Lorne Mackie: August 11, 1923 – September 20, 2011

Avis Mackie: April 3, 1928 – August 31, 2014

For decades, Avis and Lorne Mackie represented all that was knowledgeable, generous and dedicated to the Dog Fancy in Alberta and Canada.

Under the kennel name of O’Leprechaun, Avis and Lorne successfully bred Irish Setters. They had three Best in Show winners from one litter of Irish Setters in the 1970’s. Lorne was always the “Breeder-Owner-Handler”, training and field trialing his Irish. He was a field trial judge for both the CKC and the AKC.

They were a very popular and respected judging team for 25 years both at home in Canada and internationally. They were designated “Judge Emeritus” by the Canadian Kennel Club.

Avis was always ready to help organize events and specialties and the couple often held Sanction Matches on their farm by the Bow River

The Mackies were involved in the formation of the Evelyn Kenny Kennel and Obedience Club and were mentors to countless people in the Calgary community. Part of their legacy can be found in the community of people who volunteer in the local All-Breed and Breed Clubs to this day.

Avis served on the Board of the Veterinary School at the University of Saskatchewan for many years and she worked tirelessly in the dog community teaching handling classes, doing show secretarial work and never accepting payment for her efforts but asking the Clubs to donate to the Companion Animal Fund at the University of Saskatchewan.

Whether you were a friend or had only brief contact with them, you knew that they were among the best of us.

Here’s What’s Happening Over The Weekend

SET-UP DAY: Thursday, July 30, 2015

o Rally-O Sanction Match - commencing at approximately 6 pm on Thursday, July 30th on the Chinook Field in the Rally-O and Obedience Rings (Rings 1 & 2) Cost is $10/Class. Match judged by Kelly Ladoceur.

o Conformation Fun Match– commencing at approximately 6 pm on Thursday, July 30th on the Chinook Field – Rings TBD Cost: $10/entry

o Obedience Fun Match - commencing at approximately 6 pm on Thursday, July 30th on the Chinook Field in the Rally-O and Obedience Rings (Rings 1 & 2) Cost is $10/Class

Wristbands:

Starting on Thursday, July 30th from 3:00 PM onwards, come to the AKC Show Secretary desk located on the east end of the Chinook Field for pick-up. For those folks RV’ing with us, the wrist bands will be handed out during check in. These will allow you to come and go through the gates throughout the weekend.

Arm Bands & Prepaid Catalogues:o Armbands can be picked up as follows: All Breed - Conformation—at the AKC Show Secretary Desk – Friday, July 31st.o Specialty Conformation - in the Show Secretary Specialty Tent located against the grass hill on the North American Field,

Ringside or unless otherwise notified in the specialty judging schedule.o Obedience - Ringside at the Obedience Rings (Chinook Field)o Rally-O at Ringside at the Rally-O rings (Chinook Field)o Agility at Ringside at the Agility Rings (North American Field)o Pre-ordered catalogues will be available for pick up at the AKC desk, Friday, July 31st, no sooner than 1.5 hrs. prior to start

RV Parking:

RV Parking commences at 9 am on Thursday, July 30th

o Parking is assigned as you arrive, if you wish to camp together, please arrive together. For those wishing to camp as a group (Specialties), we are happy to arrange that for you as well for 2015 we have Great Dane Lane and Bernese Boulevard, Border Crossing and Golden Brick Road

o Our parking attendants will issue you your wristbands **Please note the gate leading into Lot 10 is closed every evening at 10 pm, there are alternate ways to come and go from the RV lots.**

o All Motorhomes and Trailers must have boards placed under the tires that park in Lot 10 (grass). Motorhome generators must be vented up (no matter the lot)

o If you have prepaid for a spot in our Handicapped area your trailer and tow vehicle or motorhome must be 32’ or less to park in this area as per our premium list and online verbiage, you must provide a valid, government issued handicapped placard if you do not have one of these we will have to assign you a space in Lot 10 or 11.

o Complimentary Showers donated by the Alberta Kennel Club are available – ask at the AKC desk for directions or follow the signs – the showers are East of the Fountain “Dog Spa”. Donations are greatly appreciated

o Dumping & Filling: We do not have this service available.o All parking is a privilege at Spruce Meadows. Anyone abusing these privileges will be excused immediately from

the show, and all future shows on this venue by the parking authorities and/or show superintendent. o There is no overnight tenting permitted at Spruce Meadows.o There are no overnight stays anywhere but in the assigned RV areas, these are Lot 10, 11 and handicapped only.

