VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

DENVER (RMPBS & KUVO)

Weekend Opportunity: Be a Rocky Mountain PBS Ambassador at the Five Points Jazz

Festival May 19th

The Five Points Jazz Festival, now in its 15th year, brings people together for a day of food, fun and

fantastic music. The free festival takes place the third Saturday of May each year and celebrates the

history of Denver’s Five Points neighborhood.

This year Rocky Mountain PBS will have a booth at this amazing event, right next to KUVO’s booth!

We’re looking for a few passionate volunteers to work the booth and share information about our station

with attendees for the morning shift (9:00 am-1:00 pm) and the evening shift (4-7:30 pm). We need 3

volunteers so volunteer and bring a couple of friends. We will provide schedules, one sheets and other

materials for you to share with anyone who is interested. It’s a great opportunity to talk to others about

why you love Rocky Mountain PBS, while also enjoying this legendary festival!

If you are interested in participating, contact Susan Barber at [email protected].

Special Event at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science-Tuesday Evening-June 12 On Tuesday evening, June 12, RMPBS and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science will partner together to screen an episode of “Kingdoms of the Sky.”

May 2018 Volunteers Do It All! Thanks go to all the RMPBS and KUVO volunteers for their service. Early each month, the Volunteer Bulletin arrives by email and is also posted at www.rmpbs.org/volunteer. It delivers news, volunteer opportunities and volunteer appreciation. We welcome your comments, feedback and ideas. Email us at [email protected]. Note: Rocky Mountain PBS often uses volunteer photos online, on TV, and on our social media sites to help show the positive impact our volunteers have in the community and how important they are to Rocky Mountain PBS. “Kingdoms of the Sky” is a landmark three-part series made through a partnership between PBS and the BBC. These programs reveal the extraordinary wildlife and remarkable people who live and thrive among the peaks of three of the most iconic mountain ranges of the world: the Rockies, Andes and the Himalayas. On Tuesday evening, the episode on the Rockies will be shown at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

We need 3-4 volunteers to assist with check-in and greeting guests. The approximate time period (still yet to be determined) is from 4:30-7:00 pm. Volunteers are welcome to stay for the screening. If you would like to assist, please contact Susan Barber [email protected].

Mailing Assistance for the Great American Read Assist with mailing information out to libraries, book stores and book clubs about the Great American Read. This person(s) would work with the RMPBS marketing department to set up a schedule for mailings. Very flexible hours and would start in June. Contact Susan Barber [email protected].

Stocking the Little Library at Denver Station Starting in June, a volunteer would come in the Denver Station and stock/restock the Little Library in front of the station with books, book marks and stickers. This would be done once a week through September at a time convenient to the volunteer. If interested, contact Susan Barber [email protected]

Donate a book! To help promote the Great American Read, RMPBS will be installing Little Free Libraries around the state. Help us fill these libraries by donating a book to one of our offices in Denver, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction and Durango! Thank you for helping us support lifelong literacy and learning!

Help Us Preserve Our Programming! Are you a fan of Rocky Mountain PBS and have enjoyed our programming over the years? If you answered yes, we would love to have your help preserving these productions. It’s both a walk down memory lane and a peek into the future.

Join other volunteers who are doing this preservation work with the Station’s Archived Memories project. Basic computer skills would be needed and database experience is a plus. You will be trained by fellow knowledgeable volunteers. This is an on-going weekly opportunity for 4 hours/week. For the first 2 months, you would need to be trained on Mondays. Following the training, the days and hours are flexible.

If this interests you (and we hope it does!), please contact Thomas Muja at [email protected] Thanks!

Station Archives Memories (SAM): Memorabilia Volunteers − General Memorabilia volunteers (3-4) are needed to review the existing Station’s Archived Memories

• Available to volunteer at Rocky Mountain Public Media (Denver) during business hours. (Specific days to be determined by the volunteers)

• Must have strong organizational skills with a keen eye for detail.

• Must have strong computer skills and familiarity with databases.

• Duties include reviewing data in the existing Memorabilia database for accuracy including item details and follow-up actions that are required.

• Job requires some physical strength. Volunteers must be physically able to lift and move storage boxes containing memorabilia artifacts.

• Experienced SAM volunteers will provide thorough training materials for the job. Contact Susan Barber [email protected] if interested.

Announcing a New Category of Volunteer Opportunities: VIRTUAL VOLUNTEERING What does “Virtual Volunteering” mean? It means volunteering from your home (or other) with your computer on your time from anywhere in the state. These opportunities provide individuals who may not be available during the day to support Rocky Mountain PBS and/or KUVO through volunteering. (However, if you would like to volunteer and come into the station, that is certainly possible.) In this next year, we look forward to developing these opportunities further.

