Neil Orchard Senior News March 2018
Jenny Ta ~ Editor
“March to Your Own Beat” By Heather Schelske
Neil Orchard Senior Activities Center Supervisor
March is such a lovely month, but it’s also a fickle one. It never seems to be able to
decide whether it’s ready to warm up or cool down. We’ll have beautiful days where the
sun is shining and the flowers are blooming, then there’ll be blustery days with howling
winds and intense storms. This unpredictable month is the perfect time to celebrate a
holiday filled with mischievous leprechauns. Join us on March 14 for our annual St.
Patrick’s Day Celebration. Sponsored by Atria Senior Living, the event features a
traditional meal of corned beef and cabbage with all the fixings. Make sure to bring your
dancing shoes so you can dance a little jig along with the Your Musical Memories Band. See inside for
more information about this festive event.
Speaking of celebrations. Last month’s Chinese New Year Celebration was a tremendous success!
Everyone enjoyed a delicious feast of Chinese food and an amazing demonstration from our Tai Chi
class. A big thank you to our Tai Chi class and La Rae for the wonderful entertainment. Check out our
Facebook page for a short video recap of the event.
BINGO!! Save the date for the Cordova Senior Advisory Board’s Bingo & Baked Potato Fundraiser on
Saturday, April 14. Enjoy a delicious baked potato bar with all the fixings while helping the center. All
proceeds raised from this event go directly back to supporting the Neil Orchard Senior Activities Center.
See inside for more information.
On Saturday, March 31 we will be hosting our annual Hoppin’ and Huntin’ event at Hagan Community
Park. Bring your grandchildren and great-grandchildren because this egg hunt is great for all ages. In
between egg hunts, there will be a pancake breakfast, vendors and a kids’ zone. Come say hi to our
Senior Advisory Board who will be there with a booth passing out information about the senior center.
“May your troubles be less, and your blessings be more, and nothing but happiness come through your door.” Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!!!

They’re there to re-pave the walking paths and

consists of a path equipped with stations
distributed along its length for exercising the
human body to promote good health. Daily
operation at the Neil Orchard Senior Activities will
not be affected during this process. This is a great
addition to the park and we can’t wait for its

Our Green Thumb Garden Club members are Ann
Thomason, Bill Wells, Bonnie Tuter, Gretchen
Simmons, Joann Bodlak, Judy, Judy Kho, Kurt

AMARYLLIS -
Did you have a show stopping amaryllis this winter? With the right techniques, you can enjoy many more years of abundant bloom. Here's how:
WINTER - After the amaryllis has bloomed, trim the flowering stalk to within a couple inches of the bulb. Keep the soil barely moist and give the plant bright, indirect light and temperatures around 60 degrees F.
SPRING - Move the plant to a sunnier location (southern exposure, if possible) and start fertilizing regularly with liquid fertilizer. The goal is to get the plant to grow lots of leaves.
SUMMER - Move the plant outside to a part-sun location. During warm spells, you may have to water the plant daily. You can even plant the bulb directly in the garden for summer. Continue regular feeding with liquid fertilizer.
FALL - In early fall, withhold water, which will help the plant go dormant. Be sure to bring the bulb indoors before frost, if necessary. After about a month, the soil and foliage should be dried out. At that point, take the bulb from its pot and shake off the excess soil. Store it for about eight weeks in a cool, dark place.
After the rest period, "wake up" the bulb by repotting it in fresh soil and resume watering — sparingly at first. Once you see new growth, increase watering. You can expect another floral display within five to eight weeks.
Join us on Thursday, March 15th for our
monthly birthday celebration!
