Levi Evans and How D Special Dudette (Howdy) Going to the Pinto World Show was a very fun and educational experience. I met many new and interesting people and got the chance to talk to many trainers. I started out just wanting to get the experience; it was a great surprise to be able to come home with a “Reserve Champion” buckle. Even though the heat was little more then expected, it was great to be able to have this experience with my wonderful parents and encouraging friends. I would like to thank everyone who supported and encouraged me from right here in Indiana.

Hi, I am Deb Hilbert, your Indiana Pinto Secretary and Editor of the banner.

I would like to say Congratulations to all the Indiana Pinto members who went to the world show.

I look forward seeing everyone at the Jubilee show in August. Deadline for the September/October banner is September 25th.

Here are my top 10 tips for being a great sportsperson this year: 1) Congratulate the people in your class. 2) Ask the person passing you in the aisle how their rid was. LISTEN. And respond. 3) Say hello and thank you to the volunteers. 4) Be patient in the show office 5) Say hello to the judges and officials. 6) Smile when you walk past people. 7) Tell someone to have a good ride. 8) While it is ok to have a bad ride, refrain from complaining about it within earshot

of others riders. 9) Watch without judgment. It’s not your job. And nobody else standing next to you

wants to hear it. 10) Thank your show team, for everything, all the time. Make them feel appreciated.

Judges Discuss Top Ten Fashion Mistakes with Stephanie Lynn Stephanie Lynn/GoHorseShow

The fashion faux pas that bothers judge Jill Newcomb the most is pants that are too short. Photo © GoHorseShow

Judges, by definition, are an opinionated group. Their job is to evaluate exhibitors, separate runs and place each class. And judges will use every bit of criteria available to determine the winners. While no judge evaluates an exhibitor solely on their outfit, there is no doubt that what an exhibitor wears makes a difference in judges’ minds as they assess contestants. But perhaps not for the reasons you think.

Each judge interviewed relayed a common theme – they are looking for a clean, polished look, one that looks professional and shows respect to the discipline, its heritage and traditions. Many of the judges interviewed repeated the points made by others. The mistakes they see most often are also some of the easiest to correct.

1) Short pants As one of our best dressed judges, Jill Newcomb has an affinity for all things with bling yet when asked, the fashion faux pas that bothers Jill the most is still pants that are too short. “Perhaps it is because I am tall and can sympathize, but one of my biggest pet peeves is short pants. I understand kids grow, I understand it can be difficult to find pants that are long enough. But when pants are too short, my eye is drawn to the exhibitor’s boots and all I see is feet. It simply does not look finished or polished.” Jill also dislikes it when exhibitors wear their numbers low on their backs just above their hips. “Numbers should be worn between your shoulder blades not at or below your waist.”

2) Mismatched boots

Page 39: July August Banner compressed - Indiana Pintoindianapinto.com/resources/July_August_Banner.pdf · INDIANA PINTO HORSE ASSOCIATION BANNER July/August 2016 LIL PAINTED PRINCESS aka

2/4

Sara Simons agrees with Jill. “If I can find pants that are long enough so can the exhibitor,” Sara exclaimed. She also finds it important for exhibitors to “match their boots to their pants, especially when the pants are light colored. It completes the look.” Sara tells students, “You have to commit. If you want to wear navy blue, then you commit to navy blue. If you want to wear tan, you commit to tan. I am not saying you have to buy an expensive pair of boots, but I tell my students they need to commit to a color, buy a pair of leather soled boots, take them to the cobbler and have them dyed.” In Sara’s opinion, that is one reason the color black is so popular, exhibitors can easily buy boots and pants that match. A streamlined look is always the best and for showmanship, Jill and Sara are looking for a clean polished look. Anything that distracts when the exhibitor is running, like pants that are too short and boots of a different color, detract from the overall performance.

3) Tight white pants

For Melissa Dukes, it is “tight white pants. White pants are a difficult look for anyone to pull off,” Melissa indicated. She suggests, “Exhibitors wearing light colored pants should make sure the pants fit properly are lined. A lined pair of pants will hang better especially when the fabric is a light color. It is simply a tough look to pull off and having the right fabrication and fit is imperative if you are to do it successfully.”

4) Messy hair

John Briggs finds messy hair to be telling of the efforts made in the presentation. It is a significant detail and John feels “as though exhibitors did not put forth their best effort” when hair is messy. A neat clean look tells John that the exhibitor not only cares but “paid attention to the details that go into a good presentation. I am looking for a neat, clean and finished look. Unkempt hair does not portray a well- prepared exhibitor. It is all about presentation and that includes neat hair.”

5) Excessive fringe on jackets

Clay MacLeod doesn’t like to see anything that takes away from the rider’s overall look like excessive fringe on jackets. “Besides looking rather silly, it makes for a lot of unnecessary movement. It is very distracting, especially in horsemanship and showmanship,” Clay said. “Also, excessive ornamentation on hats such as cowhide, exotic leathers and sequins.” Clay referred to himself as old-fashioned however he is not alone in his opinion.