No RV’s or overnight camping in Lot 7 or 8.o No open fires permitted at any time, this includes propane fire pits due to the Fire bans across Albertao Quiet Time is from 11:00 pm to 6:00 am – NO GENERATORS may run during this time – NO EXCEPTIONS! Please

be courteous to your neighbours.

Reserved Benching:

K-Barn Indoor Benching:

o Indoor Benching commences at 1:00 pm on Thursday, July 30tho If you are leaving dogs in the stalls, your contact information must be visible in your benching area in the event of

an emergency.o You are responsible for leaving your stall as you found it…. CLEAN! Please ensure that you have a broom handy

to sweep out your stall, left behind garbage, dog hair, etc. is not the responsibility of the Alberta Kennel Club Volunteers or Spruce Meadows Personnel to clean up after you. We thank you for your cooperation in this regard!

Chinook & North American Ring Outdoor Benching:o Outdoor benching commences at 2:00 pm on Thursday, July 30th.o Grass mats are not permitted in the day tenting areas of the North American or Chinook Fields.o You are responsible for leaving your space as you found it…. CLEAN! Please ensure that you have a rake/tool

handy to clean up your area, left behind garbage, dog hair, rubber bands, etc. is not the responsibility of the Alberta Kennel Club Volunteers or Spruce Meadows Personnel to clean up after you. We thank you for your cooperation in this regard!

o Once the show commences you are welcome to drive into the designated Pick-up / Drop-off area on the north and south side of the wash bay areas. This area will be in operation all day. Note that you only have 15 minutes to drop off/pick up.

o Once you have dropped off your items, please make your way to Lot 7 for parking. o Please note there is no parking off of Tournament Lane or in the driveway next to the Chinook Ring, vehicles

parked in this area will be towed.o There is no parking permitted between the North American Ring or the All Alberta Ring, vehicles parked in this

area will be towed.o There is also no overnight stays anywhere but in the assigned RV areas, these are Lot 7, 10, 11 and handicappedo Unreserved Benching areas are available on the West side of K-Barn only.

Golf Cart Rental:

If you prepaid for a Golf Cart for the weekend, please see Wendy at the AKC Desk at 4 pm on Thursday, July 30th for pick up. Please ensure you have your valid insurance documents with you.

**Private Golf carts are not permitted on either field at any time**Shuttle Services:

We offer complimentary shuttle services daily from 7 am to 5 pm; this service is provided by our local Rotarians. Shuttles will be rotating constantly throughout the day. Shuttles will pick-up/drop off in Lot 10, Lot 11, Paved areas and from Lot 7. Dogs, equipment and humans welcome

Dog Bathing:

We have 4 stalls available on the south side of the horse wash bays, complete with hot and cold running water, 2 stalls are complete with bath tubs. Please be advised that this water is non-potable and not for drinking. No private bathing areas permitted in these areas.

Concessions:

o The Time Faults Pub is open at 7 am to 11 am daily for breakfast, and open the rest of the day until 9 pm for lunch or dinner. (Friday to Monday)

o There are concessions stands on the East end of the horse wash bays as well as the SE entrance of the North American Field. (Friday to Monday)

“NO PARKING” RESTRICTIONS WILL BE ENFORCED. NO EXCEPTIONS

o Downtown Calgary via MacLeod Trail: South on MacLeod Trail, then turn west on Spruce Meadows Trail (also known as Hwy 22X/Stoney Trail) and travel

approximately 2 km, watch for signs to Tournament Lane (turn left here), then follow the signs to AKC RV Parking, North American Entrance or Lot 7.

o From Edmonton via Deerfoot Trail: South on Deerfoot Trail, then turn west on Spruce Meadows Trail (also known as Hwy 22X/Stoney Trail) and travel

approximately 2 km, watch for signs to Tournament Lane (turn left here), then follow the signs to AKC RV Parking, North American Entrance or Lot 7.

