Dear Reader,

T his is a very special year for Maritim Hotels: we are celebrating our 50th birth-day. We opened the very first Maritim Hotel, the Maritim Seehotel Timmen-dorfer Strand on the Baltic Coast, in 1969. A whole host of other hotels have

joined the hotel group since then, both across Germany and internationally, and a special “Maritim DNA” has developed. This consists of warm hospitality, qualified staff, outstand-ing cuisine and professional event management – all with tremendous dedication and service with a smile. We have always done lots of things “in-house”, as the article on page 46 reveals.

While the cover story of this latest edition of the “Maritim Journal” takes a brief look back at our company’s origins, I have always believed that looking to the future is more important. Yesterday’s satisfied guests endorse the work we do. However, the ongoing challenge is to ensure that tomorrow‘s guests are equally satisfied, and this is what we strive for each and every day.

We have undertaken a raft of activities in recent years to ensure that you, our valued guests, enjoy staying with us. That’s why we have invested several million euros in renovat-ing a number of our hotels. For more details, turn to page 40 of this magazine. Sustaina-bility is more than a short-lived trend for us. We have established “Green Teams” in all our hotels. They work with our technical departments and many others to make sure that our work is as environmentally friendly as possible. This is part of our contribution to safeguarding our shared future.

Our Maritim Academy allows us to provide our employees with ongoing training, ensuring that the service we provide is second to none while raising job satisfaction. Moreover, we have always paid particular attention to providing young people with excellent training, giving them the ideal start to their professional life.

On the following pages, you will find plenty of attractive offers to enjoy during our anniversary year. In particular, I would like to draw your attention to our charity cam-paign in aid of SOS Children’s Villages. Whatever you do, please buy one of our cups and make sure that you refill it on a regular basis at one of our hotels. You can then enjoy your favourite hot beverage at the same time as doing something positive for others. More on this on page 38.

You have always been, and will continue to be, most welcome at Maritim.

Best wishes,Dr Monika GommollaChair of the Supervisory Board

”Satisfied guests are the best reward for our work.“

A getaway with a sea view

My tip for the Baltic Coast

“The south-westerly harbour on the Baltic Coast is also one of the smallest and yet there’s everything there you could ever

need: two yacht clubs, a shipyard and, of course, the fishing fleet which moors on the harbour’s quay walls every morning after work. It consists of about twenty

cutters that still go out fishing every day, including three open sea cutters. There’s

also lots to discover above the quay walls. In addition to a small fish market, handicraft shops, small restaurants and cosy cafés entice you inside. And every

few weeks harbour festivals, concerts and events provide plenty of atmosphere.

Come and visit. And enjoy!”

Where it all began Maritim Seehotel Timmendorfer Strand

The Maritim Hotel success story began 50 years ago at the fine seaside resort of Timmendorfer Strand. With its prime location on the coast, rooms with a sea view, large halls, fine cuisine and attractive leisure facilities the Maritim Seehotel soon won over the hearts of its guests. That’s still the case today.

A s soon as you step into the hotel you catch the holiday bug. Your eyes are drawn to

the view of the sea from the reception. When Maritim founder Hans-Joachim Gommolla put his ambitious plans into action in 1969, he entered unchart-ed territory. “It was the first hotel that was right on the beach,” says General Manager Jochen H. Stop, causing a stir, that was the talk of the town and the press. Still today the Maritim Seehotel is never short of guests. “In the summer we’re fully booked,” says the hotel boss. And in the cooler winter months, demand

has been boosted in recent years by smart decisions and high investments – for example in the elegant spa area.Once you’ve holidayed at this hotel, known for its prime location and cosy at-mosphere, you tend to come back again. “Around half our guests are regulars,” says Stop. This includes many families and even grandparents who enjoy spen-ding time with their grandchildren. The hotel thanks its regular guests for their loyalty by offering special travel offers like the “Stammgastwochen” (regular guest weeks) that promise exclusive highlights and personal attention from members

of the hotel management. Many regulars wait for this offer and book quickly: ˮIt‘s always like a family reunion.“

Beach or excursionsSeehotel offers the perfect conditions for a relaxing holiday, where adults and children alike get their money‘s worth. When the weather is nice, the fine, sandy beach and the Baltic sea have a magical pull. Relax in a beach chair, build some sandcastles, take part in a bit of water sports and bask in the warm rays of the sun in a beautiful blue sky – the simple holiday pleasures.

