5 pm, Monday, June 4, 2012. Information on Shimano products is at: http://fish.shimano.com/

Have you been to the Summit? If you’ve stood in front of the goose in Wawa, the big apple in Colborne, or had your picture snapped in the giant chair in Kinmount, it’s time to capture yourself at the Canada’s Fresh Water Summit. Did you even know there exists a nationally recognized and significant singularity within the serene waters of Balsam Lake? Right in the heart of the Trent-Severn Waterway lies Canada’s highest body of fresh water. At 256.5 meters above sea level, one can circumnavigate the world by seaworthy vessel. www.explorekawarthalakes.com/en/experience/trentsevernwaterway.aspWhether you travel west toward Lake Simcoe or east into Cameron Lake, both ways are downstream from Balsam Lake. To celebrate, embrace and promote Canada’s Fresh Water Summit, the beautiful village of Coboconk presents it’s 3rd Fresh Water Festival June 15 and 16. Better still, the Fresh Water Summit is now a two day event. Opening Ceremonies and the Boat Parade kick off the festival on Friday night at the Wharf. Come back on Saturday to participate in a variety of activities throughout the village. Visit Muskoka Breweries, Kawartha Winery, Kay’s Place, and Coboconk Foodland for onsite refreshments.

Aries (March 21 to April 20)Aries people are known as the pioneers of the zodiac. You are the first astrological sign and represent the Ram in Greek tradition. Because of this, one of the principle features of Aries states you like to be first. This is a double-edged sword! Beware your need to always push ahead; the back seat often provides a much better view.

Taurus (April 21 to May 21)Taurus is ruled by the planet Venus, the God of Love who imparts a sense of order and balance in your daily life. Your present phase promises all of these: love, order and equilibrium which you haven’t experienced for quite some time, Taurus. Revel in it!

Gemini (May 22 to June 22)This is your phase, Gemini, so we’d like to tell you about your full moon June 4. This moon in known in Europe as the flower or rose moon, but in Algonquin it’s the strawberry moon, the sixth moon of Creation, a time when strawberries are harvested. The medicine of the strawberry is reconciliation. It was during this moon cycle communities held their annual feasts, welcoming everyone home, regardless of their differences over the past year and letting go of judgments. Sounds like good advice, doesn’t it, Gemini?

Cancer (June 23 to July 23)The colours associated with Cancer, as you may or may not know, are silver and white. Hmmm... we’ll focus on white this phase. White – the colour of purity, cleanliness, and neutrality. It’s telling you to put some white in your life to clear away the clutter, give mental clarity, streamline your thoughts and actions and start fresh beginnings.

Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23)Every thing is coming up Leo! Go ahead and try all those new adventures you’ve been pondering; take those chances, because you just can’t go wrong. This is your time, Leo!

Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23)This phase calls on you to make a final decision,

Virgo. You’ve been meandering back and forth too long, tossing the coin, unable to find the necessary resolution. The time is now! (You won’t be sorry).

Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23)The time for regrets is over, Libra. Now it’s time to move ahead and face the music. Although you may not feel it, you are strong. You know that old saying, don’t you? “Your strength is as the strength of ten, because your soul is pure.” You will handle whatever lies before you.

Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22)The No. 1 issue of which you should be concerned at this time, Scorpio, is your health. Look after yourself! You are so important to the ones who love you, don’t you know? Please don’t risk any malady or any loss of well-being.

Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21)Don’t be afraid dear Sagittarius to trust a higher spirit; to put your worries in the hands of someone else. You may be pleasantly surprised at your lightened load.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20)The road has been bumpy, lately, hasn’t it, Capricorn? You must trust in your very own inner knowledge. Don’t let the little people fill your head with empty nonsense and vexation – you, and only you, know the true way.

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19 )Confucius says ...“Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.” Could this apply to you ‘round about now, Aquarius? Could this be the advice you are looking for? Revenge is not the answer; forgive and move on, for your own sake if nothing else!

Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20)Pisces, it’s family time for you right now. Enjoy those special moments that only the closeness of family can bring. Take in Settlers’ Day June 10 at Kawartha Settlers’ Village with someone you love. Savour the present and perhaps you’ll discover something about your family past, too.

