The Shepherd’s Notebook New Birth, New Life at Calvary

What will it be, Calvary?

There’s a tee-shirt I’ve treasured for the last fifteen years – so much that I save it for special occasions. Not formal dress events, mind you, but really special, fork–in-the-road, life-changing times. It’s gone to major conventions, regional and national plan-ning meetings, planning conferences and prayer retreats.

Needless to say, this special tee shirt was among the first things I packed for the move to Wisconsin and this soon-to-end season as Calvary’s Interim Senior Pastor.

On the tee-shirt's front: An all-too-familiar saying, “That’s the way we’ve always done it!” TTWWADI, for short.

On the back: An angel and a line from a classic old hymn. “Ponder anew what the Almighty can do!”

You get the point. When we practically worship things that we’ve always done before, we’re prone to repeat what’s happened in the past. When we put our trust in what we’ve always done before, for

no other reason than that we’ve always done it that way before, we’ve let the past become an idol.

But when we “ponder anew” what the Almighty has done, can do, and is calling us to do, then we focus aright – not on “we,” not on “me,” but clearly on “Thee,” the Lord God Almighty and what He longs to do with, in and through us.

So I’ve saved the tee-shirt and its messages for this final column as your Interim Senior Pastor. Since last August, our time to-gether has focused on examining Calvary’s history, charting a course for the future, lifting up and equipping new and renewed leadership, and strengthening our ties with our new extended family, the North American Lutheran Church.

Now, Calvary is reaping the benefits of a year of prayerful prepa-rations, including the welcome of a new, settled senior pastor and family. That means our relationship is changing.

After July 15, when we worship together one more time and say our farewells, I will no longer be your pastor. I will become part of your past, and properly so, just as every former pastor is to step back and make way for the next shepherd that the Holy Spirit has prepared to serve here. I will commend you to the care

of Pastor Roser, whom I count as a dear brother in Christ and in the Ministry of Word and Sacrament. I will pray daily for your mutual min-istry with him, Dawn and their beau-tiful daughters. I will watch to see what amazing things the Lord has in store for Calvary. I will always be grateful to our NALC Bishop John Bradosky and his predecessor,

Bishop Paull Spring, for en-couraging me to take the interim call to Calvary. Most of all, I will take the joy of this past year – difficult mo-ments, great experiences and deep friendships – with me as I ponder anew what the Almighty has in mind for me.

You have changed my life, helped me to be the best in-terim pastor I could be, and I thank God for that. Yet, I’m reminded that, even (or especially!) with all the posi-tive energy that’s flowing through us in this season of

interim’s end, it can be very tempting to sit back and bask in the joy of it all – in other words, to fall back on TTWWADI, with-out “ponder(ing) anew what the Almighty can do….” I pray that will not be the case for either you or me. Instead, let the words of the Lord through the prophet Isaiah 43:18-19a guide and encourage us as we go our separate ways:

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not per-

ceive it? Isaiah 43:18-19a

So may it be with all of us.

In Christ and His service, Rev. Dr. Cathi Braasch, STS On July 16, Pastor Cathi will return to the ranch in Ne-braska, for time with Red and to await the call of the church to another interim ministry after September 1st . In the mean-time, she will be volunteering with the NALC as retreat leader for seminarians and as Bible study leader at the NALC annual Women’s Gathering, both in Minneapolis dur-ing NALC convocation week.

FROM YOUR NEW PASTOR

Letter of Acceptance from Rev. Dennis M. Roser

Pr. Dennis M. Roser [email protected] http://teachingfaithinchrist.wordpress.com/

June 19, 2012

Dear Friends,

It is with great joy that I am writing to you to confirm my acceptance of your call to become your pastor. I am very excited about this opportunity to serve Christ Jesus among you. Throughout the call process, Dawn and I have been overwhelmed by the congregation’s generosity and thought-fulness. We were humbled by the warm welcome and tre-mendous hospitality that you extended to us when we were with you June 1st through 3rd.

