Welcome to the July edition of our magazine.
Hopefully, by the time we deliver the next issue
(September) through your doors, we will have a
few more activities up and running on which to report.
Looking at the material we were sent, it seems that there is a theme for this
month - caring for our own environment and dealing with things that mar it!
There have been many complaints about litter, fly tipping, dog mess on
pavements and more… I, for one, have noticed cleaner and clearer air
recently with less muck to clean off the windows or outdoor furniture. We
have had plenty of good weather for sitting in the garden and the birds are
very much more audible than usual due to the lack of aeroplane noise.
To make up for less to report, we have another monthly Quiz for you to test
your knowledge, thanks to Julie Taylor! I have added to this with a short
photographic quiz—can you guess what the mystery items are?
We have an item about Gareth Malone and his lockdown choir. It looks as if
Sue Briggs has enjoyed singing as part of this large group. There are several
similar ideas around. I have been involved in a smaller version, recording a
part in order to create a short video for Cantata Ladies Choir, who also
rehearse each week on Zoom.
I enjoy music and theatre and I wonder how long it will be before orchestras,
choirs and theatres will be able to get up and running again in some way,
especially since I have family working in that business who are greatly
missing performing and working behind the scenes.
Editors’ Notes
Remember there is no Parish News in August!
Parish News Online
We know that some residents prefer a real copy of the magazine as they like to browse. However some people like to read magazines and books on their tablets or phone. Parish News can be found online at:-
www.slipendparishcouncil.co.uk and www.slipend.co.uk where historical copies can also be found.

As I write, shops are opening up again. Shopping will not be the same
relaxed activity for a while I fear. Maybe “retail therapy” will not be quite so
popular. On the plus side some of our other businesses are also up and
running.
In our Parish we have been lucky. Paul Cooper and his team of volunteers
at the Frog & Rhubarb have been supplying our Fresh food needs as well as
running a takeaway service. The Village Store has been open throughout.
The Farm shop at Woodside has been open for fresh veg.
At Harpers, the food hall is still open for business with takeaway
refreshments to enjoy in the outside seating area. Home food deliveries are
also available to order via phone (01582 872001) Or email
[email protected] Unfortunately, they have had to cancel the
September Craft Fayre.
You may have seen on the TV news that pubs and restaurants are busy
trying to work out what they need to do to re-open safely. Our local pubs and
club will be looking forward to welcoming us back through their doors. I
asked for updates but, as yet, they cannot tell us about arrangements until
the Government has confirmed opening dates and rules and the restrictions
they may need to put in place. Hopefully this information will be available
soon. Watch out on social media and the websites for information from
them.
While we wait for things to change slowly to a new normal, we can still enjoy
the fresh air and get out onto our local footpaths and now even venture a
little further afield.
Some of the local attractions and beauty spots are opening up. You just
need to pick and choose the time to go and avoid the crowds. We have
walked on Dunstable Downs and Ashridge and managed to book a slot at
Wrest Park north of Luton. I have considered visiting nearby National Trust
properties and other places as well as Whipsnade Zoo now they have
reopened. So far, we have not been tempted to join the crowds on a trip to
the seaside but I am sure time, and space, to visit different places will
become easier over the next few months.
Keep yourselves safe!

Caring for our Environment
Litter Sadly, our streets and verges are often strewn with rubbish that
people have thrown from cars or dropped without care. The Council
workers were spotted on the main road one day, collecting some of the
mess. I belong to a Facebook group for NT volunteers and they are
reporting rubbish in beauty spots and lovely beaches so it is clearly a
countrywide problem.
We need to educate people to look after the environment and take their
litter home. It is not enough to bag it (or bag the dog mess) and then leave it
at the side of a path or even hanging in a tree! If we start with our own
children and help them to care for the world, maybe the next generation will
have a better world.
In the meantime, we do what we can to tidy up other
people’s mess. One resident, Gemma Day was spotted,
out with her children, litter picking around the village.
Hannah and Emmy help. They wear gardening gloves
and take bags for what they collect. Well Done!
There are others on the local Facebook group who have
set out with litter pickers. Another resident kindly bought
several litter pickers and offered to lend them to people to
join in with the efforts. Thank you to all!
Fly Tipping This seems to have increased while people have been at
home over the past few months. We have found bags of garden and
household rubbish everywhere down the back lanes and on corners. For
your safety, you can’t stop them but you CAN report them. The Parish
Council is addressing the issue as best it can. (see page 11)
Airport Expansion Plans The community will probably welcome the news
this week that Luton Airport is stepping back from its expansion plans for at
least a year, and they will be heavily modified thereafter. These plans affect
our community. We will all have noticed clearer air since the planes stopped
flying during the lockdown.
The statement can be accessed on:

