TrackTown Just Misses WorldsIt took two votes and more than two hours
of deliberation for the International Athlet-
ics Association Federation (IAAF) Council to
narrowly select Doha, Qatar, over Eugene and
Barcelona to host the 2019 IAAF World Cham-
pionships. However, that didn’t make the final
result any less disappointing.
Eugene went into the selection process as
USATF’s choice to host the first World Cham-
pionships to be held in the United States. Vin
Lananna and the TrackTown USA team obvi-
ously made a strong case for Eugene to host
the Worlds, meeting all of the bid require-
ments, highlighting our reputation for putting
on exceptional events and having crowds of
knowledgeable fans to fill the stadium. Barce-
lona was knocked out in the first round of vot-
ing. Then, after deliberations that lasted an
hour longer that expected, the council voted
to award the bid to Doha with 15 votes to 12
for Eugene.
This was Doha’s second try to get the World
Championships on its soil. Doha narrowly lost
to London in its attempt to host the 2017
world championships three years ago.
Lananna and USA Track & Field officials were
philosophical immediately following the deci-
sion. “We made a bold attempt with an auda-
cious vision for this event and we will con-
by Vin LanannaAfter surviving the initial round of vot-
ing, in which Barcelona was eliminated from
contention, the IAAF Council awarded the
2019 IAAF World Championships to Doha,
Qatar, by a narrow 15-12 margin over Track-
Town USA.
The fact that we were only two votes
away from such a significant achievement
proves that not only did we present a ro-
bust and viable bid, one which exceeded all
parameters placed before us, but when it
comes to the sport of track and field, we
belong on the global stage.
By virtue of our hard work, vision and
commitment, TrackTown USA showed the
world that our community is dedicated to
advancing the sport in this country each
and every time we
hold a competition
at historic Hayward
Field.
We congratulate
Doha and feel hon-
ored to have partici-
pated in the bidding
process. At the same
time, we look forward
to building upon the
many partnerships we forged which allowed
us to get oh-so close to the finish line.continued on page 5

It was back-to-back NCAA
cross country titles for Oregon
sophomore Edward Cheserek,
second place for senior Eric
Jenkins, and a pair of sixth-
place finishes for the men and
women of Oregon at the cross
country championships Nov.
22 in Terra Haute, Ind.
Cheserek’s feat equaled
that of Steve Prefontaine, the
only other Duck to win con-
secutive titles in cross coun-
try (’70-’71). Cheserek won in
30:19.4, while Jenkins made a
bold surge in the final meters
to nab second (30:23.2) over
the 10-kilometer course. It was
the second time the Duck duo
took the top two spots on a
NCAA championship podium,
when Cheserek and Jenkins
went one-two in the 10,000-meter final at
Hayward Field last June.
The Colorado men won the team title
with 65 points. Stanford (98) and Port-
land (175) rounded out the top three. Or-
egon finished with 221 points.
The top six Oregon women finished
within 10 seconds of each other, led by
freshman Alli Cash (59th, 20:56.4) over
the six-kilometer course. Michigan State
won the team title (85) ahead of Iowa
State (147). Oregon scored 249 points.
While the Ducks’ team hope of podium
finishes at the championship meet fell
short, they put the wraps on a strong
cross country campaign. Cheserek and
Jenkins also went one-two at the PAC-12
Championships, pacing Oregon to second
behind Colorado. The Oregon women won
the team title (54) over Stanford (74), led
by freshman Frida Berge in sixth.
The men and women then swept the
NCAA West Regional meet. Stanford’s
Maksim Korolev edged Cheserek for the
victory, ending the Duck’s win streak at
seven. Meanwhile, Jenkins finished third
as Oregon (60) eclipsed Portland (71) for
the win. For the women, this time Molly
Grabill nabbed 11th to lead the pack of
Oregon women across the line. Oregon
scored 88 points, while Boise State was
second (103).

by Erin Regali, OTC PresidentIt is so hard to be-
lieve we will soon be wrapping up 2014. Where does the time go? Not long ago we kicked off our annual membership drive for the upcoming year. OTC members can renew and new mem-bers can join starting in October 2014 and their memberships are good until December 31, 2015. We have updated our membership forms and tried to provide a clear message as to the many benefits you receive as an OTC member. A great resource for the benefits is our website: www.oregontrackclub.org. Look on the pages under Member Benefits.
One of our most popular member ben-efits is access to the Nike Company Store in Beaverton. Formerly named the Nike Employee Store, this privilege allows OTC members entry into this unique store. Significant discounts on popular apparel can be found only at the company store.
Due to the popularity of the benefit and the frequent questions surrounding the policy of OTC and the Nike Company Store, we have created a frequently asked questions page concerning the proper procedures for access, which can be found on our website under Member Benefits. We would like to emphasize that our agreement with Nike allows each member access to the store once
per calendar year. It’s worth mentioning that your mem-
bership also provides numerous other benefits at our business sponsors. You can cover the cost of your OTC member-ship in short time by taking advantage of your OTC benefits.
We encourage our members to con-tact OTC’s office if you have any ques-tions with regard to your member ben-efits. We value our relationship with Nike very much and see this benefit of access to the Nike Company Store as a great privilege. We hope you do, too!

