Many American families will celebrate the 4th of July with the traditional Parades, Barbecues and fireworks that they look forward to each year. It is a great time for family gatherings, vacations and firework shows but how many can tell you what we are celebrating? Some may ask why it matters at all, but it does, our History is what got us where we are as a nation today. In order to secure our future it is important to preserve our history. July 4, 1776 is the day that the America became independent from Great Britain by adopting the Declaration of Independence. The reason why we wanted independence from Great Britain is because they kept creating more rules and demanding higher taxes of the colonists. These strict rules and the higher taxes made the colonist angry, which made them start making plans to become and independent nation. The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson and was adopted on July 4th 1776. After being revised, it was read aloud to the public on July 8th 1776 and it was celebrated with gunfire and fireworks. Since then, Americans have celebrated our freedom with fireworks, parades and gatherings. In 1870, after the Civil War and after African Americans were freed from slavery the 4th of July became a recognized holiday. Many Americans celebrated but the 4th of July was not a legally recognized holiday until 1938. The Declaration of Independence is not just a piece of paper, it is a symbol of our country and of the dreams and aspirations that the colonists in 1776 had for our country. When the signers of the Declaration of Independence signed, signing such a document was illegal, they could have been hung for the crime of Treason by the leaders of Great Britain. These people fought for our rights and for our independence as a nation. They fought for the Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness that we all live with today. By Marcelle Baber Charter Oak, CaliforniaChanges to the starting lineup and errors proved to be costly for the Rialto (U12) Girls Allstar team Saturday afternoon as they fell to Charter Oak 43 .Charter Oak came out swinging, scoring three runs on 1 hit, 1 walk and 3 errors after sending only five batters to the plate. Rialto called time out and made a pitching change along with some other key substitutions and order was quickly restored. They came back to score two runs in their half of the first inning on a triple by Pamala Baber. She knocked in Gabriella Gomez and Bella Robles who walked and singled respectively. After a shaky start, Charter Oak pitcher B. Sierra settled down and pitched a marvelous game allowing 3 runs, 8 hits, 2 walks, while striking out 7 batters. She also went 1 for3, ripping a run scoring double in the first inning and scored a run. Her teammates gave her great support on defense committing only two errors. However, one of those mistakes allowed the tying run to score in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, B. Fraijo singled and came around to score on two Rialto miscues to provide what would ultimately be the game winning run for Charter Oak. Rialto had one last shot in their half of the fifth inning. With two outs, Priscilla Solis was thrown out attempting to go from first base to third on a single by Aija Winn, who additionally, had a double and scored a run in the game. With the victory Charter Oak advanced to the championship round where they will face Claremont later in the day. Lineup Change, Changes Rialto’s Fortune Photography By Vanessa Hernandez By Christie Acevedo Research has shown that an alarming amount of American’s have a vitamin D deficiency. A vitamin D deficiency would not be such a problem if vitamin D was not completely necessary in having a longer life by preventing disease, preventing infection, building stronger bones and muscles, maintaining blood sugar levels, prevents high blood pressure and preventing infections. Vitamin D can also help prevent many autoimmune diseases like, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and multiple sclerosis. Some of the top food sources of vitamin D are fish, Soy Milk, orange juice, ready to eat (cold) cereal, maltomeal and milk. Milk alone is likely not a good source of you daily vitamin D intake. A daily dose of 10002000 IU has been said to help prevent disease and lower mortality rate by about 7%. The summer sun at noon for about 30 minute, full body exposure will provide about 20,000 IU of vitamin D, a darker skinned person will get about half as much. Although, the sun is an excellent source of vitamin D there are many downfalls such as premature aging and skin cancer that you need to take into consideration. Another good source of vitamin D is supplements. Most American diets do not provide enough vitamin D so in cases like that supplements are important. The groups that have an increased risk of a vitamin D deficiency are dark complected individuals, the obese, the elderly and those who avoid the sun. With all the research done the benefits of vitamin D are very promising and it is worth the effort to get the proper daily recommendations. By Jim HaugeWiki Leaks is every government’snightmare. Never in the history of theUSA has there been such a threatgreater than the release of so muchinformation that this might be theturning point of the American empire. The threat of terrorism by Al Qaeda, while great, is no match than thethreat of file sharing of confidentialinformation.Wikileaks.org is a website thatdiscloses confidential government filesfrom various cables (such as the ‘U.S.Department of Defense ‘) that are vitalto the integrity of the US. Yetsomehow they were obtained, uploaded, and then swarmed aroundthe world like a virus. How did this happen?I doubt the US ever saw it coming.Which leads one to wonder if oldminds are running the show inWashington DC. While I don’t

condone the release and distributionof Top Secret government files thatendanger Americans, how could thegovernment not secure these filesfrom the Internet? File sharing is notnew. We had Napster in the 1990s thatdevastated the once powerful musicindustry. Because of Napster, recordcompanies have fallen from grace andmusic artists are left to fend forthemselves.Digital versions of movies and TVshows have been distributed onlinebefore a scheduled release. Iremember back in 1999, when theworld was eagerly waiting for therelease of Star Wars: The PhantomMenace. The digitized version of themovie was circulated online before itsscheduled release at local theaters. So what about document files? TheAmerican government should havelearned from the music and filmindustries when files were shared as

far back as the mid1990s. Todaycomputers, servers, and bandwidthhave grown stronger, faster, and moreavailable then ever before. In order forsomeone to steal documentselectronically the documentsthemselves had to have been stored ona server….unsecured! What weresensitive and top secret documentsdoing in a server connected to theInternet?By 2007 Wiki Leaks has amassedover 1.2 million documents from‘various’ sources. Perhaps thesesources were disgruntled governmentemployees or news groups. Wiki Leaksis being held liable not for obtainingthese documents, but making themavailable for the world to see. Untilnow, leaking documents was notalways considered a crime. In fact, itwas heroic. Without leaks we wouldnot hear about the atrocities aroundthe world especially in nations with