Parish Council Update
The latest Parish Council Meeting was held on Monday 8th June as a virtual
Zoom Meeting.
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak this was the first Parish Council Meeting
since March. It is hoped that normal Parish Council Meetings can resume in
the Village Hall as soon as possible. However while Parish Council Meetings
are held virtually, Residents are still welcome to also attend virtually. Please
e-mail the Parish Clerk at [email protected] prior to the
meeting and a Zoom access code will be e-mailed just before the meeting
commences. Dates of the upcoming Parish Council meetings can be found
on the Parish Council website www.slipendparishcouncil.co.uk
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak the number of new Planning Applications has
reduced and no new applications were received by the Parish Council prior
to the meeting.
Following a request by a resident regarding the trees on Parish Council
property in Claydown Way, it was agreed that two trees will be removed. for
safety reasons. The removal of these trees will also save the Parish Council
the on-going regular cost of having them cut back.
Crawley Playground and Youth Shelter have been shut since the end of
March due to the COVID-19 outbreak. When it is safe to re-open, the
equipment will be thoroughly cleaned beforehand. Following clarification of
certain points that were raised, the Playground passed its RoSPA safety
inspection.
The new Rossway planters are now in and planted. The village hanging
baskets are also in place.
The Peter Edwards Hall has received various grants so work on replacing
the showers will now proceed.
Fly tipping incidents have increased since lock-down and it was agreed to e
-mail CBC regarding particular hotspots in Pepperstock
and Woodside Road.
There has been an increase in Dog Fouling within the
Parish. Reminders will be put on the Parish Facebook
page and in Parish News.

Scoop the Poop! Dog Poo – we’ve all stepped in it at some time in our lives. Some of us are unfortunate enough to then walk it through our houses, leaving a trail of devastation in our wake. It is estimated that the UK dog population (between 6.5 and 7.4 million) produce 1,000 tonnes of excrement per day. Now for the technical bit: A Parish Council has the authority to make a Dog Control Order to provide controls on the handling and behaviour of dogs on areas of land within their authority. There are five different types of dog control offences for which an order can be made. One of these is the ‘fouling of Land by Dogs Order – Offence of failing to remove dog faeces’. The MAXIMUM fine in a Magistrates Court is £1,000. According to research by ENCAM, those members of the public that let their dog foul the pavement:
• don’t believe they’ll ever be caught
• didn’t think the fine could be enforced
• only admit that their dog has fouled the pavement when pressed to admit it Ever heard of Toxocariasis? It is the infection of humans with the larvae of a genus of roundworms, Toxocara, of dogs and cats. It can cause swelling of the liver and sometimes damage to the eyes and no, there isn’t a useful treatment OR cure for it. Toxocara eggs are not infectious until they embryonate. This is usually at least 2 – 3 weeks after they have been deposited by a dog. Therefore, freshly deposited faeces are not infectious, and you can safely clear up after your dog.
Please do so – the Parish is suffering from some recent deposits which have been invisible to the untrained eye and poor unsuspecting parishioners who have walked in it, taking it with them on their shoes to their home or car. We all have to live in and walk around the Parish, let’s make it more pleasurable to do without having to dodge the poo. If your dog poos, clear it up. Enviro Crime (http://www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/waste/litter/dog-fouling.aspx) has been advised of the areas currently suffering from poo build up in the Parish and patrols will be established. If you come across dog poo within the Parish you can report it to Enviro Crime by phone on 0300 300 8302 or by email [email protected] Slip End Parish Council

CADDINGTON SURGERY URGENT INFORMATION
A note from the surgery:
We want to hear from you, we are open, and we need everyone who can to contact us online (rather than telephone) via our new service 'ONLINE CONSULTATIONS'. All you need is an email address.
This is a secure online service provided by Caddington Surgery and funded in part by NHS England. It gives patients the opportunity to request help for a non-emergency medical problem or other practice matter at any time, even when the Surgery is closed. You will receive a response, generally by telephone, within normal working hours after the surgery receives your request. If necessary, a doctor’s telephone consultation will be booked for you. It could also be an Admin query or a request for help where you might be asked for more information. The Doctors and staff would like Online Consultations to be the main method of contacting the Surgery in the future in order to free up the telephone for people who do not have online access. It is proving very successful for those who have used it, so please check out the Website for more details and register for this new service at: www.caddingtonsurgery.co.uk
Please note: This system is DIFFERENT to the online system which continues for repeat prescriptions. If you cannot use email why not ask a family member to help you use this service? You can help us to help you by giving more information, and even send photos if necessary, with your request for online consultations.
Personal recommendation – I have now used this service five times since Lockdown as I have had some fairly major health problems and can honestly say it has been really helpful for me in contacting the surgery online and explaining my symptoms, and even sending a photo on one occasion. Every time, I either received a telephone call from the surgery or a message on my registered account to inform me that the doctor would be ringing me that day, which they always did. You can even send your message the day before, so now no more waiting for ages on a busy phone line which must be a bonus. Sue Briggs.

