Personal Statement
My awareness of the political issues around the world has made me realise the impact politics has
on a country’s economic state which is why I have decided to choose this interdisciplinary course in
order to study it at a degree level. NEED A CATCHY INTRO
The revolutionary wave of anti government protests, civil war and riots that spread amongst the
Arab world triggered my interest in gaining a wider understanding on the world around me and the
relationship between economics and politics. For example, the Egyptian revolution that occurred in
2011 highly affected the Egyptian economy, causing tourism to fall dramatically; hence the decrease
in the country’s GDP. In addition, studying philosophy would be very useful as it will not only give
me a deeper insight into the subject itself; however will provide me with the foundations of being
able to question and reason rationally, as well as facilitating ethical reflection. At just the age of 15, I
found myself questioning various political ideologies, attending protests present in the UK and
reporting back people’s thoughts and opinions on an online youth channel. This enabled me to
become more and more curious and start researching many political and economical issues that
occur around the world.
Studying economics has given me an insight on the global issues such as poverty, the economic
objectives and the policy’s made by the government and the bank of England that are used within
the UK. In addition to studying this profound subject for my A-levels, I have read several books
related to Economics in order to give me a further and greater understanding of the subject. For
example, a book I have recently read is ‘A Guide to Game theory’ which is about decision making in
the world around us and the behaviour of firms. In addition I read the ‘Economist’ on a regular basis
which has widened my knowledge of the subject as well as enabling me to constantly learn new
information about things that are happening around the world. English literature has provided me
with analytical skills, the ability to reason and criticize and the ability to express myself clearly.
Taking Media studies as one of my A-levels has enabled me to learn about different representations
in the media and there portrayals, and has provided opportunities for me to work in a team in order
to produce a final product. Recently, I was fortunate enough to be able to shadow the ITV presenter
and journalist Alastair Stewart, who not only provided me with great knowledge on the subject of
Politics, but I was also able to gain insight into his exemplary communication skills and confidence.
I strongly believe that applying experience in whatever I do is just as important as a strong
educational background in order to be successful at university, as well as in a future career. Being
my school’s representative and being part of the student union throughout most of my school years
has augmented my communication skills, as well as time management, organization and public
speaking. This has been very useful as I believe that I now have the ability to face any issues that
may occur in everyday life which will benefit me at university. I recently took part in a competition
at the Bank of England. Not only did this require in-depth knowledge of economics but it also
boosted my confidence in public speaking as the presentation was in front of a group of economists,
one of whom was Mark Carney. My bilingual abilities include reading and writing Arabic articulately
which has enabled me to read Arabic newspapers in order to differentiate between the western and
the Middle Eastern point of view. Being part of the debating society at UCL academy has advanced
my abilities to argue convincingly which has therefore enabled me to tackle political arguments well,
as well dealing with macroeconomic issues.
