Our Prosperous Vision
Vision is the art of seeing the invisible.
Jonathan Swift
We have enjoyed a remarkable
January. With the completion of the
Prosperous Me 360 Degree Program,
twenty-four of us have explored what it
means to be truly prosperous. We have
learned it is all about consciousness. As
Michelle Wadleigh writes in Prosperous
Me, “Because as we who function in
consciousness all know, we are part of
this organism called Life, God, Spirit,
Energy,”.
In raising our consciousness we
anchor our minds in the Infinite. We
establish new
possibilities for
our everyday
living.
How do we
continue to do
this? How is it we
can come to
know which of the many possibilities for
prosperity are likely to be the most
fulfilling? I am not sure there is any way
to guarantee the most fulfilling, but I am
aware of a spiritual process that I believe
will open each person who uses it to a
deeper insight into their personal field of
consciousness. It will lead each to a
vision of life that embraces a fulfilling
spiritual path otherwise not imagined.
You see, visioning opens the doors of our
consciousness to perceive the invisible.
We can use this process to co-create
with Spirit a life grounded in the ultimate
Reality, God. We become truly in tune
with the Infinite.
Vision leads to life. Greater vision
leads to a greater expression of life.
When we become aware of what it is we
truly desire, we can begin to express it.
As we have learned in our studies in
prosperity, we are entitled by divine
birthright to the fullness of life itself.
There is no good that we cannot aspire
to. There is no noble purpose that is too
large for our higher self to embrace.
"Where there is no vision the people
perish," is stated in Proverbs 29:18. In
fact, if we have a limited vision for
ourselves, our lives become enmeshed in
the trivial. We can no longer see how
what we do everyday relates to the
overarching span of our existence. We
live disconnected from that Higher
Power because we lack the vision to
imagine what it is that we are all about.
Unaware of our vision, we may look from
the exterior point of view as if we are
alive, but our souls dim and our inner
sight becomes clouded, strength ebbs
and we are in the process of
withdrawing from a full, rich life.
With a clear vision of who and what
we are, we live a Spirit-led life. The arc
of our existence takes shape. Vision
provides a vantage point from which we

can see our decisions become turning points in our
lives. Vision reveals the hand of Infinite Love as it
prompts us to grow in spirit and in truth. With clear
vision our life proceeds in full force.
Each of us has our own personal vision for our lives.
If you want to learn how to make your vision conscious
and vital, learn the art of visioning. One way to do so
is to take advantage of our Visioning Course that starts
on Tuesday, February 10. In Visioning we learn to
become avenues for God-awareness. This is how we
learn to practice “the art of seeing the invisible.” Namaste, Rev. Maur
Applause This month we recognize
and thank the following:
Dick Walker for his service as
President of the Board of
Trustees as he goes off the
Board at the beginning of
the new term. Also, for his
ten years of service
maintaining our chapel and
grounds.
Pat Spece for completing
two terms serving on the
Board of Trustees. Her
service included serving in
the office of Treasurer which
is technically not a board
position. She has promised
to continue as Treasurer for
the time being.
Nadine Heusser for her
service as Secretary of the
Board of Trustees as her term
ends.
Carolyn Uplegger for staffing
our Center office two days a
week for over a year. She
takes a month’s vacation
complete with cruise.
The twenty four members of
our congregation who have
completed the Prosperous
Me 360 Program. We have
all become much more
conscious of the infinite
possibilities of living. When
even one person raises his or
her consciousness we all
benefit.
Membership Renewals
Forms for renewing membership in Woodland Chapel were mailed in December. Our By-laws call for members to renew their membership each year
in order to remain on the “active membership” list.
Inactive members can “reactivate” by filling out a mem-bership form. Please fill out and return your form if you
haven’t already. Membership shows commitment, and only members may vote in any elections.
Considering becoming a member?
Application forms are available at the Community Matters table, and Introductory classes are offered
the third Sunday each month following Sunday service.
Woodland Chapel 3
Annual Meeting is February 15 following the Sunday Celebration Service
Two Board members will be elected to fill upcoming vacancies. Nadine Heusser and Pat
Spece will be leaving the Board. We thank them for their service. Members will vote to fill those two positions. Any congregant may attend, but only
members may vote. Pat will continue to serve in her valuable role as Treasurer.
Visioning Class will be on Tuesdays Eight Weeks Beginning February 10
3:30 to 6:30 pm
This course includes the history of how visioning began in our move-
ment with the inspiration of Dr. Michael Beckwith. There are weekly opportunities for
visioning at different levels from the individual, to the community, to the global, and
this class explains the role of visioning in our Global Heart Model.
Our spiritual community has twice used Visioning to shape the present reality of our
Center. This course will awaken the transformational nature of Visioning for growth
and prosperity in our personal lives and in our spiritual community. Come learn how
this organic manifestation can happen with ease and grace.
The signup sheet is in the library. The Student Workbook is the only required textbook
and is included in the $100 Tuition. Some scholarships are available. Don’t let cost
keep you out.
“When one individual is true to his or her vision, it assists in liberating everyone. ”
---Rev. Michael Beckwith, D.D.
The Centers for Spiritual Living is holding its annual conference in
Las Vegas February 16 through 19
Rev Maur will be attending. The conference is held at this time every year,
Anyone may attend, so be thinking about this for next year and get
your reservations in early, as it is sold out for this year.
Fund-raising Events Planned for Building Fund
We plan to continue with month-long raffles as a fun way to begin fund-raising
for the major work that is required to repair the foundation of the building
and fix the sidewalk. A rummage sale is planned for July 17 to 19 to coincide
with the Art Fair. We hope that anything you may no longer need,
you’ll hold onto until July for donating to this important cause.
Other plans include a possible Buy-a-Brick program, a Friday spaghetti dinner and
movie night, a Christmas Bazaar and Silent Auction. So if you are a crafter or artist,
there is plenty of time to create items for donating to these events, as well. And, we
will have sign-up sheets for volunteers to help with these fund-raisers.