Special events to launch the 60th Anniversary of the Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee begin June 2nd, 10:30 am at Cenotaph Park, Fenelon Falls. To mark this royal occasion, there is to be the creation of a unique flower garden at this historic site. The garden will feature a floral design, focusing on the “Queen’s Choice” of an emblem chosen from a contest held in Britain by pre-schoolers to celebrate this anniversary. After the ceremony and up to July 21st, visitors and Fenelon Falls residents are invited to sign a special Anniversary Card located on display at Sobey’s, Fenelon Falls. When our events conclude, the card will be sent to Buckingham Palace via the Government of Canada.

Fenelon Falls was chosen along with Markham, Ontario to receive Heritage and Cultural funding from the Federal Government to assist in hosting Jubilee Celebrations. Official Jubilee Kick-Off, 2 pm on July 21st on the Trent-Severn Waterway Island features a full day of British activities, concert bands and movies. The events come to you compliments of the Fenelon Falls and District Chamber of Commerce. On Cameron Lake waterfront, also beginning at 2 pm, the Boat Pageant will showcase competitors for prizes for the Best Decorated boats. Evening promises a wonderful firework display. Keep your eyes open for posters, memorabilia and other promotions throughout Southern Ontario.

FAMILY DINNER NIGHTYouth Cooking Program

“We had our Family Dinner Night on Friday, May 18,” says program coordinator, Diane Engelstad. “The kids made lasagnas in teams. They also made salad of baby leaf lettuce and homemade fresh bean and seed sprouts, and ice cream sandwiches for dessert. It was a great evening and their families were very proud. I think the kids love the sheer variety they encounter in cooking. Everyone can find ways to develop their own skills and interests in the kitchen and then share their talents with others.” Engelstad said Everol told the youth that if he has leftovers from a meal he will often take it to people he knows who would appreciate it. He also told them if they need help with a cooking project, or have any questions about cooking, “Feel free to call me so I can help you.” He said, “If I can help you with your cooking skills, it would make me feel good inside.”

WELCOME SUMMER

From Mayor Ric McGee

Summertime in Kawartha Lakes is the best time of year. There are lots of new events and businesses to support this year in addition to the businesses and events that have loyally served us for years.

Remember to shop! Shopping strengthens our local economy. Support our local farmers. Visit one of our numerous Farmer’s Markets, their farm gates or choose from locally produced products in our local

grocery stores. We received good news from our Members of Parliament along the Trent Severn Waterway that the 2012 Waterway Season will remain unchanged through to Thanksgiving Weekend. This is critical to our local economy as the locks in Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls are the busiest throughout the entire system. We will work with all levels of government and stakeholders along the Waterway to increase economic activity to grow an even stronger water based economy in Kawartha Lakes. Recently, Council and Senior Management met to strengthen our Strategic Priorities. The outcome identifies 4 major areas of focus: Tourism, Knowledge Economy in Water and Food, Aggregate Management and Creating Connections. The addition of Creating Connections to our Plan is exciting as it covers a broad range of areas such as Broadband Connectivity, Infrastructure and Transportation and most importantly, partnerships and relationships. Staff will now begin to frame the foundations of these priorities and we will provide regular updates in the future. I look forward to seeing you at Unlock the Summer and I want to invite you to the Fresh Water Summit on June 15 and 16 in Coboconk as we prepare for the longest day of the year. Look for more details in The Promoter. Have a safe and enjoyable summer in Kawartha Lakes. See you on the water!

AWARDS OF EXCELLENCESalute the Citizen of the Year

Lori Ann Moffatt is the newest Citizen of the year, as saluted by the Bobcaygeon Chamber of Commerce.

Among her accomplishments and service, Moffatt has worked closely with Settlers’ Village on their fund-raising events. Many times, she chaired the original Spring Fling, a co-venture between the Chamber of Commerce and Kawartha Settlers’ Village. The event has raised thousands of dollars to date. Moffatt has invested hours of energy and enthusiasm helping new business start-ups by providing them with business cards and other promotional materials. Until recently, she was the event coordinator for Bobcaygeon Minor Hockey fund-raising before she moved along to The Sturgeon Lake Thunder. She participated in bringing the splash pad to Bobcaygeon, scheduled to be in place this summer. The Awards of Excellence recipients also include: Clockwise: Patricia Brown, Employee of the Year. Keegan Bates, Outstanding Youth. Maicey Benjamin, Outstanding Service/Volunteer Organization. Kawartha Country Wines, Outstanding Business Achievement. Monk Funeral Service, Business Leader of the Year.

Canadian National Dance Championships

Local Competitors Seek Sponsors

Two talented members of our community were chosen by the Canadian National Dance Team to represent Canada at the World Dance Championship.

