july/august 2012 - joyful noise

The Joyful Noise In early July, as the United States celebrates its 236 th birthday, our Presbyterian General Assembly will gath- er for the 220 th time. From June 30 to July 7, commissioners from every presbytery and many local churches will meet in Pitts- burgh, Pennsylvania to discuss, deliberate, pray, and vote on matters of importance to our denomination. There’s an old saying in church circles that “Presbyterians are denser in Pittsburgh than anywhere else in the nation.” How you read that sentence will either bode well or poorly for the upcoming meetings. I’ll hope for the best. The theme for the Assembly is “Walking, Running, Soaring into Hope,” based on Isaiah 40:31 – “Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Six hundred and eighty-eight commissioners will take part in the Assembly. They will be divided into twenty committees to consider each recommendation or overture before it is presented to the whole body. Four persons will “stand” for the office of Moderator. (Candidates do not “run” for office by actively campaign- ing, but “stand” for the position, ready for God’s call through the vote of the Assembly.) These four come from diverse geographical regions of the United States (North Carolina, western Texas, Illinois, and New Jersey). I am sure they represent the theological diversity of Presbyterians as well. Almost 200 others will be present as Advisory Delegates, with voice but not vote, in order to represent our mission workers, theological students, and young adult members. More than a hundred overtures will be considered. Some duplicate others and some contradict others, so the number of those that get passed will be significantly less. Gradye Parsons, the denomination’s stated clerk thinks most of the work will fall into the following categories: Structure (What kind of council life does the denomination need going forward and are changes needed to the Form of Government we recently adopted?) Unity (How are we to relate to one another as sisters and brothers in Christ?) Practical Theology (What is our understanding of marriage and our pas- toral role in it?) Peacemaking (How can Presbyterians contribute to peace in Israel- Palestine?) and Outreach (How do Presbyterians respond to immigration?) Wauwatosa Presbyterian Church's July/August 2012 edition of the Joyful Noise Newsletter

TRANSCRIPT

The Joyful Noise In early July, as the United States celebrates its 236th birthday, our Presbyterian General Assembly will gath-er for the 220th time. From June 30 to July 7, commissioners from every presbytery and many local churches will meet in Pitts-burgh, Pennsylvania to discuss, deliberate, pray, and vote on matters of importance to our denomination. There’s an old saying in church circles that “Presbyterians are denser in Pittsburgh than anywhere

else in the nation.” How you read that sentence will either bode well or poorly for the upcoming meetings. I’ll hope for the best. The theme for the Assembly is “Walking, Running, Soaring into Hope,” based on Isaiah

40:31 – “Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles,

they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”

Six hundred and eighty-eight commissioners will take part in the Assembly. They will be divided into twenty

committees to consider each recommendation or overture before it is presented to the whole body. Four persons will “stand” for the office of Moderator. (Candidates do not “run” for office by actively campaign-

ing, but “stand” for the position, ready for God’s call through the vote of the Assembly.) These four come from diverse geographical regions of the United States (North Carolina, western Texas, Illinois, and New Jersey). I am sure they represent the theological diversity of Presbyterians as well.

Almost 200 others will be present as Advisory Delegates, with voice but not vote, in order to represent our

mission workers, theological students, and young adult members.

More than a hundred overtures will be considered. Some duplicate others and some contradict others, so the number of those that get passed will be significantly less. Gradye Parsons, the denomination’s stated clerk

thinks most of the work will fall into the following categories:

Structure (What kind of council life does the denomination need going forward and are changes needed to the Form of Government we recently adopted?) Unity (How are we to relate to one another as sisters and brothers in Christ?) Practical Theology (What is our understanding of marriage and our pas-toral role in it?) Peacemaking (How can Presbyterians contribute to peace in Israel-Palestine?) and Outreach (How do Presbyterians respond to immigration?)

You can follow Laura via Facebook (Wauwatosa Presbyterian Church) as she attends the General Assembly and monitor the work of the General Assembly at http://oga.pcusa.org. Please hold the commissioners in your prayers, ex-pecting them to come home eager to tell how they have seen God at work in the world today.

Session Meeting Notes - May 21, 2012 Submitted by Dottie Anderson, Clerk of Session

The Session of Wauwatosa Presbyterian Church met for its regular meeting on May 21, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. in the gathering space of the church. Pastor Laura Loving served as

Moderator because Pastor Jim Rand was on vacation. Most of the time was spent receiving reports from the various ministry committees, and I am including a summary of them in the Notes to keep you updated on im-provements and goals of the Session.

