Working together, families and the Parish can assist the ill parishioner to seek both physical and spiritual healing. There are brochures on the Brochure Rack in Church about When to Call a Priest which can be helpful to you.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our mission as the Body of Christ in the parish of St. Jean Vianney is to model the love of Jesus by discerning and doing God’s will, consciously Sharing the Word and Eucharist at worship, educating in faith all ages, evangelizing our parishioners for Christ’s mission, and serving justly God’s people, our sisters and brothers within our parish boundaries, our larger Baton Rouge community, and into the world.

WHEN SOMEONE IS ILL,

WHEN DO I CALL A PRIEST????

The best answer is early in course of the illness. Contacting the Parish Office about a parishioner’s illness is an important first step. In this initial contact, a plan for the person’s pastoral needs can be created which may involve the Sacrament of the Anointing of the

Sick, including the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and/ or the weekly reception of Holy Communion from the Parish either on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. If an illness progresses, and the person is hospitalized, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick can be administered again for the person. Our Lady of the Lake Hospital has a Catholic Chaplain on Staff; however, the Baton Rouge General Hospital and Oschner Hospital do not. Calling the Parish Office to ask Fr. Tom to visit a sick parishioner in the Hospital is encouraged as some hospitals do not provide that information to the local parish. When a sick person from St. Jean Vianney Parish registers at a local hospital, please indicate in the registration that the person is from St. Jean Vianney Parish and inquire if Holy Communion is brought to the Catholic patients in the Hospital. Many hospitals provide this service through area parishes, including St. Jean Vianney Parish. It’s best to call for the Anointing of the Sick early in a person’s illness. The Anointing of the Sick is NOT the Sacrament of the Dying. The Sacrament of the Dying is really the Eucharist…Food for the Journey. If a person who is ill requires Hospice, either at home or at a Hospice facility, please let the parish know that the person is in Hospice care so that appropriate pastoral care can be provided for the sick person and family. Working together, families and the Parish can assist the ill parishioner to seek both physical and spiritual healing. We extend our sympathy to the following parishioners who recently lost a loved one:

To Gabe and Mariangela Rincon and family on the death of his mother, Eva.

Andy and Mary Ann Sceroler on the death of her mother, Claudine Polito.

Dear Friends, I wrote the recent Bulletin cover on “When to call a priest if someone is ill?” as I wanted to make clear that communication about a person’s illness is never an intrusion or bother. Unless I know someone is ill, I cannot offer them pastoral care. Please don’t depend on the hospitals communicating this information to me or the parish. Most of the hospitals in town do not take the initiative to inform the parish if a parishioner is ill. Yes, most hospitals do provide lists of Catholic patients, and sometimes these are broken into parishes; however, I am not always aware that a parishioner is ill or hospitalized. What does pastoral care mean? It means that from early on in a parishioner’s illness, there is the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. This can also include the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Anointing of the Sick is a special prayer including the Anointing with the Oil of The Sick. This Oil is one of the Oils blessed by Bishop Muench at the Chrism Mass during Holy Week each year. This Sacramental anointing is for the healing of the person, body, mind and spirit. It is an occasion of the Church offering care and consolation to the one who is ill in the name of the parish and the Church in the world. While our parish offers this Sacramental Anointing in the communal form each month during mass on the first Wednesday, not every person who is ill can attend. So, if you would want this Anointing of the Sick for yourself or a loved one, let the Parish Office know and this can be done. The Sacrament of the Dying is Holy Communion, called when this is the occasion, Viaticum. A person who is near death can often receive Holy Communion. This is another special ministry of care from the Church parish. The spiritual arts are as important in the life of a person who is ill as are the medical arts. These can go hand in hand for the sake of healing. There are some brochures on the brochure rack in church that deal with When to call a priest….. at Home, At a Hospital, and While in Hospice….. Our parish recently said good bye to Mr. Mark Blanchard, who died in late June. Mark was a long time director of the Office of Stewardship and Development at the Diocese of Baton Rouge and a good friend of St. Jean Vianney Parish. Each year when we do our three fold stewardship programs they bear the touch of Mark Blanchard. The Diocese will miss Mark’s insights, good work and faithfulness. Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord…. The coming week the Community Life Commission

will be meeting to work on preliminary plans to create ways for us to gather for good memories as a parish. Also, the Adult Faith Formation Committee will meet. By the way, my tomatoes are finally turning red!!! Have a good week. Love,

A REFLECTION ON THIS WEEK’S GOSPEL Fifteenth Sunday Ordinary Time Gospel: Mark 6:7-13 Reflection: Brad Doyle One thing I’ve never been good at is packing for trips. I always find myself frantically running around the house, checking the weather, throwing articles of clothing into a bag, hoping not to forget something. And while, in this week’s gospel, Jesus says “take nothing for the journey,” he’s not exactly extolling the virtues of procrastinators. He’s speaking to us about reliance. It is human nature; the more we have, the less we are dependent on others. The same is true spiritually. In our everyday encounters when evangelizing people, we should rely completely on Him to provide what we will say, what we should do, and when we should do it. He should provide our spiritual packing list, for only he knows the storms in the lives of those we will encounter. If we take a step back and, in prayer, receive from the Lord exactly what needs to be said, we will be much more effective evangelizers. Do we pack our own worries and cares into our conversations with others? Or do we listen to their needs and bring them to Christ? What is some baggage that may be hindering my relationships and ability to evangelize affectively? “Lord, this week help me to…”

PARISH OFFICE SUMMER HOURS The Parish Office hours will be Monday - Friday 8:30am - 4:00pm. We are closed from 12 noon until 1:00pm for lunch.