Get to Know Pat and Kay Elling, Founding Members
Pat Elling graduated Willamette University in 1951, then married Gail Murray and moved
to Portland. Following Gail’s untimely death, Pat retuned to Salem and joined her parents,
Mike and Margaret Zahare, as founding members of what would become Woodland
Chapel. A group interested in learning New Thought principles originally met in a private
home on Sundays. Later Rev Roland deVries lead the group in acquiring property for con-
structing a church building. Pat’s father was among those members with building skills who
actually built the Chapel. All members played a hands-on role in establish-
ing this new church from the ground up. Fern Crozier, mother of present-
day members Gayle Priem and Sherlee Cave was another of the founding
members, and set up the library, which is named after her.
Pat spent part of the summer of 1955 in Los Angeles and recalls going to
hear Dr. Ernest Holmes speak on Sundays at the Wilshire Blvd Theater. Woodland Chapel
held its first service in the new Chapel on November 17, 1957, before the Founder’s Church
was established. Pat remembers later attending a mortage-burning ceremony conduct-
ed by Rev deVries.
In 1958 Pat met Kay, and the couple became the first members married in
Woodland Chapel in 1959 by Rev deVries. When Rev deVries and his wife
moved to California, Rev Ray Lilley became the minister. The congregation
grew to fill the sanctuary, requiring two Sunday services, with people sitting in
the balcony, and even a few in the library at times. The two classrooms downstairs were
utilized for young children, and the Fireside Room was divided and used for older children.
Needing more space, eventually, the church purchased the Hillman House and used it for
junior high and high school classes. There was one-way traffic as cars would exit over on
Church Street.
Pat’s father Mike was head usher with a team of volunteers alternating Sundays, and
Pat and her mother would bring flowers from their home gardens for the platform on Sun-
days. The congregation held plenty of events, one of which was a potluck summer picnic
at Paradise Island when it was a park. Woodland Chapel hosted well-known speakers and
conferences back in the 60’s and 70’s and even a music concert at Willamette University.
Pat taught Sunday School for many years when their children were young, and she recalls
a caravan of cars that transported older youth to the Science of Mind summer camp lo-
cated in the mountains west of Palo Alto, California. Their son and daughter participated
for many years.
Pat and Kay were both teachers, beginning their teaching careers in the Salem public
schools. Kay was selected to teach in a new vocational/technical school just starting up in
West Salem. This later became Chemeketa Community College, and they both spent
most of their teaching careers there. Kay taught science, and Pat’s subject was Spanish.
Kay also sold real estate, and they both helped run their farm off Wiltsey Road. The Mushroom Society holds meetings at Woodland Chapel, and the connection be-tween the two goes back a long way. Pat and Kay, and other members of the church al-so belonged to the mushroom-hunting group back in the 80’s. Woodland Chapel is trulyblessed to have legacy members as a part of our congregation today.

