VALE ~ John Worswick

John Worswick was a long time member of the Thunderbird Club having joined in 1982.

He held various roles within the club over the years, always energetic and enthusiastic. A

legendary leader who was passionate about everything T’bird, a true car guy, buying and

selling many cars over the years, right up ‘til the very recent acquisition of his 1957

Mercury.

John and Faye opened up their lives and home to the Thunderbird club over the years. I

am sure I speak for a large number of members when I say that John will be dearly

missed. John was one of a kind, loving life and most certainly giving it his all. John will

be remembered by many for his genuine and generous nature, he will remain in our

hearts.

Our Sympathy goes out to wife Faye and daughters Christine and Karen for their loss.

National Presidents Report

Hi TBirder’s

Well winter is upon us and there is a chill in the air and most of the Tbird’s are

tucked up nice and dry waiting for perfect sunny days or maybe summer.

Well the Presidential run to Forbes and the McFeeter Car Museum was a

success. Forbes seems such a long way away from Sydney, however once you

get over the Blue Mountains it really takes no time to get there. The weekend

was sunny but cool however I understood that Sydney was rainy so we picked

the perfect to get out of the big smoke. The Car Museum is really worth a visit

and the owners are really keen to have car clubs visit.

As usual, during winter Victoria and NSW both have a very active club

schedule, including weekends away and State titles. The NSW State Titles

were at Port Stephens this year and it was a great weekend for all even if there

was a little rain. I was able to get a permit to move and drove my Thunderbird

to the event, with a second place trophy to boot. There was the Early Ford Day

at the Ettomogah Pub at Kellyville in NSW which TOCA (NSW) supports and

gives us yet another excuse to show off our Thunderbirds.

Great to see a number of new members coming into the club as well and I

would like to extend a big welcome!

NSW had a Winter Getaway in June to beautiful Orange and I didn’t attend

that event due to farm commitments however everybody was very positive

about the weekend. I noticed in the various states calendars that there are a

number of festivals and swap meets where members can attend. NSW has the

“All Ford Day” at Sydney Motorsport Park (formally Eastern Creek Dragway)

on the 19th of July which will be a big event and of course there is the CMC

day on the 16th August at Sydney Motorsport Park. This is the one I look

forward to, as it is a chance for me to take my Thunderbird out for a drive, and

money permitting out on the track Saturday for the Morgan Car Club

Supersprint. I am not interested in fast lap times as they will most likely be

around the 2mins 32secs, maybe more. I have some “semi slick” tyres to try

out so it may be fast. My Mustang does an easy 1.25 around the North Circuit,

however this Supersprint is on the GP circuit which is longer.

TOCA (NSW) has a great display at the CMC event on the Sunday and I love

being part of it. This is a fantastic event with over a 1000 cars on display and

many, many clubs.

Of course we have a National Concours in Wagga Wagga fast approaching

(25th to 27

th September and I know this will be a great event

We were all saddend to hear about the passing of John Worswick TOCA

(Victoria). Our best wishes are extended to all his widow and family. Losing

one of our long-term members and a fellow Thunderbird owner is hard and the

National Committee sent a floral tribute from all of our ThunderBird family.

Mike Barton, Naional President

Ann Gonzalvez Memorial Trophy

This is a perpetual award named in honour of a great individual, who

helped put the Thunderbird Owners Club Inc (TOCA) on the map. The

Award commemorates the memory of Ann Gonzalvez who gave

devoted service to TOCA for many years. Ann passed away sadly in

2003 following a battle with cancer. Since her passing, Ann has been

sadly missed, both personally and for all of her efforts towards the

betterment of the Club. Ann made TOCA happen in so many ways and

there were many important things that Ann's influence has encouraged

within the Club. Ann was always happy and friendly when dealing with

all members. This Trophy was first awarded at the National Titles in

2004 to Glenn & Dianne Pye. It is awarded to a couple/member by

his/her peers. This is the ultimate recognition that any Club person can

receive.

The following criteria apply for a couple/member to be nominated:

All nominations must have shown dedication to the club and its

members.

All nominations must have clearly undertaken activities that

have assisted with the Clubs events/Clubs administration.

All nominations could include, but is not limited to, the

following:

o Someone who persistently strives to assist the club in its

achievements.

o Someone who regularly supports the club by attending

club meetings.

o Someone who always displays a positive attitude

towards the club.

o Someone who displays good camaraderie.

o Someone who has shown the willingness to assist new

club members.

o Someone who regularly supports and attends club

meetings.

For the purposes of these awards only financial members of the

Thunderbird Owners Club of Australia Inc (TOCA) can

nominate a person or persons.

Nominations for the Ann Gonzalvez Trophy can come from an

individual member, collective membership, or State Committee.

Nominations must be forwarded no later than one month

before the AGM each year to the National Committee.

There can only be one award each year.

The current National Committee will take on the responsibility

of the selection panel, and are not eligible for selection.

The perpetual trophy will be presented at the National Titles or

Report for June/July.

Welcome All,

Two month’s seem to roll by very quickly and before I realise, it’s time

for the next magazine to be compiled. We are now three months past

the due date for membership renewals and sadly we have now lost 34 of

our members across Australia, and strangely most of these members

had only joined in the last year or two.

NSW Report

G’day all,

Since the last magazine we have had a number of member’s requests for

day trips and I have included them into the programme. Also the 2nd

half of the year programme has been included into this edition.

We have had a couple of country trips and it is pleasing to see the

country and city folk get together with much enjoyment and stories. The

T-bird gods were kind for the Forbes trip by giving us good weather.