Sydney Williamson-Collin, 13, and Megan O’Neill, 16, will compete in the Junior and Adult categories respectively. The International Dance Organization (IDO), is a World Federation with a membership of more than 250,000 dancers representing 90 nations from six continents. The best dancers from around the World will dance for the World Championship Title. Canadian dancers are known to be some of the best in the World with several World titles to our credit. Auditions from the Canadian National Dance Team attracted some of the best dancers from across Canada, each vying for position on the team to represent CANADA at the World level. Dance is not recognized in Canada as a Sporting Event, even though many of these dancers train up to 7 days per week. They are as flexible as any gymnast, as graceful as figure skaters and as dedicated as any Olympic athlete. Dancers of this caliber train for countless hours and will represent our country with pride. The dancers are required to obtain their own sponsors and, as yet, have not secured major sponsorship or government support, reports Bonnie Dyer, Team Canada National Dance Director. She says any amount that can be donated to help sponsor these talented dancers will be appreciated. For information, please contact Bonnie Dyer (Team Director) at 1-705-689-1844,[email protected] or our own Marnie Williamson, Marnie’s Dance ‘n’ Kids, [email protected].

UNLOCK THE SUMMER GARDEN TOUR PART 1

by John BickBobcaygeon & District Horticultural Society

Unlocking the summer for gardeners means that much of the grunt work of mid-spring is complete. Trees, shrubs, perennials, summer bulbs and corms should be in the ground by now. Even tender annuals and late summer vegetable seed can now be planted safely. The many volunteers of the Horticultural Society have been busy this week in the 30+ Bobcaygeon public gardens which they plant and maintain every year. Thanks to those of you who supported the Plant Sale of May 26th . Some of the proceeds from the sale will help purchase manure, soil, mulch and plants for the public gardens. Let me take you on a tour of these public gardens. As you enter Bobcaygeon from Lindsay, you are greeted on the right by the three Esso Station planters of red and white begonias maintained by Carol Peters. Across the street, Diane Hearse tends to the Shea Park Entrance where spring bulbs, hosta and shrubs welcome pedestrians and cyclists. The Xeriscape (dry) Garden that surrounds the Ted Shea monument adds a splash of colour to the park throughout the season. Noreen and Brian Smith who designed this garden check on it regularly.

Native plantings under the Chimney Swift roost were planted by the Kawartha Field Naturalists. Moving on to the Municipal Service Centre, Elderberry Corner has a collection of bearded iris, echinacea, lily-of-the-valley and a variety of shade and rock garden plants. Other plantings at the Centre are found among the evergreen shrubberies, in the brick planters at the building entrances and in the raised circular stone bed. A collection of hens & chicks was planted in 2007 in the front of a hosta bed on the northwest corner of the Service Centre. To the right of the lower parking lot is the Friend’s Bed planted with daffodils, phlox, heuchera, lady’s mantle, sedum and hosta and a miniature yew. The limestone surround was installed in 2007 with a grant from the Bobcaygeon Legacy C.H.E.S.T. Fund. Dianne Seniuk is the captain of the volunteer team that is responsible for all these gardens. In charge of the Legion Corner gardens is Carolyn Styles and her crew. There is always something in bloom at this highly-visible spot. Tulips followed by iris, spirea, speedwell, daylilies and fall mums create an attractive showing . The King Street planter consisting of juniper, purple coneflower and begonias is cared for by Joy and Jerry Mous. Caroline Eden has taken on the task of revitalizing the bed at the corner of Boyd and East Street. She has also planted poppies in the planters installed this year below the two signs on the Bridge of Heroes. Join us next issue, June 15, for Unlock the Summer Garden Tour Part 2. In the meantime, good gardening!

FUTURE DOCTORS TRAINING

Right In The City of Kawartha LakesThe Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI), lead agency for family doctor recruitment in the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL), also coordinates training opportunities for those studying to become a doctor. This is a vital step in the recruitment process. Since 2005, KLHCI has coordinated, through the Rural Ontario Medical Program, the training in CKL of 191 medical students/residents in various stages of their education. An additional 19 are still

