INTRODUCTION

Between 1995-2004, there were 30,917 fatalities in accidents that involved 15-17 year olds. (a third of those death were teen drivers. The rest were the people hit by the driver)- AAA foundation traffic safety (nationwide)

Raising the driving age will just create more inexperienced drivers at 18 instead of 16.

WHAT DO YOU THINK THE MINIMUM AGE TO OBTAIN A DRIVERS LICENSE SHOULD BE AND WHY?

I think 17.- the roads would be much safer- holding off an extra year or two for practice would create less automobile crashes

New jersey is the only state with a 17 year old driving age- crash related deaths are lower than other states- they have tougher laws

HOW WOULD LIMITING THE AMOUNT OF PASSENGERS MAKE THE DRIVER MORE FOCUSED? “the driver will have fewer things to engage

in a conversation while driving”, says Soo Park

The driver would have fewer things to worry about, such as : - what to talk about next- trying to look cool

Page 5: Julien Lee presentation

WHAT ELSE CAN BE DONE SO THAT TEENS ARE MORE PREPARED FOR THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF DRIVING AN AUTOMOBILE?

More restricted driving time.- teens are getting more experience on the road- teens get more comfortable with the road-they know what to expect on the road

Stopping the use of phones while driving

WHY DO YOU THINK SO MANY TEENAGERS ARE GETTING INVOLVED WITH SERIOUS ACCIDENTS? They are too vulnerable to distractions

- adjusting the radio/CD/MP3 player 73%- eating 61%- cell phone 60%

They’re taking too many risks and they tell themselves nothing is going to happen.- they think they won’t get hurt 35%- it makes driving less boring 22%

Page 7: Julien Lee presentation

HOW DO YOU THINK THE PARENTS OF THE TEEN DRIVER CAN HELP PREVENT THESE ACCIDENTS FROM HAPPENING?

“constant reminder of the rules and continuing drivers’ education until 22.”, says Soo Park

Practice with their kids more often- more experience on the road- the parents can correct their driving mistakes.
