It is our position that effective teachers should be rewarded for improving student scores and performing at extraordinary measures. The Indiana Department of Educa-tion and the Indiana State Teachers Association have filed for a grant that will place a teacher incentive program into interested school systems. The bonus system will be based on supervisor evaluation, student improve-ment in the classroom and overall school improvement.

Teachers are an important factor in the success of a student, but they are by no means the only factor. Parents must take an active role in their child’s education as well. And where parents are not ensuring attendance and appropriate care for their youngsters, parental accountability must be fully enforced. The balance between a teacher teaching and a parent parenting is not a clear-cut as one might hope.

Teachers who excel in their field or who are going above and beyond should be rewarded with financial incentives to assist in fueling their drive for excellence. The Indiana Department of Education and the Indiana State Teachers Association have the right idea, but need to put some more thought into this issue.

ers are overstepping their boundaries in banning all sweetened drinks from vending machines on city property in order to help fight obesity. We believe government cannot and should not act as behavioral police at the expense of depriving citizens of their rights, and that includes the right to make less-than-optimum decisions.

We favor providing incentives to encourage better decisions. In the case of obesity, it could be appropriate to provide a discount on the cost of health insurance for individuals who make the decisions necessary to avoid obesity and its accompanying higher health-care costs.

The track record indicates that when a government bans a substance, it creates more demand. After more than a trillion dollars and countless lives lost, the war on drugs continues, with few if any users deprived of easy access to their drug of choice. The prohibition of alcohol was quickly followed by a “U” turn. Gambling is now state sponsored.

Government should take a page from the good parenting handbook and reward good behavior and NOT reward bad behavior. The results will be bet-ter, and this nation, founded on personal freedoms, will be preserved.

“The welfare safety net has been around so long, it has become a hammock.”

At least that is the opinion of some. I first encountered the point of- view while talking to an acquaintance in the newspaper business in Vancouver. He was commenting on the current state of affairs in the U.S. entitlement business and how it compares to his view of the present reality in his home nation.

The direct (and somewhat intentionally offen-sive) remark returned to my thinking recently as our country continues to extend unemployment benefits to millions of Americans. Does unem-ployment support become welfare after a year or more? Does it matter?

Not a week passes that I don’t spend time talking to someone seeking jobs or work with one already in my employ looking to increase their earnings. Folks have always sought to im-prove their status, but recent economic events seem to have brought a different crop of seek-ers – they are older, more experienced and eager to support their families. Yet as employment is

offered, it is routinely rejected, because it cannot sustain the existing lifestyle of the potential em-ployee. “I cannot and will not work for that.” Respectable decision. But certain skills earn only certain reward. If only we were all gifted actors or ball-players.

But can we ever hope to ameliorate the rage of a middle-aged man who has worked his en-tire life to build a family, only to have it swept away by the inevitable shifts in human com-merce? Will a lesser job suffice? Will five years of “unemployment” lead to reintegration? Will five months? The safety net is essential. We can afford it as a nation. But can we afford to shield those caught in it from reality? More than a hammock, I’m concerned that the net could become a spider web – and catch many good people in it.

Have you given much thought to your funeral? I know that sounds morbid, but I had a fascinating discussion about my own potential “arrangements” this past weekend with my husband and mom. My uncle’s best friend had passed away a few days earlier after suffering a heart attack during a gallbladder surgery. He was only 68, and he had been expected to handle the operation with-out complications. Needless to say, the sudden news of his death was devastating for my aunt and uncle, not to mention this man’s family.

My parents attended both the visitation and the funeral itself while we were in town, which is how we ended up talking eulo-gies and memorial services and burials versus cremations. I found it interesting that we each had our own idea of the perfect way to “go out.” For example, my mom is adamant about not having an open coffin, because she finds it too depressing for loved ones.

In fact, she wants to donate her body to the University of Lou-isville medical school (she recently retired after 30 years of high school teaching, but apparently even death won’t be stopping her from doing what she does best) and after a small service at her church, insists that my sisters and I throw the mother of all par-ties, complete with food, booze and a D.J. “I don’t want people crying over my body; I want them celebrating my life!” I can’t argue with that, especially when said celebration includes Tina Turner and Makers Mark.

Doo? My husband? He’d like to be cremated and then have me and the kids sprinkle his ashes over his favorite place on earth, Treasure Cay Beach in the northern Bahamas. I’m totally on board with that too. I won’t have to bother with a coffin or rent-ing a venue, just five plane tickets to the Caribbean and perhaps a new sundress. My dad’s wishes are along the same lines, only he’d

prefer Pebble Beach Golf Course in California and a vodka toast. Cheers!