Fly Tipping Issues
I’m sure most residents are aware of the numerous fly tipping
incidents our Parish has suffered recently, both before and since
lockdown, and that unfortunately it continues.
The Parish Council had signs printed and installed at various
locations around the Parish to try and deter fly tipping, and I
have been in contact with the Safer Neighbourhood Team at
Central Bedfordshire Council to work with them to see if any
further actions can be taken.
Central Beds has the powers to use covert cameras and the
Safer Neighbourhood Team is currently preparing the necessary
legal paperwork required to use the cameras BUT the locations
the cameras are set at is very much data dependant, so I urge all
residents to report any fly tipping incidents to Central
Bedfordshire Council. The more reports they receive the better
our chances of having the cameras deployed in the Parish.
You can report tipping incidents by e-mail:
or by phone 0300 300 8302.
If you do report an incident please copy me in on the e-mail -

Great British Home Chorus
with Gareth Malone
On the first day of Lockdown Gareth
decided he would like to do something for
all those people who enjoyed singing but
could not go along to their groups or choirs.
He formed the Great British Home Chorus
and set out in a Cabin in his garden to join
with people of all ages who wanted to share
their voices together. That first day at
5.30pm 15,000 people joined and his
enthusiasm was brilliant. His idea was to practise every weekday, even
teaching different parts; soprano, alto, tenor and bass and eventually for
everyone to send their audio clips and videos to Decca to all be put together
using modern technology to make us sound amazing. A very adventurous
plan. Music and words would be put online and a video of how to record your
voice and where to send it, along with a photograph. The first song chosen
was You are my Sunshine, but there were others to follow, also for recording
and some to just sing along to including We’ll Meet Again by Vera Lynn.
There were online videos, tutorials and he invited many friends along to
some of the sessions. It was a very rewarding experience and last Friday on
June 12th it was Gareth’s 50th session! We were even asked to record a new
song written by a 16-year-old called Ray, for a television series that Gareth
has been involved with, called This is just another Storm which was duly sent
last weekend. Now these challenges have all finished Gareth is deciding
what to do next, and insistent that there will be a follow-up which is great
news. Well done Gareth Malone, you have certainly done your part to help
the Great British Choirs during this difficult Lockdown. Sue Briggs
Culture in Lockdown
If you look on You Tube or Facebook, there are many videos made by
professional and amateur musicians and choirs. It is good that people are
continuing to entertain others in this way. You can also watch various plays,
operas and musicals by searching for venues like the National Theatre or
Shakespeare Theatre and many others. Whatever your taste, there is
something available out there! Failing that, how about a good book!

Gardening Notes by Russell Sprout
After a prolonged cold and very wet spring we have at last had some warm sunny weather,
let’s hope by the time you are reading this it will have settled into a lovely summer.
Deadhead roses on a regular basis to encourage a second flush in the autumn and keep an
eye out for greenfly, black spot, mildew and rust. Tie young stems of dahlias to their
supports with soft string or raffia and if large blooms are required then dis-bud the lower
buds to get long stems for cutting and arranging in a vase. Chrysanthemums can be treated
the same way, but spray varieties should be left, although stake and tie-in shoots to avoid
wind damage. Gladioli will not need staking for normal garden use but keep well watered
and weed free.
Prune deciduous shrubs such as Jasmine and Philadelphus after flowering by removing spent
flowers and weak shoots. Irises can be divided and replanted this month and cut the top half
of the leaves off to avoid wind damage. July is the month when lilies are at their best and
unless you want to save the seed they should be deadheaded as the flowers fade, water
carnations and pinks if the weather is dry. Early this month sow Sweet Williams and Wall
Flowers for colour in the spring. Rock gardens will look somewhat drab from now until the
autumn but best to keep the weeds down to prevent the alpines from being overwhelmed, so
keep weeding and trimming alpines and water if necessary. Mounded or carpeting plants not
showing new growth should have soil mixture and fertiliser worked into them. Patio
containers and hanging baskets will require watering at least once a day and deadhead to
keep them looking their best.
Summer fruiting raspberries can be cut down as the fruiting canes are finished, but leave the
new shoots because they will bear next year’s crop. Tidy up the strawberry bed when the
fruits are finished. Blackcurrants can be pruned after fruiting, cutting out the old wood, tie
in new shoots of blackberries and loganberries but keep them separate from the fruiting
shoots. In the greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbers should be bearing fruit; a liquid
fertiliser should be applied every 7-10 days to encourage the fruits to ripen. Keep pinching
out the side shoots of tomato plants (except bush varieties) to get decent size fruits.
Complete planting of leeks this month as well as late Brussels sprouts, winter cabbage and
spring broccoli, also plant swedes by the middle of the month. In the herb garden make
further sowings of Chervil, Dill and Parsley and remember to harvest just before they come
into full bloom if you are going to dry them for future use.
If the weather is hot and dry and there isn't a hosepipe ban, then water the lawn regularly,
aerate by spiking with a fork as this will help the water penetrate well below the surface
where it's needed to keep it looking green.

