It is hard to believe that I am writing this column for the September 2021 Bell...and yet here we are! I first want to begin by saying thank you. The transition for my family to Newtonville has been seamless and positive. This has only been possible because of each of you, and the many ways you have connected with us, and reached out to help us during the move, and during these first few months together. We have been blessed by this Newtonville UMC family over and over again. Thank you. Joy and I tell everyone we meet just how amazing this congregation is, and we are so excited to come alongside of you all in ministry. God has big plans for this very church, and I can’t wait to see what comes next! I have been meeting with both church members and staff members this summer, mostly in an informal fashion, with the purpose of getting to know people, and getting to know routines and processes that already exist here at Newtonville. I am learning a lot about the place called Newtonville UMC, but what I value most is learning about the people. I have had the opportunity to share some about myself during these meetings as well. This month, the SPRC will be helping me to identify both individuals and groups who I should have conversations in a more official way. Look out for opportunities to meet with men in groups, and also as individuals, and please, take advantage of one of those meeting times in the coming weeks. In case you’re wondering... I will mostly be asking a few guiding questions and then listening to your stories and answers to those questions. I will definitely ask the following questions: When you talk to your friends and family, and, more importantly, the stranger at Starbuck’s... how do you describe your church? Why would someone want to come here for worship on Sunday? What do you think are the major challenges we face as a congregation? What does our community need from us as we move into the “new” (almost) post-pandemic future? So... be thinking about those questions, and come meet with me willing to share your answers! I am excited to begin this “listening” phase of our time together in September! Just a reminder that I am keeping the same office hours as Karin. MWTh from 12-3pm... just stop by if you’d like to chat during those times. If you need to contact me, please use my cell phone 443-813-7584, or send me an email at [email protected] See you in church! The summer is going by so very quickly! MESSAGE FROM THE LAY LEADER I would like to thank all those who came together in so many ways to prepare for Pastor Nick and his family’s arrival. It was wonderful to spend a day with so many of you whom I had not seen for so long due to COVID restrictions and to witness all the hard work done both inside and outside the parsonage. It was a several day process that required many hands and many hours. THANK YOU ALL!!!!!! If you have not gotten a chance to meet Pastor Nick I encourage you to drop by and visit during his office hours, give him a call, email him or, chat briefly after service on Sunday. It is a new beginning for all of us with much to celebrate and look forward to. As fall approaches I think we had all hoped that COVID would be much more in the past than in the present. It continues to present uncertainties and the need for precautions to keep not only ourselves, but everyone around us, safe. My prayer is that we will be able to have the children back in Sunday school, gather for Bible study and continue to worship together. It has certainly been heartwarming to see some familiar faces as people begin to return to church on Sunday mornings. Be well and keep safe. In Peace, Pam

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY Needle workers are finishing up sets of hats, mittens and scarves for Red Bird Mission delivery in time for Christmas. We also make shawls and blankets for church baptisms and for those locally who are ill, grieving or otherwise in need of some comfort. We meet twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month in Room 4 where there is lots of space to spread out, masked unless otherwise agreed to by all present, socially distancing, signing in and sanitizing before and after we gather to work and pray. Some of us sort the work that was done between gatherings while others knit or crochet and catch up on news about our church family; the bins of new handmade clothing are filling up. Some folks just pop in just to join the group for an hour or two of conversation. All donations will find a home. Please note for those attending in person that wearing a mask that covers the mouth and nose is required to enter the building; mask wearing as we work will be decided by those participating.