As for me, I’m not really sure. Before we left town, we swung by Cavalry Cemetery to see my grandparents’ graves. For some reason, my 6 year old has been obsessed with death lately and has been dying to visit Mamaw Johmann (pun intended). I don’t know why, but something about being outside in the fresh air, surrounded by all the other headstones and grave markers, was extraordinarily peaceful.

I liked having something I could talk to, a physical representa-tion of my grandmother upon which my daughters could lay picked clover. I liked that she is buried with Papaw and right next to her twin sister and her husband. And if I’m being totally hon-est with myself, I find it awfully comforting to know that when I’m gone, and my children’s children are gone, people will still have something to remember me by besides my column on home-schooling. (I’m never going to live that one down!)

I suppose in the long run it doesn’t really matter. I mean it’s not like I’m going to care whether someone offers turkey or ham at my wake (Ham, please, country style!) or that I was laid out in some God-awful red pantsuit for everyone to mourn over (Aqua-marine is so much better for my ghostly pallor). But I still think it’s a good idea to give some thought to how you want to go out, and then let your people know. Those left behind can find com-fort in knowing their efforts are what you would have wanted. Peace out.

Ten new pizzas will be making their debut at Jan’s Village pizza on August 2, but only one will reign supreme.

The 11th Annual Employee Bake-off at Jan’s will be from 6 to 9 p.m. August 2 at the restaurant’s Westfield location. The public is invited to come to Jan’s for a buffet where they can try all the employee-created pizzas, sam-pling them as much as they like, and to cast a vote for their favorite. Whoever wins will get their creation added to Jan’s menu, a $100 prize and a trophy for the accomplishment.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Jan Miller, owner of Jan’s Village Pizza, said. “It’s neat to watch people try the new pizzas.”

The bake-off started the first full year Jan’s was in business.

“It was just something we came up with on our own,” Miller said.

Since then, a number of new pizzas have been created, voted on and added to the menu. The first two pizzas from the first bake-off are still on the menu today – the Mexican Meltdown and Chicken Alfredo pizzas – along with other winners.

Miller wants to keep the pizzas a surprise, but did say that a wide variety of pizzas will be

revealed at the event. She also added that the bake-off is important for her business. She said that employees look forward to the competi-tion every year, trying out each other’s pizzas and critiquing them for one another.

“They work together to make the pizzas the best,” Miller said. “We just encourage every-one to participate.”

The bake-off buffet is open to the public. Adults can eat for $9, and that includes pizza, a drink and tax. Children up to age 10 can get that same combo for $5. No other pizzas will be placed on the buffet that night, and the restaurant will not be open for delivery or pick-up. Also, Jan’s Sheridan location will be closed that evening.

It’s not yet known which artists will be per-forming at the under-construction Center for the Performing Arts, but a recent announce-ment shed some light on where these performers might be staying.

The center has reached an agreement with the Renaissance Indianapolis North Hotel, making Renaissance the preferred hotel for the arts cen-ter’s guest artists and performers. The agreement also will include cross-promotions between the hotel and the Center, including special concert and accommodation packages for guests staying at the hotel.

“The Renaissance is a dedicated partner in promoting the arts,” the center’s Executive Di-rector Steven Libman said in a statement. “The partnership allows the center’s guests and patrons to enjoy the hotel’s hospitality. I look forward to working with the hotel during the center’s rapid growth period and in the years to come.”

The Center for the Performing Arts is cur-rently under construction at the corner of 3rd Avenue SW and City Center Drive in Carmel. The center will include three state-of-the-art performance venues, including a 1,600-seat concert hall, the Palladium, which is scheduled to open January 2011.

The other day, I received a rather official-looking letter in the mail. Curious, I opened it.

The pink background of the single-page docu-ment looked like a check or pay voucher. If you looked carefully, you could see the Statue of Liberty standing in front of a waving American Flag.

My eye was naturally attracted first to bold red letters on the middle third of the page declaring, “NOTICE REGARDING PREDA-TORY LENDING YOUR IMMEDIATE PAR-TICIPATION IS REQUIRED.”

Just above this statement in black bold all caps was printed, “RE: PREDATORY LEND-ING INVESTIGATION.” Above that, in a box titled “Subject,” again in red lettering, was the words “Audit Notice.”

The bottom third of the page blared, “FAIL-URE TO RESPOND TO THIS NOTICE MAY AFFECT YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS.” And below that, “WE CAN HELP SAVE YOUR HOME.”

Sitting down, I read on …PLEASE READ ENTIRE DOCUMENT

Twin brothers Adam and Andrew Riddle say they’re living testaments to the positive impact of the Westfield Youth Assistance Program.

A little more than a year in existence, the YAP is going strong, with over 150 referrals, 34 families who have completed the program, and another 57 families currently enrolled. The pro-gram intervenes in the lives of youths heading down the wrong path and works to steer them away from the juvenile system. Only a few other preventative programs like this exist in the na-tion. The YAP got involved in the Riddles’ lives, and the brothers say they’re better off because of it.

