Ministry in Action...

PAGE 3 Decimotercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario O LORD, BE MY HELP

Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mystery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, “Why?” This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in to-day’s Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, “Why?” At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: “Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me; O LORD, be my helper.” Let us pray that our mourn-ing will one day be turned into dancing.

Question of the Week

First Reading — God did not make death, nor does God rejoice in the destruction of the living (Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24). Psalm — I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Psalm 30). Second Reading — Your abundance should supply the needs of the others (2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15). Gospel — Your faith has saved you (Mark 5:21-43 [21-24, 35b-43]). Question for Children: What does sharing with others bring happiness to you? Question for Adults: What is your personal response to St. Paul’s instruction to the Corinthians today? How will this change your personal habits with money and pos-sessions?

Monday: Am 2:6-10, 13-16; Ps 50:16bc-23; Mt 8:18-22 Tuesday: Eph 2:19-22; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Jn 10:24-29 Wednesday: Am 5:14-15, 21-24; Ps 50:7-13, 16bc-17; Mt 8:28-34 or, for Independence Day, any readings from the Mass “For the Country or a City,” nos. 882-886, or “For Peace and Justice,” nos. 887-891 Thursday: Am 7:10-17; Ps 19:8-11; Mt 9:1-8 Friday: Am 8:4-6, 9-12; Ps 119:2, 10, 20, 30, 40, 131; Mt 9:9-13 Saturday: Am 9:11-15; Ps 85:9ab, 10-14; Mt 9:14-17 Sunday: Ez 2:2-5; Ps 123:1-4; 2 Cor 12:7-10; Mk 6:1-6a

Pregunta de la Semana

Lecturas de la Semana

Primera lectura — Por envidia del diablo entró la muer-te en el mundo (Sabiduría 1:13-15; 2:23-24). Salmo — Te ensalzaré, Señor, porque me has librado (Salmo 30 [29]).

WHITE SPECIAL MASS PRAYER ENVELOPE

As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an inde-pendent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the “Military Vicariate.” In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the “Archdiocese for Military Services, USA.” Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Ro-man Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in 1825. He was assigned as a “schoolmaster,” but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-Catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant ser-vices. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the “Nuns of the Battlefield” (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese. —Rev. HEALING MASS Fr. Steephen Viblanc, OSM, Monday, July 16, 2018

At 7:30 pm , St. Linus Church Fr. Steephen was born in India to a prayerful fam-ily. Immediately after his high school education, he en-tered the Servite Order or the Order of Friar Servants of Mary in 1997 and was ordained on April 22, 2009 also for that community. He was then appointed as a Voca-tion Director as well as both as an Associate Pastor and Pastor for a Servite parish while still in India. His community subsequently assigned him in California on July 2014 and was assigned at Divine Savior Catholic Church in Los Angeles for a period of six months. He was later assigned to Servite High School, an all male Roman Catholic College preparatory high school lo-cated in Anaheim as a Chaplain and Spiritual Director for the school. His main function is counseling the students and saying the everyday mass at the school, confession and retreats complementing the formation of each student to the person of Christ, drawing them to embrace Christ, love Christ, imitate, live and be Christ to others. Fr. Steephen is also helping out nearby parishes like St. Paul of the Cross, St. Philip's at Fullerton and St. Linus Church. He helps the Cursillo Movement in Anaheim for their weekly Wednesday masses. Father Steephen continues to find his relationship with the Lord increasing everyday in his love to serve God's peo-ple as a way of serving His master.