And when the weather isn’t playing ball then the guest programme comes into play. Activity leader Martina Tesnau is full of good ideas. She organises beach walks (even in the rain), cocktail classes, wine tastings and excursions to the surrounding areas, such as Hamburg (with harbour visit and musical visit), the marzipan town of Luebeck or the Karl May Festi-val in Bad Segeberg. You can even spon-sor an apple tree: come spring guests can see “their” tree in full blossom and by autumn they can pick the apples. ˮWith us, you can experience a lot on every day of the holiday,” promises the Manager who also thinks about the little guests who are well looked after by his team on public and school holidays. Cultural and sporting events also offer the guests an additional experience. In previous years concerts have been held by Peter Maffay, Sarah Connor and Roland Kaiser amongst others and regular beach volleyball, hockey and polo tournaments are also held. ‘

Beauty & wellnessIf you’re after peace and a bit of me-time then you’re in good hands in the Seeho-tel’s spa area. “maritim spa & beauty care” was opened in 2006, a 3,000 square metre oasis of well-being with a wide range of packages and treatments. Health-con-scious guests like to swim a few laps in the

indoor seawater pool, followed by a session in the sauna and then finish up in the re-laxation area that offers an exclusive view of the spa gardens. The adjoining treat-ment centre also offers the opportunity to pamper body, mind and soul with soothing massages, sea salt scrubs, algae mud baths and cosmetic treatments.

Golfers welcomeAiming to provide maximum holiday en-joyment, the Seehotel is also perfect for golfers. The Maritim Golfpark Ostsee, idyllically situated on Lake Hemmels-dorf, can be reached in no time at all. Beginners and experienced players will get their money’s worth on the three-part 27-hole course. Hotel guests ben-efit as they only have to pay the green fee. On top of that, every Friday golfers at the hotel can show off their skills in a guest tournament and if you’re con-sidering taking up golf for the first time make use of the super low-priced all-in-clusive offer: “A week’s stay at the hotel half-board, course permit, golf bag and set of clubs for 1,000 euros,” notes the General Manager, an avid golfer himself. No matter how you spend your holiday culinary delights await you. Your day at

No matter the weather, the spacious oasis of well-being revitalises the body, mind and soul.

Maritim Seehotel Timmendorfer Strand features 241 rooms and suites, 3 restaurants, 2 bars and a beach lounge. In the 8 event rooms, up to 1,650 people can meet and celebrate. The 3,000 square metre spa area “maritim spa & beauty care” promises relaxation.

the Seehotel begins perfectly with the legendary Maritim signature breakfast buffet, which leaves nothing to be de-sired. Half-board guests and those who prefer to spontaneously choose from a menu can enjoy delicious dishes made by Head Chef Marc-Horst Lembke and his team in the “Seeterrassen Restau-rant” offering a beautiful sea view. The rustic and cosy “Friesenstube” is perfect for a small snack or regional speciali-ties. And if you’re after something a bit more refined, then the Michelin-starred “Orangerie” Restaurant is a great choice. Whatever Head Chef Lutz Nieman cooks up in this gourmet temple, unique to Maritim, whether well-known or more exotic, is always a treat for the senses. Finally, wind down at the end of the day with a nightcap at the ‘Windjammerbar’ or ‘73Bar’.As Manager of this all-round and high-ly popular hotel, Jochen H. Stop looks

forward to the future in a relaxed way: “We are looking forward to the next suc-cessful 50 years.” But now he wants to celebrate with the guests. How? “Just wait for the surprise” he answers with a wink as he enjoys, just as his guests do, the view of the beach and sea from the glass-fronted lobby.

//TIMMENDORFER STRANDThe Loskant family from Muenster have a tradition: they take their holidays at the Maritim Seehotel Timmendorfer Strand – sometimes up to three times a year. General Manager Jochen Stop (right) thanked the regulars for their loyalty (left of photo, Silke Szymoniak, Head of Mar-keting for the local district). 89-year-old Helga Loskant (front) took the opportunity to tell those gathered about the good luck which brought her to the resort for the first time in 1963, having won first prize in a competition to spend two magical weeks on the Baltic Coast.