Adult Enrichment: The committee is exploring new ideas and opportunities for growing in faith: Advent Won-derful Wednesdays will continue a study on Justice vs. the Poor, and in January a discussion of Justice and the Desert People will be held. A new opportunity will be offered on Thursdays to study scripture as it pertains to the Sunday worship service. A microphone system is being used during the Sunday morning Adult Enrichment program, which has improved communication

Worship: A new Presbyterian hymnal is available after June 15th, 2013. The committee is considering the new hymnal and all options in enhancing the music experience in worship. The talented woman who painted the baptismal eggs is no longer available, and the committee is encouraging others to share their artistic gifts and ideas for improving worship.

Personnel: a) After the Session regrettably accepted Jody Jossie’s resignation as office manager, the committee set to

work on obtaining her replacement. Applications are being reviewed. b) In completing an evaluation of the church’s office management software and investigating more compre-

hensive alternatives, Jody prepared a very detailed report on Amp Fusion – Church Database, which pro-vides many features that would enhance communication in the church for PC and Mac users, as well as provide technical support. The cost is within the office budget. The Personnel Committee is grateful for office assistant Hillary Townsend’s computer expertise in helping to assist in this new transition and for Jody’s tireless work in finding and evaluating this new software.

c) The committee met with Pastor Laura Loving and the Presbytery Staff for a six month review. The com-mittee is pleased to report that the relationship between Pastor Laura and the WPC congregation is a happy one, and we expect our newest pastor will continue to challenge us with her creativity, new ideas and plans for spiritual formation.

Presbytery: Ruling Elder Bonnie Strigenz reported on the April 24th special meeting of Milwaukee Presbytery. Presbytery approved the report of the What Next Committee and adopted the committee’s recommendation of reorganizing the structure of Presbytery. There was a great deal of concern for the loyal staff members who will be without jobs, but they were told they would be welcome to apply for the new staffing positions. Mary Steege was elected to serve as Interim Executive Director of Milwaukee Presbytery beginning May 1, 2012.

Pastoral Report: Pastor Laura Loving reported she has concluded the Women’s Bible Studies, and she received positive feedback for continuing these studies. June will be a busy month with a quick trip to Indiana to cele-brate a friend’s birthday, a week in Portland to attend her daughter’s wedding, and in late June, using her con-tinuing education fund, she will be traveling with the Princeton Touring Choir and attending General Assembly. She plans to write a blog while she is at G.A.

Building and Grounds: Ruling Elder Jim Halverson reported the ground preparation for the bike rack is com-pleted and is pursuing ways to fund the project. A drainage pipe on the grounds of the church is leaking and is causing sink holes. It will have to be replaced to avoid leakage into the church building. Money for this project will come from the Contingency Fund.

It was m/s/p that Session approve the proposed design to put the name of the church on the front of the building in the thinner, more modern font. Previously, guests of the church have com-plained that the church was difficult to find because no name was visible on the church building. This attrac-tive lettering was chosen to solve the problem, and generous benefactors have volunteered to pay for the pro-ject.

PRESBYTERY OF MILWAUKEE STATEDE MEETING: KENOSHA FIRST TUESDAY, MAY 22ND, 2012

Submitted by Bonnie Strigenz, Community Life Elder

The Interim Executive Director, Mary Steege presented her report. She encouraged the Presbytery to maintain the core identity of being Christian as we move forward with changes and uncertainty. The Stated Clerk announced that all statistical reports were submitted to the General Assembly with a 100% con-gregational participation. The complete report can be viewed at www.pbymilwaukee.org go to the minutes of May 22nd. During the evening worship Elayne Stover welcomed Linda Loving as a new Teaching Elder to the Presbytery. Lin-da is the Chaplain at Avalon Square. Her welcome gift was accepted by her sister Laura Loving as Linda was working. The Council made a motion to form an Administrative Commission to ascertain the situation and to give direction to the Session of Crossroads Presbyterian Church. The Commission will report at each stated meeting of the Presbytery until its work is completed. This motion passed. A letter was received from the Session of the First Presbyterian Church of Oostburg, Wi, requesting to be dis-missed from the Presbyterian Church. The Council recommended that an Administrative Commission be formed to help with this dissolution. This motion passed. Session Partnerships and Mission Partnerships are working together on a project for 2012 around the theme of water conservation. More information will follow. Summer camp scholarships for 52 youth were granted. At this meeting 46 individuals from 9 congregations were commissioned for the Presbytery-wide mission trip to Harlan, Ky. The Ghana Partnership Team is looking for individuals and congregations to make both financial contributions and a commitment of time. Please contact Bill Dummer (1-414-475-0076). The next Stated Meeting of the Presbytery will be Tuesday, September, 25th at Wauwatosa Presbyterian Church. We look forward to seeing YOU there.