1. Station’s Archived Memories Project (SAM): Would you like to volunteer your time to help preserve important RMPBS documents but do not want to or are unable to travel to the RMPBS station in Denver? We need a person to use the internet to research some selected websites and then email pdf files to the SAM office. Computer skills are needed (and a computer with access to the internet). Training will be provided so the volunteer understands the type of information needed. This will only take a few hours per month but should be done weekly. If you are interested, please contact Susan Barber [email protected].

2. The Great American Read

CARPE LIBER! Leading the way on “Virtual Volunteering” --- volunteer anytime from anyplace! RMPBS will test-drive a “virtual volunteering” experiment by developing a simple social media toolkit for volunteers to promote the next incredible nationwide PBS initiative: The Great American Read. Volunteers will use their community, business and personal connections to promote this initiative. And, this initiative is all about reading and books and conversation.

THE GREAT AMERICAN READ is an eight-part television and online series designed to spark a national conversation about reading and the books that have inspired, moved, and shaped us.

Page 4: May 2018 - Amazon Web Servicespbs.bento.storage.s3.amazonaws.com/hostedbento-prod/filer_public... · Mailing Assistance for the Great American Read Assist with mailing information

The series will engage audiences with a list of 100 diverse books. Audiences are encouraged to read the books, vote from the list of 100, and share their personal connections to the titles.

THE GREAT AMERICAN READ premieres Tuesday, May 22 at 8/7c on PBS stations with a launch special, kicking off a summer of reading and voting. Then in the fall, seven new episodes of the series will air as the quest to find America’s most beloved book moves into high gear. Episodes from the series will feature appearances by celebrities, athletes, experts, authors, and everyday Americans advocating for their favorite book. www.rmpbs.org/greatamericanread

Virtual Toolkit: Information about the book list, the quiz and selection information can be found on www.rmpbs.org/greatamericanread. Share stories with Susan Barber [email protected]

1. Spread the word about the Great American Read (GAR) list of books with your friends, family and colleagues via social networks, email, word of mouth. Link your friends to RMPBS Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and share the webpage www.rmpbs.org/greatamericanread

2. Have fun with your network taking the GAR quiz and competing with friends and colleagues (and business associates) to see who has read the most number of books on the list.

3. Set up a competition between employees of your organization/business with another organization/business (or with other book groups) to see who can first reach the goal of reading all 100 books by September. Contact Susan Barber [email protected] with the results!

4. Are you in a book group or know of different book groups? Send Susan Barber [email protected] contact information/name/address/email for your book group so that we can send you additional information and some fun things! Love to publish this list (without contact information—of course) in the Volunteer Bulletin.

5. Talk with your local libraries and bookstores to provide information about GAR and encourage them to create a display with some of the GAR books.

6. Kids in school? Share the list and information with the teachers. GAR could certainly provide summer reading for students!

7. Organize a “watch-party” for the inaugural program on May 22nd and repeat in the Fall for the other episodes.

VOLUNTEER & STATION NEWS

Rocky Mountain Public Media Salutes Volunteers! April was Volunteer Appreciation Month and RMPM honored volunteers with celebrations. In Colorado Springs, a group of volunteers gathered at The Warehouse restaurant on April 16th to enjoy a tasty and heart-felt thanks from RMPM. Elyse Jones, Community Engagement Coordinator for RMPB/Colorado Springs expressed her thanks to the volunteers. “Thank you to all the volunteers who attended and those who couldn’t attend. You are all so very much appreciated in all the hard work and time that you dedicate to Rocky Mountain PBS.”

Page 6: May 2018 - Amazon Web Servicespbs.bento.storage.s3.amazonaws.com/hostedbento-prod/filer_public... · Mailing Assistance for the Great American Read Assist with mailing information

In Denver on Friday evening (April 20th), approximately 175 volunteers and staff (from both KUVO and RMPBS) gathered to celebrate the incredible work and dedication of the volunteers who make the work of RMPM possible! Staff hosted the volunteers and thanked them. Food was provided by Catering by Gloria and music was provided by the Annie Booth Trio.

A short program honored volunteers. Amanda Mountain, President and CEO of Rocky Mountain Public Media noted that over the past year, volunteers for Rocky Mountain PBS and KUVO have donated 17,788 hours of service to this organization worth $355,864 equal to 8 and one-half full time employees. These figures represent a significant return of investment (ROI) ----made possible by the generous donation of time, talent and energy of volunteers.

