Prayer and Action

O God, who gave one origin to all peoples and willed to gather from them one family for yourself,

fill all hearts, we pray, with the fire of your love and kindle in them a desire

for the just advancement of their neighbor, that, through the good things which you richly bestow upon all,

each human person may be brought to perfection, every division may be removed,

and equity and justice may be established in human society. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Earlier this week, I ran across the following on a web page promoting Ignatian spirituality: “There’s something about the experience of receiving Holy Communion that enthralls me. I love walking up

to the altar slowly, with the community, each person holding on to his or her own struggles and then at the final mo-ment opening our hands. I find it to be so childlike and vulnerable. Opening my hands can actually be somewhat scary. I’m leaving it all out there, surrendering all of my control. I get nervous when I’m in line, but I find myself expe-riencing God’s healing touch in my own two hands when I receive the host. After this, the only prayer that’s left for me to utter is, “Thank you.”

“It’s with these open hands—through my sense of touch—that I am able to encounter God’s unmerited love in a very real and tangible way. It has always been a space for God to touch not only my hands but more importantly my heart. The sacrament challenges me to let go of my unrealistic expectations, to break out of the shell of my own selfishness, and most of all, to be patient with myself. Although I can sometimes trick myself into working all day, when I go to Mass with my hands open, I receive a tangible reminder that God has much bigger and better plans for me.” (Jurell Sison)

I mention the spirituality of St. Ignatius Loyola (as we approach his feast on July 31) because this reflec-tion is so in keeping with his admonition to “find God in all things”, including human touch. That very possibility is heightened by the fact of the Incarnation, as the only begotten Son of God was made Flesh, and God became in time one who could touch and be touched. Time and again, Jesus used touch as part of his healing ministry, lay-ing hands upon those who were ill and blind and lame and troubled. Yet at the same time we must recognize that not all human touch is healing. The open hand can so quickly become the closed fist, and the gentle caress can be transformed into a slap across the face.

Perhaps precisely because not all touch is of God does the image of “open hands” offer to us a special mo-ment of grace. When coming up for Communion, as the writer above points out, the hands that are open are poised to receive. These same open hands are also empty, symbolizing the heart’s craving and hunger for the God of life and love. There is also a certain vulnerability in these open hands — with hands open and extended before us, it is impossible to grab and hold, but only to accept and receive.

Let our open hands be a sign of our open hearts, especially as we receive the Lord.