In keeping with the standards of my current parish’s constitu-tions, I have given 30 days notice of the effective date of my resignation as pastor here. Therefore, I will continue to serve St. John’s and Trinity Churches through Thursday, July 19. I have requested that the beginning date of my ministry at Cal-vary Church be Friday, July 20. Not only am I desirous of beginning my service among you, but also when one is changing denominational affiliation, it seems important to plan for a seamless transition. Since I have only taken June 2nd and 3rd as vacation time this year, and I was only able to take 3 out of my 4 vacation weeks last year, my current par-ish has graciously allowed me to take Monday, July 9th through Thursday, July 19th as vacation time. This will al-low us to begin moving on Friday, July 13th. We are indeed very grateful to you for covering our moving expenses. Fol-lowing the loading by the moving company on July 13th, we will drive out to Brookfield on July 14th. We will be wor-shipping at another NALC congregation on Sunday, July 15th, in order to allow you to be fully present with Pastor Braasch on that day. Pastor Braasch has served you incredi-bly well as your interim pastor, and it is important that you have the opportunity to enjoy your time with her, without the distraction of our family being present.

Dawn and I want to express our sincere appreciation to you for all of the work and expense that you are investing in the parish house. Your thoughtfulness and generosity in this re-gard means so much to us. It is a marvelous house, and we

will be very thankful to have it as our home. Again, we felt very welcomed during the weekend that we visited with you, and are grateful to be invited to become a part of your church family.

I know that you are already very much aware of the superb work that the Pastoral Search Team undertook on your be-half this past year, however, I want to also commend their work to you. I have never known of another call committee who has invested the number of hours into the process, as this team has. Additionally, the amount of time that each of them invested in personal study, prayer, and the carrying out of their individual assignments is incredible. I know that you are indeed thankful for their work, and I encourage you to not only offer prayers of thanksgiving to God for their work’s sake – but also please take a moment to extend your thanks to each one of them personally.

As I prepare to begin my service among you, I not only in-vite your prayers, but also your assistance. While I will be reading through the obituaries in the daily newspaper upon my arrival, I will have difficulty in identifying those who are relations of our members. I would be thankful for your as-sistance in this regard, that I may offer care to our members and attend funeral visitations on your behalf. Additionally, I would love it if you could communicate to me concerning anyone whom you know to be hospitalized or otherwise in need of prayer or pastoral care, as well. I always tell my pa-rishioners that I would rather be told about the same situation one hundred times, than to neglect any of our members in their time of need. I am very excited by the ministry that happens at Calvary Church, and also by how many people are involved in carrying it out. I would very much appreci-ate your ongoing help in identifying who I can thank for their efforts. Essentially, I will need a lot of help from you if I am to serve you faithfully and effectively.

In Christ Jesus,

Dennis M. Roser

July Mission of the Month Watson Retreat Center at Lutherdale

The capital project that our July mission of the month will support is for energy improvements to the Watson Retreat Center at Lutherdale. The Watson Retreat Center is used year around by adults and by families during the summer camp season for Family Camp. The center is thirty-five years old and needs some significant improvements to be more energy efficient. The boiler needs to be replaced. The exterior sid-ing has begun to warp. Insulation needs to be replaced.

Lutherdale has been awarded a grant to cover a portion of the funds needed for this project. They are now working with churches that support Lutherdale to reach their goal to up-grade the Watson Retreat Center.

Your financial contributions to Calvary’s Mission of the Month during July fund the improvements to the Watson Center at Lutherdale.

Use your weekly offer-ing envelopes or a white pew envelope to contribute and note “Mission of the Month” on your check and/or envelope.

NEWS AROUND CALVARY

Pastoral Search Team Report submitted by Grace Gunnlaugsson This is our final article for the Crossroads. We are praising God for His guidance & for the congregation’s vote on June 18 to call Pastor Dennis Roser as Calvary’s next senior pastor. Pr. Roser has accepted Calvary’s call! God is truly blessing to all of us!

A few brief notes: • Thank you again for all the prayers, encouragement and support the congregation has offered on behalf of the search process. • You can read much more about the Rosers on Calvary’s website– follow the directions to the links. • The Rosers are scheduled to arrive at the parish house on Saturday, July 14. They will be worshipping in either Lebanon or Jefferson on Sunday, not wishing to take away in any way from Calvary’s celebration and thanksgiving for Pastor Cathi’s time with us as our interim. • On Monday through Thursday, 16-19, Pastor Roser and his family will be getting settled in the parish house and he in his office at church. • Friday, July 20 will be Pastor Roser’s first official day as Calvary’s pastor. (He will, of course, be available earlier in the week for any emergencies.) He will lead us in worship begin-ning Saturday, July 21. • You will find a list of Ten Commandments for Welcoming a New Pastor at the end of this article. Please read them and

