BSCI: Less street art is the way to go! So the city or the government isn’t sponsoring the event anymore?

Fem Graf: No, not anymore. For me it’s a little fake. They want to promote this thing for money, and lately graffiti in Barcelona is being punished. For this year and the future, only writers make the decisions.

BSCI: What is the goal behind Fem Graf?

Fem Graf: The principal goal is to gather girls from around the world, spend the day painting and see that nowadays the ratio of boys and girls doing graffiti is more balanced. This year we were all Spanish, we will try to have more foreigners next year.

BSCI: I read a MadC interview, and when asked about girls graffiti events, she replied that it was just a way to keep girls excluded from the actual graffiti movement? What is your opinion about that?

Fem Graf: My opinion is girls are normaly excluded. Also, we do the jam on Women’s Day, in memory of all the fighting from the past. It’s a fun day where we meet all our people and enjoy. I feel it is more like a party, it’s not a competition.

Fem Graf, an all-girl graffiti jam in Barcelona, took place for the second time last February. We had a little chat with home girl Malicia, who organizes the event.

BSCI: So what is Fem Graf in a couple words?

Fem Graf: Fem is like feminine and Graff graffiti, also in catalan fem means ‘’we do’’, it’s a play of words.

BSCI: I know this was the second year, are you planning on doing the jam again?

Fem Graf: Yes we are planning to do it every year, and make it bigger. We are aiming at inviting more female artists, and maybe music, but we will see.

BSCI: The first 2 jams were at the same place?

Fem Graf: No, the first was different. It was organized with the city of Barcelona and collaboration from a company of the government. This year we were only graffiti writers organizing it, and we did it in the center of Barcelona in a really nice spot on Paral-lel street.

BSCI: Yeah i know that spot, very famous wall of Barcelona, and it’s good for skateboard movie exposure. How many girls painted last year?

Fem Graf: First year there was 20 girls, this year

not, you won’t catch the BombingScience guys there, that’s for sure. We don’t even show up to our own shows if there is no free booze.

Fem Graf: If you make a party with beer free, of course it will be full! Next year we are planning to have a special guest and also beer, but the problem is the permissions for that in Barca are hard to get nowadays.

BSCI: My homie Thes is a female graffiti artist from Montreal. She makes nice burners and takes nice photos. Will you invite her to your next jam?

Fem Graf: Sounds perfect! But the cost of the travel MTL-BCN... doesn’t sound so good. We would be really glad to have a girl from Montreal at the jam.

BSCI: Any advice for other girls who want to start their own graff jams?

Fem Graf: Good luck! Organize it for the love of it. Sometimes people don’t understand it, and sometimes people think you do it for the money, or because you are a crazy feminist. Don’t listen to them and do what you want! Shouts to all my people in Mtl, peace!

BSCI: So do guys come to your event?

Fem Graf: Yes, the writers’ friends show up. In their heart they like more girls in the graff world.

BSCI: Do you make them do all sorts of domination things with handcuffs and whips?

Fem Graf: Jajajajaja! (spanish translation for: Hahahahaha!) Not yet...

BSCI: What if someone comes to paint, and then you realize it’s a travestite? (I heard there’s a lot of them in Barca) Do you kick them out?

Fem Graf: Jaja! We told all the boys if they come with long hair, bikinis and painted nails, they can paint!

BSCI: What if MadC shows up?

Fem Graf: We will be really glad of course!!!

BSCI: And Cope2?