16 July 2015

Mike organised a good weekend with some visits to the local history

museum, the car display centre and a tour around. The watering hole

was nice and close, within staggering distance, right next door. Thanks

Mike, the entertainment and the company were great once again. We

were all wondering if that was actually a T-bird you had/have or just

another car.

The Orange trip was another good weekend away with the T-bird gods

looking after us once again, a little chilly around zero with ice settling

on the cars overnight and still there midmorning. This event was well

attended with members coming from far afield, Narrabri, Tamworth and

numerous other locations from out of the greater Sydney area. Friday

afternoon and night was very entertaining with plenty of stories and

gum flapping with a few drinks and a meal interfering! On Saturday

some of the ladies went out for some retail therapy, could not hold

Kathy back with a cruise ship rope just don’t get in front of her. Lunch

was at the Irish pub. Pete lost his virginity on the one arm (buttons)

bandits and thought it was good fun winning, not for long he learnt,

then back to the motel resting up for the main event. Once again within

staggering distance and for some a NANNA NAP. Saturday night’s

dinner was a great get together with a little over $500 worth of prizes

that had been donated for the trivia, which was hotly contested and

many appeals forthcoming and a prize draw which saw the prizes pretty

well spread around. On the way back to the ranch we visited the old

historic town of Millthorpe with a good sticky beak around and some

calorie delights for lunch.

A little bit of members news.

Pat is hoping to finally unveil the PHANTOM baby bird at the All Ford

Day. The bird has been away from Prestons for that long it may want to

steer to another place when he takes it out and is returning home, enjoy

your new vehicle.

Steve is on the countdown to the next stage of life, retirement, got news

for you Steve, Lyn will make sure that the next stage (a retirement

working career) is just about to start, in fact by the time you all read this

he will be very close with the screen saver on his computer phone

showing the countdown at almost at ZERO.

It was pleasing to see our resident PIROMANIAC win a fire

extinguisher and can keep this as a backup or 2 or 3. By now the

insurance company can recognise Chris by his voice and does not have

to say who he is. The bird is well on the way of being

repaired/restored/rebuilt, hope to see it back on the road soon.

Pat and Steve are in the initial stages of organising a venue for our State

titles for around March 2016 depending on the availability of

accommodation and a display area, more info to come.

If you have any suggestions for outings/places to visit please let me

know as the suggestions so far have been good and included into the

next ½ of the year.

I am already searching for new and interesting venues/outings for next

year. E-mail addresses below.

20 July 2015

Victorian Report JULY 2015 Hello fellow Victorian members and welcome to our new members.

By now you should all be aware that Ross is no longer our State

Director. I would like to personally thank Ross for all his efforts whilst

he was Director.

So far no one has stepped forward to fill in the position vacated by

Ross. I have taken on the role temporarily whilst Lucinda has stepped

into the role of Events Coordinator. We have volunteered to do these

duties until a formal election and nominations can be conducted at our

next State Meeting to be held on Monday the 6th

of July.

Our May event was the National Heritage Motoring day and this year it

was at picturesque Yarra Glen Race Track. The event was attended by

17 members and friends in their classic vehicles. We had glorious

weather for the day which made it such a great event. I t was good to

see some newer members attend.

For June we had something a little different organised and it was

attended by 24 members. As a club we attended the Shifting Gears

Exhibition, showcasing the Australian Auto Industry Design through

the decades, at Federation Square. From there it was a quick stroll

across the road to the recently refurbished Duke of Wellington Hotel,

Melbourne’s oldest licenced hotel for a delightful lunch. A big thank

you to member Leanne Taylor for her great organisation of this event.

A reminder to all our members that we are hosting a Christmas in July

again his year which has always been a lot of fun.

The date is 19 July, if you are considering attending please let Lucinda

know, we need to arrange for the caterer, etc. See the web site or check

Ford Automatic Transmissions

Ford in the early days called there automatic transmissions by many

different Names

1950–1965 Ford-O-Matic heavy cast iron body known as a two

speed.

While capable of three forward speeds, Ford-O-Matic started out in

second and shifted to third, with first only being used when selecting L

on the gear shift column.

The shifting pattern PNDLR.

1958–1979 Cruise-O-Matic Known as the X transmissions.

In response to heavier vehicles and more powerful engines the Cruise-

O-Matic series of three-speed automatics (which includes the

FMX).The body was made from cast iron they came in three

configurations:

the small case (from 1951 to 1966) FX

the medium case (from 1955 to 1968) MX, and

the FMX (from 1967 to 1979)

The shifting pattern, revised from PNDLR to PRNDL

1968–1981 FMX—A hybrid of the FX body with MX internals

1966–1996 C6 light weight one piece aluminium body

C6 is a heavy-duty-speed automatic transmission for high-torque

applications behind large-displacement big-block

Did you know you can identify your transmission by the pan size.

Note

Among the performance crowd, the C6 is the best and most desirable.

The FMX is probably the rarest. The C4 takes 28 hp to operate , the C6

uses up 55 hp , the FMX 25 hp and is way stronger than the plastic

explosive C4.

The Fluid Type F was originally specified due to its friction enhancers and seal

compatibility, but this rule doesn't apply with rebuilt transmissions with

new seals and frictions.

You don't have to use Type F fluid in your vintage Ford automatic

transmission anymore unless it is already serviced with Type F.

So if you have rebuilt C6, or cruise-o-matic transmission you are free to

use new type fluids like Dexron III or Mercon IV fluid. .