OTC Volunteer Spotlight: Todd Bosworth
Worlds
By Rita RadostitzWhen Todd Bodsworth commits to some-
thing, he never goes small. He started run-
ning in the All Comers Meets in the early
’90s and joined OTC. A decade or so later,
he was invited to join the Board and volun-
teered on the Membership Committee, and
later for the Marketing Committee.
From 2001 until 2011, Todd was the pri-
mary organizer for the Steep Hill Chase
5K, a cross country race that raised
more than $20,000 for Special Olympics.
He then put his race-organizing skills to
work by reviving the OTC Run/Walk Series,
which offers eight races each year from
March through October. After setting up
the courses, Todd often takes photos of
the competitors and posts them to the
OTC Facebook page (which he set up back
in 2010!). “We get wonderful feedback
from them,” Todd says, “It’s really re-
warding to see runners
improve, kids compet-
ing and the community
feeling it’s creating.”
When he is not vol-
unteering, Todd, his
wife Shelly, and their
sons, Weston and Cal-
lahan, enjoy skiing, bicycling, hiking and
traveling. Todd also loves to race: he runs
15 to 20 races a year, everything from 5Ks
to 50K ultra marathons, and has run Hood
to Coast 26 times. Currently he is training
to get an automatic qualifying time for
the 2015 New York Marathon. We wish him
luck and thank him for all he gives to the
running and track community in Eugene!
Todd Bosworth
tinue to partner with USA Track & Field in
attracting other major events to the U.S.,”
Lananna said. “I have no doubt that the U.S.
will field another fantastic track and field
team in the summer of 2019, and we look
forward to welcoming the world to Portland
in the spring of 2016.”
It’s worth noting that hosting the world
championships at Hayward Field was un-
thinkable and seemingly bordering on the
absurd less than five years ago. However,
under the bold leadership of Lananna, he
has thrust Tracktown USA into the interna-
tional conversation for hosting what is be-
lieved to be the third-largest sporting event
in the world.
What is even more impressive is how quickly
the TrackTown USA team marshalled nu-
merous key individuals in our community,
many of whom worked tirelessly behind the
scenes, to put a top-notch bid in front of
the IAAF Council. Oregonians, by nature, are
humble. Lananna has helped show us that
we can think bigger than the Olympic Trials,
and that we deserve to host a world-class
event at our world-class facility, cheered on
by unquestionably the most knowledgeable
track and field fans on this planet.
None of that took the sting away that
Tuesday morning when our computer moni-
tors delivered the bad news. But we should
take comfort in the fact that we ran our
best race, and left it all out on the track.

OnTrack OREGON TRACK CLUBDECEMBER 2014 www.oregontrackclub.org
That begins with you.
Without our never-ending pool of loyal volunteers, our crew
of dedicated officials, our ongoing leadership in sustainability,
our devotion to the development of youth fitness initiatives
and the best track and field fans in America, we would have
never even reached the starting line.
Our collaboration with USA Track & Field – the governing body
for the sport in this country – has never been better, and the
same can be said of our longstanding relationships with the
University of Oregon, the UO Foundation, Gov. John Kitzhaber
and the state Legislature, and all of our local leaders in city and
county government.
As I’ve stated over and over, it’s important to dream big and
have ambitious goals.
In bidding for the 2019 IAAF World Championships, we made
a bold attempt with an audacious vision and we will continue
our quest to elevate the sport by attracting major events to
the U.S.
That formula brought us the 2014 IAAF World Junior Champi-
onships last summer, a long-term deal to be the home of the
NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships through 2021, and
the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Portland.
Today, we are also looking forward to playing host to the 2015
USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in June and, for the
sixth time, the U.S. Olympic Trials in the summer of 2016.
We will also move ahead with our plans to modernize and
renovate Hayward Field into a state-of-the-art facility with
expanded seating capacity that will enhance its already well-
deserved reputation as one of the world’s most fabled venues.
Before I sign off, allow me to recognize our outstanding cross
country teams at the University of Oregon.
Part of my 12,000-mile journey over the past few weeks in-
cluded a stop in Terre Haute, Ind., for the 2014 NCAA Cross Coun-
try Championships, where I was privileged to watch the Duck
men and women compete.
Individually, UO sophomore Edward Cheserek (Newark, N.J.)
won his second consecutive NCAA title, joining the legendary
Steve Prefontaine (1970-71) as the only Duck runners to accom-
plish that feat.
Remarkably, he was followed across the finish line by UO se-
nior Eric Jenkins (Portsmouth, N.H.), who used a spirited dash
up the final hill to give the Ducks an impressive 1-2 finish. They
became the first teammates to place first and second in the
men’s championship race since Iowa State’s John Nuttall and
Jonah Koech in 1989.
It was an inspirational moment.
Congratulations to UO head coach Robert Johnson and his
assistants – Andy and Maurica Powell – for another fantastic
season in which the Ducks also swept the NCAA West Regional
titles for the first time in 26 years.
Athletics Team Members Perform Through Fall
Members of the OTC Athletics Team have continued to repre-
sent the Oregon Track Club at races throughout the fall, including
the Silver Falls Trail Runs held recently at Silver Falls State Park.
Below, Thomas Kreuzpeintner climbs up from the South Falls
in the half marathon at the Silver Falls Trails Runs at Silver Falls
State Park on Nov. 2. He went on to place seventh overall.