Andrew and Adam enrolled in the program while they lived with their mother for a short time during an absence that made their father, Scott, unavailable to them. In his absence, their grades slipped, and they were attending school very sporadically.

“We were missing too much school,” Adam said. “Some days, we would go [to school] around fifth period. Some days, we just wouldn’t go. It actually got to the point where we either had to withdraw from school or be expelled.”

The truancy officer had seen the boys at their father’s residence, trying to clean up and care for the house in his absence, but their at-tendance was so poor that they were referred to the program and accepted the assistance. Scott returned shortly after the boys enrolled in the program, and all three began attending meetings regularly with Tricia Akers, the pro-gram director, and Mayor Andy Cook, their unofficial mentor. Today, Cook and Akers are still informed when the boys are tardy or miss assignments.

Both Andrew and Adam passed their third trimester classes and have plans for continuing their educations after high school.

“We definitely would not be where we are if it weren’t for the Youth Assistance Program,” An-drew said. “We really knew what we were doing [wrong], but we didn’t care at that point. But when you have the mayor and Trish both riding you the whole time, you can’t really say no.”

That inability for the boys to say ‘no’ – an increased accountability system – was really the intention of the specific program developed for the Riddle family.

“One of the first things we did was talk to them about the importance of finishing high school, and they both promised me that they would work toward graduation,” Cook said. “They reiterated that vow [at the Mayor’s Yellow Tie Ball on July 9] before about 200 people, so that will put a little pressure on them. That was kind of the goal.”

Cook meets with the Riddles monthly and checks in on them even more frequently. Akers has helped them in various other ways, from assisting them with the reenrollment process at the school to helping the family find financial assistance while Scott seeks work, and the fam-ily really only receives a fraction of the services offered through the program. The Westfield Youth Assistance Program was started in 2009 and it is intended to keep troubled youth (ages 3 to 17) out of the juvenile system. At-risk children can be referred by parents, teachers, school counselors or even police officers. If child and his or her family voluntarily elect to anonymously participate in the program, a number of services will be provided to them free of charge.

tailoring a plan that is specific to whatever is happening within the family unit,” Akers said. “I kind of think of myself as a broker; [families] come in, and I plug them into whatever services they need.”

As for the Riddles, they are thrilled with the program and have nothing but praise for the effect the YAP has had on their family.

“If you’re asked to be part of the program, you need to embrace it because it really helps,” Scott said. “There’s nothing negative about be-ing in the program … It’s just amazing what they can do.”

This week will feature a concert at one of Westfield’s newest places of relaxation.

Janet Tarr has started the Labyrinth in her six-acre backyard in Westfield less than a year ago. The location started out as a track to run 4-wheelers on 11 to 12 years ago. Then, like in the movie “Field of Dreams,” Janet had an intu-ition, and it originated with her job.

“The work I do with my clients is helping them relax,” Tarr said. “It (the Labyrinth) was created to provide a place for people to find peace and balance. And it’s in conjunction with the work that I do.”

Tarr said that the Labyrinth was created for the whole community. Although it was created out of the work she does with clients, she said that it has become a place much bigger than that now.

“It’s expanded into a place community can come and relax,” Tarr said. “It brings you to this space of wonder. It changes your focus from moving fast to slowing down.”

This year, Tarr has added something new to her space – musical events, which are important to her because she feels people need to listen to musical artists who are independent. They need to see something different than what they’re used to, she said. Therefore, Tarr is bringing in independent artists for concerts for the purpose of relaxation and meditation.

One such event, Starry Night Concert, will taking place at 8:30 p.m. this Saturday at the Labyrinth, 2809 State Road 38 E. This event will feature a concert with Richard Shulman, a keyboardist and composer who has created 23 of his own albums. He is trained in classical and jazz music and has performed throughout North American and parts of Europe. His specialty is

creating music for meditation. Admission to the concert is $15 per person,

but children age 14 and under are free. RSVP by calling 440-1732. But this event isn’t the only time available to check out the Labyrinth. Anyone can call Tarr to make a free appoint-ment and walk around the grounds for free.

The perception often associated with my top-ic this week is one of “Old World” flair – and one that many may turn their noses up at.

This is unfortunate, as it has many celebrated attributes, both edible and otherwise.

This food is cultivated for consumption of the stem and root. It is originally from West-ern China and Tibet. It is a relative of the buckwheat family, thriving in colder climates, traditionally raised for medicinal purposes. Bo-tanically speaking, it is considered a vegetable; however, it is most often treated like a fruit, though rarely eaten raw.

Enough foreplay. I am speaking of rhubarb, first introduced in the United States in the late 1700s and coming into favor from the early 1800s thru the mid 1900s.