Susan Barber, Volunteer Coordinator for RMPBS, thanked volunteers and made special mention of those volunteers who, over the past 10 years, have donated their time to the StoryMakers short-story contest. Volunteers at Rocky Mountain PBS have presented and managed StoryMakers, a short-story contest for 6th, 7th and 8th graders in the state of Colorado. Young authors have submitted approximately a total of 8,000 short fictional stories from a variety of schools---public, private, parochial, charter, online, and from students who have been home-schooled. Volunteers have served as administrators, public relations/marketing coordinators, volunteer recruiters, logistical coordinators and, most importantly, judges. Each year 65 volunteers participate donating approximately 500 hours of service/year----that’s a 10-year total of 5000 hours.

Susan also paid tribute to the new volunteers who joined the ranks in 2017. She noted that volunteers want to work with RMPM because they believe in the mission and vision of RMPM. Volunteers believe in the importance of public media…….an independent source for news, culture and entertainment, public affairs, history and education. Carlos Lando, President and General Manager of KUVO, presented the Jim Barnes award to volunteer Matt Herzberger. The Jim Barnes award was created to honor Jim (who passed away in 2015). Jim was a part of the KUVO family for over 28 years, both as a major donor and volunteer. Matt Herzberger received this award for his extraordinary service. Thank you Matt!

Matt Herzberger

Thanks go to all KUVO and RMPBS volunteers. We are grateful to you each and every day. You somehow manage to make all this work! A slide show of the event is located at www.rmpbs.org/volunteer. Matt Herzberger

Capital Campaign Update

April 24, 2018 Rocky Mountain Public Media, parent of Rocky Mountain PBS and KUVO Jazz, has raised 77% of its $30 million Capital Campaign goal—that’s $23 million year-to-date to keep us on track to break ground in August for our new headquarters, the Buell Public Media Center in Denver’s Arapahoe Square.

Our most recent gift comes from Koelbel & Company, a transformational $1 million investment to support the new building as well as our underwriting efforts. KUVO’s main broadcast Studio A will be named in honor of the Koelbels’ generosity—their name will be recognized in the building and on the air for years to come! This note gives us an opportunity to highlight their gift and thank them publicly. The Koelbel Family and Koelbel Company’s decades of philanthropy are one of the main reasons Denver is such a great place to live.

In addition to the naming of the main studio, we have more news from KUVO regarding the vision for the Phyllis A. Greer Legacy Series, which will premiere in the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Performance Studio during the grand opening celebration of the Buell Public Media Center. This event will signal the official hand-off of the performance studio name—a passing of the baton—from the Phyllis A. Greer Performance Studio at KUVO’s Five Points headquarters to the new Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Performance Studio in the Public Media Center. This innovative new series will feature a special musical performance and profile of a prominent jazz artist every quarter, allowing us to preserve the legacy of the original performance studio, which was inaugurated in 1996, and start a new tradition in the brand new space. Phyllis’ legacy will be recognized in the Phyllis A. Greer Music Library and Archives.

Super School News Volunteers Thank Cynthia Hessin

Former Super School News executive producer, Cynthia Hessin, retired this Spring. As the 38th year of Super School News draws to a close, volunteers would especially like to thank Cynthia Hessin for her support and guidance.

Through her teaching she inspired hundreds of students, parents, and faculty advisors in broadcast journalism. When addressing a group at Orientation she demonstrated every part of the newscast process. As a role model to students, parents, and volunteers she distinguished herself as a successful TV journalist. Thank you for your inspiration and production of

Super School News.

Appointment to American Archive of Public Broadcasting Stations and Producers Advisory Committee

Laura Sampson, Rocky Mountain Public Media volunteer since 1974

and Founder of Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) recently accepted a

3-year position on the new Stations and Producers Advisory Committee

(SPAC) of the American Archive of Public Broadcasting

(http://americanarchive.org/), a collaboration between the Library of

Congress and the WGBH Educational Foundation.

The AAPB SPAC is a newly founded committee of individuals from

across the country that work in the public media community who are

passionate about the long-term preservation and access of historic public

broadcasting. The purpose of the committee will be to guide and assist

the AAPB with outreach within public media communities, especially with regard to preserving and

making public media content more accessible.

The SPAC will provide guidance to the AAPB Project Team in supporting stations and producers of public

broadcasting with preserving their work, helping develop ideas on services, address the needs of stations

in regard to archiving, provide advice on significant collections for preservation, and more.

