From the Headmaster’s desk…
Dear Parents and Friends of the Academy This past month has certainly proved that winter is here. It is possibly the coldest winter I’ve ever experienced here. While the weather may have been cold and we have had to wrap up, the work has been feverish. At the start of the month the apprentices had their midyear academic break. They spent some of this time at the Coastal Horse Care Unit at Cato Ridge giving of their services – see full report and pictures later in this newsletter. After their short break of two weeks, they returned to the classroom, to continue with their school work. The matrics have their trial exams shortly, and numerous oral moderations and portfolio assessments this term. I would like to congratulate the following apprentices for achieving excellent academic results, and for coming first in their respective grades, in the second term examinations:
• Grade 10 – Ryan Munger • Grade 11 – Teiller van Scalkwyk • Grade 12 – Tshepiso Mashaba
The first year apprentices were once again invited by Gold Circle, to assist with various activities at the Vodacom Durban July – see full report and pictures later in the newsletter. They all thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and on this note we thank Mr Charles Grey for his assistance and organisation, in getting the apprentices to the race track and supervising them. Juan Paul van der Merwe received an invitation from the Victoria Racing Club Australia, to race in the 2011 Asian Young Guns Challenge, at Flemington Racecourse, on Saturday 6 August. He will be chaperoned by our head riding master, Mr Rhys van Wyk. We wish JP all the best – see more information later in this newsletter. I would like to thank the South African Equine Trade Council for sponsoring their air tickets and VISA costs. During July we saw the end of the first leg of the Phumelela Gold Apprentice Challenge, which was won by Doctor Sifiso Lembethe. Keagan de Melo came second and Ryan Curling came third – see the full report and final points later in this newsletter.

JP to Fly the SA flag Down Under…
In response to an invitation by the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) in Australia and thanks to funding provided by the South African Equine Trade Council, apprentice Juan Paul van der Merwe will be representing South Africa and the South African Jockey Academy (SAJA) in the prestigious 2011 Asian Young Guns Challenge at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne Australia on Saturday 6 August. His chaperone will be Rhys van Wyk, head riding master at SAJA. This is the first time a South African apprentice jockey will compete in this prestigious event and his inclusion will automatically open the door for South Africa to one day host the Asian Young Guns Challenge. Van der Merwe is in his fifth year of being apprenticed to SAJA and is based at the Gauteng Jockeys’ Academy in Gauteng. His participation is sure to be eagerly anticipated in Australia due to the fine reputation SAJA has around the world.
Van der Merwe, who has been compared by some to the great Piere Strydom due to his outstanding balance and riding seat, had ridden 168 winners and 492 places in 1770 rides up until July 20 this year. He was the Gauteng Champion Apprentice for 2009/10 and looks to have an unassailable lead in both the Gauteng and South African Apprentice Championships this season. The Challenge features eight apprentice jockeys from seven different countries. The two Australians competing are James Noonan and Jordan Mallyon, both from Victoria, and there is also Vincent Ho from Hong Kong, Cash Wong from Macau, Ryo Takakura from Japan, Rizuan Shafiq from Singapore, James McDonald from New Zealand and van der Merwe. The Asian Young Guns Challenge, as a concept, was conceived in January 2009 by then VRC Chairman, Mr. Rod Fitzroy. It was designed to provide a platform for a racing and competition opportunity, at Flemington, to leading apprentices from Asia and Victoria, with a form of overseas reciprocity for Victorian apprentices attached. The concept was based on a desire to provide a cultural exchange between racing’s leaders of tomorrow, which would strengthen the friendly relationship that Australian racing enjoys with its Asian neighbours. After being endorsed by the VRC Board in February 2009, the concept was favourably received by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Singapore Turf Club and Japan Racing Association, while in Australia it enjoyed the support of both Racing Victoria Ltd and the Victorian Jockeys Association. The 2009 Challenge was conducted at a VRC race meeting at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday 8 August, across the first three races on the program. It received a good deal of positive media coverage and was an instant success. In 2010 the Singapore Turf Club