The word “rhubarb” comes from the Latin word “rhababarum,” which means “root of the barbarians.” It has been cultivated and consumed since 2700 BC in Chinese and Ti-betan tribes and mongrel clans. Used for blood purifying, acid reflux and protection against gum disease, constipation and heat flashes from menopause, throughout history, rhubarb has had many unsubstantiated medical uses.

Originally used in the making of teas and tonics, it often is paired to consume with fruits and sweet ingredients, as it is slightly tart and acidic. There are many recipes combining it with berries, apples, pears and other fruits for desserts, chutneys, fruit compotes and sauces to accompany pork and chicken.

The red variety is mostly preferred, but, truth be told, the green and speckled have all the same qualities. The red variety also has been used to make a potent dye for coloring eggs, hair and clothing.

Rhubarb began its height of popularity in the mid 1500s, when it was in such demand that it sold for 10 times the price of cinnamon in France. And in the mid 1600s, it was valued at twice the price of opium in England

For us mere peasants, a recipe to benefit from its many attributes is included.

‘Rhu’ the vegetable or celebrate the fruit?

Ingredients:• 1 Ea 1 1/3 # pork tenderloin rubbed

with olive oil, ground coriander, salt and pepper

• 3 tbsp. olive oil• 1 medium sweet onion small diced• 1 2/3 cups small diced rhubarb• 1 cup fresh raspberries• 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar• 1/3 cup white wine• 1/2 cup brown sugar• 1 tbsp. honey• 1/4 tsp. chicken base• Fresh ground pepper• 1 heaping tbsp. fresh minced chives

Directions:In a hot sauté pan, sear the pork loin in half the olive oil, turn constantly or finish in the oven until 140 degrees internally. Pull meat from the pan and let rest. In the same sauté pan, add the remaining oil and onions and sauté un-til lightly browned. Add the remaining ingredients except the chives; cook on medium low heat, stirring to prevent burning, until the rhubarb is broken down. Slice the pork, spoon the sauce over the pork, and sprinkle the chives on top. Enjoy.

Under normal conditions, we lose as much as 2-3 liters of water per day through our breath, sweat and urine and up to 2 liters per hour with heavy exercise. Though feeling thirsty is a sign that we need more water, our thirst mechanism decreases as we age and is less reliable than you might think. Distracted by their work day and on the go, many Americans do not get in the recommend amount of water.

Though dehydration results in feeling thirsty, concentrated urine, fatigue, muscle cramps, increased heart rate, headache, flushing, parched mouth, skin changes and chronic mild dehydra-tion can stress the body’s detoxification systems and contribute to aging and many diseases. A few of the chronic medical conditions that worsen with dehydration are …• Obesity• Headaches• Fatigue• Fibromyalgia• Kidney problems• Diabetes• Heartburn or gastric refluxThe use of sodas, juices, coffee, teas and other

caffeinated beverages, sports drinks and flavored waters containing sugars may actually add to our water losses. A good rule of thumb is to add two glasses of water for each caffeinated bever-age consumed to counter the dehydrating effects and to shoot for drinking half of your body’s weight in ounces per day.

For example, someone weighing 180 lbs should drink about 90 oz. of water. Under ideal conditions, our urine should be clear to a very light yellow. If your urine looks concentrated, increase your water intake and check with your doctor if it doesn’t improve or if you have heart disease, diabetes or renal disease to discuss the appropriate amount of fluid intake.

Drinking an extra glass of water 30 minutes before meals may help with decreasing calorie intake. Being mindful of our fluid intake is im-portant, as we may already be deficient in water before we notice our thirst.

Like almost everything else in our bodies, our veins are susceptible to deterioration with age, especially if we have a poor diet or inadequate ex-ercise. This is particularly true of the veins in our legs, which have the difficult job of conducting blood upward against gravity’s relentless pull.

The movements of the legs act as a pump to push the blood upward, while flimsy valves stop gravity from pulling it back down. However, over time, these valves can begin to fail, and the blood then begins to pool in the deep veins of the leg, stretching the vein wall and injur-ing its lining. This situation is called venous insufficiency.

Varicose veins, a condition closely related to venous insufficiency, occur when veins near the surface of the skin are damaged. They vis-ibly dilate and become distorted, resulting in a cosmetically unpleasant appearance resulting in varicose veins, which afflict countless millions of people, where the incidence is believed to be 50 percent of people over 50.

The house was filled with the sounds of screaming kids and bare feet running back and forth on the hardwood floors. In this small area of the house, the sounds echoed, creating a level of noise that eventually leads to insanity.

