Pastor’s Ponderings by the Rev. Dr. Rex Stewart
Don’t forget to contact the Church O ce when a loved one is ill, injured,
or hospitalized.
Have you moved, changed your phone number, or your email
address? Please let us know so we can
update your records.
Dear Friends,
“Summertime, and the livin’ is easy. Fish are jumpin’…” My prayer for you all is that you will fi nd this season a time for recreation and renewal on God’s good earth. Carol and I will be away much of July as we travel to Alaska to spend time with our son, Robert, and his soon-to-be wife, Erica. In fact, I will be offi ciating at their wedding in late July in Fairbanks where they live.
Although quite a bit slows down here at the church during July and August, I hope you will make efforts to remember God and spend time worshipping with others wherever you may fi nd yourselves. Remember, we have only the one Sunday worship service at 10 a.m. during these two months (we return to two services after Labor Day). If you are traveling and worship with other congregations, let me see some of their worship bulletins. It’s okay for us to get good ideas from other churches!
One big change at our church is in our offi ce as we welcome our new Administrative Assistant, Emily Marra. Emily was the successful candidate in our month-long process of fi nding someone to replace Lori Russell, who left for another job better suited to her family’s needs. I thank Betty Salvatore and Michelle Allen for fi lling in at the offi ce while our search was on-going.
Emily Marra was raised in Newfane and now lives in Lewiston with her husband and three-month old child. She graduated from NCCC (Early Childhood Education), but found work in the fi nancial world working for area credit unions. Most recently, she has been the Executive Assistant for the CEO of the Niagara Regional Federal Credit Union. Emily has a warm and welcoming presence and I’m sure you will enjoy meeting and talking with her. Come by during the week and introduce yourselves to her! I know she would appreciate the help in getting to know all of us and putting faces with names.
Speaking of putting names and faces together, have you had your portrait taken yet for our new pictorial directory? It takes very little time and everyone who participates gets a free 8x10 and a copy of the directory. Of course, you can decide to buy portrait packages as well, but you don’t have to! The more of us who participate, the more useful the resulting directory will be to help our newer members (and staff, like Emily) learn who is who, and remind the rest of us whose memories aren’t the best! There are two more days of portrait sittings to choose from: August 1st and 2nd. Call Jessica Streb at 564-7929 or go to the link on our Weekly Update to choose a time online.
Well, that about does it for now. Keep the faith! Love God. Love neighbor. As the apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the Romans:
“Love your neighbor as yourself. Love does no wrong to a neighbor;
therefore, love is the fulfi lling of the law.” – (Romans 13:8-10)
Yours in Christ’s Love,
Rex T. Stewart, Pastor

PW HappeningsHappy Summer! It’s time
to sow, it’s time to savor the fi rst of the summer harvests; lettuces, peas, strawberries. How good is our God to provide for us so much bounty.July and August; those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer sounds good, but lazy? I don’t know about that part.
PW will have a Picnic and Gathering at my home, 4659 Lower River Road for any women of our congregation on Wednesday, July 25. We’ll have the 3 ‘F’s; fun, food and fellowship. Please bring a dish to share; think local, think salads, think something maybe you have been wanting to try. I enjoy being a guinea pig! Come at about 5 o’clock with your lawn chair.
Hear Ye! Hear Ye! PW and the Deacons will be honoring our octogenarians with an OVER 80 LUNCHEON, shared with our friends from the Lockport Presbyterian Home. It will be a simple meal, but delicious! Claudia Andres and Bill Siddall will lead us in a ‘sing-along’ and we’ll have a lovely afternoon. Save Monday August 13 for the Over 80 Luncheon. Gwen Kozar will be sending out information, and you must make a reservation. If transportation is an issue, we can make arrangements.
Also in August is the ever popular Janet Gunzelman’s CHILI SAUCE MAKING DAY! Last year it was the day of the solar
eclipse. It gave us something to do while the chili sauce was cooking. We’ll be needing 4-5 folks to help prep the ingredients; tomatoes, onions, peppers and celery, at about 9:30. It only takes an hour or so to prep. We jar the chili sauce at 2 PM, and need about 2 other people to help with that. We have a tentative date of August 27, but that is subject to change depending on a vacation with our now North Carolina family. Family wins out over chili sauce in the end.
Now, I must go and stand guard over my garden. I have the big 3 unwanted guests; deer, rabbits and now a groundhog. I might be purchasing my bounty instead of harvesting my own. Blessings to you!

