Dear Friends,

We are pleased to bring you this first Annual Report under our new name: Bethany Hill Place. A community of neighbors that links affordable housing and educational opportunities, we are a Place where our residents can live, learn, and grow in safety while they fully engage in and transform their lives.

Our residents, all of whom have experienced complex and difficult life challenges, seek hope every day through individualized education plans, counseling, and many supportive pro-grams. They participate in workshops on life and job skills, parenting, and financial literacy; computer instruction; and for our younger residents, Homework Club, Reading Club and summer camp. We never stand still; we incorporate best practices with new initiatives such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities during summer camp and we respond to parents’ needs as we have with a new series of workshops on childhood mental health. Bethany Hill Place fosters an inclusive community, allowing residents to come together to support one another in their individual dreams for a better future.

In her keynote address at our 2016 Spring Gala, Basma told her family’s story, a remarkable journey of many thousands of miles through violence, hardship, and uncertainty that brought her to Bethany Hill Place. “Now that my family and I are at Bethany Hill, most of our problems are solved and we always feel supported. But the biggest support for me is to have somebody I can trust.” Basma’s story, and that of Armindo’s family on the opposite page, are just two of many that affirm the importance of community and unity in building and rebuilding lives.

We want to thank you, our generous volunteers, donors, and in-kind contributors, for helping to expand the horizon of hope for Bethany Hill Place residents of all ages. You are vital and greatly appreciated members of this wonderful community.

Armindo’s family became homeless after he unexpectedly lost his job as a mechanic. They lived in a shelter for 10 months and were glad to finally move into one of Bethany Hill Place’s transitional apartments. Armindo was relieved to have a safe place for his large family. He has settled his five children in local schools and found a job next door at St. Joseph Hall where he can be close to home. The kids have made friends

and are enjoying afterschool activities at Bethany Hill Place. Best of all, this wonderful family will be able to stay at Bethany Hill permanently because he was eligible for a four-bedroom unit that recently became available. Armindo stresses the importance of education to his kids and hopes his eldest will go to college, setting an example for her siblings.

The success of the Bethany Hill Place model is our dual focus on work skills as well as foundational and life skills. We require involvement in education and/or training as a condition of residency. Our small staff and large corps of volunteers offer meaningful in-house programs and support to enable residents to meet the requirement and achieve their goals.

Bethany Hill Place is a Sponsored Ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston.