The Oregon track and field teams
will begin their 2015 campaigns in
January up in Washington, culminate
at the NCAA Championships at Hay-
ward Field in June, and pack in a busy
schedule in between.
The NCAA Championships return
to Eugene for the third-consecutive
year and enter the first year of a
seven-year run in Eugene from June
10-13. The Ducks will also host three
home meets leading up to the NCAA
Championships.
“We are really excited about our
home schedule,” head coach Robert
Johnson told goducks.com. “Hayward
Field will once again be the center of
track and field in the United States
with both the NCAA and U.S. Champi-
onships here in June.”
Without an Oregon Preview this
year, the 2014 outdoor season at Hay-
ward Field opens with the Pepsi Team
Invitational on April 11. Kentucky,
whose women’s and men’s teams
placed seventh and 15th, respective-
ly, at last year’s NCAA Championships
will headline this year’s Pepsi meet.
Pac-12 rival the University of Wash-
ington will round out the event, which
will be scored in a tri-meet format.
The Oregon Relays come to Hay-
ward Field the following weekend
(April 16-18). The Mt. SAC Relays that
same weekend will draw some Ducks
south to compete.
The annual Oregon Twilight, held
May 8, will mark the final regular
season home meet before the NCAA
Championships.
The NCAA meet will visit Eugene for
the 13th time this year, tying Chicago
for the most times a city has played
host to the championships.
Oregon’s outdoor campaign will
start at the USC Trojan Invitational
March 20-21. The Ducks will then head
to the Stanford Invitational on April
3-4. Also on the schedule for the sea-
son is the 121st Penn Relays (April 23-
25), followed by the OSU High Perfor-
mance Meet (May 1) in Corvallis, and
the Payton Jordan Invitational (May
2) at Stanford.
The Ducks will begin their indoor
season at the Washington Preview,
Jan. 17, as the men and women begin
preparations to defend their indoor
national titles. The Ducks will then
compete at the Rod McCravy Invita-
tional in Kentucky, Jan. 23-24, fol-
lowed by the UW Invitational, Jan.
30-31.
The team will be split between the
Husky Classic, Don Kirby Elite and
108th Millrose Games, all on Feb. 13,
before competing at the Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation champion-
ships in Seattle, Feb. 27-28.
Oregon then heads to Fayetteville,
Ark., March 13-14, to contend at the
NCAA Indoor Championships, where
the Oregon women will aim for an
NCAA record sixth-consecutive title.

Glenn Fortune Dec. 27, 1943 – Nov. 7, 2014
Glenn Fortune, an active and passion-ate advocate for youth track and field, passed away at his home in Oakridge on Nov. 7. He was 70. Glenn was the current USA Track & Field-Oregon Asso-ciation President and was involved in Oregon Track Club as an official for nearly 30 years. He was also the long-time electronic timing and photo-finish official and clerk for Hayward Field meets.
Glenn was instrumental in growing the Track City Track Club youth program in the ’80s, ’90s and 2000s when the Track City Classic Track and Field Championships saw teams from across the nation come to Track Town to compete. More than 1,500 athletes and hundreds of teams would at-tend this highly anticipated competition. Glenn took great pride in hosting the best youth track and field meet in the country at Hayward Field, and so enjoyed seeing the coaches, athletes and parents return year after year. Glenn was truly the heart and soul of the Track City Classic.
In addition to his long-time involvement with Oregon Track Club and Track City Track Club, Glenn served in numerous board po-sitions for USA Track & Field. Through a 25-year time period he was instrumental in growing the organization and guiding USATF Oregon into the electronic data era.
His wife, Francis, passed away in Octo-ber. He is survived by his daughter Lindsay, son Brian and his wife, Danelle, and three grandchildren: Fionn, Nora and Nicholas.

• $6,000 to the Eugene School District middle school track and field pro-grams. The money will be split evenly among the eight middle schools in the district. The funds will help cover the cost of participation fees, equipment and the rental Hayward Field for their district meet.
• $3,000 to the Sheldon Community Track Park Project. The funds will help cover design fees for the proposed facility at the track, which is on the north side of town and offers another option for hosting large track and field meets.
• $2,105 to Marist High School. The track and field program plans to purchase a FAT (fully automatic timing) system to be used in both high school and middle school meets.
• $1,000 to the Monroe Middle School track and field program, currently the largest program in the Eugene School District and which trains at sub-par facilities. The funds will be used to make improvements at the site. All of these granted requests support the youth in the area of track and
field; a true representation of assisting at the grass roots level for our sport. We thank all groups who filled out applications for our Grassroots Grants pro-gram this year and we encourage others to apply next year. The 2015 applica-tion process begins in August, with applications due at the end of Septem-ber. Our Club promotes interest and participation in track-and-field-related sports throughout the area. We are proud of our ability to financially support other programs having this as a goal.