Add the television, which had been turned up to infinite levels in a futile attempt to drown out the yelling. Blood pressures were soaring, and tempers were sitting patiently on the sidelines waiting their turn to add to the chaos. Seeing we were moments away from a parental scream being added to the mix, I jumped to action and turned off the television. Things seemed to settle a bit – less noise, less clutter in the air. Before you could count to 20, there was a dead silence in the house. Not a sound.

It takes a bit of time before you realize quiet is not good – quiet could only mean trouble. It hits you like an unexpected solicitation, “What are those kids up to?” “Why is it so quiet in here?” Back to action, I start by yelling their names in a way that lets them know, “You can’t fool me,” while simultaneously beginning my search for their mischief.

If you have kids, this story is familiar. While quiet can be relaxing, it’s can also be a sign of trouble; it can be a red flag. Think of a business

meeting. The quiet ones often are the ones who disagree. Five people in a room, and three of them are doing all the talking. What about the fourth and fifth? What are they thinking? Often overlooked, their restful voice could be a sign of discontent. And, most of the time, their disagree-ment or discontent is voiced after the meeting. By the water cooler, at lunch, over drinks, in the halls, or at a later meeting, these quiet ones ex-press themselves in more private, smaller settings.

As much as silence makes things go faster and seem better, you’ve got to get everyone talking. You’ve got to ask people what they think. Get them to make commitments in front of others. As people make small commitments of “I like it” or “this makes sense” in a group meeting, they are less likely to voice disagree-ment afterwards. It would be inconsistent.

While often peaceful and preferred, the sounds of silence can often be the calm before a storm. Get people talking, get them yelling, get them as excited as a five-year-old with minds racing, and you’ll likely see the rewards.

The ‘90s and ‘00s will be decades to remember. Cars with 300 Horsepower are everywhere currently, but this won’t last.

So let’s talk about a truly great pony car, one that has always been a great deal compared with its peers, and alas, is no more – the Pontiac Firebird and Trans Am.

Produced from 1967 to 2002, the Firebird shared its platform with the Camaro. There were four generations of the Firebird. The first two generations are already considered collector cars, and I believe the last two will soon join them. The third Generation (‘82 to ’92) has few desir-able models but the GTA which started in ’87 utilizing a ‘vette motor, and the 20th Anniversa-ry Turbo Trans Am (TTA-Indy Pace Car-1,555 made) are standouts.

The fourth generation introduced in ‘93 marked a return to a real muscle car in every sense of the word, but with great handling to boot. Firehawk special editions topped 330 HP. Most desirable are the ’98 bright purple metal-

lic WS6 Ram Airs (with just 12 made), the ’94 25th Anniversary, ’99 30th Anniversary, and of course, the Firehawks.

These great cars are now trading in the $2,000-5,000 range, with exceptional examples maybe bringing $10,000-12,000. Look for these prices to double in the next five to 10 years. Pontiac is History. Non-abused Trans Ams will have lasting value.

Of the many definitions of loyalty, my favor-ite is “allegiance,” as in, “I pledge allegiance to my family.”

What exactly does that mean – and how can I teach it to my children? For starters, it means loyalty to or support for a person, cause or group. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, if we want to teach our children to be loyal, we must be loyal.

Loyalty means not talking behind people’s backs, especially not in front of our children; loyalty is trust; loyalty doesn’t play favorites based on skin color, gender, wealth or physical features.

In excerpts from “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens” … • Loyal people do not break confidences.

When people share something with you and ask you to keep it “just between you and me,” keep it “just between you and them.”

• Loyal people avoid gossip. Avoid gossip like rabies. Think well of others and give them the benefit of the doubt. This doesn’t mean you can’t talk about other people; just do it in a constructive way. Strong minds talk about ideas; weak minds talk about people.

• Loyal people stick up for others. The next time a group starts gossiping about another person, refuse to participate in the gossip or stick up for that person. Either walk away saying, “I don’t like the way this con-versation is going” or, “I know that person and I don’t believe she/he is like that.” You may be unjustly thought of as righteous, but you will definitely establish yourself as a loyal person.

Loyalty is a principle that stands for respect, fairness, gratitude, acceptance and responsibility. When bad behavior, gossip, or breaking confi-dences is exhibited, it is our loyal responsibility to expose these poor choices as non-principled behaviors and report them to the appropriate authorities.

As for my pledge of allegiance to my family, I pledge to not break confidences, not gossip, not spread rumors and not talk about people behind their backs. That leaves a lot more room for me to show my allegiance to being a loyal parent. Hugs!

I recently spent some time back in my home county for the 4-H fair. I was a very active 4-Her back in the day; I showed horses and rabbits and did some other odds-and-ends proj-ects. Horses were really my big deal, though, and my parents live across the street from the horse arena at the county fairgrounds now, so I got to enjoy a lot of the events I used to partici-pate in.

