Relationship Status: Are You in the Friend Zone? By Elyssa Schwartz

Paid for just one at the movies? Talking about the most recent hook up sesh? Has your crush traded in hugs for fist bumps? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you, my friend, have been friendzoned.

Being stuck in the dreaded friend zone is irrefutably one of the most frustrating and awkward situations. You want to be around that person as much as you can to prove how amazingly rad you are – but you don’t want to overdo it either. You play it cool; but maybe you’re playing it too cool.

The reality of developing feelings for a friend is the fear that if you confess those feelings, you might learn they don’t feel the same way back and, instantly, your friendship is ruined. Rejection is no party, and we all have to face it at some point in our lives.

Unfortunately, life rarely reflects the Zack and Miri Make a Porno-esque romance-comedies that end with formally platonic BFFs falling in love. If you’re trying to get past the friend zone, it’s important to communicate your feelings from initiation. This is key in all relationships of course, but especially the ones where a great friendship is on the line. Hopefully, being open about your altered feelings will save a lot of trouble and pain, but most

Page 9: Delray Beach Passport Spring 2015

9

likely, you will probably have to deal with a good amount of awkwardness. However, it’s worse to be afraid of rejection. Be proud, confident and take control of your own feelings.

Keep in mind that it is possible to cruise out of the friend zone with a little persuasion and influence. Just remember to focus on your own worth and never express desperation. Allow some space for the other person to miss you. Make some friends outside of that friendship and create a little competition. Finally, let that friend invest in you and reward them for it. If they truly value you in their life, then they’ll be much more likely to take the relationship to the next level.

Worst-case scenario, if the feelings aren’t reciprocated, you’re friends because he/she genuinely likes being around you which should be enough to keep that person in your life. At the end of the day, friendship is what really lasts.

If you're stressing out over the fact that your crush is or might be "just a friend,” learn how to read the signs.

• When you invite your crush out and they invite other people along • If it’s a blossoming friendship and you’re not introduced to their friends. • It’s typical that they bring up how hot other people are. • You’re always splitting the bill or paying for your own things. • If your crush only describes you as “Nice”. • They are constantly labeling and emphasizing that you are BFFs. • The two of you have a few drinks together and still no interest is returned.

Spred the Dub’s Mick SwigertBy Neysha Bauer

Exclusive Interview

25

Making a name for yourself in a world that’s seen it all is no easy task. Emerging from sunny South Florida, Spred The Dub has overcome the barrier of repetitiveness by creating a unique sound they describe as a mix of dub, blues and ska rock. I got the chance to, not only meet vocalist, guitarist, song writer and all-around cool-dude, Mick Swigert, but also picked his brain about Spred The Dub’s journey to stardom. He’s charming, sexy and a fabulously bewitching front man with a genuine love for spreading the joy of music to all who are willing to listen. Check out what he has to say about himself, his band and the South Florida music scene. Catch them on Monday nights at LongBoards in West Palm Beach, and for more on upcoming shows and tour dates, visit www.spredthedub.com. Delray Beach Passport: What Name do you prefer to go by, Mick or Mickey?

Page 26: Delray Beach Passport Spring 2015

Mick Swigert: Mick! They used to call me Mickey Moore, but nobody calls me that now. DBP: Where did your band name, Spred The Dub, come from? MS: The first thing we get all the time is, “are you guys talking about weed!?” but that’s not the case. Our anniversary is 4/20, but we got our name because we had a percussion player who was a chef. He would make all kinds of organic and raw foods – for lack of a better word, he was a hippie – and he had a company called Spread The Love. We were trying to think of a band name at the time, and we were listening to a lot of Reggae since we, obviously, all played Reggae. We listened to a lot of late ‘60s and early ‘70s dub (it consisted of a lot of base and heavy drums) – really great stoner music. We loved dub, so we called ourselves Spred The Dub even before the whole dub craze. DBP: What inspired your second, and most recent, album? MS: Personally, I go through phases when it comes to music. Right now I’m at a real 70s-punk kick and I listen to a lot of country. Everybody goes through phases, and I’ve been listening to a lot of early ‘60s Reggae like Alton Ellis, Jasmin Decker and early Bob Marley (which sounds nothing like the Bob Marley that most people know – it sounds like old school Detroit Motown). Every time we were in the studio we would jam on this stuff which is very bluesy, and that’s really what inspired us. DBP: You are recently becoming a local staple, and standing out as established artists. How does that feel? MS: It’s awesome, it makes you feel like you’re actually doing something. Every time we play a show, I see people dancing and smiling – I love it. There’s a lot of s*** going on in the world, but

Page 27: Delray Beach Passport Spring 2015

27

people still come out and listen to good music, have a good time, and nobody gets into a fight. It’s great. DBP: What’s your favorite song on the new album? MS: It’s hard because they’re all kind of new, and I like new songs, but I really like “Coming Home Drunk Tonight.” It’s awesome because we really love to play it just because its fun to play – it’s a drinking tune. DBP: Where do you and the band enjoy going out in South Florida? MS: Propaganda in Lake Worth! It’s our favorite place. Out of all the venues you go to see music, it’s the best. People come out to see live music, and the music that’s happening is incredible. There isn’t a huge music scene down here and I feel like that’s because theres so much to do, but Lake Worth is the home turf of amazing bands like “Every Man.” They just got back from a big tour all around the U.S., and last time we were out there it was amazing to see all the people who came out. I feel like we’re building something like that here. We’re building up a scene where people come out and they like your music, they buy the original CDs and buy your merchandise, and go on iTunes and purchase your original CD. It’s very rare that people go out and see an original band and know their songs, but it’s happening.