6) Disregard for tradition

Many judges spoke up regarding an exhibitor’s respect to traditional values of the discipline in attire. Clay Farrell indicated he doesn’t like, “anything that takes my eye away from a beautiful rider on course. That could be a brightly colored shirt, boots that are too short or an oddly colored hunt coat – anything a traditionalist might find unacceptable.” Clay makes it clear that he would not hold it against an exhibitor, but may use it in a tiebreaker situation especially in an equitation class.

7) Poorly fitting chaps

Page 40: July August Banner compressed - Indiana Pintoindianapinto.com/resources/July_August_Banner.pdf · INDIANA PINTO HORSE ASSOCIATION BANNER July/August 2016 LIL PAINTED PRINCESS aka

3/4

Suzy Jeane maintains, “No matter how good your leg is, I cannot see it if your chaps are too big.” It is a problem all too common. “I see chaps that are too big on top, the thigh or hip as well as at the lower leg and ankle. Either way, if you want me to see how good your leg is, I have to be able to see your leg. If your chaps are too big, I simply cannot see your leg.” Suzy recommends, “Spending the money on custom chaps for the best fit and look. It is just about impossible to find a pair of chaps that fit correctly off the shelf.”

8) Appropriate attire for age and body

Gayle Lampinen helps fit clients in outfits that are appropriate for their age, their body type and their horse’s color. She finds certain colors seem to have an age limit and likes to see riders beyond 13 & under in darker hues when wearing colors. Gayle finds it offensive when she sees pants too tight or pants worn without appropriate undergarments. It plays to the same theme we have heard throughout – nothing that diverts the judge’s eye or devalues the overall performance.

9) Hair net bun covers

While still quite popular in some breeds, dark colored or crocheted hairnets are not used in most stock horse breed shows. Chris Thompson tells students to, “use natural colored, thinly woven hair nets to keep hair in place with lots of hair spray if necessary.” Like the other judges, Chris is looking for a streamlined look and finds the dark bun covers draw negative attention. “Anything that grabs my attention takes away from the overall look. If it disrupts the flow of the outfit, it is a negative for me. Heavy dark hairnets stand out and look out of place.” Chris agreed with John Briggs, “neat and tidy; clean and professional.”

10) Heavy soled boots

Rhonda Replogle makes sure all of her students wear a leather-soled boot. She especially does not want to see thick rubber soled boots in halter and horsemanship classes. “Thick rubber soled boots look like work boots and are not appropriate or dressy enough for the show ring, no matter the size of the show. A smooth leather-soled boot presents the most professional look in the show ring,” Rhonda indicated. “And in riding classes, leather soled boots allow your foot to hang in the stirrup properly. It is also a safety factor, thick soled, rubber bottomed boots do not slide in the stirrup as a boot is intended to do.” Rhonda suggests students look at ropers that are very economical and can be purchased in a variety of colors.

The overriding theme with the judges I spoke with was clean lines and nothing that disrupts the flow of the exhibitors’ performance by drawing the eye away from the overall look. While exhibitors are encouraged to express their individuality in the show ring with their outfit, it is important to heed the judges’ thoughts. Exhibitors are trying to build a positive impression with the judges and any distraction becomes neutral at best. Happy Shopping!

LAMINITIS (founder)

Fifteen percent of the horses in the United States suffer laminitis at sometime during their lifetime. This is more than 1 of every 7 horses. Most horses survive but many have lingering problems for years to come. While research continues on the mysteries of laminitis, a growing understanding has resulted in greater prevention and treatment options.

Laminitis is when the tissue that connects the hoof to the coffin bones becomes inflamed. This tissue, called laminae, supports the entire horse. Inflamed laminae may stretch, swell, and separate causing severe pain and lameness. Sixty percent of the horse's weight is carried on the front limbs and this is where the condition most often occurs, however all four or just one leg may be affected. Severity can range from very mild cases that may go unnoticed or misdiagnosed; to severe cases that require euthanasia due to the extent of suffering.

PRECIPITATING FACTORS

Laminitis has been associated with several other diseases and factors including:

1. Endocrine disease such as Cushings (PPID) or Equine Metabolic Syndrome 2. Excessive grain intake 3. Grazing on pastures of high sugar content such as spring/fall growth 4. Excessive or concussive exercise in adult horses 5. Obesity - risk increases greatly as body score increases 6. Stress from disease or trauma 7. Use of corticosteroid drugs 8. Poisons - as little as 1% walnut shavings in a load of bedding 9. Small hooves or poor hoof quality

The treatment for laminitis is more varied than for any other equine diseases. Laminitis is an emergency and should be treated as soon as possible, preferably before any symptoms appear. Laminitis can be categorized as acute or chronic.