I also learned a few things: 1. I have no idea how I survived the heat in black chaps, long sleeves, and a big black hat when I showed hors-es, 2. Pork tenderloin sandwiches at the fair are still the best things ever, and 3. A rural county fair is not the place to be if you’re a grammar snob.

Case in point: the truck pull. Now, I enjoy a good truck pull as much as the next gal (and I’m being honest here; I’m a country girl at heart, and I really like truck and tractor pulls), but the announcing has to be one of the best displays of poor-yet-widely-accepted I’ve ever heard.

You’ve never heard so much you-done-good and we-got-us-a-real-good-class-here in one place. At one point, the announcer said, “He’s got some b’donk-a-donk in that truck!” And the conversations going on around us were no more grammatically correct than those coming from the booth.

I did quite a bit of thinking about this subject since I’ve returned from the fair, and it brings me back to something important about gram-

mar: context. I used to tell my students all the time that we speak differently to different types of people and in different social circles. It’s true. And it’s important to know your audi-ence and speak in a way that makes sense to them. Generally speaking, the broader the audi-ence, the more correctly you want to speak be-cause the more likely you’ll be to draw criticism for speaking poorly.

But certain circumstances require consider-ably less formality. A truck pull isn’t the same as a political speech or a lecture on global warming. The audience at the truck pull doesn’t expect – and probably isn’t even interested in – well-planned, politically correct, grammati-cally flawless announcing. What they do want is someone who speaks their language, with all its flaws and idiosyncrasies.

Now, I’m not saying that I condone large-group-endorsed poor grammar. I’m just saying that certain ways of speaking appeal more to certain groups, and sometimes those speech attributes aren’t exactly correct in terms of gram-mar, structure, or style. But everyone should have a place or event where he or she can go to cut loose and not worry too much about what they say or how they say it.

And a truck pull is one such event. Hoo-dog!

Dave is a 1-year-old male black lab mix. Dave is a happy-go-lucky kind of guy who is outgoing and loves pretty much everyone he meets, including other dogs. He can be a bit protective of his food, and this is a cor-rectable behavior, but until he overcomes it, he should be in a home with teenage children. Dave knows the command “sit” and is food motivated, so he would easily lean more commands. He loves long walks, yummy doggie biscuits and play dates at the bark park.

Acappella is a 10-month-old female black and white DSH. Acappella arrived in mid-December when her owner no longer wanted her. She is a very sweet girl but, she is a bit shy with new people, but once she feels com-fortable she will seek out attention. Acappella would prefer a home without other cats, but she is willing to tolerate them if it means she can finally have a loving home. She is a playful girl, but the longer she waits for a home, the more depressed she becomes and less likely to feel like playing.

Well, summer is definitely upon us. A few things to remember about our pets: They need plenty of water, too. Dogs, like people, have become accustomed to air conditioning, so be careful when out for walks or a run that they don’t overdo it. They would be just as happy to stay inside as you.

Don’t leave your dog in the car! I can’t stress this enough. It only takes a short time for your pet to become overheated. Windows open a crack don’t help at all. Be sure to have plenty of water available at all times during these hot summer months.

A friend sent me this the other day, and I think it is something all of us pet lovers should read.

Your pet’s 10 commandments1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any

separation from you is likely to be painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial to my well being.

4. Don’t be angry with me for long and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your enter-tainment, but I have only you.

5. Talk to me even if I don’t understand

your words; I do understand your voice when speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember I could hurt you, and yet I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I’m not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be get-ting old or weak.

9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too will grow old.

10. On the ultimate difficult journey ,go with me please. Never say you can’t bear to watch. Don’t make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

A signal that the “all-you-can-eat” data plans from cellular providers may be coming to an end began with AT&T announc-ing it would no longer offer unlimited data plans for its cellular customers.

The popularity of the iPhone can be blamed for the overtaxed AT&T network and a key driver in the company’s decision to be the first to limit data plans.

Most industry insiders feel the other networks will likely follow suit at some point, as the number of mobile Internet devices con-tinues to grow on their networks.

The thought process is that if users have to think about their Internet usage, they won’t be so quick to use bandwidth-hogging Web sites such as Pandora or YouTube. It is very likely that the 80/20 rule is in play. (Eighty percent of the bandwidth is used by 20 percent of the users.)

With all this in mind, your first step to understanding how much bandwidth you might need is to understand which activi-ties use the most bandwidth.

Things like sending a simple text message or viewing basic Web sites use very little bandwidth, while streaming audio and video can eat up big chunks of bandwidth.

The 2 GB limit is AT&T’s largest data package for smart-phones, so here are some scenarios that might help you under-stand how much you can do with that amount of data.

Even if you added an attachment of around 300k to each e-mail you sent out, you would still need to send 235 messages per day, every day of the month, to max the plan. If you only surfed the Web, you would have to go to 380 pages per day, every day of

the month, to max out 2 GB.If you love posting pictures via Facebook or Twitter, you could

post 140 times per day with photos before you hit the 2 GB limit.