// MANNHEIMIn Germany, Mary Roos is known as the Grande Dame of pop. Her sense of humour was on dis-play again when she toured with cabaret artist Wolfgang Trepper. Following her appearance at the Capitol in Mannheim, Mary Roos stayed at the Maritim Parkhotel Mannheim where she continued to charm fans, especially receptionist Kay Skrzipek.

// BERLINAfter having moved to the capital last year to take up his new position as Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas visited Maritim Hotel Berlin to attend a conference. The Maritim PartnerCard was launched in 2002. It costs 20 euros per year. The Maritim PartnerCard Plus also offers additional services for our senior guests. The application form can be downloaded from www.maritim.com.

In the anniversary year, cardholders will benefit from the special anniver-sary offer of an immediate 10 % dis-count on all services in Maritim Hotel restaurants and bars in Germany and an anniversary cocktail on arrival.

It couldn’t be easier

With guaranteed discounts on all hotel services, holders of the Maritim PartnerCard are sitting pretty. There is also a wide range of additional extras to enjoy. Claudia Ehry wouldn’t be without her gem of a card.

Worth its Weight in Gold

A t breakfast, it really is nice to not have to wait until the oth-er guests have finished with

the complimentary newspapers. My copy is already waiting for me outside my room first thing in the morning. While I indulge in the delicious food from the opulent buffet, I can catch up on current affairs in peace. My newspaper is just one of my Maritim PartnerCard benefits. The card has a permanent place in my purse, alongside nine other payment and loyalty cards, but it occupies a special place in my heart. From the very first day, its beauti-ful golden sheen told me that I was im-portant to Maritim. I have to admit that I love this sort of appreciation. From the moment I check in at the luxurious PartnerCard desk, I get the VIP treat-

ment. Without paying extra, I can move into my reserved room from 11 a.m. with the “Early check-in” ser-vice, subject to room availability. And there’s more. When I enter the room, I know that it’s the best one available in the selected category. Later at the bar, I’m not asked to pay or sign – my wel-come cocktail is on the house. The card makes the end of my trip more enriching too! I love be-ing able to use it to pay the bill and then get three percent credited to my card, which I can redeem against my next break. I am filled with almost childlike delight at the thought of that saving paying for a nice t-shirt or a new

favourite book. Four times a year, I receive a letter from Maritim. And that letter is eagerly awaited. Alongside my statement and discount credit balance, the envelope also contains the PartnerCard newsletter

(only in german language). All those fabulous Maritim desti-

nations! I get stuck into the newsletter as soon as I can, losing myself in holi- day daydreams that are just waiting to be turned

into reality. When I decided to pur-

chase my exclusive Maritim PartnerCard 16 years ago, I didn’t know how beneficial it would be. I now take full advantage of it every time I stay at a Maritim Hotel. One thing’s for sure: I will never give my golden card back.

It is easy to order your personal Maritim PartnerCard online at www.maritim.com.

Tips!

Meeting on a grand scale: the conference hotels Hotels that provide access to external fa-cilities in addition to their own halls are particularly suitable for large-scale events. A good example of this is Maritim Hotel Dresden, which can host up to 6,800 con-ference guests in partnership with the Inter-national Congress Centre Dresden. With the modern Congress Centrum, the Messe Bremen (exhibition and conference centre) and the ÖVB Arena (formerly Stadthalle Bremen) on its doorstep, the Maritim Hotel Bremen offers the ideal combina-tion of conference facilities. The Maritim Hotel Ulm and the adjoining Congress Centre also provide the perfect venue for large events, conferences, seminars and even concerts, with the Einstein-

saal’s galleries, stage and orchestra pit. The nearby exhibition halls and con-gress centre make the Maritim Hotel Frankfurt a favourite location for confer- ences all year round. Here’s a tip for you: The sixth-floor SkyLounge affords a fantastic view over the city, making it a popular venue for staging exclusive events, meetings or dinner functions. At the Maritim Parkhotel Mannheim, the neighbouring Congress Centre Rosengarten and the hotel’s own meet-ing and seminar facilities complement each other perfectly. The hotel and the conference centre are also conveniently located next door to each other at the Maritim Hotel Würzburg. At the Maritim Hotel Stuttgart with its under-

ground link to the Liederhalle Culture and Congress Centre, the historic “Alte Stuttgarter Reithalle” creates a festive ambience. The Maritim Hotel Bad Homburg holds larger events at the ad-joining Kurhaus Congress Centre.