controlled press. Wiki Leak founder,Julian Assange, is a hero in Kenya forreporting about secret police killingsof private citizens. He was awardedthe Amnesty International UK MediaAward for this work known as,“Kenya: The Cry of Blood – ExtraJudicial Killings and Disappearances.”Russia went as far as recommendingAssange for the noble peace prize forleaking sensitive documents from theUS Department of Defense. However, Assange and crewattacked the US, a nation that mustjustify the logic behind threeunpopular military engagements(Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan) andon the verge of the fourth (NorthKorea). Some of the contents disclosedwithin these documents show thatarrogance and greed served a biggerpurpose behind the wars than security. It also showed disrespect by USpoliticians for making disparaging

remarks about foreign politicians fromnations they consider allies. This is unfortunate since the US hasto rebuild its reputation as a peaceloving nation protecting it’s very allieswho’s leaders they are disparaging.Assange is a villain to the Americangovernment, but a hero to millionsworldwide. There are millionsworldwide who would love to seeAmerica’s downfall from worldprominence. While the US has shutdown the Wiki leaks website (fornow), it will be challenged to preventfiles from traveling through variousservers and into countless number ofcomputers worldwide. To say thesefiles are in the wrong hands is a grossunderstatement. As are the wars it isfighting and terrorist attacks it hasendured, the Wikileaks disaster couldhave been prevented.

By Ethel MartinMillerWell, It’s time to look back and seewhat we have accomplished since thefirst of the year. What, if anything, did we decide we were going to startdoing or stop doing? The first of theyear is a time when we hope to makechanges in our lives, hopeful to do itdifferently than last year. I talk tomany people and they all say thesame thing. “Where has the timegone, time is flying,I can’t believe it,this week, month is already gone”.The young and the old all feel and saythe same thing about time. Well, it’snot too late to start over if wedropped the ball. Let’s pick it up andstart over.I went on the Internet to look upthe definition of time. Wow, therewere all kinds of meanings for time. Some I understood and some I didn’t.Time is involved in many things, but Icame up with my own thoughts ofwhat time is and what we should dowith it. Time is too precious to let itslip away.We need to slow time down, starttaking time out to relax, and find aplace that is still and quiet. Take timeto sit and have breakfast or dinnerwith our families. Turn the televisionand music off and take time to visitand communicate with our family

members. Say these words, “I loveyou,” to your spouse, your children, and your friends. I am sure it will beright on time. We all need to hearthose words; there is special power inthem. Take time to help someone inneed. Take time to greet others inpublic places a smile, hello, or howare you doing would be nice. Takethe time when driving to let a carease in front of you. Rushing to gofirst is rushing your time by. Oh, andtake the time to slow down and stopat a yellow light don’t speed up.Slowing down and stopping at ayellow light can save lives. Usingtime just to rush in every direction isnot a good thing. Take time to listento someone else’s opinion in aconversation before cutting them offto give your opinion. We need to taketime to develop better listening skills.Oh yea, le’ts take time to preparehealthy meals for ourselves andfamily members before rushing out tofastfoods. Health plays a big picturein this time of our lives. If we need something to do for therest of this year, we can focus ontime. Take the time to think aboutsomething you might want toaccomplish and know that it is nevertoo late to get started. Time is soprecious to just let it slip by.

A lot of people are wondering if thereis some kind of trick to findingemployment in today’s sluggish jobmarket. Many wonder how someonewith far less skills than themselves hadno problem finding employment whileyour skills their skills just go unusedwhile still looking for work. There is notreally a trick but there are many stepsyou can take in order to better yourchances in achieving your goal infinding employment.Networking is important, it is notwise to hide the fact that you are lookingfor work. It is understandable that someare embarrassed or hesitant to announcetheir recent job loss but unless youspeak up no one will know and no onecan help. Many companies rely soley onreferrals for their new hires. Tellfriends, family and even neighbors thatyou are looking for work and ask if theyknow of any jobs available where theywork. If there is a job available ask themfor a referral and take what you can get. There may be plenty of room for growthbut the main part is getting your foot is

in the door.If you find yourself with the problemof the gap between employers gettingtoo large or you need more experiencevolunteering may be the way to go. Ifyou find an organization that worksdoing something that you are passionateabout it will help the organization, willmake you feel good and will give you thejob skills or employment history youneed. Many organizations eventuallyhire their volunteers for a paid positionsso prove yourself and offer assistanceusing the skills you have.It is apparent that many people donot find a job because they are too busysitting on the couch complaining thatthey can not find a job. Sure, many havelooked and many have had numerousturn downs but turn downs areinevitable as long as you are looking.Keep a positive attitude toward the turndowns and keep looking until youachieve your goal of finding a job. If youcontinue to apply for employmentchances are you’ll find a job.

We are in need of canned goods and nonperishable items

Seeking employment can be adaunting task but to make themost of your interviews thereare some important things youmust know. Being prepared foryour interview will give you anedge among others who showedup not prepared. Knowing whatto expect can give you thefoundation for making a greatimpression and getting the job.Learning about theorganization or company youare interviewing with is veryimportant. It is impressive tointerviewers when you have anidea what type of job your areapplying for and that you tookthe time to learn about who theyare. When spoken to by theinterviewer listen so when it isyour turn you could match yourskills to what the company is

looking for. You are sellingyourself so you need to presentyourself as exactly what they arelooking for to benefit theircompany.Be ready to speak about yourlast place of employment Somethings to be ready to speakabout is how you got along withothers on the job, what you didfor the company, how the skillsyou got with that company canhelp the company and mostimportantly why you left. Theymay ask if you liked the job, ifyou did not never talk bad aboutthe past job, simply let themknow it may have not been thebest match for you. Speakslowly, clearly andprofessionally, if you areprepared this will be simple.Clothing, hairstyle and make

