Jo, The Ed
Well another eventful month coming up with bothCastle Douglas Civic Week and KirkcudbrightSummer Festivities / Art & Craft Trail. Once again Iam going to have to start blocking out parts of mysocial diary.
I managed to get to both the Food Town Day and acouple of Spring Fling Galleries. It was tolerableweather but a really good turn out from where I wasstanding, but the events were, as always, worthturning out for whatever the weather. Hope to get afew photos in next month’s issue.
I would like to thank Caroline Robertson from theStewartry Agricultural Show, Calum Murray from theRed Kite Trail, and Becky Jones from the RSPBMersehead for their help and support. And I hopethat The Stewartry Link is able to do likewise, and iflocal businesses can lend the magazine theirpatronage I will be able to continue to support morelocal initiatives, projects and charities for the good ofour community.

The Deli, which opened mid April, has now almost doubled the size of The Ark andthe whole extension has made the place a lovely airy place to mill around all thosepretty little gifts and souvenirs. Denise Yates, proprietor, prides herself on the localproduce now supplying the Deli. She has sourced artisan bread from a Lockerbiebaker, the pies and biscuits are made in Dalbeattie, there are Loch Arthur cheesesand she has specially made Jams and Chutneys.
However in addition to the mouth-watering display behind the Deli counter Denisehas thought up some fun picnic ideas with something for everyone.
I couldn’t resist trying Denise’s “Kippford Seaside Special” while I was in visitingher. It consisted of ‘Local Hot Smoked Salmon’ with a Lemon & Dill sauce and greensalad on an Italian olive oil & herb roll - £2.65 Bit more tasty than my normal tunasarni that I would pack for a picnic I can tell you.
On top of all of this The Ark is also soon to launch a web-site making theirwonderful gift selection available all year round.

Unfortunately the day we arrived theweather was absolutely foul, whichwhen dining at NTS Garden’s cafemeans potentially you are missing themain thing you are hoping to see.
However this is mainly about the food and immediate environment rather than the wholeof the visitor’s attraction so that is what we concentrated on.The car park was roomy although not the most even. We dashed through the rain intothe eye-catching, glass-walled octagonal entrance seeing a well stocked shop to theright and a large hall to the left. Following the familiar noise of a cafe we walked past thesmall exhibition in the hall to the brightly lit cafe which had a glass wall overlooking thefirst section of the gardens. The large hall and the cafe had a mobile separating wall and knowing that ThreaveGardens also advertises itself as a wedding venue you could see how it easily becomesa nice size to house a wedding party plus entertainment. We headed up to the self service area to see what was on offer. The menu was not thatextensive, but adequate for quality cafe. There were 3 main courses, 2 soups, and theusual choice of fillings for baked potatoes, paninis and toasties etc. My sister and I bothchose a panini (Mozzarella + Haggis, Goats Cheese + Homemade Chutney) and mymum chose the Parsnip & Apple soup. I thought this item showed there was a bit ofinspiration going on in the kitchen, although for those not quite as adventurous therewas the safer option of Tomato and Carrot. Unless I was missing something from tastingthe main courses the lunch selection was not as inspired as the soup, but more thanadequate for a quick lunch. We picked up our teas and coffees, paid and found a table in the comfortably busysitting area. There was a full coach load of visitors in the cafe which were easilyaccommodated in the spacious area amongst a few other small parties. It really is quiteroomy with a nice mix of traditional and contemporary. It wasn’t long before the food wasbrought to our table. I was looking forward to trying out Mum’s soup, I was worried itmight have been too sweet for a lunch, but there was just enough flavour to taste the

apple without the sweetness that often comes with cookedapples. It was surprisingly tasty, even for me despite notbeing a fan of stewed or cooked apples. We then thought we should really try the sweets. Mum’son a diet so it was just Sis & I, we went for a ‘Lime Kiss’and a ‘Citrus Poppy Seed Cake’. The Lime Kiss was acitrus fondant sandwiched between two sponge-likebiscuits, sister’s cake was quite moist with a hint of lemonin the icing. Both were quite pleasant but was not quite inthe ‘to die for’ category. On the whole it has a pleasant environment, a bright andspacious area with a lovely glass wall to look out on thegarden as well as easy parking and an obviously amazinggarden to explore. The food is pleasantly tasty for a quicklunch and would be a handy place to have a businesslunch due to the parking but I was somehow expectingmore from the food, perhaps I had too high an expectationto begin with. I am quick to say however that we had nocomplaints what so ever… except for the weather.

