“Religion is like a beach. Religion is like a beach. Religion is like a beach. Religion is like a beach. We can dig in the sand to see if we can find buried meanings beneath the surface.

We can build castles called cathedrals or temples or mosques, but in the end they will all be washed away by

the tides of time. We can go out into the deep waters of thought, but never too far alone for fear of losing

ourselves in an ocean far bigger than we can ever imagine. We can have fun or we can get red in the face.”

- Climbing Stairs of Sunlight by Steven Charleston

I was struck by this metaphor as I read my daily devotional from a book given to me by some St. Peter’s members. It almost reads like one of Jesus’ parables, especially those that begin: the kingdom of God is like… Here, Charleston proposes something a bit more familiar and perhaps much closer to our grasping, religion is like a beach… As our family is preparing for our annual trip to the beach it resonated with me in many ways. We like to see if we can dig a whole to the other side of the world, but don’t usually make it more than a foot. We like building sandcastles and returning the next day to see if they’re still around (usually not). Some of us like to ride the waves; others prefer to bob peacefully up and down. We always have fun and sometimes get various shades of red in the face too. But of course, Charleston is talking about more than the beach. Charleston is talking about the beach but also talking about our faith. His words resonate for me there too. I think the part that resonated with me the most this week was “we can have fun or we can get red in the face.” Often in the church we get a little too uptight and take ourselves far too seriously. One thing I’ve always appreciated about St. Peter’s is that it’s a congregation unafraid of fun. We know that our mission and ministry is serious work, but this doesn’t mean we can’t have fun doing it. For some years the mission we co-founded, Spirit in the Hills, in Spicewood (now a full-fledge congregation) ended its worship “Go in peace. Serve the Lord” as many Lutheran churches do, but the response was something a little different. Instead of “Thanks be to God” for the response, the congregation would joyfully shout, “And have FUN doing it!” Perhaps summertime is a good time to remember that serving the Lord can be and should be FUN. Case in point: our semi-annual meeting and I Scream, You Scream, We ALL Scream for Ice Cream Social on July 12th. Religion is like a beach. Which part of Charleston’s metaphor resonated with you? Share your thoughts with me this month – stop me on a Sunday, give me a call, post it on Facebook, or send me an email.

- Go in peace. Serve the Lord. And have FUN doing it! Pastor Casey

stewardship

In May, Nick Bohmann talked about our youth getting more engaged in our church, and how they may well be our church’s next generation of leadership. This month I’d like to bring to the forefront how our children can get a special opportunity to grow as people, as members of our congregation, and as members of our community. The Junior High youth just returned from a trip to Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp in Colorado and this month the SPLAT youth will be attending the ELCA National Youth Gathering in Detroit. Both trips offer more than the exposure to growth through Bible studies and activities; they will allow each person to meet new friends while developing their understanding of faith. This is a huge opportunity for all involved. By being able to discuss things with others of their age that have grown up in a different state or way of life, you get to broaden how you view things when you’re learning. Mark Twain said “Travel is fatal to preju-dice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” This wider view of the world and how one can participate in improving it will open up doors that might otherwise never have been available and allow each one of our youth to learn more, and be more, than they thought possible. You can’t help but wonder what great things can come from these trips. What growth can occur in the

faith of those who attend?!

SchoolSchoolSchoolSchool NEWs St. Peter’s Lutheran School

St. Peter's Lutheran School has been busy filling spots for the fall

semester. We are full in the Extended Learning and PreK class and have

only a few spots available for 3 year olds and Kindergarten. We will con-

tinue to register new students over the remainder of the summer. We are

looking forward to the new school year!

We have just finished our yearly training for all of the teachers, and we are thrilled to say

that we did it for FREE this year! We were able to HOST our first (hope to be annual) Serve

With Love Continuing Education Conference for local preschools. The conference was held over

the course of three days and provided educators 24 hours of required continuing education

hours. We want to THANK our wonderful presenters who volunteered their service: Stacy

Houy, Anna Womack, Belva Latshaw, Lindsay Pyle, Aaron Pyle, Dave Leighton, Sarah Garrett &

Lindsey Humphries (Phoenix Center), Cari Orts, Melissa Fletcher, Allyson Black, Pastor Casey,

congregation for providing light breakfast and snacks for the attendees: Mayrean McDonough,

Jan Starkey, Jan Wilde, Jayne Schoonmaker, Carolyn Wessels, Kimberly Sandman, Elise Shirey,

Belva Latshaw, Carol Leighton, and Martha Lind.

The school continues to strive to be a ministry to families and the community! We thank our

congregation for supporting us in that mission!

All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

The Invention of Wings, Chapters 3-5

Monday, July27th at 2:00 PM

The historical novel is inspired by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke and written by Sue Monk Kidd, the author of The Mermaid Chair and The Secret Life of Bees. Here’s a bit about this story: Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women. Kidd’s sweeping novel is set in motion on Sarah’s eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership of ten year old Handful, who is to be her handmaid. We follow their remarkable journeys over the next thirty five years, as both strive for a life of their own, dramatically shaping each other’s destinies and forming a complex relationship marked by guilt, defiance, estrangement and the uneasy ways of love.

TheListeningTeam“Listening out to our church, community and beyond.”