up (if you are a woman) all arevery important to the firstimpression that you will give.Make sure to dress inappropriate attire like a nice suitor shirt and slacks. Your hairshould be in a simple hairstylethat does not attractinappropriate attention. Do notwear strong cologne or perfume, not everyone has the same tastein fragrances. Never let theemployer see you smoking orchewing gum and do not comein smelling like smoke. Firstimpression is not everything butit is important in building thegreat interview. When going to your interviewyou want to show up on time, itis best to plan to be there about30 minutes early in case there istraffic or any other delays. If

you arrive at the location earlydo not go in until about 510minutes before your interview.Stay calm, even if you are abasket case you do not wantthem to see that. Greet theinterviewer with a nice smileand a firm handshake. Keep eyecontact and do not answerquestions before they ask theentire question. Make sure toask questions about thecompany but do not askquestions that can easily befound on the company website, that would show that you didnot do your homework. When the interview is overmake sure to thank theinterviewer and shake hands. Itis a nice gesture to send a shortthank you note after theinterview. If you do not hear

back from the employer youmay want to follow up in acouple of days. Just say youwanted to thank them for thegreat interview, and tell themyou are just following up.A great interview is the mostcrucial part of finding the jobyou have been looking for. Somake sure you prepare bylearning about the company, knowing what you will besaying, selecting proper attireand calming down. Justprepare to present yourself in away that you look confident, like they are looking for you andyou are there to offer your help.Preparation is the key tosuccess with anything so beprepared and the job willfollow.

By Pastor John H. ClarkBut can you handle the truth?Have you ever skimmed over thedescription given to Moses ofhow the tabernacle was to bebuilt? Have you ever wonderedwhy so much detail was given tothe building? Do you know thesignificance of the tabernacle toIsrael, and to us today? In this months lesson we will dealvery briefly with the Tabernacleand it's significance to Israel andthe church, but in order tounderstand the purpose of theTabernacle we must go back tothe beginning. So God created man in his ownimage, in the image of Godcreated he him; male and femalecreated he them. Genesis 1:27And God blessed them, and Godsaid unto them, be fruitful, andmultiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and havedominion over the fish of the sea,and over the fowl of the air, andover every living thing thatmoveth upon the earth. Genesis1:28And the LORD God commandedthe man, saying, Of every tree ofthe garden thou mayest freelyeat: But of the tree of theknowledge of good and evil, thoushalt not eat of it: for in the daythat thou eatest thereof thoushalt surely die. Genesis 2:1617.Adam was created in the image ofGod which suggests he was not

intended to ever die, but when hedisobeyed God he immediatelydied spiritually, and began theprocess of physical death. Moreimportantly he allowed sin toenter the world and relinquishedhis authority to Satan whobecame the god of this world. (2Corinthians 4:4)Satan and his angels fell, whereas people die. The Bibledoes not say that we are fallen; itsays we are dead. The word deathin Scripture connotes separation. Our sins have separated us fromGod. But your iniquities haveseparated between you and yourGod, and your sins have hid hisface from you, that mutteredperverseness. Isaiah 59:2.Since sin separated man fromGod it was no longer possible forthe spirit of God to dwell in deadman. However, since God stilldesired to dwell in man, heinstructed Moses to erect theTabernacle so he would have adwelling place in the midst of hispeople.Since Jesus paid the price, andbecame the ultimate sacrificeGod is now able to dwell in man.Today our bodies are theTabernacle, or the place whereGod dwells. What? Know ye notthat your body is the Temple ofthe Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye arenot your own. II Corinthians 6:19The Tabernacle was designedby God and constructed under

the direction of Moses asrevealed to him by the Lord. Itwas God's sanctuary – God'sHoly Tent and His temporarydwelling place. Psalms 132:7 Theinstructions for building theTabernacle were carried outexactly as the Lord commandedMoses on Mount Sinai. Exodus25: 9. Throughout the Bible,God's reason for the Tabernaclewas restoration of man'sfellowship, lost due to Adam'sdisobedience, by means ofredemption. It was in the Gardenof Eden that our Creator was firstrejected, but throughoutScripture, God's heart cry hasbeen to dwell permanently withHis people. Exodus 25: 8bFor a holy and righteous God todwell with His people, the sin ofmankind and individual sin hadto be removed. The Tabernacleand its sacrifices point to thefuture redemptive sacrifice ofChrist on the cross, where thebarrier of sin was finally removedonce and for all. The Tabernaclewas a portable tent where theChildren of Israel, were enabledto come and worship Him. Themeeting place where thepresence of the God could dwellin the midst of His people. JohnH. The youth of today what’s going tobecome of them? And so begins thecriticisms and rants regarding themisdeeds of our young people. Theyare disrespectful, lazy, irresponsible, misguided, etc. All too often thesedisparaging comments refer to ourchildren of color. While there isevidence some of this negativism doesexist, there is too little focus placed onthe positives. There is an organizationwhich seeks to do just that. The Afro Academic, Cultural,Technological, and ScientificOlympics (ACTSO) is one suchorganization. Under the leadership ofthe NAACP, ACTSO highlights thetalents of African American highschool students from across the

country in twentysix categoriesincluding the sciences, humanities, business, performing and visual arts.It is a yearlong achievement programwhose goal is ‘to recruit, stimulate, encourage high academic and culturalachievement for high school students.’From February through April, localcompetitions are held. Those winnersproceed to the national competition. This year in July, Nationals will beheld in Los Angeles during the NAACPNational Convention. Two winners of the localcompetition reside in the InlandEmpire. Perri Scott is an upcomingsophomore at Rancho CucamongaHigh School and an active member ofAntioch Missionary Baptist Church inPomona. For her entry Perri wrote apoem titled “Black Woman” which