There is huge variety when you travel from one Maritim Hotel to the next, from cosy holiday hotels to lively city hotels hosting conferences.

A unique maritime atmosphere greets holidaymakers at Maritim Hotels on the Baltic coast – especially during the Kiel Week Regatta.

Maritim Hotels has a reputation for hosting particularly large and diverse events. The concept “daytime business and overnight accommodation under one roof” has made the company a market leader. Oliver Kühlmann, Director of Sales Germany,

gives us a peek behind the scenes.

Oliver Kühlmann knows what his conference guests want.

19th century charm: the Alte Stuttgarter Reithalle at the Maritim Hotel.

Maritim Journal: Mr Kühlmann, do event managers at Maritim often come by large events that require them to be able to accommodate participants in the same hotel?

Oliver Kühlmann: Many of our hotels have rooms with high capacities for holding large events such as trade meetings, shareholder meetings or national and international congress-es. Offering attendees the shortest route from their room to the meeting place is part of Maritim Hotel‘s essence. The “daytime business and overnight accommodation under one roof ” concept saves time and is very convenient for everyone involved.

Maritim Journal: Does Maritim only care about large-scale events?

Oliver Kühlmann: Not at all. We take care of smaller events with the same professionalism and cordiality. Our attractive boardrooms or conference suites can be booked for meetings of up to twelve people. We also offer suitable rooms for work-shops and seminars, as well as conferences and meetings for a manageable number of people. Regardless of its size, every event is in good hands at Maritim. Not least, the prestigious halls are preferred for corporate and family celebrations.

Maritim Journal: What technical facilities can customers expect?

Oliver Kühlmann: That differs from event to event. Most ask for projectors, screens and simple sound systems which are all available in the hotels. We procure complex sound, light or video conferencing technology from specialised partners. As a matter of course, customers now expect a stable internet connection with sufficient bandwidth. We offer 15Mbs per

user and can arrange extra performance beyond that, when necessary, with our partner Telekom. If desired, we can pro-vide a dedicated LAN or wi-fi network for the event.

Maritim Journal: In 2012 Maritim introduced the “Green Meeting” package. What was the reason for this, what does it offer and how have customers reacted to it?

“Many of our hotels have rooms with high capac-ities for holding large events.”

Maritim Journal I Summer 2019 25

Page 26: Journal - Maritim12370].pdf · For the guests and friends of Maritim Hotels Journal Magazine Nr. 72 Summer 2019 COVER STORY A reason to celebrate 50 years of Maritim Hotels Where

Oliver Kühlmann: The “Green Meeting” package originates from our “ProUmwelt” (pro-environment) programme that we launched in 2010. This commits the company to sustainable business. For customers that book a “Green Meeting”, the banquet team equips the workstations with recyclable statio-nery, FSC-certified conference blocks and biodegradable pens. For lunch, there are mainly seasonal regional products and in the breaks, smoothies, vegetable sticks and other healthy snacks. The concept is mostly booked by customers that find sustaina-bility important.

Maritim Journal: How are your customers looked after?

Oliver Kühlmann: Active care is ensured by our sales team across Germany. In addition, we offer our customers an un-beatable service with the Maritim Sales Service Centre. The highly-qualified employees in this team specialise in organising events and group bookings of all sizes. They have access to all Maritim Hotels in Germany and abroad. From the time of booking, the customer is given a fixed contact person at the hotel to ensure the event is organised and exe-cuted without a hitch. After the event, we invite them to give us feedback. It is important for us to know if the customer is satisfied with the event and our performance, and we are happy to receive any suggestions.

Maritim Journal: What happens if the hotel is fully booked?

Oliver Kühlmann: If we cannot fulfil a booking request we accommodate our customers with the “MICE Management by Maritim” service in which we gather offers from other hotels or service providers. This saves the customer work and time as they don’t have to search for themselves.

Maritim Journal: What about catering?

Oliver Kühlmann: Great food plays an important role in the suc-cess of every event. Our professionals in the kitchen impress time and time again with creative ideas to suit the season, occasion or environment. For events outside the hotel, the Maritim Catering Service spoils guests with fine canapés, rustic finger food, exclusive speciality buffets or multi-course meals.

