On behalf of the entire Northeastern University School of Law community, it is my pleasure to present to you our 2012 Report of Giving. It highlights the many contributions that enable our law school to excel and thrive. You have generously joined more than a thousand like-minded graduates, friends, foundations, firms and corporations in making a real difference in the lives of Northeastern law students and in expanding access to the school’s signature combination of classroom instruction and experiential learning. Thank you!

The 2012 fiscal year was another strong one for the School of Law. Donations totaling $2,248,221 were received in support of our Annual Fund, endowment and scholarship funds. Of particular note, support for the Annual Fund grew by an impressive 15%. These resources provide a critical boost to the school’s ability to offer financial aid, co-op stipends and other support to students. I would also like to pay special tribute to the 166 members of the Dean’s Society who made gifts of $1,000 or more last year. Membership in this group increased by 25% over fiscal 2011.

These displays of loyal support bear testimony to the continued vibrancy of NULaw’s approach to legal study. It’s an approach that is steeped in rigorous academics paired with real world experience. Ours was an innovative model in 1969, and still serves as an example nationally today. Never has it been more evident that we must ready our graduates to bring their skills to bear in a competitive and evolving professional marketplace. Although our model gives us an edge, we are constantly engaged in analyzing our results, keeping in touch with our graduates and assessing the effectiveness of a Northeastern legal education. We welcome hearing from you with ideas and suggestions.

The School of Law’s endowment comprises funds in seven general support areas:

student scholarship, co-op stipends, special purposes; faculty support and academic

programs; loan deferral and forgiveness programs; library and facilities support

and general unrestricted endowment. As of June 30, 2012 the market value of our

endowment stood at $12,955,814. This figure includes all endowed funds and

monetary assets held by the university that are permanently available for use by

the law school. It does not include funds held and managed externally by financial

fiduciaries that are irrevocably designated for the School of Law’s benefit.

The School of Law’s endowment generated $451,574 in expendable income

during fiscal year 2012 to support the general operation of the law school as well

as specific scholarships and programs. Support for student scholarships makes up

60% of the total endowment with a market value of $7,686,461.

Contributions to The School of Law’s endowment strengthen the permanent

capital of the school, establishing a base of income that provides revenue for our

operating expenses and special purposes in perpetuity. Endowed funds may be

established in support of any special area listed above with a minimum commitment

of $50,000. Gifts establishing endowed funds can be paid over a number of years and

named according to the donor’s wishes. Additionally, gifts of any size can be made

to existing endowed funds.

Founded in 1989, the Frank Palmer Speare Society honors alumni and friends who demonstrate their generosity and commitment to Northeastern

through an estate provision or other planned gift. Members of the Frank Palmer Speare Society qualify by making simple bequests to Northeastern,

naming the School of Law as a beneficiary of a living trust, life insurance policy, or a qualified retirement plan. Other ways to become a member

include establishing a charitable gift annuity, a charitable remainder trust or a charitable lead trust with the School of Law.