focuses on the lives and struggles ofBlack women. “Black women get a lotof negatives. I wanted to present thepositive side,” stated Perri when askedwhat inspired her to pen the poem.Additionally, she performed apersonal dramatic piece which delvedinto her relationship with her father. With so many activities and interests, why add more? Her goal is to becomea songwriter. “Writing poetry willhelp toward writing songs. Dramaticswill help me in future performances,”Perri explained. Extrinsically, Perrireceived two gold medals and a plaquefor her creative efforts. Intrinsically, she gained a lifelong reward a senseof self confidence. Her advice to otheryouths who may be reluctant to accepta similar challenge is, “Stay true toyourself. Don’t let fears hold you

back.” And now, it’s on to Nationals!Ian Peace, the second local winner,is a diverse student. Ian is anupcoming senior at Los Osos HighSchool in Rancho Cucamonga and anactive member of Antioch M.B.C. aswell. Ironically, his project was also inthe performing arts even though mathis his favorite subject. He wrote, edited, directed, filmed, casted, andperformed a montage in which themain character must overcomeobstacles placed in his way. Thetheme as defined by Ian: only you candefeat yourself. Whatever obstaclescome your way, you can overcome.Ian has an interest in playing tennisand basketball, but his goal is toattend USC or NYU with a major infilmmaking and a minor in businessfilmmaking which adds to his

diversity. When asked why heaccepted the ACTSO challenge Ianresponded, “This is a start toward mycareer in filmmaking.” He alsoreceived a gold medal and expects thesame victory at Nationals.Congratulations to thesecompetitors! Maybe others willbecome involved in ACTSO next yearand other organizations that highlightyouthful talent. Everybody can’t be anathlete but find positive avenues toshowcase your creativity. Follow thewisdom of Perri when she stated,“Success is more than sports forAfrican Americans.” Ian’s advice toall young people is pertinent to thesetimes: “Get on track for the future.”It’s never too early to startpreparations.

Can You Handle The Truth Series"And Ye Shall Know The Truth and The Truth Shall MakeYou Free John" JOHN 8:32

By Ethel MartinMillerWhat a wonderful interview with aprecious lady name Mattie (Casey)Pompey Moore, to whom many referas Mother Moore. She was born July27, 1911 the oldest of 10 children, 5girls and 5 boys. She married EmmettL. Pompey in October 1929, but he isnow deceased. In the fifties she wasthe assistant pastor at True HolinessTemple Church in Detroit, Michiganunder Pastor Hazel Bullock. MotherMoore worked at Grace Hospital as acook. The doctors in the hospitalcame to the kitchen to find out whowas frying that good chicken; none ofthem had tasted chicken like that. Some of the doctors came and got hername, and one of the doctors hiredher to cook chicken for him.A grand party has been planned atthe Double Tree Hotel Ontario forMother Moore’s 100th birthday thismonth. She is a blessed centenarian

and a precious jewel. Mother Moore’spicture was taken, and she was askedby us to hold up the picture of hergrandmother, Lou (Washington)Casey another precious jewel wholived to reach 124 years of life (1826 1951). She stood about 4 feet tall andhad 14 children. Mother Moore’sfather, Lewis Casey, lived to reach 117years of life. Her mother, CallieCasey, lived to be 99 years of life.Mother Moore’s parents were marriedfor 75 years, longer than GeneralMotors was a company. As I spoke with Mother Moore Iwas amazed at the wisdom that cameout of her heart, mind, and mouth.Mother Moore stated the food herfamily grew in the 1930’s kept themand their neighbors from goinghungry. They loved everyone. If herfamily had a piece of bread, theyshared it. She had my crew thinking, laughing, and in awe at what we werehearing. I would like to share some of

the wisdom and comments thatMother Moore shared with us.She stated the Lord has kept herhere all these years. Keeping the bellyclean, liquor and beer out of the bellyis what helps. She was so proud thatshe was able to vote for PresidentObama. Mother Moore never thoughtshe would live long enough to see aBlack president. A tip for her longmarriage was humor as well askindness. It kept the marriagetogether. Her advice for the youngladies: if a man comes to see you, askhim if he is looking for a wife becauseyou’re looking for a husband. If he’snot looking for a wife, tell him to keepon stepping. Her advice to the young men: itpays to do the right thing. You don’thave to be arrested and put behindbars. She wishes every preacher willpreach that message. She wants theparent to teach their children beforethey leave home and that all races

need to love one another.I could go on and on about MotherMoore, but I will leave you with thewords to a song that Mother Moorewrote. She sang the song on thestreets and when she would lookaround, there would be crowds ofpeople standing and listening to hersing. “You got to love one another ifyou want to see Jesus; you got to loveone another if you want to see the

Lord. You need a mind of thingsabove us. Jesus said, ‘ love ye oneanother.’ You got to do all thingsright if you want to see the Lord.” Shestated after singing she would startministering to all the people. Ourcrew all learned her song before weleft her home. I thank you Lord forMother Moore.

