2010
Juice Festival 20 – 31 OctoberNewcastleGateshead’s festival for children and young people
Juice – NewcastleGateshead’s award-winning festival for
children and young people is back for the third year. Packed
full of events that celebrate the creativity of young people,
the festival is presented in the world-class venues, facilities
and open air locations that make NewcastleGateshead such
a brilliant place to live, grow up in and visit.
The festival, with its many partners, is proud to commission and
present new work by children and young people – opening with
Photomapping Our World (p4) and closing with The Journey Home
(p25). Don’t miss our three Young Ranters events (p15) plus a fantastic
mix of other performances and exhibitions all created by young people.
Juice is all about taking part and across the festival there are
inspirational opportunities to try new experiences and develop new skills.
Join bboys from around the world in an action packed Just Jam Weekend
(p16); be part of a unique music event in Whaletone Opera (p8) and don’t
miss the Tate Movie Project (p12), where you can add your ideas to a new
animated film.
For families there are events across NewcastleGateshead during
October half term and we’re delighted to welcome back Urban Playground
& Gravity Style (a massive hit last year) with their new outdoor show –
The Next Level – combining free running with street dance (p28).
And of course, the final weekend makes the most of Halloween, with a
pumpkin carving extravaganza (p31) followed by a special Festival Finale
Parade (p31) – get dressed up, join in, and keep your eyes peeled…
was that Beastie?
Whatever you choose to come and see or do, we look forward to giving
you a warm Juice Festival welcome this October. Enjoy!

Central StationAn exhibition of photographs by children
from Gateshead
Running through the underpass, playing in the park, eating tea, watching TV.
In this exhibition, commissioned specially for Juice Festival, children aged 10 and 11 from St Aidan’s C of E Primary School in Gateshead have documented their own lives, photographing themselves, their families and friends.
The photographs were all taken during one week
in June, coinciding with the start of the 2010
FIFA World Cup. Working with two internationally
known photographers: Gideon Mendel and Crispin
Hughes, the children took digital cameras home
and decided what to photograph.

DNA by Dennis Kelly
A group of teenagers do something bad, really bad, then panic and cover the whole thing up. But when they find that the cover-up unites them and brings harmony to their otherwise fractious lives – where’s the incentive to put things right?
DNA is a poignant and sometimes hilarious tale
with a dark heart that has been described as
‘Grange Hill for the Skins generation’.
Meet the cast after each show and join their
discussion about the themes and issues contained
in the play and the challenges of putting on this
production.

When we migrate to an unknown future, what do we carry with us on our journey?Mannen som elsket Yngve
(The Man Who Loved Yngve) Presented by Pickin’ Flicks
Young cinema programmers aged 15-18 have selected the award-winning Norwegian drama The Man Who Loved Yngve to receive its regional premiere in front of a Juice audience.
It’s 1989, the Berlin Wall is about to collapse, and
the airwaves are full of the sounds of REM, The
Cure and Jesus and Mary Chain. For 17-year-old
Jarle, life is just about music, his punk band and the
beautiful Katrine. Until the day he meets Yngve, the
new kid in town...

The Night Pirates Presented by Theatre Hullabaloo
When dark shadows come stealing down Tom’s bedroom walls he thinks it might be monsters or ogres or trolls.
But Tom’s not afraid, for he’s a brave little boy. So
he peeps out of the window and what should he see
but PIRATES. Stranger still they’re GIRL PIRATES,
stealing the front of his house!
A fantastical moonlit adventure with puppets, song
and ballet-dancing pirates. This delightful adaptation
of the much loved picture book has been specially
created for young children and their families.
Don’t miss the special opportunity after each show
to join illustrator Deborah Allwright at work, meet
the cast and have a copy of The Night Pirates
signed (books will be available for purchase).