A Message from St Andrew’s
A New Normal
At the time of writing the Church is still closed. The church is the people not
the building, but we are missing coming together to worship. We do continue
to meet via Zoom at 10.30 am and 4.00 pm on Sundays with Morning Prayer
on Thursdays at 9.30 am. Contact Cathy if you would like to join in.
As the lockdown eases, there is much talk about what sort of world we are
emerging into, which commentators have dubbed “the new normal.”
I don’t know about you but I have mixed feelings as I watch the news about
what a new normal will be like. Will issues of racism and oppression be
addressed or will we descend into violence on the streets? Will we remember
the fantastic work of the NHS or will it be sold off? Will we value our green
spaces or will we ruin them either by jumping back into our cars to pollute
them, or dumping our litter all over them?
During the lockdown there have been many signs of hope – the clapping for
the NHS, rainbows in windows, impromptu music, street art, donations of
unwanted household items, food donations to Azalea, NOAH and the Food
Bank. My prayer is that this will be the new normal.
As a Christian, I have already signed up to a new normal, and that is Jesus’
vision of the Kingdom of God. It isn’t fully realised yet – there is plenty of
evidence in the news and our daily lives of that. BUT neither is it just life after
death. The Kingdom breaks into our life before death if we live under God’s
rule instead of our own selfish rules.
Normal used to mean that brokenness stayed broken, injustice stayed unjust,
the resentful continued in bitterness, and the bereaved remained desolate.
Jesus changed all that. God’s transformation of broken human lives and pain
-filled human institutions has started now.
In Jesus, broken human beings can start flourishing in a transformed
relationship with God. That is the new normal I want to be part of.
Julie Taylor,
Reader at St Andrew’s

Prayer for a “new normal”
May these extraordinary times
lead to deep and necessary changes in how our world works,
resulting in a genuine effort to address the profound injustice
of life expectancy being determined by geography, class or race,
to awaken us all to the reality of how connected we all are
and to work together to create the community and world
we all want to be part of.
Amen.
(adapted from Christian Aid prayer in Love Never Fails)
Postscript As at 15th June:
Funerals Funerals in church are now permitted. St Andrew’s will be open
for funerals. We are putting in place measures to ensure that we comply with
Church of England guidance about physical distancing, cleaning and other
safety measures.
Weddings There is as yet no date for weddings being again permitted in
church.

Can you help your Community?
NOTE—We have already had a response to the plea below which was placed on our local social media pages THANK YOU! However, if there is anyone else who is interested in helping out, please contact us as extra helpers are always welcome. Is there anybody who is computer literate and would be able to help us out producing the Parish magazine
Since the start of the lockdown period, I have been editor for all of the issues (online and printed). Our second editor has been unable to take his turn over the past few months as he and his wife have been staying safe at home. He has done a great job as co-editor. However, in the current circumstances, he would prefer us to find someone else to take it on, with new ideas to help make the magazine interesting and informative for residents of all ages. It has been great to receive lots of new items and pictures recently and we would like that to continue.
We have recently purchased a new W10 laptop and are using Publisher (Office 365). The laptop is set up so that it can be shared by the editors to keep the material in one place.

he explains the story behind the inspiration for each painting.
It is A5 size. Priced at £6, he is donating a third of the
proceeds to NHS Charities for NHS
Staff, Careworkers and their families.
The Original Paintings are also for
sale and are fully
mounted and Size