By Jane Mountain, MDHas someone told you that you havebipolar disorder or manicdepression? Haveyou been wondering what having bipolardisorder really means? This article will helpyou make sense out of what you or a lovedone is experiencing.Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder thatis neurobiologic. That is, bipolar disorder isa physical illness involving the brain. It isnot a character flaw or laziness. If you havebipolar disorder you are not purposelybeing “moody.” Nor can you “just snap outof it.” A person who has diabetes cannot“snap out” of having diabetes; neither canyou snap out of having bipolar disorder. However, having bipolar disorder doesnot mean that you can’t take steps towardrecovery from your illness. Many of youwith bipolar disorder are struggling withaccepting the fact that you have a realcondition that prevents your brain fromregulating mood properly. You may bereeling from the powerful effect thisdisorder has had on your life. But the moreyou learn about bipolar disorder, the moreinsight you can gain, and that will help youto better manage your illness.Bipolar literally means two poles, implying that in bipolar disorder there aretwo basic “poles” or extremes of moodHowever, thinking of bipolar disorder interms of two extremes of mood ismisleading. It is more accurate to think ofbipolar disorder as a wide range of moods. Our goal in the rest of this article will be toanswer these questions: What is mood? What is normal mood? What is depression? What are hypomania and mania? How can Imeet the challenges of bipolar disorder? What is mood ? Mood is a very strong word.It comes from older words meaning mind, spirit, courage, and to strive strongly, beenergetic. An even older word that moodcomes from means custom or customarybehavior. Thus mood means more thanfeeling happy or sad. Mood encompassesmuch of what we need to live. Mind, spirit, and courage, striving and energy, customand behavior—all are related to mood andour sense of wellbeing. Thus having bipolardisorder affects us in many ways, presenting challenges as well as abilitiessuch as enhanced creativity and sensitivityto the world around us. Many with bipolardisorder have influenced our lives andculture. These include Abraham Lincoln,Winston Churchill, Virginia Woolf, GeorgiaO’Keeffe, and Robert Schumann.Bipolar disorder is about more thanwhether we feel happy or sad at a particulartime. Bipolar disorder can be emotionallypainful and have a major impact on ourlives. At the same time it is a disorder that

involves all aspects of mood. In addition tothe challenges it presents, it also bestowsgifts of seeing the world differently fromothers whose moods remain in a normalrange. As mentioned already, thinking of bipolardisorder as being two extremes of mood ismisleading even though the term bipolarimplies only two poles of mood—depressionand mania. It is more accurate to think ofbipolar disorder as involving a wide rangeof moods. At its core is the brain’s inability toregulate mood. This inability to regulatemood within a normal range results invarying degrees of depression or mania. Attimes there may even be a mixed mood—astate that has elements of both depressionand mania. In bipolar disorder your moodtakes on a life of its own that is independentof what is happening in your life. Yourmood thus becomes independent of yourexperiences. This “disconnecting” of moodand experience presents challenges in dailylife. Sense of identity and selfconfidencecan be affected. Symptoms such as extremeirritability can affect relationships. Sadnessand hopelessness can becomeoverwhelming and even lead to suicide. Thesense of self can be lost by not knowingwhat to expect from your moods from dayto day or even from hour to hour or minuteto minute. What is normal mood? Beginning withnormal mood is important because it is thehardest mood to understand for a personwho is experiencing bipolar disorder. Mostpeople take for granted that they feel happyor content most of the time. Happiness orcontentment describes normal mood.Especially if you are experiencing bipolardepression, you may not realize that mostpeople feel happy most of the time. Mostpeople have a stable mood that doesn’t havewide swings. Instability of mood is thehallmark of bipolar disorder. Suchinstability makes it difficult to recognizenormal mood. Just as it may be difficult foryou to understand normal mood, thosearound you may have difficultyunderstanding depression, hypomania ormania. For instance many people withnormal mood will say that they are“depressed” when they are having a badday. This is better described as having a“blue mood,” which quickly passes. The difference between depression and ablue mood is that the blue mood may vary abit but it remains within a normal range.Blue mood does not stay at an extreme forvery long, but lifts after a short time. Alsothe ability to enjoy pleasurable activitiesremains. For example, if someone with

normal mood is having a lowmood, that person may decideto go to a movie with somefriends. This may be enjoyableand may even lift thatperson’s mood. Depressiondiffers in that it is much moreintense and lasts from weeksto months or even years.Going to a movie does nothelp the person who isdepressed to “snap out” ofdepression. In our example, adepressed person may not beable even to enjoy the movie. What is depression?Depression is an intenselysad mood that lasts for atleast two weeks. It may becharacterized by irritability(usually an anxiousirritability), and loss ofenjoyment. Take the aboveexample of going to themovies. If you areexperiencing depression youmay not be able to enjoy amovie or an outing with yourfriends. Sadness, irritabilityand loss of enjoyment areemotional features ofdepression.Depression also hascognitive features. Cognitivemeans thinking. In otherwords, thinking may beaffected by depression. Oftenconcentration and focus areimpaired. Concentration isbeing able to pay attention towhat you are doing so thatyou can complete thoughts ortasks. Focusing is keeping ontrack without forgetting whatyou are doing or being easilydistracted.A second cognitive featureof depression is that of a senseof worthlessness. This maytake many forms. Examplesare a belief that you cannot dothings right, a belief that youhave no friends, or a beliefthat you are a failure in life.Notice here that I am usingthe word belief to describethis cognitive feature. That isbecause a sense of worthlessness may havenothing whatsoever to do with the reality ofyour accomplishments, the number offriends you have or your success in life. Thecognitive feature of a sense of worthlessnesshas nothing to do with your actual selfworth but everything to do with thethinking that can accompany depression.Hopelessness is another cognitive featureof depression, which causes you to see theworld in an unrealistic way. The thinkingprocess of hopelessness makes sense toyou because your thinking process is notworking normally. If you feel like harmingyourself or others, you need to be in a safeplace. That place may be with others whocan monitor your behavior, but morelikely hospitalization may be needed untilthe extreme hopelessness passes. Whenyou are in the depths of hopelessness youneed to ask for help. This may meancalling your psychiatrist, your therapist,or a trusted person who cares about you.An alternative is to call a suicide hotline(1.800.SUICIDE) or to dial 911. Keep inyour purse or wallet a note that says, “Iam feeling suicidal. I need help.” Whenyou are not suicidal show it to a fewtrusted people and give them instructionsabout how to get help. You can use thenote when you feel suicidal but can’t askfor help. Our bodies are also affected bydepression. You may sleep too much ortoo little, yet always feel tired. You maylose your normal appetite or have toogreat an appetite. You may have aheadache, stomach ache or fatigue. Or youmay find yourself crying without beingable to stop. What are hypomania andmania?Hypomania is a word that confuses manypeople. Hypo means under andhypomania is a mood that is “undermania.” It is not as extreme as mania butlies somewhere between mania andnormal mood. Hypomania is a bit harderto recognize and often remains hidden.Mania is more easily recognized.Mania is an expansive mood just waitingto be seen by all. Because mania is oftenpleasurable, you may not want treatmentfor mania. Getting treatment may feel abit like giving up a good friend.Unfortunately, the mania’s friendshipbrings serious challenges into your lifethat can make it less manageable. Lifelongtreatment seeks to even out your moods sothat you can be happier and accomplishyour goals in life. Untreated mania willlead to instability and will greatly disrupt