If you are obsessed with downloading apps or songs from iTunes, you would want to keep it to fewer than 20 downloads per day or pay the premium.

But here is where you can get into trouble: streaming media.Pandora.com is an amazing free music service that allows any-

one to create custom radio stations based on their specific tastes in individual songs and is very addictive, but spend two hours a day streaming music and you will nearly max out the 2 GB plan.

In standard definition, if you watched 35 minutes of video on YouTube per day, you would max out the 2 GB plan, but if you watch a lot of HD video, you really need to be careful.

YouTube limits HD video to 1 GB or roughly 10 minutes (whichever is less), so it is conceivable that if you watched the wrong two videos in one month, you could max out your data plan!

The reality is that you will use some combination of these tasks under normal circumstances. Unless you’re a teenager obsessed with streaming content, you will likely be just fine; if you are a parent of one of those teens, you may want to keep your iPhone away from them!

INITIAL SITUATION: This home in Zionsville included the builder’s original master bathroom with a small shower and basic tub deck, along with a carpeted floor. The homeowner wanted to improve the bath/shower experience by de-signing a way to increase the size of the shower footprint and create enough space for a new free-standing tub.

DESIGN PHASE: The design phase focused on the layout of the bathroom, but assumed the existing vanity cabinetry would remain as is. Different tub and shower locations were considered, keeping in mind the location of the existing window. The overall design goal was to enlarge the shower and also find the space for a free-standing tub. The project designer spent time helping the homeowner select the new mate-rials, including new tile for the floor and shower surround area. Wainscot height tile was designed to wrap around the perimeter of the room behind the tub to add continuity.

PROJECT SCHEDULE: The design phase for the master bath remodel included the creation of several new floor plans. These were presented to the client in 3D views on to a large 65” moni-tor to help the homeowner visualize the new design schemes. The design phase lasted two weeks, while the construction phase spread out over approximately three weeks.

FINAL PRODUCT: The new enlarged neo-angled shower pan

was expanded in size and covered with new 2”x2” mosaic tile sloping to a re-located drain in the center of the new shower. The shower walls included new porcelain tile with two cul-tured marble corner shelves, bench seat and new semi-frameless shower door and glass surround walls. The tub area includes new matching porce-lain tile installed to a wainscoting height. A new cast-iron tub with satin nickel claw feet was installed at an angle to maximize the existing space. Finally, new porcelain tile was installed on the floor, including a low-voltage heating system with a digital thermostat.

If you missed my last column, I re-counted the first days of my Middle East misadventures.

It left off at the arrival at the bus station in Abu Dhabi, home to the Grand Mosque.

I had hoped to share a firsthand account of the world’s largest chandelier from Ger-many made from 1 million Swarovski crys-tals and the 28 types of marble and 24-carat gold. I had hope to see the 82 domes all of traditional Moroccan design – all decorated with white marble and walk on the world’s largest carpet.

I had been forewarned that women must wear a scarf over the hair to enter but no, it was not required. A full blown abaya and veil, the black head-to-toe garment that al-lows only the eyes of a woman to show, was mandatory!

Today, the strictest interpretations of Islamic Shari’a law dictate that Muslim women should wear full body coverings in front of any man they could theoretically marry. While I understand that the Middle Eastern woman might embrace the abaya on their religious and cultural grounds, to me, it represented a symbol of submission and repression.

As much as I would like to have been able to share the aesthet-ic beauty of the mosque, the idea of the abaya for even an hour ran foul with every fiber of my being. I sent Mike and Evan on for the tour and waited.

I had learned that I could create my own little desert oasis by flagging down a taxi ... they were always air-conditioned to the

max! The ride around Abu Dhabi was as in-

teresting as the tour would have been. My driver spoke decent English, so this was a great opportunity to get to know how a taxi driver in UAE lived.

When I was kid, there were a lot of rules in our house. My father had a workshop in the basement, so his list of no nos was a great deal longer than Mom’s: paint thinner is not a bever-age; a band saw is not a musical instrument; a blow torch is not a hair dryer.

Mom did have one rule she was adamant about. You were never to slice a Thomas’ Eng-lish Muffin with a knife. Instead, the product was to be carefully pried apart with a fork, so that both halves revealed their celebrated nooks and crannies. Then a careful toasting produced the legendary ideal crunch.

As any muffin maven knows, the jagged ter-rain provides a nesting place for butter, cream cheese or jam. My father did not share the view that a sliced muffin is a muffin maligned. He routinely hacked away at Thomas with a kitchen knife, and when Joan found the half-eaten evi-dence on Dad’s plate, she’d scold him in front of the entire family. In retaliation, Arnie would then use the same knife to split an Oreo cookie into two cream-covered halves, a clear viola-tion of the twist and detach rule, still operative today.

