Dark Horse Tres Blueberry StoutFrom spencer: : Dark Horse Brewery started as a restaurant in Marshall, Michigan in the late 80s. Aaron Morse talked his father into changing the restaurant he owned into a brewpub. These guys brew some pretty awesome beers including their Crooked Tree IPA as well as five of the best stouts found in the United States. The beer we are sampling this month is the #3 in the stout series of beers from Dark Horse. The Tres Blueberry Stout explodes with a rich chocolate and malty flavor as you first taste the beer then finishes with a very subtle blueberry pie flavor. One of my favorite fruit stouts! This beer weighs in at 7.5% ABV and only 20 IBUs. It is released once a year in late December.
From Tim: We had this recently on The Less Desirables and we enjoyed the fact that this stout wasn’t particularly thick, the mouthfeel is lighter in body while still hanging with good stout flavor that happens to be infused with delicious blueberries, that don’t overpower the stout profile. I rated it 4.25 pints out of 5. The higher ABV is always a plus for me, as I enjoy that flavor of alcohol, as well. Very good stuff. Don’t let the fact that it’s a winter seasonal worry you. It’s not too heavy for the summer. Slàinte!

The area that used to house the Big Winston tobacco warehouse has gone through a lot of cool changes in the
last couple of years. You have businesses like Black Mountain Chocolate and the new Broad Branch Distillery in there. And, there’s also Big Winston Lounge. Big Winston Lounge was opened in October, 2015 by Mark Jacobs, whom his friends call, “Boom.” It is an upper scale lounge. It’s certainly not a sports bar, as you’ll find no televisions; talk to people. It’s not a live music hall, although, it is common to find live jazz played there on Friday nights on the covered patio. It’s not uppity and it’s not a dive bar. It’s a lounge, bottom line. There’s not a lot of plain and simple in here. With custom made furniture, comfortable seating, artistic wall coverings and exposed brick Big Winston Lounge makes for a comfortable and destination-driven establishment with top-notch atmosphere and elegant ambience. But, wait, there’s more! There are champagne wells laid about the seating that provide a place for dates, parties of both intimate and larger
sizes and just ordinary hangers-out to keep their wares cold while experiencing the company, atmosphere and music that people come to enjoy. Big Winston Lounge also focuses on craft cocktails and doesn’t use store-bought mixers, such as sour mixers, Tom Collins mixers and sweet and sour mixers. They use real fruit and natural ingredients to make those craft cocktails fresh. That’s something some fast-service bars can’t afford, nor have time, to do. Big Winston Lounge has a multi-tap “long-draw” system that houses many local craft beers and they have bottled beer as well. But, Boom was insistent that craft cocktails are their bread and butter. The room is quite spacious at 3000 square

Are you ready for the endless barrage of phone calls, mailers, television commercials, radio
spots, emails, social media posts and more? It’s an election year, which means it’s coming whether you like it or loathe it.With politicians using so many ways to try to get their message in front of you, it’s easy to be worn down, fatigued by information overload. Savvy scammers know it, and use this season of passion, mayhem and vulnerability to steal consumer identities. From fake political donations to phony surveys, election-related scams are dangerous due to the believability of each scenario leading up to November. Better Business Bureau has compiled
four common election season schemes, including red flags to watch out for, and tips on how to avoid them.Campaign Fund CollectionsImposters can easily-enough sound like legitimate political party representatives from the other side of the phone. These scam artists will likely call to ask you for a donation. If you receive this type of call, do not feel pressured in any way to donate immediately. Instead, collect the caller’s contact information and let them know you will be doing your own research before donating, but will do so through verified avenues. If they are legitimate, they should have an official campaign website which generally allows safe online donations.

election scams: Another political stressor

You should also be able to call the phone number of the campaign office or mail in a check to their verified office address if the campaign fund is legitimate.re-register scamIf a caller warns you that if you didn’t vote in the last election you’ll have to re-register, this is a big red flag. Scammers will say you’ve been removed from the list of registered voters and that your personal information is needed. You should never give your information to someone you haven’t verified
is legitimate, even if they claim to be representing an appropriate organization. Consumers who receive calls about their voter registration record are encouraged to hang up and call their state Board of Elections directly to verify and update their record.election survey scamElection surveys are common, but having to pay for a prize you won due to your participation is not. Scammers may call to invite you to take part in a survey being conducted on behalf of a political party. And, how exciting – Participants are eligible to win a prize! After they ask legitimate-sounding survey questions, the callers typically ask for a credit card number just to

pay for the shipping, taxes or handling of the prize won. No matter how much you’d like to receive the prize, realize this collection of card information is done with the intent to commit fraud. Legitimate polling companies do not offer such prizes for telephone survey participation. They will certainly never ask for a credit card number.Vote By phoneIf you receive any communication – phone call, text message, email – asking you to vote by phone, ignore it. You can only cast your voting ballot by mail, using official absentee ballots applied for well in advance and received by the deadline date, or in-
person at an official polling station. Scammers will contact consumers about voting by phone in hopes that they are able to solicit identity-revealing information. If you do receive a call about voting by phone, just hang up.No matter what a caller is claiming, you should never authenticate yourself to anyone unless you are in control of the interaction! For more information or tips, visit bbb.org/nwnc, If you think you’ve received a scam call, share about it on BBB’s online Scam Tracker to help warn others in the Triad area.