Change Your Attitude; Change Your Life
Years ago I discovered a quote which still comes to mind often, “Attitudes are more important
than facts.” Religious Science has shown me the truth of that statement.
I retired from a large aerospace company after thirty-two years of employment. I was involved
in many different projects and had a wide range of responsibilities. The variety kept me interest-
ed and involved.
A few years ago, a friend told me he had left engineering after a few years because he be-
came stuck in one area with little chance to expand. That certainly was not my experience. My
attitude was I could ask to be involved in new and interesting projects. The result was a rich and
rewarding career, both creatively and financially. As Jesus said, ‘It is done unto you as you be-
lieve.”
Early in my career I had a vision of retiring and “doing what I wanted.” I now realize that I was
actually doing what I wanted to do during my employment. The trust in the Universe that I
gained through Religious Science saw me through many difficulties on the way to manifesting
my vision of retirement. One of these situations provided a vital lesson.
My company was considering a move to another state. Until the decision was made, I was mis-
erable. I was close to retirement and did not want to move. Ultimately, we remained in our lo-
cation. I realized I had put myself through months of stress and anxiety for nothing. From then
on, my attitude changed. I let situations be what they were and took care of what I could. This
change in attitude allowed me to look at subsequent potential disappointments with emotional
detachment but, at the same time, be completely involved in my own decisions. This relaxed
state of mind created clarity and awareness that, in earlier situations, had been hidden in clouds
of stress.
As my company downsized, incentives to retire were offered. I was initially too young to take ad-
vantage of them, but knowing that life evolves perfectly if we let it, I looked forward to what
would be available when the time arrived. When I finally reached retirement age, the incentives
were better than ever before. Additionally, I was able to retire three days before the benefit
package was reduced. God has perfect timing if we get ourselves out of the way!
Now that I am retired, I seem to be busier than ever. I enjoy every moment because I do what I
want to do, scheduling my own time. I find it especially interesting that I am now involved with
technology and in teaching, doing exactly what I wanted all along! Attitudes ARE more im-
portant than facts.
Bio: Larry Weaver was born in Harvey, Illinois, a suburb
south of Chicago. He attended the Universities of Cin-
cinnati and Southern California, receiving an MSEE. Af-
ter years of studying Emerson, he was introduced to Re-
ligious Science by a friend. He received his ministerial
certificate in Religious Science in 1995.

From Here to Infinity
Adaptation
We will look at three aspects of Adaptation, first looking at how na-
ture makes gradual physical changes for the betterment of the
species. By definition Adaptation refers both to the current state of
being adapted and to the dynamic evolutionary process that
leads to the adaptation. Organisms have faced a succession of
environmental challenges as they grew and developed, say for in-
stance, when crawling out of the sea, fins turned into feet. Can you imagine how
much a hair cut would cost if we still looked like Neanderthal man?
Then there is a seasonal change including the ability to change color for camouflage
reasons and signaling to a mate – you’re open for business. So far we have seen Phys-
ical changes, why not call mental changes “Adaptation”. For instance we walk into a
Religious Science Church, sometimes called ‘Center for Spiritual Living’. You’re really
‘Turned on’ and want to do and think like your fellow members. Right away you’re
bathed in Positive Thinking and are impressed by the effortless nodding of the head
when discussing Principles. Next stop is a learning experience while taking “class”. ‘We
are one’, what a delightful thought. Everywhere I look, I see
the face of God. If you went walking down the street and a
stranger told you, “You are God…” you would make a right
smartly retreat. There is a 2000-year-old saying that puts this
concept into proper perspective… “He who knows all things to
be the Great Omnipresent Self, Grieves no more”.
Beyond class one can read all about Religious Science philosophy in a publication
called “Science of Mind”, with article titles like “Do You Embrace Your Divine Essence?
A Golden Opportunity Awaits You”. The article says – whatever your dilemmas, wher-
ever you are in life, you are equipped to embrace your Divine Essence and embark
on a path to activate the Presence and Power of the God that resides within.
With Science of Mind classes you learn of the oneness of Life, the Love of God, and
how to use spiritual mind treatment for Health, Prosperity, an understanding of God,
and an Infinitely Splendid state of mind.

Planned Giving
We believe that abundance flows in all directions when we
give. It not only blesses and prospers where our money
goes, but abundance comes back to us. “Give, and it shall
be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and
shaken together, and running over…. “ (Luke 6:38)
This applies to tithing to your spiritual home. And giving
can be part of your overall financial planning in the form of
a bequest in your will or trust. Just something to think about.

Spiritual Mind Treatment
God is all there is and all God is, is Good. Since God is all there is, and is
all Good– then it must be that I am some part of God and all Good. I
now accept the Divine heritage of this All Good and share it with all in
my world. Everyone has as their birthright this Goodness that is God.
With a thankful and grateful heart I continue to be a channel for God
to express in greater and greater measure It’s Goodness in the world.
Everywhere we are, God is, and all is well.
So it is.