See over leaf for our panel of Natural Therapists, all practicing locally

whether herbs, meditation, exercise, acupuncture, remove blockages in our energy systemsthat prevent the body from naturally healing itself, as do homeopathic and flower remediesand Reiki Healing.
Try using these 5 E’s, one for each finger, to maintain your health and happiness.
Eat right, only highly nutritious food, what you need so your energies remain free flowing, ensuring your body can perform its many complex tasks with ease. Check for foodintolerances. Eat a great variety of vegetables and fruit. They are the anti-oxidants; carotene, lycopene, lutein, their colour a useful guide, needed to mop up the aging free radicals that ourbodies are constantly bombarded with. They are the alkaline–forming foods that our bloodneeds to balance the many acid-forming foods we eat.
Eat raw as often as possible. Essential enzymes are destroyed during cooking. Include atleast one salad meal a day, with fruit, nuts and vegetable sticks between meals. Obtain mostof your fluids this way, and top up with water and herb teas between meals. Grow your ownsalad leaves and sprout seeds.
Eat less. Most of us in the West eat more than we need, overburdening our digestive system, ageing us, making us physically and mentally tired and unable to function optimally. Checkportion sizes. Go for quality not quantity. We need to experiment and challenge our habitualand conditioned way of eating. If sugar cravings are a problem use a chromium supplement.
Exist in the present. Don’t shoulder the burdens of regret and guilt from the past. Theydeplete our energies, cause illness and prevent us from enjoying the present. Learn from pastmistakes and try to move on. Forgive and forget. Choose to only remember the good times. You’ll be more focused and able to cope with life’s challenges. Plan for the future but don’t livefor it. Hope for the best and free yourself from your anxieties. Don’t keep longing for what youdon’t have, be grateful and appreciate what you have. If needed, seek therapeutic help, asdescribed above.
Energise! Shake off the negativity. Choose to be happy by being purposeful and creative. Goout, help others, exercise, and appreciate nature. Choose absorbing activities that inspire anduplift you, releasing endorphins and providing a sense of achievement. Don’t be toodependent on material things or other people. Be happy with yourself, as we’re meant to be,and then share this happiness with others.
So start each day, the 5 E-asy way!

This historic image is taken from apost card held in the StewartryMuseum collection in Kirkcudbright, and shows Main Street Auchencairnas it was around 1903, when this postcard was sent. It’s quite a busy streetscene with the hotel brake or wagonette outside the Auchencairn Arms Hotel, nowthe Smugglers’ Arms. Further up the street, there is a milk-cart thought to be SamCallendar’s from Chapelyard and even further up a woman is drawing water fromthe fountain erected to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in1897.
Look out for more historic images like this from the archives of the AuchencairnHistory Society and the Stewartry Museum in the forthcoming AuchencairnCalendar for 2012, a joint project between the Auchencairn History Society andAuchencairn Village Shop.

Q- I have a family member who suffers from fibromyalgiathat is mainly in herback. Some days she feels fine but when she gets stressed and tired it flairs upquite bad, sometimes leaving her almost unable to walk. At one point pre-diagnosis the doctor suspected a broken back it was so bad. Any info andsuggestions on the condition and coping with it? It would seem to be morecommon than I thought as I now know of 3 other people suffering with it. - Anon,Dalbeattie
A- The term fibromyalgia is known as a diagnosis of exclusion, which basicallymeans 'we don't understand what it is, but we do know what it isn't' (e.g: it isn'tarthritis). Subsequently, those with fibromyalgia type difficulties may especiallybenefit from a holistic approach that seeks to address the underlying cause ofany problems for that person.
Warming circulatory stimulants like ginger or cardamom in your diet can help todeliver the blood directly to painful areas and clear away inflammatory debris.Traditional nerve tonics that also support the immune system (including wildoats, rosemary, ginseng or black cohosh) can help resilience, while useful pain-relieving herbs include meadowsweet or willow bark. Relaxation is important, and counselling or emotional/behavioural therapies can often be helpful inlearning how to pace yourself effectively.

