Age: 1 year. Breed: Pitbull/American Bulldog mix -White. How I Arrived At NHS: I was found as a strayand my finders brought me to Northwoods to find aforever home.Note From An NHS Volunteer: Macklemore is
believed to be deaf. Although it was once believedthat deaf dogs could not be trained, many people thatlove and care for them say deaf dog training isn't dif-ficult. Dick Russell, a dog trainer near Baton Rouge,La., has worked with more than 100 deaf dogs in thepast 20 years. "It's as easy to train a deaf dog as ahearing dog," the only difference is you use hand sig-nals instead of verbal commands." The secret, hesays, is having a clear hand signal for each actionyou want the dog to learn. It doesn't matter what theyare, he says, as long as you're consistent.

by DENISE MARTINA long standing, unresolved com-
plaint between property owners and
the Chisago Lakes Lake Improve-
ment District-- an issue that’s been
ongoing since the lake level control
system was constructed decades ago
may finally be getting dealt with.
Ironically, in a period of time when
lake water levels are extremely low
and the lake overflow weirs sit idle
the issue being addressed has to do
with flooding. The Chisago Lakes Lake Improve-
ment District Board Monday night
acted unanimously (with two mem-
bers absent), to offer approximately
$80,000 to landowners whose parcels
can be directly impacted when water
is drained from the Chisago Chain of
Lakes. The parcels are in an area
south of County Road 19, and north
of a network of outlets built in the
1970s for releasing “excess” water
from the bottom of the Chisago
Chain. The parcels that qualify were iden-
tified through a time-consuming
analysis of the land mass, and the
Lake Improvement District Board
hired McKinzie Metro Appraisal to
do valuation calculations on how
much each parcel’s value is impacted. The goal has been to figure out a
method to compensate landowners
for loss of land values due to artificial
water travel and/or retention, from the
LID system. The LID used a two foot
freeboard formula (water depth flow-
ing) and the appraisals to generate
what each landowner should be paid
in return for the LID using their land.
Kristine Nelson-Fuge, Asst. Chis-
ago County Attorney, told the LID
members this week this “just com-
pensation” package the LID Board
agreed to fund will now be presented
to the property owners. See LID UPDATE/4.

Center and Fairview Lakes Medical Center. Sponsors include the County Press, Central Bank and Security State
Bank. The fee for a full day of fun and learning is only $10! Checks made payable to Lakes Region EMS.
Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of serious injury and/or death in children.
This camp, taught by those who respond to injury related incidents, is designed to teach
children how to stay safe in a variety of situations with the goal of reducing the number
of injuries that occur each year. The camp includes sessions on bike safety, fire safety,
911 procedure, water safety, personal safety, electrical safety, seatbelt safety, and
first-aid - all in an informative and fun atmosphere. The knowledge and skills campers
learn will allow them to make the right decisions when faced with unsafe conditions now and in the future.
Children who have completed 3rd
, 4th
or 5th
grade can attend Safety Camp.
Pre-registration is required and limited to the first 100 participants. Priority will be
given to Chisago Lakes and North Branch school district families until June 20. After
this date, any person who wishes to register may do so. Registrations will be accepted
by mail, fax, email, or in person. An informational packet will be sent to all registered
participants approximately one week prior to camp with check-in information and a list
of things to bring to camp. Camp includes a t-shirt, bike helmet, snacks, crafts, games,
giveaways and a special awards ceremony at the end of the day F bring the family!
Campers will need to bring a bag lunch.

More than any other medium, voters count on newspapers to find out what’s going on in their communities. They know that unlike television or radio news programs, newspapers cover local issues every day of the week.
And they know with a newspaper, they won’t just get a 30-second sound bite, either. They’ll get real, in-depth coverage of the local issues most important to them.
The same issues that usually determine how they’ll vote on Election Day.
That’s why more and more winning candidates are making newspapers a part of their campaign team.
All politics is local. And nobody covers local politics like newspapers.
