by Bill Kelly, OTC President

From a spectacular Pre’s Classic the first two days of the month until the exciting just-completed Olympic Tri-als, June was one busy track and field month!

Oregon Track Club doesn’t get to rest and recuperate just yet however. We are eagerly moving into our sum-mer season with the Aquafina Butte to Butte race on July 4th, All Comers’ meets on July 11/12, 18/19, 25/26 and Aug. 1/2, and the OTC Masters Hayward Classic track meet on July 14/15.

All Comers’ is without a doubt our most inclusive community service. Bill Bowerman, the legendary U of O coach started these meets in the 1940s and they have been of-fered each summer since 1958 for youth and adults. Under Bob Newland’s guidance these meets became the national template for how to run meets efficiently with few volunteers. For the past nine years Jill Mestler has been the meet director and Liz James the volunteer coordinator of this five-week series of meets. On Wednesday evenings 400-600 youngsters 12 years of age and under run, jump and throw. Thursday sessions have 300+ athletes 13 and older who participate. The volunteers are ex-cellent and the meet is so efficiently run that it is easy to compete in multiple events. De-spite the low-key nature of the meet, it has been and will continue to be a great place for many people to achieve excellent marks. The meets can still be very competitive and su-per elite athletes have been competing in the meets for decades amongst all other levels of athletes.

A long list of dedicated individuals have acted as meet directors before Jill, includ-

ing Bob Newland, Mark Stream, Al Tarpenning, Christy Davids, Pat Lanning and Tom Ragsdale. Other volunteers come back year after year to connect with each successive generation of participants. It takes about 60 volunteers over the course of two days to run the meets. Mentioning anyone always runs the risk of leaving out someone, but two who have worked for years on this labor of love are Tom and Janet Heinonen. Never wishing to take credit, always ready to help where needed, they embody the spirit of passing on this community’s love of track and field.

Changes have occurred over time, but the schedule has been relatively consistent for many years. The “business” side has in-creased. We have added local business spon-sorship. This has been very positive to help decrease the huge expenses we incur each year. The meets operate at a loss and are considered a service to the community, not a money maker.

The meet is fun and easily accessible to all kinds of athletes. It is a great introduction to track and field for many families in a very friendly environment. As Jill states, “I was making copies at a UPS store and the owner saw the flier for the meet. He became very ex-cited and said he was going to be bringing his 18 month old to the meet that year — because he had such fond memories of attending the meets as a small child himself.” That’s the OTC and TrackTown spirit!

If you walked, jogged or ran on Pre’s Trail in the last few weeks you probably noticed some improvements Oregon Track Club made on different sections.

For the Olympic Trials of 2008, in part-nership with the City of Eugene, we com-pleted a major reconstruction project. While we have faithfully maintained this running path over the past four years with the help of member volunteers, it takes constant attention to keep it in great shape. It wears out because of high use and periodi-cally requires significant capital outlay.

In order to present the best image of TrackTown USA to the guests coming for the Olympic Trials, in late May the OTC Board of Directors approved a major renovation of the two most western loops (Green and Yellow) as well as some connector paths.

Rexius Forest By-Products generously donated a new base ma-terial that was used on this project and contracted with us to sup-ply needed equipment, labor, and expertise to do the job quickly and efficiently. A big thank you to Arlen and Rusty Rexius for their commitment to this community treasure! They have followed in the footsteps of their father, Marv Rexius, who championed the use of running paths throughout his lifetime.

Our stewardship of Pre’s Trail is one we proudly accept. As Eu-

Pre’s Trail Update: Major Renovations Completed

Before.... .... and after improvements. Oregon Track Club has completed im-provements on major portions of the trail.

The OTC Hospitality Com-mittee has their familiar tent and mobile outdoor grills ready for each Hayward Field track & field meet.

The committee feeds the team of volunteer officials and other support personnel.

