Neil Orchard Senior News July 2018
Jenny Ta ~ Editor
“Hot Summer Days” By Heather Schelske
Neil Orchard Senior Activities Center Supervisor
We said Aloha (hello) to summer with our annual Hawaiian Luau. This year, the
spectacular entertainment was provided by Uncle Andy and the Ohana Dance Group.
Uncle Andy strummed the ukulele while the lovely dancers put on an amazing
performance. Mahalo (thank you) to our generous sponsor, Atria Senior Living, who
catered the delicious menu and to the Cordova Senior Advisory Board who made sure
the drinks were flowing. Make sure you check out the calendar insert and our Facebook
page for pictures of the festivities from that evening.
Did you know that July is National Parks & Recreation month? To celebrate, Cordova Recreation and
Park District will be hosting its annual Party in the Park in conjunction with the CRPD 60th Anniversary
Celebration. The event will take place on the evening on Friday, July 20th and will feature live music from
the City of Trees Brass Band, food trucks, vendors, a kids zone and new this year, a beer and wine
garden. This is one event you won’t want to miss! See inside for more details.
What do you call a dog with a fever? A hot dog! Join us on Monday, July 23rd for National Hot Dog Day.
After the hot dog BBQ, active NOSAC members will be treated to free ice cream! Not yet a member? Sign
up today! See inside for more information.
Remember that temperatures during the summer can quickly reach the triple digits and it’s necessary to
take precautions to ensure that you, your family and pets don’t suffer from the effects of extreme heat.
Make sure you drink plenty of water, wear lightweight and loose fitting clothes, stay indoors where there’s
air conditioning and try to avoid direct sunlight during peak heat hours. If you are unable to cool your
home, make your way to public places such as the mall, library or supermarkets to try to stay cool. You
can also dial 211 on your phone to reach the Senior Resource Hotline to try to find your nearest cooling
center.
The senior center will be closed July 4th through 6th in observance of the Independence Day holiday and
for cleaning. We will reopen on Monday, July 9th.
I hope everyone has a fun and safe Fourth of July!

top five needs:
1. Individual rides
2. Affordable caregivers or housekeepers
3. Affordable housing
4. Help finding senior services
5. Maintenance person or handy man to fix things
around the house
Did you know that we offer the Senior Resource

These are both FREE guides to resources and
information in and around the Sacramento area.

Gardening News
By Claudia Alstrom
The Green Thumb Garden Club is
always looking for help in planting
and maintaining the vegetable
garden, as well as the flower
gardens inside and out. Please
join us on the first Wednesday of
each month at 10:30am.
Our Green Thumb Garden Club members are Ann Thomason, Bill Wells, Gretchen Simmons, Judy, Judy Kho, Kurt Linn, Linda Gates, Liz Otero, Marilyn Hamm, Marjorie, Rell Schwanke, Roxie Jones, Shirley Gladfelder, Lois Leal, Reta Douglas and Claudia Alstrom.
CLEANING YOUR PRUNING SHEARS JOYUSGARDEN.COM
If your pruners are scrubbed and sharpened, the
plants will be much happier because the cuts will
be clean. You’ll enjoy the whole process a lot more
too as your pruners will open and close smoothly
making it so much easier on your hands, wrists
and arms.
• Scour them with Bon Ami; a natural cleaning
powder which does the trick but doesn’t
scratch. You can also use baking soda but Bon
Ami has more scrubbing power.
• Give the pruners a good rinse
• Dry them off with an old t-shirt & sharpen with a
sharpening tool – possibly a whetstone.
• If they’re still a bit dirty, give them another
scouring. Rinse & dry just like above.
• Wipe with vegetable oil or spray with WD40 to
get any rust & more plant residue off. This step
also keeps your tools lubricated & working
smoothly. I now use grape seed oil instead of
WD40 because it’s a natural alternative &
works well. Any vegetable oil does the trick –
you choose.
• Let the lubricant soak in a bit & then wipe off.
An old sock works the best rather than some-
thing like paper towels.
Now that your pruners are all cleaned and sharp-
ened like brand new, you’ll be ready for your next
pruning extravaganza.
Join us on Thursday, July 19th for our
monthly birthday celebration!
