Dear Parents and Guardians

The parent teacher interviews were very well attended and the teachers have

appreciated having this opportunity to talk to parents about the goals and

challenges they have for their children.

The students enjoyed the presentations by Carla Reardon

from Manningham Crime Prevention who was accompanied

by Ian Morris from Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) last

Wednesday. Carla talked about police work and how they

help in the community. She answered lots of interesting

questions about her work.

Staff had a professional development from Tara Watson regarding the Active

Travel Program. A notice went out last week informing families about this

initiative. We will work with Manningham Council to create a safer school

environment through road safety education, increasing the

number of students walking and cycling to school and reducing

traffic congestion around the school. A survey will go out on

Friday March 23 to be returned the following week. Please

keep an eye out for this survey.

The school council Annual General Meeting will be on Monday 19 March at

7.00pm and this will be followed by the first School Council meeting with the new

council.

There is much excitement with Year 1 & 2 students, who are attending the swimming program at Aquarena. A very busy time!

Kind regards

Julie

This year I could only play in 4 tournaments and the finals.

The finals were held at Cheltenham Golf Club on Sunday, 4 March 2018. It was a

perfect day for a tournament with sun shining and little breeze blowing through.

The course is a good one with 18 holes ranging from par 3 to 5.

I was playing in the girls group of 8-9 years and it was a nine hole shortened

course with total par of 36. My group hit the 1st tee at 12 noon.

BANG! I hit my first shot of the tournament. I knew I was in for some surprises

along the way. Although I played the 5th hole badly due to my ball going into the

bunker. I had to lift my ball up after 10 attempts. Then I analysed where I went

wrong and put it at the back of my mind. Then came the big SURPRISE. On the

8th hole I did a Birdie. A birdie is when you complete the hole in 1 less than the par.

The distance was 187 meters with a par of 4 and I completed that in 3.Overall I

stood 4th with a total score of 56.

Finally the Result: The moment of Truth. “In the 4th place with

a lovely score of 56 off the stick from the girls 8-9 is Tanvi”, the

host exclaimed! Everyone started to clap for me. I could not

help but stifle a giggle as I walked my way to the front to claim

my prize. I got the 4th place medal and a Glass Trophy/ plate

for being in top 5 in the tournament.

TANVI - U.S. KID’S GOLF TOURNAMENT SUMMER LOCAL TOUR

On Wednesday, 7 March, Senior Constable Carla Reardon from the Manningham

Crime Prevention unit, came to Donburn to give an informative talk on safety to

the students. She explained what police do to help people. She also talked about

police equipment and the training you have to do to become a police officer.

Carla reminded us about how to be safe in the car and on the street.

She explained to us that you should be at least 145 cm to sit in the

front passenger seat of the car. Carla described all of her equipment

and explained when police officer used each piece of equipment.

Overall, we enjoyed listening to Carla speak and learnt some very

useful information.

Students at Donburn Primary School will again be able to enter the

competitions organised and run by the University of NSW’s Educational

Assessment Australia. The competitions are run in a scholarship type

environment with the year level tests being the same for all children

throughout Australia, New Zealand, Asia, India, South Africa, Hong Kong,

China and the Pacific region.

All students receive a certificate and an individual student report

indicating which questions they answered correctly and their score compared

with the rest of the students tested. The tests are an excellent preparation for

national tests and the student report is useful for highlighting your child’s

strengths and weaknesses.

The aim is to provide students with a worthwhile and challenging experience

which will create confidence and competence in the use of Digital

Technologies, Science, Mathematics and English.

These competitions will be held at Donburn Primary School on the following dates:

*International Competition and Assessment Digital Technologies: Tuesday, 8 May ($9.90)

*International Competition and Assessment Science: Tuesday, 29 May ($9.90)

*International Competition and Assessment Spelling: Wednesday, 13 June ($13.20)

*International Competition and Assessment Writing: Thursday 14 June ($19.80)

*International Competition and Assessment English: Tuesday, 31 July ($9.90)

*International Competition and Assessment Mathematics: Tuesday, 14 August ($9.90)

English and Mathematics Competitions.

LIBRARY NEWS

Andrea meets amazing Author Jane Godwin

and the wonderful illustrator and author Anna Walker

On Thursday 1 March I was lucky enough to attend a

brilliant professional development evening at Melbourne

Grammar School in South Yarra.

It is run by SLAV (School Library Association of Victoria) The event

showcased a variety of different Publishers. There were speakers from Allen

& Unwin, Ford Street Publishing, Wild Dog Books, Text Publishing, Black

Dog Books and Penguin Random House. It was exciting to hear about the

latest Fiction and Non-fiction books which we will be getting for the Donburn

Library in the near future.

I also got to chat and meet Jane Godwin and Anna Walker. I am a big fan of

these talented authors and illustrators. They have written many books for

children and you can see some of their popular books below. I got Jane and

Anna to sign some books that we already have in our Donburn Library.

Overall it was a very inspiring

evening and I was very happy to

have this great opportunity to

discuss wonderful literature.

Happy Reading!

Andrea Sertori - Library Teacher

Thank you to all the amazing parents who

have helped me to contact many of the new

way you support the lovely Donburn Library.

Feel free to visit me Monday-Thursday 8.45am-9am to borrow some books

eSMART NEWS UPDATE 2, 2018

Hi all,

It is our pleasure to introduce you to our eSmart Captains for 2018.

INTRODUCING…..Rebecca R and Oliver Pat.

Hi my name is Rebecca R.

I am one of the eSmart Captains for 2018. I am excited to have this

role because I have heard about people getting cyber-bullied and I

want to help the children of Donburn understand how to be safe on the

internet.

Hello my name is Oliver Pat.

This year I am an eSmart Captain. I feel privileged to have this role because I want to help

educate the children of Donburn about how to behave appropriately online and explain to

them why they shouldn’t give away too much personal information

online.

To maintain our eSmart status we will need to continue with our

parent committee that will meet throughout the year. It is anticipated

that we will have one meeting per term which will be ‘needs based.’ We would like to

encourage new parent members on our committee.

We usually meet on a Thursday morning before school (8:15 am, concluding by 8:45 am)

If you are interested in joining our committee please complete the form below and return it

to the office at your earliest convenience.

Looking forward to continuing our eSmart journey with you,

The eSmart Junior Reps are distributing ‘Student User Agreement’ for 2018 which will

come home this week. Please discuss this with you child at home to ensure they fully

understand what is expected of them as we aim to ensure competent ‘Global Citizens.’

The Student User Agreements will need to be returned to school, signed, before your child

will be able to access ICT whilst in class. Thank you for assisting us to educate informed

‘Junior Global Citizens!’