o From US Border via Highway 2:1. Before reaching the southern city limits of Calgary, turn west on Spruce Meadows Trail (also known as Hwy

22x/Stoney Trail) and travel approximately 2 km, watch for signs to Tournament Lane (turn left here), then follow the signs to AKC RV Parking Lot 10, North American Entrance or Lot 7.

o Directions are also available at: albertakennelclub.org, canuckdogs.com and TheDogShow.ca. You will see a map to help you find Spruce Meadows and a map of the Spruce Meadows Facility. Enter using the west entry, Tournament Lane. Follow the signs and look for a parking assistant to direct you.

o Upon Arrival ---please follow the signs to the exhibitors drop off area and parking areas. o Show Site Maps will be available on a limited basis at the Information Booth, they are also located in PDF form on Canuck

Dogs should you wish to print them off prior to coming to the show.

Recycle, Garbage & Dog Poop:

o You are TOTALLY responsible for picking up after your dog. Spruce Meadows and the Alberta Kennel Club have ZERO tolerance for dog droppings on the grounds. Let’s be responsible and set a great example keeping the grounds pristine. Exhibitors who are found not picking up after themselves will be asked to leave the show immediately, no refunds provided.

o All Exhibitors are responsible for putting their recyclables, garbage and hair in the large garbage bins.

will be forcibly entered, the animal recovered and the owner will be subject to penalty under the Animal Protection Act 2(1) (1.1) 2.1©

o Security is on site from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily.

Exhibitors please note:

o Dogs must enter the show premises 1 (one) hour prior to the scheduled judging of the breed. Dogs which are not required for further judging may leave the show grounds after their judging is completed.

o Exhibitors and handlers are solely responsible for having their dogs at ringside at the scheduled time (absent dogs must be allowed for). It is not the responsibility of the Alberta Kennel Club or the ring steward to locate dogs.

o Judges shall not wait for any dog holding up a class. Groups and Best in Show will be announced and posted at the Show Secretary Desk (located on the Chinook Field) as well as posted at the Hospitality Gazebo.

o All Adult Group judging and Best in Show judging will be held in Ring # 19, the Best Overall Junior Handler judging will commence prior to Best in Show on Sunday, August 2nd, 2015 at approximately 5 pm in the Equipped. Individual breeds, dogs and classes will NOT be paged. Exhibitors and handlers with more than one dog must have an alternate handler available.

o Exhibitors noting possible dog conflicts between Conformation and Obedience and Rally must notify the Obedience Chairman, Ellen Kovar, or Rally Chairman Maureen O’Neil before the start of judging in the ring in question on the day in question. Judges will complete morning assignments before breaking for lunch.

o For your convenience the division of sexes has been carefully tabulated, however the Alberta Kennel Club does not assume responsibility for absolute accuracy. The number before each breed is the total number of that

breed; following the breed is the following division - males - females - special males - special females. *denotes booster and/or supported entry.

o The Alberta Kennel Club will not be responsible for the loss or injury to any dog, or for the possessions of any exhibitor whether a result of accident or any other cause. It is expressly understood that every dog at these show is in the care, custody, and control of the owner or handler during the entire time the dog is on the show premises. The welfare of an exhibitor’s child is the responsibility of the exhibitor. It should be understood that exhibitors will exercise control and restraint over their children.

CKC Adds New Qualifying Show for Crufts 2016In collaboration with The Kennel Club, the CKC has added one more avenue in which exhibitors can qualify

their dogs for the world's largest benched dog show. The Purina National™ 2015 Show, which will be held on August 2, 2015, in conjunction with the Alberta Kennel Club Summer Classic Show,

has been designated as a qualifying show.All group-placement winners (i.e., first, second, third and four in each group) will be eligible to enter Crufts in 2016. The Purina National alternates between the east and west,

so members at both ends of the country will have an equal opportunity to qualify.

The designation of a qualifying show is in addition to the system already in place: A dog may qualify for Crufts if it wins Best of

Breed, Best of Opposite or Award of Merit at its Canadian National Breed Specialty or it has placed within the Top 5 in its group

according to the Dogs in Canada Top Show Dog point system.