expected over the rest of this year. This training could not have been done without the assistance of our local family doctors and specialists. KLHCI sincerely thanks them for their time and commitment. May 28 – June 1, 2012 is a special learning week as KLHCI will host this year’s Rural Medicine Week. There will be five first-year medical students from Queen’s University visiting, learning and exploring the City of Kawartha Lakes. A special focus of the week is experiencing rural medicine and how it may differ from urban medicine. Each of the students has been placed with a local family doctor and will spend time during the day with the doctor observing their practice. Along with the clinic time, each of the students will be working ‘shifts’ in the Emergency and Surgical departments of the Ross Memorial Hospital. They will also learn suturing skills and casting of their arms at special training events. Exploring CKL will occur when they travel to Bobcaygeon to spend an afternoon enjoying some kayaking and having dinner at the Balsam Lake cottage of a local doctor. Cindy Snider, Recruitment & Retention Coordinator for KLHCI says, “The week is planned to be unforgettable and will hopefully encourage these medical students to pursue becoming a rural family doctor in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Previous participants have returned for further training which we view as a positive sign of their enjoyment of the area.” Andrew Veale, President of KLHCI, further says that, “This is truly an important learning experience for the students and we must thank our doctors, Ross Memorial Hospital, and the public for their support. If you see a medical student training with your family doctor or in the hospital, please feel free to encourage them to continue their studies here – and also thank the doctor who is providing the training.” KLHCI is a non-profit, charitable organization whose mandate is to recruit and retain family doctors for the City of Kawartha Lakes. Anyone wishing to be part of this community effort is invited to contact Cindy Snider, Recruitment & Retention Coordinator at 705-328-6098 or [email protected], or visit the KLHCI website at www.kawarthalakesdoctors.org.

Family Doctor Appreciation WeekAnnounces Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative

The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) invites the community to help celebrate the 3rd Annual Family Doctor Appreciation Week, June 4 to 8, 2012. This week will honour the many wonderful family doctors practicing in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Family doctors are essential to the health and vitality of our community. All citizens are invited t to take the time to extend their gratitude for the day-to-day and lifelong commitments that these doctors make. KLHCI plans to send letters of appreciation to all family doctors. Hand-made cards and posters of thanks from local school-aged children will accompany the letters. KLHCI will also recognize two family doctors with gift certificates for a weekend get-away for two to any Ontario Inns and Spas. Local businesses are encouraged to show their support throughout the week by displaying words of thanks and encouragement to family doctors on their organization’s signage. Simple acknowledgement of the week, such as “Family Doctor Appreciation Week, June 4 to 8” or other special words of thanks such as “Thank You to our Family Doctors” are some suggestions offered by KLHCI. KLHCI is a non-profit, charitable organization

whose mandate is to recruit and retain family doctors for the City of Kawartha Lakes. Anyone wishing to be part of this community effort is invited to contact Cindy Snider, Recruitment and Retention Coordinator at 705-328-6098 or [email protected]. Visit the KLHCI website at www.kawarthalakesdoctors.org.

ENCOURAGED TO SUPPORTAn Open Letter

Dear Neighbours:

Last year Bobcaygeon honored Dr. Steven Oldridge for 20 years of dedicated service, with a reception, cards and a donation to the charity of his choice. He happily selected the Kawartha North Family Health Team!

This year, it’s “up and running” and again deserves our support!

Please consider thanking your doctor, this year with a card or note, plus a donation to the Kawartha Family Health Team.

We hope you agree!

A PATIENT’S STORYThe Promoter Shares Letter of Appreciation

Last week, 94 year old William Makemson visited the hospital to personally thank some of the people whom he credits for saving his life back in January and getting him back home when he feared he’d

never see it again. William Makemson was unusually short of breath one night in January, he said, and he called 911. In the Emergency department, things were going dim. He thought, “I guess this is it,” but he was thankful that, at 94 years of age, he’d had a great life. Mr. Makemson was suffering from double pneumonia and heart failure, but thanks to the attention and care of the RMH team, he began feeling better and was eventually able to return home. “I appreciate my life,” he says, “And I owe it all to the doctors and the nurses and the technicians who cared for me. William can be reached at 878-4337. Normally we don’t share these stories, but in this case, William wants everyone to know his story. Please give him a call. He speaks slowly, but he’s a lovely man and a great interview. Have a great weekend! Kim CoulterRMH Employee & Community Relations705-328-6246 [email protected]

