VOLUNTEER & STATION NEWS Dynamic Duo Retires from Super School News For 38 years, volunteers have made it possible for 5th and 6th graders to produce 2-minute news broadcasts about their schools which appear on the air. This program introduces children to the world of broadcast news. If you would like to volunteer, contact Susan Barber [email protected] Eleven years ago, Cathy Tomlinson after 32 years of volunteering RMPBS for live auction, archives, and telephone banks decided she needed a change. Super School News (SSN) tweaked her interest but she wanted someone to share the experiences, to work through issues, and most importantly to share a laugh and have fun.

Cathy Tomlinson Jan Lytton Jan Lytton, her fellow church volunteer had begun walking Arvada trails with Cathy and seemed like a perfect choice. When Jan agreed, they began one of the longest serving volunteer team positions at Rocky Mountain PBS. Cathy and Jan chose several schools each year, worked with the teachers and students to present viable, exciting broadcasts and received accolades from their schools for their professional, caring, and dedicated jobs. They were instrumental in developing a “Story-line Power Point” about choosing newscast topics which has become the standard criteria to present to student anchors during each Orientation for SSN. Cathy and Jan love seeing the excitement and pride as students observe their hard work come to fruition with a completed newscast. Teachers and students alike consider them “real treasures” as they work through the process with each school. Though both have fond memories of their experiences one especially stands out as an “Oh, My Gosh” moment. One school wanted to bring a bucket of water to throw over a reporter who was doing a story on dolphins. Cathy and Jan checked with Trux and he told them to go ahead. Tarps were placed on the floor to cover electrical cords. When Jan went to check on the kids filling the bucket, they had filled it to the top. It was a bit more water than the adults had planned on. The students were convinced to empty about two-thirds of the water. The reporter was still drenched and it created the effect they desired and SSN made it happen for them. Cathy and Jan leave with some words of wisdom for current and new volunteers. “New volunteers should go to a school with an experienced volunteer and observe for the first semester in various areas. Volunteers should also observe all tasks at Orientation before committing to a specific area or workshop. It is much easier to work as a team because if one forgets, the other remembers and covers.” These two stellar individuals with a combined record of 2,000 hours for SSN know they will miss the camaraderie of the SSN volunteers and working with the production staff and schools. It was not an easy decision to make but both want to travel more with their husbands and Cathy has a responsibility helping with her grandchildren.

Jan reflects on both her and Cathy’s sentiments. “ SSN was a worthwhile volunteer commitment and one we will miss. It is a wonderful learning experience for the children. It fits into the state standards and having CEA as a sponsor reinforces the educational experience for everyone.” The volunteer corps and staff of Rocky Mountain Public Media thank Cathy and Jan for their years if dedicated service and wish them the very best as they pursue new adventures. TIDBITS OF HISTORY ABOUT ROCKY MOUNTAIN PBS

By Laura Sampson | Founder | Station’s Archived Memories (SAM)

Since its inception in 1956, Rocky Mountain PBS (then known as KRMA-TV) has always recognized the value of connecting and communicating with its viewers to inform them of the month’s upcoming programs while also relaying news on such topics as station personnel, new local and national programming, special community events and much more.

During the 1950s and early 60s, the monthly schedule was known merely as the KRMA Program Schedule or Program Hilites. The station’s archives indicate that in the mid 1960s, the monthly program publication became known as Promo and has maintained that title since that time.* As station membership increased and mailing costs increased right along with it, an evolutionary milestone was realized for Promo in 2008. In the interest of saving trees and to cut the station’s expenses, Rocky Mountain PBS announced the concept of E-Promo. The expense of publishing the printed Promo had become enormous: nearly $15,000 per issue -- printing and shipping included -- to send paper versions of the guide to 45,000 members. In June 2008, RMPBS began offering an electronic rather than a printed version of the monthly program guide. The concept of the electronic program was gradually introduced as viewers steadily signed up to receive the E-promo. Initially, viewers could decide themselves to “opt-out” of the printed version to download the

electronic version. By late June, two hundred members had joined the effort to save paper consumption and station expense by signing up for the electronic version that consisted of three components: program highlights, an at-a-glance calendar of primetime programs and the full schedule. As an extra bonus, free calendar wallpaper featuring RMPBS programs was offered on the RMPBS website.

By February 2009, the electronic version gained popularity. Of the station’s 63,000 members more than 1,000 had opted to receive the e-version. By May of the same year, over 2,100 people made the switch with 45,000 members still receiving the paper version. In May 2009, a viewer survey was taken to evaluate whether the membership dollars were being put to their best use by continuing a printed version of Promo. As a result of the survey, December 2010 marked the date when the last issue of Promo was printed. Since January 2011, members began enjoying their E-Promos via email.

Today, viewers receive the monthly and weekly E-Promo that contains links to a vast amount of information on the RMPBS.org website with details about RMPBS and

KUVO programs, information on the fabulous RMPBS Passport, a thorough guide to community events, the full RMPBS schedule, the Primetime Calendar, RMPBS KIDS Schedule plus the schedule for Create. Click to learn more! Next time you receive a monthly E-Promo, take time to fully explore it. You will be astounded by its remarkable content. Stay informed . . . if you’re not yet signed up for the weekly newsletter, just click here. * NOTE: The RMPBS archives are lacking original Promos of 1961-1962 as well as 1976 through 1978. If you have any Promos from this period that you’re willing to contribute to the archives, please contact the RMPM archive office at 303-620-5734 or email [email protected]. Researched information is from the Rocky Mountain PBS archives, Station’s Archived Memories (SAM). If you have inquiries, would like to volunteer for SAM or have items to contribute to the RMPBS archives, please contact the SAM office at 1089 Bannock: 303-620-5734 or contact [email protected]. Volunteers play a critical role at Rocky Mountain PBS. The Rocky Mountain PBS volunteer corps donates (on average) 15,000+ hours per year.