June 2012 CCNS Update Dana Biasi - Administrator

Well, another great year at Curiosity Corner Nursery School has wrapped up! We had an exciting month in May, learning all about the renewal of Spring and the life cycle of caterpillar to butterfly. Each classroom had their own set of caterpillars and the children witnessed all the stages of metamorphosis. It was really exciting to watch the butterflies emerge from their cocoons! We released the butterflies in the garden in front of the church. Finally, we concluded the month

with a wonderful family picnic at Cooper Park. We were sad to see the school year end but we look forward to getting to know a new group of children in the fall! If you missed my presentation for the Moment for Mission in April, please note CCNS’s new school logo! I was very excited to present this to the members of WPC and the community. Keep your eyes peeled, you may see our ad with the new logo in your neighborhood newsletter!

Spiritual Formation Corner: Kids and Prayer When a fire truck peels down your street, sirens blaring; when you find a dead robin under a tree; when your little one—neighbor, grandchild, son or daughter, nephew or niece—accomplishes an important developmental step; How about offering a quick pray-er? Modeling prayer with our kids is a way to keep the “Christian education” going over the summer months, and a way to keep our own spiritual lives in tune. Suggestions:

+Bedtime ritual (always a little different in the long, light hours of summer evenings) Child: Thank you, God, for this day. Adult: (Recall two or three things from the day for which you are grateful.) Child: (Name two or three people for whom you will pray; lift up joys, concerns, worries and thanks.) Parent: Bless us through the night, and help us wake ready and refreshed to serve you. Amen. +Sirens, accidents: Adult: O God, the eerie sound of the siren calls us to prayer. Give courage to those who are summoned to help. Be present with those in need. Comfort those who are frightened. Send your healing power and your compassionate care in this time of crisis. Amen. (any of these sentences alone would work with a small child.) +How about a summer quarrel, a sibling fight, a time of conflict?: Forgive us, God, for our fighting. You have created us to be instruments of your peace. Help us to stay in tune with your plan for us. Amen. from Celebrating at Home: Prayers and Liturgies for Families, L. Loving and D. Payden Hope these are helpful summer "spiritual soup starters”!---Laura Loving

SUMMER PLANS FIRST FRIDAYS for Prayer: Morning Prayer Opportunities with Reverend Laura Loving

Summer dates for a short service of Morning Prayer are June 1, July 6, August 3 @ 9 a.m.

We will meet in the chancel of the church sanctuary and enjoy conversation and refreshments following a 20 minute service. Wherever two or three are gathered, Christ is in our midst.

Music Notes

Summer Music Musicians who would like to share their talents with the con-gregation during summer worship services are encouraged to contact Martha Stoner ([email protected] or 414-873-0204) to arrange for a date.

Kick-Off Potluck The Chancel Choir will start the 2012-13 season with the annual Kick-Off Potluck at the Miller Estate,474 W. Wis-consin, on Lake Pewaukee on Thursday, August 30th, so we can see the water-skiing (assuming there will be some). Bring your own meat and a dish to pass. We will be starting at 6:00ish. Carpooling is encouraged.

Special Occasions We will have several exciting opportunities this year includ-ing the Presbytery meeting on Tuesday, September 25 and the Gamanfa Ganu on November 11. We’re always ready to welcome new singers to the choir. We will be rehearsing on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 9:00… maybe this is the year to make singing a healthy part of your life!

Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee has a gardening opportunity: help foster fam-ilies tend their gardens and teach some finer points of gardening. Alice's Garden is at 21st and Garfield on a two acre site that was once part of abolitionist Samuel Brown's farm. It has a meditative labyrinth and a patio with a roofed pavilion. Along with staff, volunteers can help foster families a few times a month sharing their gardening knowledge. Contact Nicole Carver, Interfaith Conference Program Director, at [email protected] for more information or indicate your interest to the WPC office at 774-5005 or to Mike Flanders at 414-708-3588.

We are happy to welcome one of the Ghana Delegation to preach on Sunday, September 2. After worship join him for a light lunch and participate in a lively round table discussion on the theme "Diversity in All Its Forms." The four members of the Delegation will be in the Milwaukee area the first week in September. Signup for the luncheon and the opportunity to learn more about the challenges of Presbyterians in Ghana. Forms will be in the Gathering Space in August.

It’s that time of year again. The grass is growing and your help is needed for mowing. A sign-up sheet is in the Gathering Space. Help on your own time. Thanks in advance for helping us out!

Come Cheer for WPC’s Team (& maybe even play!)

The WPC Co-ed Softball Team has re-

turned to the field for another season of hustle, fun and fellowship. Here’s your chance to play on a team that always

enjoys itself regardless of the outcome. There are no talent or experience crite-ria - the only requirements are to play

hard, do your best, be reliable, and have fun. See the Church Calendar for Monday night game times at Whitman

Middle School. Questions?: Please contact Rick Moon via email at

[email protected]

Do you want to keep your brain sharp and active like this beautiful lady? Marjorie Snapp, mother of Jean Miller, plays bridge 2 - 3 times a week at Kirkland Crossing and with the Wauwatosa Bridge Group. The players can expect a tough match when the Mil-ler/Snapp group comes to play! Playing bridge is a great way to sharpen your brain and have fun at the same time. The church bridge group is looking for pairs to join the group. (Any matching of pairs works - friends, husband/wife, mother/daughter, sisters...whatever. They don't have to be church members either.) We make our own arrangements to play a different couple each month for 6 months. If at all interested, contact any of these couples; the Stoners, the Palmers, the Co-lards, the Miller/Snapps, or Art Kronenberg. If you would like to brush up or learn how to play this fun game, we would be glad to get you started with some easy, relaxed lessons and a little cheat sheet.