Maritim Journal: What do event organisers like most about Maritim?

Oliver Kühlmann: In conversations with our customers, the same merits are repeatedly mentioned: diverse event capacities, rooms with natural light, flexible design options, easy accessibility. Our many years of experience allow us to respond to individual needs and fulfil customer requirements of almost any kind.

Spacious: “Saal Hanse” at Maritim Hotel Bremen has room for 1,600 people.

Every detail planned: the final preparations.

Maritim Journal: Maritim is turning 50. When you think back to the beginning ...

Oliver Kühlmann: ... I am filled with the momentum with which the conference area has evolved from a vision into the true Maritim building block. Maritim’s founder Hans-Joachim Gommolla started in Timmendorfer Strand with 241 rooms and eight conference rooms. Today, on its 50th anniversary, the Maritim portfolio comprises around 14,000 rooms and in the 44 hotels in Germany and abroad we offer around 570 confe-rence rooms.

Maritim Journal: Finally, dare we look to the future? How do you think the events market will develop?

Oliver Kühlmann: Digitalisation will continue to move forward but I‘m also convinced that video conferencing and live stream- ing will not completely replace personal contact. If people want

to work and communicate successfully, they need to look each other in the eye. Sitting next to or going to lunch with contacts is a whole lot different to just seeing them on a screen. Regard-less of technological progress, in the future, the event business will continue to thrive on people meeting each other. Our hotels provide the perfect conditions for doing so.

Maritim Journal: Many thanks for the interview, Mr Kühlmann.

The interview was conducted by Claudia Ehry.

Germany’s best-known hotel group has reason to celebrate. For half a century Maritim has been the flagship of Germany’s first-class hotel industry. It all began with a visionary concept, that soon became the trademark of the rapidly expanding hotel group: “Daytime business and overnight accommodation under one roof”.

50 years of Maritim Hotels –

the success story

M arket observers were adamant: “that will never pay off” company founder Hans-Joachim Gommolla heard all too often when he spoke of his plans to

build a large hotel with rooms and halls. In the 1960s, small private hotels shaped the accommodation sector. The idea of conferences and congresses was alien to the industry. But this did little to put Gommolla off his idea. On the Baltic Coast spa resort, Timmendorfer Strand, he won over support from the mayor to carry out his construction project. At first, sceptical comments accompanied the growth of the ten-storey tall Goliath that towered far above the surrounding buildings. Once completed, however, critics fell silent as the build was a proven success. “It was a great moment to see the first guests arrive“ recalls the daughter and today‘s Chairman

of the Supervisory Board, Monika Gommolla, about the open-ing of the first hotel in 1969. The preparations continued down to the wire and the whole family got stuck in: “lamps, decora-tive objects and much more – all arranged floor by floor at the last minute.”

Glitz and glamourAfter opening, things moved rather quickly as the builder real-ly splashed out on spectacular opening parties that filled the new construction with glitz and glamour. The notables of the time ar-rived in stylish state coaches or flew in by helicopter, making the most of the helipad on the roof of the hotel. Gunther Sachs and the Bismarcks visited the Maritim Seehotel, Henri Nannen, then editor-in-chief and publisher of the ˮStern“, rode in the stretch

limousine, and the press documented the illustrious activity in de-tail. The image of the chic Timmendorfer Strand was born. The brilliant start on the Baltic Coast stirred up interest from officials from other German cities. What’s more, Gommolla had timed his move perfectly. It was the time of the German “economic miracle”: after the war and during the post-war years, the newly strengthened companies needed rooms for meetings, conferences and company celebrations. The idea of attendees also being able to sleep in the same hotel went down well with event organisers. Despite initial doubts, the “day-time business and overnight accommodation under one roof ” concept quickly became a success. Gommolla was inundated with offers of land and he grabbed at the chance. years later, the hotels in Kiel, Bad Salzuflen and Gelsenkirchen were opened in quick succession. This was followed by hotels in Braunlage and a further hotel in Timmendorfer Strand. Inspired by the idea of providing Ger-man guests with familiar comforts abroad, in 1980 the hotel group ventured beyond the country‘s borders for the first time and opened the independent-ly-built Maritim Hotel Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Again, the plan worked and led to further activities abroad. Today, Maritim Hotels has a presence in eight countries across the world, in-cluding Mauritius, Egypt, Turkey, Malta, Spain, China and – new for this season – Bulgaria. With a finger on the pulse of the latest market trends and the needs of customers, Maritim is in per-fect shape for celebrating its anniversary. The consistently positive performance in recent years makes it possible to in-vest in renovating the older hotels and tackle new building projects with ener-gy and enthusiasm. Ambitious plans are