take them to heart. There is humor here, but sound reminders as well. • It has been many years since Calvary has had a parsonage available to our pastor. Please remember that, though the church owns the building, it is the Roser’s home. In the old days of the life of some churches, it may have been acceptable to hold com-mittee meetings at a parsonage or even drop by or ring the bell and ask for a key to the church if one forgot his own. Not any-more! We are providing this house in lieu of a housing allow-ance. Please treat this arrangement as you have any other pas-tor’s privacy and home in the past. • As a way of welcoming the Rosers to Calvary and Brook-field, we are inviting the congregation to write a welcome note and include some of your favorite things to do and places to go in the area. Please drop off your notes in the basket on the table in the narthex over the next few weeks and we’ll leave the bas-ket in the parish house for the Rosers.

God is good – all the time! Praise His Holy name! Ten Commandments for Welcoming a New Pastor I. Thou shalt not compare the old Pastor and the new Pastor, for the Lord thy God has made each person unique and wishes you to appreciate each original creation.

Agnew-Diaz Concert

Above left: Todd Agnew. Right: Jonny Diaz & Chris Tooma-janian.

On May 3rd Calvary hosted contemporary Christian artists Todd Agnew and Jonny Diaz. The singer-musicians shared old favorites such as “Grace Like Rain” (Todd Agnew) and “More Beautiful You” (Jonny Diaz) as well as some of their lesser known works. Interspersed among the songs were inspirational and devotional words, giving the concert a worship-like feel. Along with percus-sionist Chris Toomajanian, the artists sang and played guitars, fill-ing the Calvary sanctuary with their music and words—many based on Scripture and on their faith experiences.

A big thank you to all the volunteers and staff who helped make the evening a great success: Jay Citraro, Marianne Citraro, Holly Novotny, Kris Molitor, Grace Gunnlaugsson, Larry Bonier, Lisa Hinkle (Nashotah House), Megan Sayas, Jon Sayas, Wayne Wegner, Nick Huettl, Kim Starr, Marce Kern, Ron Foster, Bea Foster, Mary Ellen Thiede, Judy Kestly, Rich Baumgartner, Tina Baumgartner, Angie Schatz, Elise Baumgartner, Mary Baumgartner, Anna Baumgartner, Molly (friend), Emma Leonard, Dana (friend), Laura Steiner, Nikki Wahlgren, and Dan DuPree.

II. Thou shalt not expect everything to stay the same when the new Pastor arrives. Nor shalt thou resist change, nor assume that change is bad, but thou shalt trust that the Lord thy God isn’t finished with your church yet and is bringing change for your good and the good of your mission.

III. Thou shalt not make graven images of thine old grudges, nor shalt thou keep stale disappointments in the temple of thine heart, but thou shalt forgive and move on in the grace of the Lord thy God, for how can thou ask God for mercy unless thou give mercy from thine heart?

IV. Thou shalt not commit gossip, nor shalt thou fearfully com-plain, nor shalt thou listen to those who do, but instead thou shalt entreat them to adjust their attitudes and lighten up, for everything shall be alright, and in fact, shall turn out very well indeed – better than you can even imagine.

V. Thou shalt not commit nostalgia or say that the old days were better, for in so doing thou shalt make thy judgment come true. Be assured that the Lord thy God is not falling asleep at the wheel, but will be with thee and surprise thee with abundant blessings, more than thou canst contain or count.

VI. Thou shalt not factionalize nor create “us-them” divisions, but thou shalt unify with thy brothers and sisters even when they annoy or confuse you.

(Continued from page 8) VII. Thou shalt not come to the new pastor with your de-mands, pressure, complaints, bad reports, manipulations, threats, agendas, unsolicited advice, or snide comments. But thou shalt say, “Welcome! How can we help you? We love you! We would like to increase our giving significantly. We’re praying for you and your family. Welcome to our community! We baked you some cookies!” And each week, thou shalt do so again and again until the new pastor begs you to stop.

VIII. Thou shalt increase thy giving, and not withhold thy tithe, but invest thy money and thine heart in the future of thy community of faith and mission.

IX. Thou shalt not come to thine old and former pastor with anything but praise for the new pastor, but thou mayest bring thy concerns to God in humble prayer, and if thou must, thou may also share concerns with the duly appointed leaders of the church.

X. Most important, thou shalt trust God, and stay connected to God, and draw strength from God, staying deeply rooted in the message of God’s grace. For God is good, and God will never leave you nor forsake you. You can count on that for sure!
