ShArpEn Your wAtchdog tEEthInvestigative reporting is not just for a select few reporters and producers. Discover key websites, tools and resources that will super-charge your story ideas. divErSitY dAtA-Mining: Finding iMportAnt dEMogrAphic trEndS in cEnSuS dAtABy 2040 the United States will be a majority minority country. There are several great stories to tell about the changing demo-graphics of our country that are hidden in plain sight within Census data. This computer-assisted reporting workshop will teach reporters to dig through data and find important stories that reveal how their communities are changing. Reporters will learn to examine data that can predict trends in areas including education, housing and transportation. Participants will walk away with solid story ideas they can take back to their newsrooms.

MAking thE right cAll: thE EthicS chAllEngE

Journalists face tough calls every day. In the field, in the news-room, on the Web we all have that moment when we think to ourselves, ‘’Did I do the right thing?’’ Participate in a lively discussion that will let you take the lessons we’ve all learned back to your newsroom. There’s rarely just one right call. We’ll team you with other journalists as you challenge your-selves and have fun looking at real life, real time, and really tough decisions that journalists make on a daily basis.

rEvolutionizE Your cArEEr: how to gEt A JournAliSM FEllowShip Today’s digital tools are revolutionizing how information is gath-ered, reported and delivered. The nation’s top three, yearlong journalism fellowships offer an opportunity to re-position your-self in this ever-changing environment. They give you time and support to retool, recharge and help re-invent journalism with multimedia training, ongoing workshops and all the resources of world-class research universities and technology centers. In an interactive session with program decision-makers and former fellows, find out how a fellowship can reshape your career.

dronES: thE nEw AirbornE rEportEr in Your FuturE

University journalism programs are testing and researching the practical, legal and ethical confines of using drones in the news-gathering process. Unmanned camera drones are becoming affordable for even modest newsroom budgets. The FAA will release new rules for these tools in 2015, but many ethical and legal considerations and restrictions will arise. Discuss the tech-nology, trends and limitations this emerging field represents.

growth in hiSpAnic MEdiASpanish-language media isn’t going anywhere. In fact, it continues to grow. In 2012, Fox launched MundoFox, a new Spanish network, aiming to compete with veterans Univision and Telemundo. In Los Angeles, Time Warner Cable launched a Spanish-language channel. And now, Univision is expanding into English-language news with Fusion, its new joint venture network with ABC. Learn how these growth trends affect all news media as outlets compete for a fast-growing Hispanic demographic.

iMMigrAtion lAw 101The promise of comprehensive immigration reform by President Obama and a bipartisan proposal to pave a pathway to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants is once again fueling discussion and generating news coverage. How can journalists be better informed about the complexity of immigration law? An immigration attorney will review immigration law as it applies to news media coverage of one of 2013’s biggest issues.