I still don’t know the difference between a nook and a cranny. However, I always figured that the 75-year-old recipe for this highly touted topography was a carefully guarded corporate secret, not unlike the undisclosed ingredients of Coca Cola. Or what part of the chicken a Mc-Nugget really is.

And now it has been revealed that only seven people in the world know the formula for the nooks and crannies, and one of them is leaving the company, headed for Thomas’ fierce com-petitor Hostess, maker of Wonder Bread and Twinkies. Now the plot thickens, or rises – pick your bakery metaphor. Turns out Thomas’ Eng-lish Muffins is currently owned by a Mexican food company, Bimbo Bakeries, which sounds

like a south-of-the-border Hooters. In reality, Bimbo is one of the largest food conglomerates in the world. I think they make almost every-thing except frozen tacos and burritos, which they farm out to the Chinese.

Bimbo and Hostess are now in a legal battle over Thomas’ recipe for nooks and crannies.

Make no mistake: This has shmear campaign written all over it. In the true spirit of English muffins, both sides will be equally represented. The jury may have a tough time. Expect a split decision.

It’s bad enough the Limeys are being blamed for the Gulf oil spill, but now the public will incorrectly assume this English muffin scandal is also about the Brits. If the judge lays down a nook and cranny cease and desist order, we’ll have both a petroleum spill and a potential jelly leak. Petroleum and Jelly. This is a headline writer’s dream.

The history of the craggy surface was any-thing but smooth scaling. Several notable bumps along the way perplexed the inventor, Samuel Bath Thomas, who in 1874 made the discovery after a failed attempt to find a cure for acne. Some of his early versions were disas-ters including the Moon Muffin, which was all nooks and no crannies. Another early snafu was calling it Tom’s English Muffins, because no one knew where to put the apostrophe. Thomas’? Thomases’? Thomas’s?

The Bimbo people are always searching for ways to increase visibility. I hope they don’t try to sell their products to fairgoers this summer. I love Indiana State Fair food as much as the next guy, but a deep-fried English muffin doesn’t sound quite Hoosier enough for me.

My sister Amy, normally the type of woman for whom the phrase “no-nonsense” was coined, recently called with a proposal that was … well, nonsense.

“Want to go halves on a horse?” she asked. Talk about a surprise. For starters, I live in the

center of a big city, and Amy lives in one of its suburbs. Neither is the sort of place you’d call “horse country.” True, I’ve had some neighbors over the years I referred to as a certain part of a horse’s anatomy, but you rarely see the entire animal around here.

Add to that the fact that we’ve never been what you might call horsey people, although there are lots of horsey people where we come from, up in LaGrange County. They’re known as the Amish.

And factor in a lesson taught by my beloved Uncle John, who asked, “Why would you feed something you’re not going to eat, sell or breed?”

(I am in agreement with Uncle John for the most part, although I do make exceptions for dogs, cats and family members.)

So you can see it was with some shock that I heard my sister, my sensible sister, suggest we go 50-50 on an underfed Appaloosa gelding named Merlin. It was, however, no shock when I said “OK.” Nobody ever accused ME of being sensible.

Merlin came to our attention through one of my sister’s dog-rescue connections, who also happens to be a horse rescuer. The friend had saved Merlin from a slaughter pen. A couple more hours and he would have been off to some part of the world where horse is one of the four food groups. Illinois, I think.

(Naturally, my sister made sure to lay it on thick during this part of the sale pitch. Which, I noticed, went on for a good three minutes after I agreed to her proposal. I guess she was so ready to hear “No” that even after a “Yes,” she still couldn’t hit the brakes.)

To find my sister turned into a horse nut is actually kind of funny. As a kid, she had a pony, a nasty-tempered beast named “Peaches.” When Peaches wasn’t biting Amy, or kicking Amy, she was running like a bat out of you-know-where with Amy clinging to her back, screaming for one of us boys to come out and shoot her.

About the only person who ever got Peaches to behave was my brother. She bit him, so he pasted her in the mouth with a left that just about knocked her cross-eyed. After that, Peaches was gentle as a kitten for an entire, oh, 10 minutes.

But that was then. Today I am half-owner of Merlin, who has just been ensconced in a stable outside of town where he is eating – you should pardon the expression, like a horse, while I pick up half the tab. Meanwhile, I am in Indianapo-lis not eating because of the enormous headache caused by Merlin head-butting me while trying to get to his feed pail.

Oh well. I’m in this thing up to the withers now. Might as well ride it out. Next time Amy comes up with one of these ideas, though, I’m going to put a hoof down and follow some very good, Uncle John style advice:

Just say whoa.