Laura’s invitation to join this committee noted that her enthusiasm, experience and leadership of the

Rocky Mountain PBS Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) program could greatly benefit the AAPB

project. Laura’s term will run from June 2018 - June 2021. Congratulations, Laura, and thank you for

RMPBS Investigative Reporters Win National Award What do Ashley Judd, Reese Witherspoon, Lori Jane Gliha and Marybel Gonzalez have in common? It's winning a Gracie Award! https://allwomeninmedia.org/gracies/2018-gracie-winners/ This is a national award!

Lori Jane Gliha Marybel Gonzalez

The national Alliance for Women in Media announced the 42nd annual awards, which recognize exemplary programming for, by and about women. RMPBS investigative reporters, Lori Jane and Marybel, led the work on the Insight special “Traded and Trafficked http://www.rmpbs.org/insight/traded-and-trafficked/, which investigated child trafficking in Colorado. It won the Gracie for local television investigative feature! Congratulations Lori Jane and Marybel!

The Civic Impact of RMPBS’ Investigative Journalism Team: Legislative Notes from the Colorado Legislature From Laura Frank, Vice President of Journalism, RMPBS on May 1, 2018 The Colorado House of Representatives passed a bipartisan bill that would increase human trafficking training for law enforcement and other organizations that provide services to human trafficking victims. We reported in November, in Traded and Trafficked, that the state had not implemented mandatory training for Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification despite a Colorado Human Trafficking Council recommendation that Colorado officers receive additional training.

The House also passed a bill aimed at improving the safety of adults with intellectual disabilities who live in host homes has passed in Colorado’s House of Representatives with a vote, 34-29.

Our investigation earlier this year, Protecting the Vulnerable found cases of mistreatment, abuse,

neglect, and negligence involving some Colorado host homes, including the case of Tanya Bell, who died in a 2016 fire when she couldn’t escape in her wheelchair.

Finally, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing today on "red flag" bill introduced yesterday that would allow a judge to remove firearms from someone in a mental health crisis. As part of the hearing, lawmakers and witnesses watched Imminent Danger, our investigation of how our current laws impact those with mental illness and guns. That special report included exclusive interviews with the parents of Aurora theater shooter James Holmes and the mother of Matthew Riehl, who killed a Douglas County sheriff's deputy on New Year's Eve before being killed himself.

Longtime Volunteer Tom Rountree Passes Away

Janet Rountree wrote in to inform us that her beloved husband, Tom, passed away unexpectedly on March 29th. Tom and Janet spent many years volunteering for Channel 6/RMPBS. They volunteered for the Auction, beginning in the early 70's, chaired the Kids event, helped at the phone bank productions, hosted guests and picked them up and delivered them to the Station, etc.

Janet and Tom Rountree

Tom will be missed. RMPBS sends our deepest sympathy to Janet and to their friends and family. Janet stated that if people are so inclined, they can remember Tom by donating to Children's Hospital, 13123 E. 16th Ave., Box 045, Aurora, Co. 80045, or the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, Rocky Mountain Chapter, 1805 S. Bellaire, Suite 285, Denver, Co. 80222. Tom and Janet volunteered for these charities for many years.

TIDBITS OF HISTORY | ROCKY MOUNTAIN PUBLIC MEDIA

by Laura Sampson | Founder | Station’s Archived Memories (SAM)

A milestone moment . . . . SAM is celebrating 18 years!

Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) will celebrate its 18th year

of archiving the station’s history on May 30, 2018. The archive

project was initially proposed to the Volunteer Board on

February 2, 2000, the project was approved on March 28, 2000

and the original archive committee held its inaugural meeting on May 30, 2000.

After a year of archive work, SAM volunteers realized the need for extensive funding to continue

creating a comprehensive archive of the station’s history. So, SAM submitted a request for a

major grant from Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) which was approved on April 1,

2002. A second grant to create and distribute a SAM Toolkit to every PBS station was

approved by CPB on January 27, 2003.

To this day, SAM is unique as the only volunteer-driven archive in the public media system.

SAM has made tremendous strides in the archive collection. Over the past 18 years, more than

200 volunteers have given their time and skills to SAM. New volunteers, working from home or

on location at Rocky Mountain PBS, are welcomed throughout the year to volunteer for SAM. A

minimum six month commitment is requested of all new SAM volunteers.

History is being created daily and, likewise, the archive work is done daily Monday through

Friday during business hours. The archives continue to provide historic information upon

request from community or national researchers, viewers, staff and volunteers. With over 60

years of station history, the archive is filled with incredibly detailed information!

Whether you enjoy viewing the remarkable PBS and local programs on Rocky Mountain PBS,

are fascinated by history, want to meet and work with like-minded public media volunteers or

you are just plain curious, Station’s Archived Memories would welcome your volunteer help.

Interested? Please contact Susan Barber, Volunteer Coordinator, [email protected].