your life. There are two kinds of bipolar disorder,Bipolar I and Bipolar II. Bipolar I ischaracterized by mania; bipolar II differs inthat it is characterized by hypomania. Bothinclude swings into depression, butdepression tends to be the dominant moodin bipolar II. In order to diagnose bipolardisorder, hypomania or mania must bepresent at some time and depression mustalso be present at another time.articleIn thediscussion that follows, mania will refer toboth hypomania and mania. We will continue by examining theemotional features of mania. Unstablemood is the hallmark of mania. Mania is anexercise of “catch as catch can” becauseyour mood shifts rapidly. For example, youmay have sudden bursts of energycontagious to everyone in the room. Youmay laugh loudly, tell jokes, and almostperform for those around you. But thismood is unstable and within a short timeyou may move on to a completely differentexperience of being unable to sit still. Thisrestlessness might cause you to walkquickly out of the room to begin a differentactivity.Another emotional feature of mania isthat of irritability. The irritability ofdepression has an anxious quality. In maniathe irritability is one of being easilyfrustrated. You may feel as though youcould crawl out of your skin. The irritabilityof mania is often mistaken for anger. Angerdiffers in that it targets a specific focus, while irritability is without a particularfocus. Anger’s target could be anotherperson’s actions, a circumstance or perhapsa perceived failure of yourself or others. When you experience the irritability ofmania you feel volatile and any little thingcan set you off. You are easily frustrated.Mania’s irritability often causes difficulty inrelationships, especially if others interpretyour irritability as anger.Mania also has cognitive or thinkingfeatures. One of these is grandiosity. Withgrandiose thinking, you may have ideas andplans so expansive and difficult that theyare impossible to accomplish. In mania, however, you are convinced they are wellwithin your capabilities. For example, youmay believe you can climb Mount Everesteven though you have never even seen amountain before. Other cognitive featuresof mania include poor judgment, disorganization and lack of impulse control. When you experience these features ofmania, you may have difficulties withrelationships, find yourself overwhelmed byclutter, or go on spending sprees. These

cognitive challenges can result in troublesat home, work or in your community. One feature of mania affecting the bodyis that of increased energy in spite ofdecreased sleep. You can go for days toweeks with little sleep or even no sleep andyet have high energy. (Compare this to theextreme fatigue often associated withdepression.) Mania’s high energy can resultin rapid speech or racing thoughts. Whenyou are having these features, you may notperceive them as “rapid” or “racing.”Instead it may seem that the rest of theworld has slowed down. Your thoughts canseem intrusive, taking off on topics otherthan those you want to address. You canfeel agitated and as though you cannot sitstill or stop moving. However, when maniais less extreme, you may become moreproductive than normal and mayaccomplish tasks in a more efficientmanner than other people who do not havebipolar disorder.Psychotic features may also occur such ashearing things that are not present orseeing things that are not there. If theselatter symptoms occur you need to call yourdoctor immediately or even call 911,especially if you feel that you are in dangerto yourself or others. If things get thissevere, others will often intervene becauseyou may not be able to recognize that youneed help. How can I meet the challenge of bipolardisorder? The core challenge in bipolardisorder is the brain’s inability to regulatemood. Understanding this is crucial inlearning to manage your illness. When yourbrain is not keeping your mood within anormal range, you are challenged to seektreatment. Medications and psychotherapy, sometimes called talk therapy, can helpyou. It is important to realize that the goalof treatment is not to take away yourpersonality and creativity. It is to helpregulate your moods so that yourpersonality and creativity shine through ina healthy, productive life. Becausetreatment works you will feel better and beable to accomplish your life goals. You can also find help through education inyour community and through bipolarrecovery groups. Bipolar disorder istreatable and you will feel better and bebetter able to accomplish your life goals ifyou seek treatment. Support from othershelps you learn how to manage thechallenges of bipolar disorder.

The Four Moods of Bipolar Disorder

Although gas prices have went downa small amount and seems to now besomewhat stable gas is still an majorexpense in most households. Manypeople commute to work and pay alarge portion of their paycheck just to

get there. Others just do city driving, which still can be hard on the alreadytight budget many of us live with. Wecan’t really do much about the gasprices but there are a few things youcould do to maximize your gas

mileage. The first thing is, that you shouldtry to keep your ride smooth with aslittle stopping and going as possible.City driving does use more gas mostlybecause of stop signs and stop lights,

it is not really the stopping that is theproblem but the acceleration after thestop. If you are stuck in traffic it isbest to try to slow down, bring yourcar to almost a slow roll leavingenough distance between you and the

car in front of you. If you can manageto keep this up you could save a goodamount of gas.The weight of your vehicle plays arole in how much gas your vehicleuses, so make sure to only bring onlywhat you need. If you have a bike orluggage rack on your vehicle it may bebest to remove it until you need to useit. If you have your trunk loaded withlots of “stuff” it is best to go through itand see what actually needs to goalong with you.The air conditioner is anotherculprit for poor fuel economy. The airconditioner uses about 10% more gasthan driving without it on. The worsttime to use the air conditioner is whenyou are going 40 miles per hour orless, so when you are city driving it isbest to just roll your windows down.Only use the air conditioner whennecessary or when driving over 40miles per hour. The reason for that isthat if you are driving 45 miles perhour with the windows down you useabout 10% more gas, which is thesame as with the air conditioner, at 55miles per hour you actually use about20% more gas.Keeping your car tuned up andmaintained will always help with gasmileage. Choosing the best gasstations is also very important. Arcois usually the best priced gas stationsas are special gas stations like theCostco gas station, Vons gas station,Ralph’s gas station or the Food 4 Lessgas stations. If we just watch what wedo we could stretch our gas budgetenough to let ourselves breath a littleeasier.