Wed., July 18th

Lunch at Saz’s & Brewers vs. Cardinals Game Join us for a dutch-treat lunch at Saz’s at 11:30 a.m before

the game & then we’ll take the FREE shuttle bus to and

from the 1:15 game.

Thurs., Sept. 13th at 1:30pm

Dessert & Dolley Madison Program We are again fortunate to have Mrs. Jessica Michna as our

guest to present her riveting portrayal of Dolley Madison,

"the lady who saved Washington". You may recall some of

the other programs Mrs. Michna has done at WPC. We have

seen her portray Mary Todd Lincoln, Abigail Adams, and

Eleanor Roosevelt. Mrs. Michna will hold your attention

with her vivid characterization of one our nation's most

memorable founding ladies. Plan to join us for dessert at

1:30 p.m. and the program at 2:00 p.m. Friends are always

welcome. It's a great way to start off our 2012-2013 calen-

dar of Over 55 events. Watch for sign-up to begin in late

August.

Attention, All Snoops!

Have you ever wondered about the "stuff" we house in our church archives? Satisfy your curiosity about the church’s past while helping sort our records and memorabilia. The Archives Committee met three times in May and June and made considerable progress in bringing order from chaos.

We have four more meetings scheduled. Please join us (you need not attend all meetings). Saturday, July 7, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm Thursday, July 12, 6:30 – 8:00 pm Saturday, July 14, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm Saturday, August 11, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

All meetings are in the Flosse Wetzel Archives/Meeting Room. Any questions please contact our Church Ar-chivist, John Krugler (262) 790-9700 or email: [email protected]

Page 11 The Joyful Noise

The Trash Fence near the rear of our parking lot, built about 15 years ago, was showing its age. Two of our Gray Panthers, Don Gunderson and Dave Roberts volunteered to undertake the design and rebuilding of it. They really do Good Work. They have a few details to finish but this is a grand improvement reflecting the desire of our Church to be good neighbors.

Quilters’ Quest wishes to extend a great big “thank you” to all of those that participated and contributed so generously to our Silent Auction. We are pleased to have received $400 for the five lap quilts that were sold through the auction. The proceeds will be used for cleaning and servicing of our sewing machines. A special thanks to Sharon Polakowski, Sharon Ainsworth, Pat Roeper, Kathy Kern, and Don Gunderson who purchased the quilts. Our group will meet again starting in September of this year through May of 2013. Our doors are always open and we welcome all from beginners to advanced skills. If you would like to join us, just drop in

the meeting room and check us out. We’re very flexible with hours 10:00 a.m. to 2:00pm twice a month and you may join us as your schedule allows. Look for our fall schedule starting in September. For questions or more information call Ilene at 414-475-5211 or Dee at 262-790-9700.

Thanks to all of you for supporting our Noodles Fund Raising event on Thursday, June 14. Because of your help the Greater Tosa Interfaith made about $760 that day! We really appreciate all the help and hearty ap-petites. Thank you very much. - Diane Euting, Greater Tosa Interfaith The Wauwatosa School District greatly appreciates the support your church gives us in holding this fund-raiser for Amnesty International. Not only does it sup-port important causes, but it such a great way to bring together diverse groups of kids to celebrate each oth-er’s talents. - Susan Dederich, Amnesty Co-Advisor

FALL FLOWER SALE MUM'S THE WORD: Chrysanthemums, that is.

Yes, you can again purchase a lovely September mum again this year. Greater Tosa Inter-

faith is selling chrysanthemums in 8-inch pots. Proceeds support GTI's Neighborhood Out-

reach Program, a ministry connecting older neighbors with a caring community. We're hop-

ing to sell the 65 to 70 mums WPC typically purchases each September -- and maybe more.

You can help a worthy Wauwatosa charity and beautify your property at the same time.

Please place your orders by Aug. 26 by dropping this form in the collection plate or by con-

tacting the church office.

Cost: $6 for one mum or $11 for two

Pick-Up and Payment: Sunday morning, Sept. 16, at Wauwatosa Presbyterian Church

Please Note: Colors of the mums vary and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at the

church's front entrance. Representatives will be there beginning at 9 a.m. that Sunday.

RSVP by 8/26: Yes, I'd like to help Greater Tosa Interfaith!