Kawartha Settlers’ Village

Word from the Gail Thomassen,General Manager

It is official, summer is coming! You may wonder where I get this insight, but just look around Settlers’ Village. Our lilacs are blooming, flowers are growing, buildings are being cleaned, and grass is growing. Best of all, our summer students are here. Steffanie, Jacqueline, Aline, are itching to get their hands dirty, and soon Jenna and Sara will be joining them. Please come by the Village to meet them and say hello. They are all wonderful ladies with impressive qualifications, interests and experience. Our program participants and Village guests will be delighted to see them brightening up the façade of the Village. We were impressed by all the applicants who submitted resumes and attended interviews. Everyone was well qualified and the interviews were all good. We have an exceptional youth work base to draw from. We thank all who applied. Our school program is booked for several days and our summer camp program is filling up. We have increased to 5 weeks of camp this year, with lots of fun activities, history, settlers’ lifestyle, crafts, games, nature trails, animals... The camps will run July 9-13, 16-20, 23-27, Aug 6-10 and 13-17. The fee is $100.00 per child, the second and additional siblings are $85.00 each. Please call the office 705-738-6163 or print the registration form online at www.settlersvillage.org. Congratulations to our newly appointed Honourary Directors, Ann Cleland, Byron Edney, Shane Maclane and Jean Pollock. This honour is bestowed to show our appreciation of the contributions made by a Director over a long period of time. These four people have been instrumental in the planning and growth of the Village. Their involvement has been incredible and is an inspiration to new volunteers. Thank you. Settlers’ Day is June 10. Just around the corner! We hope you will attend 10 am to 4 pm. T h e award winning Norwood High School Drill Team will re-enact the 1812 war, complete with musket firings, trappers, craftspeople, strawberry social, BBQ, and much much more. Come early and stay for the day, lots of great things to see and do! We are in need of people who will join our grounds team. If you like cutting the grass, trimming, cleaning buildings etc., we need your help. Please call Marion 705-738-6163. Have you seen our WOOT? It was built in 1902, right here in Bobcaygeon. Whether you know what it is or not, check it out on our website. Better still, come on in and find out for yourself!

The hot weather can cause serious concern for seniors, small children, people with chronic medical conditions including respiratory problems and heart conditions. It can seriously affect outside workers, too.Kawartha Lakes EMS provides the following tips for heat emergencies:• Stay inside cool buildings (air conditioned, fans

etc.)• Drink water frequently (constantly sipping.)• Wear light clothing.• Do as little exercise as necessary–if the work can

be delayed, all the better.• Frequently check in on the elderly, small children

and anyone who is ill.• Drink when you are thirsty.• Keep taking rest breaks. Rest in a cool, shady spot.

Use fans.• Wear light-coloured clothing made of cotton.• Do the heaviest work in the coolest time of

the day.

• Work in the shade.• For heavy work in hot areas, take turns with other

workers, so some can rest.• If you travel to a warm area for a new job, you

need time for your body to get used to the heat. Be extra careful the first 2 weeks on the job.

• If you work in protective clothing, you need more rest breaks. You may also need to check your temperature and pulse rate.

• If you think someone is overcome by heat (weak, tired, hot, flushed or unresponsive), call 911 immediately. Move the victim to the shade. Loosen his/her clothes. Wipe or spray his/her skin with cool water and fan him/her. You can use a piece of cardboard or other material as a fan.

Eyelight TherapyA Look into the Future

by Dr. Ian Horseman

Stimulation of the eye with light affects the contra-lateral (opposite) hemisphere of the brain. A new therapy now available in Bobcaygeon uses advanced glasses with four lights in each eye and different color lenses. If the right eye is non-dominant (weak eye), Eyelights will affect the left side of the brain, or the analytical portion of the brain. If the left eye is non-dominant, Eyelights will affect the right side, or creative portion of your thought processes. With Eyelights you have a choice of settings for either the right or left eye. If the lights are blinking brighter on the upper row, it will affect the temporal lobe (mentality/emotionality) of the brain greater. If the lights are blinking brighter on the bottom row, it will affect the parietal lobe (sensory/motor) greater. Upon fatigue, the non-dominant eye lateralizes.