Saving Money WhileBeating The HeatBy Steve DowellBefore you sign up for a debtsettlement service, you wouldexpect that they will explainwhat the consequences anddrawbacks of the service are. Infact, this is not just anexpectation. The law requiresdebt settlement companieswho approach clients byphone, to disclose thesedrawbacks before signing upnew clients. Nonprofits aren'trequired to do so, even thoughthey should for the sake ofhonesty. As for those of youwho are looking into doing ityourselves, you should knowthat the same drawbacks arevalid whether or not you areusing a company. Debtsettlement cannot beguaranteed If you ever seeor hear a settlement companyclaiming guaranteed results, you should know that they aremost likely a scam. The processof a debt settlement is all aboutnegotiating with your creditors. Some of them will be happy toget even a portion of theirmoney back in order to cutlosses. Others may have acompany policy to not acceptsettlements in any situation. Insuch cases your efforts won't besuccessful regardless of howwell one can negotiate. Ingeneral, a debt can be settled ifyou've had bad paymenthistory or if the debt is not inthe statute of limitations.Otherwise, your chances ofsuccess are much lower. Badcredit after a settlementA settlement

does not remove a debt fromyour credit report. It will onlychange its status to "settled"which is still not a good record. Also, any late payments ofchargeoffs will continue to

stay on your report throughouttheir standard time limit. Mostrecords will remain for up to 7years but some can stay for asmany as 10 years. In somecases, people prefer to pay offthe entire amount they owe inreturn for the deletion of thebad record. This practice is not

exactly legal but it is verypopular among people withbad credit. Debt status"settled" After youcomplete the settlement

payment, the status of theaccount will be changed to"settled". This will show othercreditors that you did not payoff your debt in full forwhatever reason and will havea negative impact on yourcredit score. Such a record willstay on your report for seven

years, just as much as othernegative records do. It willhave a major impact on yourscore initially. As the accountages and you start addingpositive information to yourcredit report, you will be ableto repair your credit to itsprevious state. Debt settlementis a timely processIn order tosettle a debt you need to showyour creditors that you can'totherwise pay it off. Thatmeans having missed a fewpayments. If you just started tomiss payments, you wouldneed to wait until your accountbecomes seriously delinquentto be able to negotiate withyour creditors. Even if youalready have a bad paymenthistory, you still need to savethe money for a lump sumpayment which also takes time.As soon as you miss a paymentyou will start receiving callsfrom your creditors orcollectors which you need tododge until you are ready toexecute your plan. Taxes aftera settlement When youcancel debt, you are basicallytaking and keeping moneyfrom your creditors. Receivingmoney from anyone isconsidered income, so the IRSexpects you to include anycancelled debt over $600 onyour tax return. The onlyexception is if you can provethat you were delinquent at thetime of the settlement, whichmeans that your assets wereworth less than you debt.

Important Considerations About Debt Settlement

By: Lori KniffThis is the story how Toby met apoliceman. One day, my car was rearended at a very busy intersection nearmy home. The other driver was a veryyoung man, only sixteen years old. Hewas very sweet, and had genuine tearsfor fear he had hurt me. As a matter offact, he had reason to cry because hehad knocked me a full twocar lengths ahead, and his1971 VW Classic Rabbit, well, it would have to bepicked up in paper sacks! The back end of my nearlynew Honda laid in themiddle of the street, alsoin pitiful pieces. He hadno insurance.I was shaking andcrying when I called 911.I’m ashamed to say thatwhen they answered, Icould only tell them whereI was, but I had difficultytelling them my name. They asked me to spell it,and I couldn’t even say mydifficult name, let alonespell it. I think that’s whythey sent an ambulance. Ithen handed my cell to mynew friend so he could callhis mother. The ambulance gotthere first. They weregiving me oxygen anddoing the usual agenda when the lawarrived. I was all right, and I knew it bythis time, but the medics were makingsure and they asked me to stay where Iwas and let the law “do their job”. So Istayed where I was.The policeman was a tall, big man, with a ‘no nonsense’ kind of a face; allbusiness. He was the kind that youwould hoped to heaven would be onyour side. He asked me for my driver’slicense and proof of insurance. Istarted stammering, again, but

managed to tell him that they were inmy purse in the front seat of my car. Then I managed to tell him that I hadtwo dogs in there, and when I leftthem they were fairly calm, but Ididn’t know how they were now. Icouldn’t guarantee it. “How big arethey?” “Well, the fat one is 23 pounds, and will possible lick your hand, if heis not too upset. The other dog weighs

10 pounds, and is not friendly.”He snickered. I could hear himsnicker! As he turned away, he said,“No problem”. I then went back to thebusiness at hand, letting the law “dotheir job”. Soon after, the ambulancedriver tapped me on the shoulder andsaid, “Look over there!” He waspointing in the direction of my car.The officer had a very, very long stickin his hand and was trying to get mypurse out of the front seat. My littledog, Toby, was up on the back of the