ACUTE LAMINITIS is of sudden onset and may be divided into:

x Acute (severe form) usually involves more severe signs. The horse is more painful and does not respond rapidly to treatment. Coffin bone rotation is more likely to occur. Horses with both front feet involved often stand in a "saw horse" stance where they try to shift all their weight to the rear limbs by drawing the rear legs further beneath the body. If all four legs are involved the horse tends to lie down for extended periods of time. Anxiety, muscle trembling, reluctance to move to pick up a hoof, bounding digital pulses, and heat at the hoof or coronary band are often present. Horses may or may not show sensitivity to hoof testers.

x Refractory laminitis is an acute laminitis that does not respond or responds minimally to treatment during the first 10 days of treatment. The clinical course of the disease is related to the amount of lamellar damage that has occurred. Minimal damage to the laminae respond to treatment quicker and are less painful. Extensive damage to laminae respond slower or not at all and are much more painful during course of disease.

x Subacute laminitis is a milder form with less severe signs. Some of these are caused by trimming too short, walnut shavings toxicity, or road founder from a horse being worked on hard surfaces. These usually respond well to treatment without permanent damage or rotation of the coffin bone.

CHRONIC LAMINITIS is often called founder and is a continuation of acute laminitis which becomes chronic as soon as the coffin bone begins to move within the hoof capsule. Chronic laminitis is divided into:

x The Early Chronic stage begins at the first sign of any movement of P3 (coffin bone ). This may occur in days or may take months. Some of these cases resolve with minimal movement (rotation) while others are so severe that the hoof comes completely off.

Page 56: July August Banner compressed - Indiana Pintoindianapinto.com/resources/July_August_Banner.pdf · INDIANA PINTO HORSE ASSOCIATION BANNER July/August 2016 LIL PAINTED PRINCESS aka

x In the chronic active stage the coffin bone has rotated and continues to rotate until it possibly penetrates the sole. Foot abscesses are quite common. The coffin bone is unstable within the hoof capsule.

x In the chronic stable the coffin bone becomes stable and the hoof wall and sole begin to grow again. This is usually associated with slow clinical improvement. These hooves often have diverging hoof rings (fever rings), a dished hoof, and often the heels grow faster than the toes. Hoof tester response is often variable due to loss of hoof integrity, blood supply, and tissue death. Dropped or flat soles often accompany horses with laminitis.

DIAGNOSIS

The first step toward diagnosis is a veterinary exam. Abnormal stance, reluctance to walk, reluctance to have hoof lifted, increased pulse, heat, sensitivity to hoof testers over the sole area (not always), and pain if external hoof wall is tapped are all symptoms to be evaluated. An accurate and complete medical history is taken to try and determine a cause of the laminitis.

Radiographs should also be used to help diagnose and treat all cases of laminitis. Radiographs should be taken before and after shoeing to assess the amount of correction obtained. A thumb tack is often placed at the tip of frog to help determine the best point of breakover for that horse. A radiopaque material such as barium is placed on the distal hoof wall to insure accurate hoof wall measurements.

Radiograph of laminitic hoof Radiograph of normal hoof

Venogram is one of the most significant developments in the diagnosis and treatment of laminitis.. A radiopaque dye is injected into a vein near the hoof. A tourniquet keeps the dye in the area. Radiographs are quickly taken. This allows us to visualize the vasculature of the foot. We can then see which areas of the foot are getting blood to that area and then trim the hoof to maximize blood flow into that area. The venogram provides the first detectable evidence that confirms laminitis. Some practioners feel that doing venograms itself is therapeutic in helping restore blood flow to some areas. Time is of the essence, but ideal results are obtained by quickly re-establishing a healthy vascular supply.

Page 57: July August Banner compressed - Indiana Pintoindianapinto.com/resources/July_August_Banner.pdf · INDIANA PINTO HORSE ASSOCIATION BANNER July/August 2016 LIL PAINTED PRINCESS aka

Blood flow shown by Venogram

TREATMENT

Initial treatment involves proper diagnosis and assessment of severity of the disease. Then the disease is controlled on multiple fronts. The foot receives mechanical support, the diet is managed, the environment is managed, medical management is implemented and sometimes even surgical intervention is required.

Mechanical supports starts with radiographs (x-rays). Several exact measurements are calculated. A qualified farrier and the veterinarian form a team with the goal of balancing the hoof with respect to the coffin bone.

Effected horses are taken off all grain and food stuffs that contain sugar including apples, carrots, and other treats. Horses are removed from pastures or any source of grass. Inciting causes such as metabolic disease are identified and specific dietary recommendations are implemented to manage specific causes.

Horses are treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, analgesics, tranquilizers, and IV DMSO. Some horses receive autogenous stem cells. Stem cells are harvested from horse's fat and injected around the coronary band. In extreme cases the deep digital flexor tendon is surgically cut to decrease pull on the coffin bone and relieve stress on the lamina.

PREVENTION

By taking measures to avoid some of the precipitating factors, you can reduce the odds of your horse incurring laminitis.

x Horses over 15 years of age or presenting symptoms of endocrine disease should be tested and treated accordingly. This may require specific dietary restrictions.

x If your horse devours excessive amounts of grains or concentrates, call your veterinarian. Treatments are available to reduce the absorbtion of these feeds before laminitis symptoms appear.

x Limit grazing of lush spring grasses. x Use corticosteroid drugs only as directed by your veterinarian.

If you suspect that your horse has laminitis, contact your veterinarian for prompt diagnosis and treatment.
