JPEG vs JPEG 2000
Garret MaginEric Strehlow
Overview
• We have a created a web-based image quality assessment system to have users login and compare JPEG and JPEG 2000
• The system includes– User creation
– User Login
– Test Creation
– Test Running
– Results Viewing
User Creation/Login http://www.garretmagin.com/school/ece533/
• If first time at site, create a new user account
• Login
• Admin can create tests
• Users can take tests
• Users can view results
Create Test
• Give the test a name• Put any special notes about test desired• Upload image
Take Test
• Choose a test to takeby clicking on the name
• View results by clickingthe view results link on the bottom
Tests
• Each test is a set of 6 comparisons– The user will compare compressed JPEG and JPEG
2000 images to an original image
– Each comparison will be for a different compression ratio (2x, 10x, 25x, 50x, 100x, and 200x)
• The user will choose which of the two images more accurately represents the original image– The images will come up in random order and not say
if they are JPEG or JPEG 2000 to avoid user bias

Results
• The top displays overall results for all tests
• Click a test name to see individual test results
Test Results
• The top displays overall results for this particular test
• Each cell shows results broken down by compression ratio
Conclusions
• JPEG 2000 was chosen almost 10 times as often as JPEG
• In the typical compression range of 10-50x, JPEG 2000 was almost unanimously chosen
• There were no tests where JPEG was chosen more than JPEG 2000