seat, just waiting for him to make hisfatal move. Her little ears were laidback, her hackles were raised and shewas crouched ready to spring. Herteeth were bared and she was growlingso loud I could hear her as far away asI was sitting. My little spotted heathen hadwaited her whole life long for anopportunity like this! But thatwasn’t the only reason thepoliceman’s face was red. Hewas embarrassed. As people willdo, a crowd gathered to watchthis show, and they wereenjoying it immensely!! Theywere stopping to watch. Severalwere telling Toby, “Stick to yourguns, little dog!” Some wereasking the law if he was going toarrest her, and one man drivingby, hung out his car windowand shouted, “CALL FOR ABACK UP!”Soon after, the policemanwalked over to me and asked,“Lady, how much did you saythat dog weighs?” “She weighs10 pounds. Did she bite you?”“Yes she did, in two places!” Heshowed me his hand andforearm. It looked ugly! It reallydid. Of course, I told him howsorry I was, in all sincerity.“Has she had her shots?” I feltPANIC, but I told him the nameof our veterinarian, and that shehad just received all of hershots. Fortunately, that was thetruth, and she also had her twoyear license. Thank the Lord,we were legal. On our wayhome, I bought Toby a porkchop.A few days later, I received aletter in the mail from theCounty Health Department, informing me that they hadchecked Toby for a previousrecord and had found her‘clean’. At the bottom of the

page, someone had drawn a smileyface and had written, “Have a niceday”. I was so relieved. I bought Tobyanother pork chop. I’m getting old,and Toby is getting old too. I havevisions in my mind of Toby and megrowing old together, with me going

on welfare trying to keep Toby in porkchops. I see her growling at everysquad car she sees. I know she willnever forget THAT policeman. But sheand I will be very happy together, Idon’t have a doubt.

(Fontana, California) BLUEducational Foundation’s CollegeExodus Project (CEP) is pleased toannounce the recipients of more than$100,000 in renewable scholarships. The awards were presented to 17students graduating this summer fromhigh schools in Southern California’sInland Empire (Riverside and SanBernardino Counties). The studentsare preparing to enter colleges anduniversities this fall. Thescholarships are made possible by agrant from the College AccessFoundation, a national leader in thefight to ensure that deservingstudents with financial need are ableto attend college. This is the secondconsecutive year that more than$100,000 in scholarships have beenawarded from the College ExodusProject. The awards cover tuition andfees for local students attendingcolleges and universities across thenation.“We’re dedicated to preparingstudents to enter college and tosuccessfully complete theireducation,” said Dina Walker,President and CEO of BLUEducational Foundation (BLU). “Ourhighest mission is to ensure thatstudents actually graduate fromcollege,” added Walker. The College Exodus Project assistsstudents in obtaining undergraduateor graduate degrees from accreditedcolleges and universities, with theintent that they contribute to the localeconomy through employment, internships and/or volunteer service. The program provides comprehensivecollege information, assistance and

support to help students withadmissions, financial aid, retentionand graduation from public andprivate institutions throughout thecountry. The program was created out of aneed to increase the number of Inland

Empire students graduating fromcollege. While the area has low collegegoing rates across all demographics,African American and Latino malestudents are a strategic focus of theCollege Exodus Project.According to the CaliforniaPostsecondary EducationCommission, in 2008 only 2.9% ofAfrican American and 3.1% of Latinomale high school graduates in thestate enrolled in the University ofCalifornia system. These percentageswere the lowest of any majordemographic group in California.

“Our project team is ever mindful ofthe college retention rates amongAfrican American and Latino males,”said Dr. Daniel E. Walker, a researchassociate at the University of SouthernCalifornia and Board Chair at BLU.“We have a strategic plan to reach all

students. It’s critical however that wehave a plan to reach our black andbrown young men,” explained Dr.Walker who cites the experience ofJamal Williams, a College ExodusProject participant and former fostercare youth from San Bernardino. Before enrolling in the CollegeExodus Project, Williams believed thata college education was unattainable.“During my senior year I was reallyworried about the next phase in mylife. Then I got involved with thepeople at BLU and the College ExodusProject. They really made me believe

that I could make it in college,” hesaid. BLU Educational Foundation Awards More Than $100,000In Scholarships To California Students

By Mary SmithThe sound of school bells ringing andchildren walking home always take meback to another time when my liferevolved around reading writing andstudying. School dances, football gamesand old flames all played an integralpart of my high school experience. Nowthat I’m older, those memories come tolife for me whenever I reunite with oldfriends from the past.Class reunions have a way of doingthat. Walk into any class reunion andyou will see just what I’m talking about.Oh, and don’t let this event take place atthe school that you graduated from.Once you walk on the grounds, you’resuddenly transported back to 19_____.It’s as if you never left. The same dustysmell of the hallways, locker number105, that same clock that just couldn’tkeep the right time, and old Ms.Cummings who was probably therewhen the school was built, still remain.Ah the memories. Friday night dances, the music of The Temptations, Earth,Wind and Fire, and so many moreplayed on countless stereos during the60’s and 70’s.War was in full swing yet it seemedlike if would never touch our youth orour spirits. That only happened whennews of a classmate dying in the warbrought us back. I love class reunionsbecause it gives you the chance to seehow most of the members of yourgraduating class have faired. Those youliked as well as those you loathed.

While we basked in the glow of daysgone by, every year a reunion takesplace, we are reminded of just how farwe have come. For some mothernature has been kind. For others, shehas left her mark to remind us that wehave past that phase of our life when theinnocence of youth ruled. Time whichwas on our side has now become anenemy. We’re all a lot older, fatter and a lotgreyer on top. Once we were daring andwilling to try anything. Now we treadwith caution. Once we hated theestablishment. Now we are theestablishment. Still as we gathertogether and admire each other like anold winter coat that we still love, wereminisce of that first dance, or thatfirst kiss. All it takes is for some song foryesteryear to come on, over the speakersand suddenly we are 16 again. When we see an old class mate whowas voted best looking walk in with areceding hair line and a pot belly, wesecretly feel a little bit better aboutourselves. Why, because we know thatwe are not the only ones who have todeal with getting older. And that makesit ok.It seems like only yesterday I was ascared 14 year old girl about to ventureinto another phase of my life. Like somany of the young people that I havetaught in the past, I took for grantedhow quickly those years would go.Fleeting are the moments that we spendhere on eart