Safeguard the Children

DID YOU KNOW? Safety trumps good manners As parents/caregivers, we teach children to say “please” and “thank you,” to play nicely, and to respect other adults. It is also key to stress the importance of safety, and let chil-dren know that it is okay to be impolite if they feel threat-ened or scared. Children should know that it’s okay to say “NO” if someone is asking them to do something they don’t feel comfortable doing, and that setting boundaries by saying things like -- “Don’t touch me there,” or “I don’t like that” -- are not rude, but in fact necessary for their safety. For a copy of the complete VIRTUS® article “Exceptions for Children on Society’s Rules about Being ‘Polite’” visit http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

What does faith mean to you? The people whose sto-ries we hear in today’s Gospel had deep faith, and their faith led them to experience powerful encoun-ters with the healing love of Christ. Like the woman with the hemorrhage and Jairus, whose daughter had died, we ofen turn to God in times of crisis, relying on faith to see us through the darkness. As Saint Paul encouraged the people in Corinth in today’s second reading, we are also called to live differently as a result of our Christian faith. Like Jesus, we are to share the love, mercy, healing, and forgiveness of God with others.

First Holy Communion Pictures are ready for pick up. Please stop by the Religious Education office during busi-ness hours. Day time hours: Mon.-Sat. 9AM –2 PM Eve-ning hours: Mon.—Thurs. 4:30 PM –6:30 PM.

Amen Sunday is an opportunity for us to celebrate and highlight the progress of our Capital Campaign. It also gives us a chance to bring in our pledge and stand in soli-darity with our parish and the mission of our campaign. If you would like to bring in your campaign pledge enve-lopes or your checks towards your commitment it is very welcomed and appreciated. If you have not pledged we also welcome your monetary donations.

FAITH IS TO BELIEVE

Placing our faith and trust in God, whom we cannot see, is not always easy. We wonder why suffering exists and question the meaning of life and our purpose in the world. We wonder if God is really present during the most chal-lenging of life circumstances; we sometimes experience spiritual dryness, in which God seems distant or absent. At times, we may feel strong in faith, until a situation at home or work requires us to act as a person of faith, and suddenly faith is no longer easy, convenient, or comfort-able. These moments are so common that we speak of taking a “leap of faith,” when we act out of faith, even when the result of doing so is uncertain. Such a leap is often a turning point in our lives, as we find strength, healing and peace in turning our burdens and anxieties over to God in trust. Saint Augustine said, “Faith is to believe what you do not see. The result of this faith is to see what you believe.”

THE RESULT OF FAITH As we grow in faith, we come to believe that God is al-ways with us, through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit and the sacramental life of the Church, espe-cially the Eucharist. We are assured of God’s presence in quiet moments of prayer and experiences of the kindness, care, and compassion of others. We “see what we be-lieve” through all of these encounters with Christ’s love. These experiences lead us to praise and thank God for our many blessings, and to reach out to others so that, through us, they may also encounter Christ’s undying love. Through all of this, we grow in our willingness to share our many gifts with others, especially the faith that makes such a difference in our lives.

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Who’s More Generous?

Does the Christian duty to help the poor seem to be overwhelming? We hear more and more are out of work, more and more are homeless, and we see more and more pictures of starving children. Even in St. Paul’s time there was more than enough poverty to go around. He was trying to build interest (in our second reading) in a project to help the Christians in Jerusalem. We see two of his reasons here. First he tells what fine Christians they are, and hopes that they will be just as good in giving to his collection. (Reminds me of letters from the bishop, telling parishioners how good and generous they have been in the past.) But Paul isn’t just flattering the Corinthians; he is challenging them to continue to show their love for God in their support for fellow Chris-tians. The second reason was to show a good example: By helping the church in Jerusa-lem, they would show that Christians were united in faith and love for each other. He also doesn’t make a competition out of who could be most generous. He expects them to be more interested in love for each other than in outdoing each other. The main example he uses is Jesus, who made himself poor (i.e., human) so that we could be rich in grace and forgiveness. Paul challenges them, and us, to follow that exam-ple in giving from our wealth so that others can survive. Note that he doesn’t expect them to live in poverty, just to share what they have out of love for Christ. Perhaps they may need help themselves sometime, and could count on the other church to do the same for them. Today, we can ask ourselves, “Do I give to the poor because I feel guilty about all that I have? Or do I want to show my love for Jesus when I see him in the poor? Do I give be-cause I want the parish to look more generous than the neighboring parish, or to show that we are all united in concern for each other?” By looking at why we give to charities, we may find ourselves being even more generous than we expected.
