Story by Ted Sweetman, Safety Manager
Tyler Pipe selects a NEW facility Safety slogan during June Safety Awareness Month!
There were many safety activities from different departments during June’s Safety Awareness month. The Safety department with the help of HR devised a plan for a Safety slogan contest with the winning slogan to be printed on T-shirts and then distributed to all team members. There were many good slogans submitted from both
salary and from hourly team members. The judges had 39 slogans to choose from and it was no easy task. The winning slogan was from Don Teer, one of our Master Electricians with almost 17 years of employment here at Tyler Pipe. The team of judges selected “SAFETY IS OUR CAST IRON RULE” which truly reflects both the culture at our facility and the importance we place on safety.
Putting all this together took team work and coordination from a diverse group of people from several departments. I would like to provide a special thank you to the judges: Jennie Shephard,
Greg Simmons, Dan Nelson, Jimmy Allen, Jason Sieben, and Rod Burrus, as well as Annette Scholer from HR for coordinating the design and ordering the t-shirts; the safety department is currently passing out the shirts to our team members – and everyone Loves them! Just look; the pictures will say it all!
Also during the June Safety Awareness month a special toolbox talk was issued to the plant explaining the new Globally Harmonized Labeling system (GHS). All container labels as well as safety data sheets will be updated to be in compliance with these new regulations. Posters with the new pictograms and hazard classifications were posted in team member’s breakrooms as reminders, which explain the meaning of the new pictograms. (see picture of poster below)
I saved the best for last: Tyler Pipe has broken our last record for injuries without a LOST WORK DAY (LWD)! Our previous record was 292 days and our NEW record is 356 days! Way to go team!

Welcome back to your
favorite game show...
We had a few guesses as to whom
these fine folks are to the right but
we only had fourTeam Members that
guessed all four correctly. That was
Jerry Reeves, Charles Minnick,
Desmond Haskett & Richard Bell.
All four names were put into a hat
and Annette, our
friendly HR Assistant,
drew the winning name,
Desmond Haskett.
Desmond is the winner
of a new Tyler Pipe

Our North Eastern Distribution Facility is finally open for business! Welcome to the McWane family
South Plainfield, New Jersey.
I had a chance to speak to Jerry Kosloski, Distribution
Manager of Tyler Pipe East, about his sprawling
66,000 sq. ft. facility that sits on 6 acres of property.
Jerry and his crew have been very busy unloading
trucks coming from Tyler, Texas to build up their
inventory. The Lawyers closed on the property on the
16th and Jerry and his crew started receiving material on
the 23rd of June. Prior to receiving their first load Jerry
had to designate areas for the product and clear off an area
for all of that inventory. The warehouse is stock piling
fittings, gaskets, seals and short lengths of pipe as all of their inventory will be stored
inside. As soon as the storm water permit comes through Jerry will start building up his
stock of quality Tyler Pipe to serve the bustling New York market. When I asked Jerry
what his operating scope was he said that he would be covering the North East all the
way down to Virginia and possibly as far over as Ohio. What I did not know is that
South Plainfield is just fifteen minutes from New York City where sales are always on the increase as commercial
buildings populate the skyline. Jerry stated, “Our competitive edge is that we are going to keep all of our product
inside and out of the elements so we can offer our customers the best product available on the market today.” The
Tyler Pipe East Distribution Facility is off to a good start and within months will have the product and location to
provide top quality Pipe, Fittings and Gaskets to our valued customers at a moments notice.

On Friday, July 15th Tyler Pipe said goodbye to over 81 years of combined service to two of our
longtime shipping team members; Tommy Stone 37 years of service and James Warren with 44
years of service. A huge BBQ luncheon was held in their honor. Even though
James could not attend the celebration, it did not stop us from wishing him the
best of luck in his retirement.
After 37 years, Tommy Stone decided to hang up his hard hat and put on his
ball cap. He now has plans to enjoy life with his wife Gail and the new grand-
baby. Tommy’s career at Tyler Pipe was spent both as an hourly team member
as well as a salaried team member. It was in 2004 that he was promoted as a
salaried team member working in shipping as a Receiving Coordinator and he
now ends his career as a Shipping supervisor. With his vast amount of
knowledge on shipping procedures for Tyler Pipe, Tommy was very instru-
mental these last few weeks in assisting setting up our New Jersey Distribution
site. Tommy said, I’ve been here for 37 years and the company waits till I’m about to leave to decide to
send me across the country.
I asked Tommy what he will do now that he doesn’t have to report here every day, and he said he has a part time job lined up
working no more than 3 days a week a few hours a day; because that’s all he wants, just enough to keep him busy. Tommy
and his wife will be missed here. You see both of them were very active in participating in our community events. Gail said
she loved being an active participant in all the community events we sponsored such as Relay for life, East
Texas Food Bank just to name a few. Of course, we told her not to let Tommy’s retirement stop her because
she will have an open invitation to participate in all of our future events.
Tommy & Gail, we wish you both lots of luck and wishing you the best in your retirement.
