JULY 28, 2019 SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
A VIEW FROM THE PEW
The Gospel is from St. Luke, 11:1-13 in which we hear Luke's rendition of the "Our Father" and Jesus' teaching on prayer.
The Our Father is certainly the most sublime formula possible and contains the whole essence of the most elevated mental prayer. But we must realize that vocal prayer does not consist only in the repetition of a certain formula. Therefore, in order that our vocal prayer be real prayer, we must first recollect ourselves in the presence of God, approach Him, and make contact with Him. Only when we have such dispositions will the words we pronounce with our lips express our interior devotion and be able to sustain and nourish it. Unfortunately, inclined as we are to grasp the material part of things instead of the spiritual, it is only too easy in our vocal prayer to content ourselves with a mechanical recitation, without taking care to direct our heart to God; hence we should always be vigilant and alert. Vocal prayer made only by the lips dissipates and wea-ries the soul instead of recollecting it in God; it cannot be said that this is a means of unit-
ing us more closely to Him.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
Generosity, redefined
Many are shocked at the idea of biblical tithing. Give 10 percent—10 percent!— of our resources to the Lord? Who would do this? Yet some Christians do it as a matter of course. No statistics indi-cate that anyone ever died of tithing or of generosity exercised on any scale. The gospel doesn’t follow the widow who put her whole livelihood into the temple treasury after her signature ges-ture of trust. Yet we’re led to believe God will care for her with the same ex-travagance that she showed.

Fresh Anointing at the
Charismatic Conference
So blessed to be part of the Hawaii Catholic Charismatic Renewal! The 41
st Conference held
recently at the Catholic Charities Center was Totally Awesome! We are thankful for Deacon Larry Oney and his wife Andi Oney from New Orleans, who travel the world sharing God’s Love through their ‘Hope and Purpose” Ministry. Together they delivered dynamic HOLY SPIRIT POWER PACKED messages that kept us glued to our Faith. As we called upon the Holy Spirit, we received a Fresh Anointing! PRAISING AND WORSHIPPING GOD is so impor-tant! As we praise Him more fully, He can work in our lives, transform hearts, heal us, heal families and bless us with His miracles! In fact we DID witness a miracle which occurred at the Conference before Adoration. While praising God through song, many of us were overwhelmed by a Sweet Miraculous Scent of Roses in the room. Many confirmed that YES INDEED our Blessed Mother and the Holy Spirit were present! The out-pouring of their Love was so great that many were brought to tears and fell to their knees in Praise! Mahalo to the HCCRS Team, Music Ministry, Dea-con Raffy Mendoza and ALL who shepherd others to know and Love God more fully. Come join us next time for upcoming Holy Spirit Filled Events. Expect to be filled with JOY of being a New Creation in Christ! God Bless!

SCHOOL NEWS
MARY, STAR OF THE SEA
EARLY LEARNING CENTER
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
Dear Parents, Parishioners and Friends, Mary, Star of the Sea Early Learning Center recently created its “Catechesis of the Good Shepherd” Atrium, as a place where young children can experience God’s love through scripture, reading, songs and hands-on learning based on the Montessori method. It is also dedicated to the presentation of lessons about our Catholic faith, the Mass, the Eucharist and Holy Scripture. We are currently seeking a life size statue of Jesus, as the Good Shepherd (approximately 5-6 feet in height), made of stone, fiber stone or “poly-resin.” The statue will be placed near the entry to the ELC’s large children’s play yard. We prefer a statue that is already painted or can be painted. If anyone has information or suggestions in regards to our request, please contact Director, Lisa Foster at 808-734-3840 or [email protected]. We are also planning to have the statue unveiled and blessed during our ELC 40
th anniversary
celebration in June 2020 (more information forthcoming). The theme of our 40th
anniversary is, “A World at Peace: Promoting Peace, Goodwill and Understanding One Child at a Time.” Donations of $250 and above toward the purchase of the statue are welcomed, appreciated and accepted! Donor names will be recognized and engraved on our Giving Tree located on our office wall by the ELC reception area. School tours of our Atrium and classrooms are available on Tuesdays and Thursday, from 9:00-9:30 AM. Please call our office at 734-3840 if you would like to schedule a tour. Below are several examples of the life-size statues of “The Good Shepherd.” We welcome your suggestions and ideas! Aloha, Lisa Foster