We waited a LONG time for sunshine and warmth and it sure is upon us now! Praise God! Summer always brings another season of activity for Youth and Children’s Ministries. We have Mission Trips, Youth Conferences, a camping trip, and of course, VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL!! In my opinion, VBS is one of our church’s greatest missions, because EVERYONE can use their God-given gifts: from designing and building props, to art projects galore, fun music, drama, kitchen help, engaging with children, and let’s not forget clean-up! Plus, the program reaches over 100 community children each year! It is a beautiful outreach of God’s enormous love, and I encourage each of you to get involved, especially if you never have before! I look forward to seeing everyone during this time of long, sunny days. To everything there is a season, and ALL seasons belong to God! Blessings and love, Michelle

Hymn of the Month OUT OF THE DEPTHS I CRY TO YOU (Lutheran Hymnal)
In the Middle Ages, a heretic was a traitor to the church but the death penalty was seldom invoked before the 13th century. Since the Church was forbidden to shed blood, the State seized and put heretics to death, usually by burning. John Wycliffe (1320-1394), University of Oxford professor, theologian, priest -- and Bible trans-lator (oops), attracted a large following, which got crushed, He managed to die of natural causes (his bones were dug up later and violated.). Not so fortunate were John Huss, William Tyndale, and countless others. (See “Book of Martyrs.”) What enabled Martin Luther to succeed where others failed?
1. He was rescued from the early death of a monk who slept on the bare fl oor without blankets, self- fl agel-lated and denied himself food and water to a point almost beyond human endurance. His savior was Johann von Staupitz, in his role as vicar general of the Augustinian order, who ordained him priest and demanded that in ad-dition to tending his new fl ock, he serve as subprior of his monastery, lecture at the university, and study for his doctorate all at the same time, leaving him no time to engage in further self destruction. He became a dynamo.. 2. He was protected by Frederick the Wise, ruler of Saxony. The universal respect with which Frederick was regarded prevented the pope’s emissaries from seizing the annoying Luther inside its boundaries. This protec-tion came with great personal cost to Frederick. For example, as the owner of precious relics which he had purchased from all over the world, such as a few drops of the Virgin’s milk, a thorn certifi ed to have pierced his Savior’s brow, and some 19,000 other items, Frederick had the pope’s permission to display these on All Saints Day – visitors paid to view them and in turn, received indulgences for reduction of purgatory. Luther demanded the relics be packed away never to see the light of day. Frederick (who was not a wealthy man) com-plied, though he protested that this money met many expenses and improvements in and around Wittenberg and the university.
According to Phillip Schaff in his “History of the Christian Church” (8 vols) “The Reformation of the sixteenth century is, next to the introduction of Christianity, the greatest event in history. It marks the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of modern times. Starting from religion, it made Protestantism the chief propelling force in the history of modern civilization.”

For some time, the Deacons have maintained a closet containing a variety of “medical” implements. A great deal was accumulated, and the overage is being sold at the Rummage Sale.
However, many people don’t even know we have these items available, so we list them here…
- Crutches - Wheelchairs - Canes - Shower chairs - Walkers - A small wooden wheelchair ramp
- Bed pan- Arm rest/can assembly(if you need it you probably know what it looks like)- Strap allowing holding people safely in wheelchair- Bandages
DeaconsCorner
We always accept donations of more, upgrading and making sure they are always available.
If you need something, make sure Betty knows so we can stay on top of inventory. She has the closet key.
The Deacons and Fix-it Club will make sure all is in good order on a regular basis.
While started for our church community, we are glad to share with those in need, like we do with the Deacons’ Cupboard .
Please use!

This is a support group for people suffering from bereavement will be
offered at First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, 100 Church Street. The group will take a brief break and resume meeting August 2nd from 1:30 to 2:30 pm on Thursdays.
The group will be led by Sister Colleen Shanahan from Stella Niagara. Everything at the meetings will be confi dential. We believe that healing comes in these sessions through (1) verbally expressing your own version of grief and (2) the support you fi nd from others’ experience.
This is an ecumenical group, open to all people.

I want to thank all of our members who have continued the support the Building Fund thru the green envelopes. This has been invaluable in dealing with some Building and Ground issues. As you know we paid off the Mortgage early this year. The Busi-ness Committee and Finance Com-mittee agreed to continue to support the green envelopes, now calling them the building fund. The plan was to look at future items and, thru your support, complete these proj-ects as funding permits. It is inter-esting how things went from there. First we had a leak in the flat roof over the Kitchen. After a cou-ple of tries, we seem to have patched the Kitchen leak. This led to a con-versation with the contractor as to how we could move the standing water on the flat roof to the drains better. He suggested we add three crickets, (sealed tapered insulation) to help direct the water to the drains. This has been completed to the tune of $7,069.00.They also suggested we install a gutter along the south
side of the Fellowship Hall roof, done at a cost of $1,390.00. After that the storm came thru and we had a tree clean up at $1,800.00. We’re not done yet, the railing on the Kitchen stair case became a danger and it has been replaced with Vinyl over aluminum uprights and a cost of $2,969.00. All of this work was paid for out of the Church Building fund be-cause of your support. We do have a couple of more items on the list. We met with the Niagara county Sheriff and discussed some safety items he suggested we do and sometime in the future, we would like to update of the sound system in the Sanctu-ary. We are looking forward to your continued support and hope that you consider us good stewards of the support you show us.