conducted a three race apprentices Challenge at Kranji on Sunday 18 July. Two riders from Victoria took part, alongside apprentices from Singapore, Japan, Macau, Malaysia and Hong Kong. The 2011 challenge will also be over three races, each carrying a stake of Aus$70,000, and the riders will receive 5% of any prize money won together with the normal riding fee. Racing Victoria Stewards will allocate mounts to Asian Young Guns riders on a random rotational basis, from the top eight weighted horses in each race, while any remaining horses in the field will be ridden by other available local apprentices, who will not compete for points. The points system is 25 points for first, 15 for second, 10 for third, seven for fourth, five for fifth, three for sixth, two for seventh and one for eighth. If any horse is scratched and a replacement is not available, the effected rider will be allotted six points. The winning apprentice will also receive a trophy. This is an exciting opportunity for a South African apprentice to be represented in an event of this calibre. This event will provide Juan Paul, the South African Jockey Academy and racing in South Africa in general with fantastic international exposure. The board, management, staff and apprentices at the Academy wish Juan Paul all the best and we hope he brings back the trophy!
SAJA Charity Race Day at Arlington… The Academy hosted its second Charity Race Day for 2011 at Arlington Racecourse on Friday 22 July. The event was a success generating over R30 000 in funding for the training and education of apprentices jockeys. A special function for all race sponsors and special guests took place in the Jock Andrews Pavilion at Arlington – a good time was had by all. The Fish River Sun kindly sponsored a weekend for two including breakfast as the prize for the lucky raffle draw. The winner was race horse owner Hedley McGrath.

The Lyric Consulting Apprentice Handicap took place on the day adding great excitement and value to our special event. The race was won by JP van der Merwe on ‘Primary Trend’. Ryan Roy Curling came second on ‘Coup de Foudre’, Jassurick Jordaan came second on ‘Australia Fair’ and Justine King came fourth on ‘Lily Lei’.

Apprentices at the Vodacom Durban July… Gold Circle extended a special invitation to our 1st year apprentices to assist with various activities at the Vodacom Durban July that took place at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday 2 July. The apprentices assisted in the parade ring for the jockey introduction for the main race.
They then were escorted down to the track where they assisted by holding the rope that cordoned off the prize giving area. While standing on the track waiting for the presentation to start, Dr. Zweli Mkhizhe, Premiere of KwaZulu Natal greeted and chatted to some of them. A few apprentices even got a chance to pose for a picture with Anthony Delpech immediately after he won the July.

The presence of our apprentices at this prestigious event provided the Academy with fantastic exposure. The Academy thanks Gold Circle for the great opportunity. Reaching out to the Community… Due to their outstanding care for injured, abused and abandoned horses and community work, the Academy decided to once again select the Coastal Horse Care Unit (CHCU) as its annual apprentices’ community outreach project. All the apprentices spent three days at the CHCU during July. Gillian Olmesdahl Nee Robertson, the chairperson and manager of the CHCU welcomed them and gave them all an overview of the wonderful work they do with horses and the community.

The apprentices, as usual, did an outstanding job. They also had the opportunity to socialize with Todd the colt, Godfree the goat and the many dogs on the farm.

Phumelela Gold Apprentice Challenge… 1st leg from February – July 2011 2nd leg August – November 2011
The Academy is delighted to announce that Doctor Sifiso Lembethe won the first leg of the exciting Phumelela Gold Apprentice Challenge, beating his fellow KZN apprentice Keagan de Melo by only three points. Immediately after the apprentice challenge race that took place at Scottsville on Sunday 24 July, Academy Headmaster, Graham Bailey and Wayne Kobusch, Vice Chairperson of Gold Circle KZN Racing Board presented Doctor with the prestigious Phumelela Gold Challenge Floating Trophy and a cheque for R3000. Keagan de Melo received R1 500 for second place and Ryan Curling received R500 for third place.

Two Apprentice Challenge races took place during the month of July. The first race took place at Turffontein Racecourse on Sunday 17 July and was won by Tshwaro Appie on ‘Commissionerstreet’. Juan Paul van der Merwe came second on ‘Beat the Odds’ and Donovan Dillon came third on ‘Dubai Rainbow’. The second and final race of the first leg of the Phumelela Gold Apprentice Challenge took place at Scottsville on Sunday 24 July and was won by Keagan De Melo on ‘Beabez’ for trainer Mr Egdes, Julius Mariba came second on ‘Restless Wind’ for trainer Mr Moore, Nooresh Juglall came third on ‘Spirit of Success’ for trainer Mr Naidoo and Doctor Lembethe came fourth on ‘Way Ward Storm’ for trainer Mr Dixon.

Ending off with a smile…
Three 1st year apprentice jockeys, Divan, Keanu and Nicolas are stranded on a desert island. One day they stumble across a magic lantern containing a genie. The genie pops out of the lantern and grants them each one wish. Divan wishes he was off the island and back at the Academy Keanu wishes the same. Nicolas says "I’m lonely. I wish my friends were back here".