I started my buisness Bottle Green Biking at the end of 2009. When Ifinished my Sports Degree at Strathclyde Universtiy I went travelingaround NZ, and thats when I really fell in love with mountain biking! When I came home I set up a coaching, guiding and holiday companyusing the 7stanes mountain biking trails in Dumfries and Galloway. Iwanted to try and inspire various groups to try mountain biking for thefirst time or improve the skills they already had, to allow them to get themost out of the sport. My customers ranage from families, schools, corporate groups, 1 to 1 tuition and groups of friends.
One problem that I found when I first had the idea was simply, how doyou start a business? I went along to the PSYBT and they helped mewith everything from creating a business plan, choosing a strongdirection to take things, helped me with a loan and provided me with agreat business advisor. PSYBT haven't only helped me start a businessthey are also helping me to grow it.If you are interested in finding more out about Bottle Green Biking thengo to www.bottlegreenbiking.co.uk
Blokarting was introduced to Dumfries and Galloway a year ago by 25yrold Carol-Ann Brown. As a keen outdoor enthusiast and water sports instructor , Carol-Ann sawa gap for this new and exciting Sport in Scotland so took the plunge andbecame self-employed, based herself on the beach and started F5- Ex-treme Beach Sports.Blokarting is a form of Land Yachting – a small 3 wheeled buggy poweredby a sail and controlled using handle bars and a rope. It was important toCarol-Ann to offer a sport that was user friendly and available to every-one as she believes that we should all have the chance to do sports in ourarea. This year as things start to expand for F5 – Powerkiting will be a new ac-tivity by the end of 2011; allowing customers to take powerkite lessonsbefore they head onto sports like kitesurfing, kiteboarding etc
Carol-Ann received financial support from PSYBT, D&G Council and RBSto set up and has since become a PSYBT Regional Ambassador, helpingother people aged 16-25 to set up in business. F5 has also reached the Re-gional Final for Business of the Year 2011 and is up against Ruth Asberyfrom Bottle Green Biking for this year’s title! The PSYBT is a charity who offer financial and business support to youngpeople starting out for themselves. Carol-Ann says “the support theygive you is invaluable – Ive met so many people and had lots of market-ing thanks to the PSYBT”.

Garden ViewJuly ~ Gone to Seed
26
Gardening is a hobby and, after a while, most people with hobbies findthemselves experimenting. They get a bit creative and want to see ifthey can do something on the cheap, or for free, or simply find to outwhether it’s possible to do something just for the simple pleasure of trying.
Seed collecting falls into this category for me. Most seeds are not particularly expensive to buy,so why would I or anyone else want to collect our own?
Well I can’t speak for anyone else, but I get a real buzz from collecting seed, knowing that I canperpetuate a favourite plant without any outside involvement. Sometimes I’ll collect seed with afair degree of certainty that I’ll be able to raise hundreds of little seedlings, and sometimes I do itfor the challenge, as not all seeds are easy to propagate.
If you want to have a go at seed collecting (and bewarned, it’s a highly addictive pastime) then hereare a few tips.
You will need:
Large paper bags - I had real problems locatingthese until I remembered eBay. I bought 100 largebags for around £3. Plastic bags won’t do as theyretain moisture and cause the seeds to developfungus or go mouldy.
Felt pen - for labelling. This is important as youwill forget what you’ve collected even if you thinkyou won’t!
Box or trug - for carrying the bags of seeds aroundthe garden.
Small pair of scissors or secateurs – for snipping the heads.
Choose a dry day with little or no wind. Select a healthy, pest anddisease-free plant with seedpods which look as though they’re aboutto split.
Label a paper bag (it’s much easier to do this first) then cut off theseedhead and turn it upside down into the bag.
Place the bag into a dry place and wait for the seeds to ripen. Checkregularly.
When most of the seedpods have opened, tip out the contents on to adry surface and separate all the seeds from any remaining bits of pod.
Store the clean seeds in a small, labelled paper bag or envelope, in acool dry place until ready to be used.
Easy seeds to collect and growNigella damascena (love-in-the-mist)
Aquilegia (ladies bonnets)Papaver (Poppy)
Digitalis Purpurea (Foxglove)Helianthus annuus (Sunflower)Cosmos bipinnatus (Cosmos)
Lunaria annua (Honesty)
You’ll soon discover many more.Happy collecting.

The Galloway Branch of the Embroiderers' Guildmeets in Castle Douglas (Parish Church, QueenStreet) on the second Tuesday of the month (exceptAugust.) The photo shows members working ontheir contribution to the art work which is tobe displayed at the Olympics next year: each Guild
branch has been allocated a country and asked to provide post-card sized embroideries based on thecountry's flag. Castle Douglas has been given the Democratic Republic of Congo, which canbe illustrated in any technique, using the colours of the flag, local designs or scenery. These will showthe wide variety of skills of the members, from cross-stitch to applique work, all of which techniquesare the kind of thing demonstrated in the talks the Guild has each month. In addition an extra group ofthe members meets to explore more advanced techniques (whoever heard of painting baby-wipes,using soldering irons and heat guns in embroidery?!) The main Guild members have exhibitions everytwo or three years and the 'Exploring Embroidery' group has had exhibitions annually, in the Mill onthe Fleet and CatStrand and in September will be having one in the Tolbooth, Kirkcudbright.
All those interested in needlework crafts are welcome, at whatever level of skills! Further details fromChairman Anne Ackerley (01556 670667) or Secretary Jane Logie (01556 660574)
