In 1966 Samora was awarded a grant titled "United States-Mexico Border and an Analysis of Mexican American History," documented here. In addition, in 1975 the Ford Foundation approached Samora and Jorge Bustamante to develop a broad-based statement on issues of the U.S.-Mexico border region. The National Council of La Raza, now headquartered in Washington, DC, was founded in 1968 as the Southwest Council of La Raza in Phoenix, Arizona, with a grant from the Ford Foundation.