When this occurs, it causes the brain to suppress the input that would normally be entering the brain. One eye stays dominant (looking at you), while the non-dominant eye lateralizes (looks at the doorknob). The brain is not able to look in two different directions and maintain input or focused thought processes. Since it is looking at two different objects, the brain will suppress the input from the non-dominant eye, recognizing only the information from the dominant eye. When this occurs, the rods and cones of the eye are not being brought up to the threshold and you get into a “use it or lose it” cycle. By stimulating the visual system you get global excitation of the brain. This is evidenced with an elevation in production of hormones and neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, epinephrine, and serotonin. After identifying the non-dominant eye we are now able to see what occurs in the neurological model as well as the mechanical model. A good way to show both is by muscle testing. Have the

patient put on their Eyelights with the lights blinking on their non-dominant eye. Wait through two or three sequences of the flashing lights and retest the group muscles again. You should now see that the muscles are facilitated or strong. When you lose input from the medial rectus muscles, you essentially decrease input to the erector spinae muscle group of the spinal column. This occurs in a homologous column (on the same side as the weak medial rectus muscle or non-dominant eye), and you will see rotational components of the spinal structures. On the side of medial rectus weakness you will see hypotonic (decreased tone) musculature. The opposite occurs on the dominant side, where you will see increased tone or hypertonic musculature. Spinal rotations away from the side of non-dominance are what you should find upon palpation and x-ray examination. The parietal lobe of the brain deals with sensory (input) and motor (output). A patient with motor problems such as Parkinson’s, tremors, MS, ALS, stability problems, sensory integration problems, numbness, or atrophy would benefit from the bottom row of lights blinking brighter. Athletes would also benefit from the bottom row of lights blinking brighter in order to increase physical performance. The temporal lobe of the brain deals with emotionality and mentality. If one has problems such as ADD, dyslexia, memory problems, speech and hearing problems, learning difficulties, forgetfulness, dementia, cloudy thought processes, or depression,

he would benefit from the top row of lights blinking brighter. When wearing Eyelights in order to increase mental function, lights should be blinking on the non-dominant eye with the TOP row of lights blinking brighter. When the lights are programmed with the top row blinking brighter, you must limit how long the glasses are being worn during each session. While Eyelights can be worn 3-4 times a day, you should avoid wearing them for more than 20-30 minutes each time. If a patient experiences headaches or eye fatigue, this may mean that they have worn the glasses for too long, and they should lessen the length of time during the next session. When wearing Eyelights in order to increase physical performance or motor function, lights should be blinking on the non-dominant eye with the BOTTOM row of lights blinking brighter. Patients who have experienced strokes, seizures, or other neurological damage should have a modified protocol. Each patient should be evaluated on an individual basis as to whether Eyelights are an appropriate therapeutic device for their particular disorder.

Nurse PractitionerComes to Omemee

Leanne Crump Excited About Practicing in a Small Community

A new nurse practitioner has begun practice at the medical centre in Omemee, as part of the City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team. Medical Receptionist, Summer Brown, also part of the Team, will arrange patient scheduling. Leanne Crump, R.N.(E.C.) comes to Omemee mid-career with experience with her own patients in Peterborough. She was instrumental in developing the nurse practitioner program at the Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay and has worked in many areas including chronic pain management, child and maternal health and community care. “I am really excited to be starting my practice as a Nurse Practitioner here in Omemee,” says

Crump. “I know there is a need for health care here and I am looking forward to being of assistance.” Formerly from Lakefield, Crump says she wanted to practice in a small town and will enjoy becoming part of the Omemee and area community. “It’s great to have Leanne on board,” says City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team Lead Physician, Dr. Eric Ready. “Nurse Practitioners can see patients for many of the same things family doctors can and are often able to spend more time on health education and disease prevention. Family doctors remain involved in the patients’ care,” he notes. Barry Marr, President of the community group that built the Omemee Medical Clinic is pleased to have a nurse practitioner on site. He said, “We welcome Ms. Crump to the community and hope she enjoys a long and fulfilling practice here.” As a nurse practitioner with the City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team, Crump will see patients at the Omemee Medical Centre. With Crump seeing patients on-site, physicians Dr. Jane Clay and Dr. John Ludwig are now able to take on more patients from Omemee. Patients must first register with Health Care Connect in order to join Dr. Clay or Dr. Ludwig. While registered patients may see Crump during their visits to the clinic, Dr. Clay or Dr. Ludwig will be their

official family doctor. Mike Perry, Executive Director of the City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team agrees. “It’s great to see growth in health care in our area. It’s about having care available for patients in the communities where they live.” Perry adds that having a Family Health Team with nurse practitioners also helps attract new doctors. Funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team has also placed nurse practitioners in Lindsay, Fenelon Falls and, most recently, Little Britain in just over a year.

To register with Dr. Clay or Dr. Ludwig, residents who do not have a family doctor are to contact Health Care Connect at 1-800-445-1822. Patients cannot be registered at the office.