In our May meeting we listened UP with a devotion based Paul’s ministry in various ways and places (Acts 16 & 17). We considered: What can we learn from Paul’s experiences with sharing the good news of Jesus? We noticed his willingness to take risks, try different things, go to where people are. We also noticed that he often met opposition. We then discussed the following based on our listening OUT to our community: the community needs, neighborhood assets, God’s presence in the neighborhood, our gut feelings about the community, things we were curious about. As we finish our listening OUT process, we will begin preparations to listen IN to our St. Peter’s community. We look forward to sharing a little bit about both at our Semi-Annual meeting on July 12th. In the meantime, if you have an idea or question for the Listening Team please don’t hesitate to contact the members: Charlie Selman, Carol Moquist, Steve Reitz, Allyson Black, David Martin, Amanda Fancher, Samantha Shirey, Tait Johnson, Pastor Casey, Pastor Vanicek, and Dave Leighton. Please also remember to hold this group and the work we are doing in your prayers.

St. Peter’s Green Team is for anyone interested in finding and sharing ways to care for God’s creation.

We seek to BOLDLY live and share God’s grace through reducing, reusing, and recycling.

July Green Tip: Run appliances such as clothes dryers and dishwashers at night to avoid peak energy rates and the humid heat they generate. Excess humidity is more than uncomfortable -- it can also be expensive, since air conditioners use extra energy to process the moisture. Consider joining PEC’s “Beat the Peak” program by reducing energy usage during peak hours (2pm - 6pm). St. Peter’s energy usage: June Energy usage: 6185kWh / $640.37 YTD energy usage: 42471 kWh / $4341.73

Through generous donations from our congregation, St. Peter’s was able to send a check in the amount of $845.00 to Upbring, for aid in the disaster response and clean-up efforts from the recent spring floods in our area. Church Business St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Council Minutes

May 19, 2015

The Church Council meeting was called to order at 5:30 PM by Craig Magerkurth. Present at the meeting were Kimberly Sandman, Jerry Bostick, David Leighton, Richard Schroer, Pastor Casey, Craig Magerkurth, Brian Hicks, and Kathy Nobles.

Pastor Casey opened the meeting with a handout entitled What comes to mind when you think of “Together, BOLDLY living and sharing God's grace with all," and what does the word living mean. Discussion followed and Pastor Casey pointed the council to Genesis 2:7 where God breathed into Adam's nostril and man became a living being, and in Genesis 3:20, where Eve became the mother of “all living.” And in the New Testament in John 4:7-18, Jesus tells the Samaritan woman if you knew the gift of God and who it is that is saying to you "give me a drink" you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water to drink.

One correction to the minutes was made, that being the correct date was April 21, 2015, not April 19, 2015 as presented. A motion to accept the minutes as corrected was made by Bryan Hicks and seconded by Kathy Nobles. Motion Passed.

Dave Leighton gave the treasurer's report and stated that expenses were high due to the fact that the Lenten offerings were donated to the respective recipient Synod Assembly Offering (LSPS & LSSS). The average Sunday offering was very good, but the total Building in Faith receipts for the month were slightly less than needed to cover the mortgage payment. Dave has compiled graphs showing averages for monthly giving and monthly attendances. A short discussion relating to these graphs followed. Dick Schroer made a motion to accept the treasurer's report and Bryan Hicks seconded. Motion Passed.

SNOPP RQRSTNU: Pastor Casey gave her report and said that the pictures included with the report are the feature this month. There is much to celebrate and some to grieve: School is completed for the summer, some of our youth are graduating from high school are things to celebrate and several deaths of our members for grieving. Bibles were presented to 5 students on May 3 and the Blessing of the Graduates was held on May 10. The choir cantata was well received by a large attendance and offering. Pastor Vanicek was not in attendance at this meeting, and it was reported that he is busy planning the youth trips for this summer. 11 youth and 3 sponsors are attending the trip to Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp and 17 youth and 4 sponsors attending the National Youth Gathering in Detroit. He also recently attend the Family Sea World Trip. The Children & Family Ministry Report was presented and one of the items discussed was "Youth Appreciation Sunday". The youth will cook and serve breakfast during Sunday School hour on May 24 as a thank you to all of St. Peter’s. All complete staff reports are available.

Business items up for discussion and passage were the following: 1. An AED (defibrillator) procurement was presented by Pastor Casey. A motion to purchase this item was made by Jerry Bostick and seconded by Bryan Hicks. Motion Passed. 2. Installation of a WebCam for increased security for the school hallway was presented by Pastor Casey. A motion to purchase this item was made not to exceed $350 and to split the cost with the school was made by Richard Schroer and seconded by Kathy Nobles. Motion Passed. 3. An honorarium for Sue Briner - July 19, 2015 preaching/presiding was presented by Pastor Casey. A motion to present her with a check for $250 was made by Jerry Bostick and seconded by Bryan Hicks. Motion Passed. 4. Richard Schroer presented 5 items that the Property Committee has been looking into. The Silver Sage in the parking lot and the creek area cleanup were discussed and it was determined that the committee should talk to Dan Hanshaw to see if he could do the cleanup and Bryan Hicks would talk to the city to see if they could help clean up the creek. The Eave painting job has been delayed because of all the rain but the painter reported that he should be able to do the job in mid-June. The Property Committee looked into purchasing an ice machine for the fellowship hall and decided the disadvantages far outweighed the advantages and scrubbed the idea. Carpet cleaning of the Offices and the Sanctuary is scheduled for the 27th of July.