This dedicated group often serves breakfast and lunch at many of the events. The smiles, jokes, encouraging comments and the food are also a wel-come part of the Hayward ex-perience.The Hospitality Crew, chaired by Ed Kousky, feeds 150 to 200 each meet. Crew members include Linda Apling, Joyce Eltz, Jeff Faust, Mary Pat Kersten, John Merk, Rick Ohlsen, and Norma H.

gene Parks and Open Spaces’ budget becomes more constrained, volunteer groups like OTC have been asked to become more in-volved throughout the parks system. Oregon Track Club dipped into its reserve fund to complete this project because of the pas-sion surrounding the Steve Prefontaine Memorial Running Trail. It is the way club members show they care about the ideas and ideals of Steve. As we move into the future we will continue to maintain this community resource as an internationally known landmark. If you’d like to support our cause, you can go to www.oregontrack-club.org and click on Friends of Pre’s Trail to help fund our effort.

Oregon Track Club Masters July 2012

All Masters, their friends and families invitedEvery year around mid-July, the OTC Masters and their friends and families gather for a very informal picnic in Skinner’s Butte Park’s Lamb Cottage.

No agenda, just food and conversationGenuinely casual, the picnic makes a great time to relax, enjoy the food and friendship, chat about memories of the Prefontaine meet, the Trials, the Hayward Classic or family vacations.

“Genuinely casual … relax, enjoy the food and friendship”

The Masters provide both drinks and the main course; you provide either appetizers, salad or dessert.

OTC MastersThe club supplies the main course: hamburgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs. The club supplies cold drinks .

YouBring a side dish, based on your last name:

A–K Salad L–Q Appetizer R–Z DessertBring your spouse or partner too.

Great Spectator Event - and no chargeBy the time you receive this newsletter, it’s a good bet that you may well have missed the late entry deadline (July 2nd) for the Hayward Classic. So consider this an open invitation to drop by Hayward Field to see some of the nation’s best Masters and sub-Masters athletes competing.

You can pick your locations around the track – near the finish line or over at the East Grandstand for the pole vault.

Hilton Garden Inn Friday packet pickupLocal competitors should note that Friday’s pickup will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn, 3528 Gateway Street in Springfield. Our more customary Phoenix Inn is thoroughly booked for the Oregon Bach Festival, occurring at the same time as the Hayward Classic this year.

by Tom Jordan, Prefontaine Meet Director

The 2012 edition of the Prefontaine Classic lived up to its advanced bill-ing, as 9 Meet and 8 Hayward Field Records were set over the two days of competition. In what will likely be-come the new format for the venerable event — America’s oldest continuing invitational track & field meet — the 38th annual Pre Classic kicked off on Friday’s Hollister Night at Hayward with rip-roaring 10,000 meter races, including the selection of the Kenyan Team in its Olympic Trials 10k. A crowd of 7,500 cheered the runners on each lap, rising to their feet in appreciation for the take-no-prisoners pace set by the Olympic hopefuls. Wilson Kiprop won the race in 27:01.98, the fastest non-paced race ever held in a World Championships. It was also the fastest Olympic Trials 10k ever run by an athlete from any country, ever.

Friday’s events were followed up on

Saturday with stellar performances on

the track and in the field. Mo Farah led

Galen Rupp under 13-minutes for the

first time in his career, with Galen’s

12:58.90 the fastest time ever run on

American soil by a U.S.-born athlete.

Liu Xiang thrilled the estimated 20 mil-

lion fans watching the event in China

by dominating an Olympic-final type

field in the equal-fastest time ever run

under any conditions (12.87w). Ath-

letes who will win medals in London in two months time, such as

Allyson Felix, Sanya Richards-Ross, Asbel Kiprop, and Reese Hoffa,

gave the crowd of 12,845 on Saturday a taste of what the Olympics

will be like. With a combined total of over 20,000 spectators — and

with just a slight dampness on Friday evening — the 2012 Prefon-

taine Classic go into the books as an outstanding success.