being pursued: in Ingolstadt, Szczecin (Poland) and China further hotels are being developed and in Amsterdam, the largest conference hotel in the Nether-lands will be graced with the three blue sails. These hotels will also be run to Maritim’s high standard of quality and services – a claim that is recognised by the quality press with awards for “high customer confidence” and “best train-ing”. Concerns for intact living spaces are of no less importance. That’s why, as early as 2010, Maritim launched the “ProUmwelt” (pro-environment) initia-tive and established “Green Teams” in all hotels to ensure sustainability. Following the company founder’s death in 1994 his daughter took on the run-ning of the hotel group, later becom-ing part of the Supervisory Board. Dr Monika Gommolla looks back on the

beginnings of the company with grati-tude, commenting that “it was the first step on a sometimes rocky road to suc-cess that every Maritim employee can rightly be proud of.” She was not born into this task, and yet, after studying law and for her doctorate, she decided against academia, instead getting in-volved in the hotel group. What tipped the scales? The answer comes quickly: “there can’t possibly be a nicer work-ing environment,“ she says with a smile. “Great atmosphere, perfect location, ex-cellent restaurants and interesting guests – what workplace could be better than a Maritim Hotel?” The wide-ranging field of activity and the practical relevance make her “simply happy”. Great signs for a further 50 years of success.

Pioneer with vision

More than two decades since his death, the spirit of the founder still shapes the company. Every employee, from trainee to general manager, can recite Gommolla‘s motto in his sleep: “The guest is the most important person in the company.” At first, the business-man had nothing to do with hotels. As co-owner of one of the world‘s leading woodworking machinery companies, he was involved in the development and commercialisation of chipboard, which brought great commercial success in the post-war period. Gommolla invest-ed the money earned in real estate that he built with a local architecture firm and then resold. As a result of his distinct business savvy, paired with the “economic miracle“ of the 1960s, the initially private real es-

Once again, the forceful entrepreneur had the right nose for the industry. His vision “day-time business and overnight accommo-dation under one roof ” met the needs of the market. His track record is easy to see with thousands of employment and training positions tracing back to the company founder’s initiative. In the meantime, he managed to firmly estab-lish Maritim – one of the best-known German hotel chains – in the market. Hans-Joachim Gommolla was born in 1921 in Cottbus. 1. Reliability and trust – two con-stants throughout my 17-year tenure as CFO at Maritim and which can no longer be taken for granted in today’s financial sector. I have therefore always valued working for a family-run business.

2. It gives me great pleasure to play a part in ensuring Maritim’s solid position and growth as a privately-run company in a tough competitive envi-ronment. I have been helping to steer Maritim’s course for almost 25 years; initially in financial controlling and then as a director. This will continue to be my task in the future, but I see this more as a huge opportunity than as a challenge.

3. We will continue to be renowned throughout Germany and the rest of the world for our premium hotels and outstanding meeting and events facilities. We will further enhance this image with superb properties such as the Maritim Hotel Amsterdam, which is currently being developed, and this will be very good for business, which is especially important to me, of course, as the man in charge of finances. We will, therefore, be in a position to drive forward the extremely positive perfor-mance of recent years.

1. First and foremost, I value the creative freedom. Technological advances and digitisation are bringing extremely rapid transformation to marketing and sales in particular. It is therefore crucially important to allow the space for innovation, for new solu-tions to be created and tried out – and then make rapid, innovative decisions to optimise our processes.

2. The challenge I see lies in har-nessing the new opportunities provided by digitisation in order to exploit their full potential, without neglecting the need to treat each guest as an individ-ual. Maritim’s core competence has always been its high-quality, custom-er-focused service and we will continue to maintain those standards. At the same time, technological advances will enable us to further improve and sim-plify communications with guests and our distribution. For us, innovation goes hand in hand with the tried-and-tested approach.

3. While it might sound rather tech-nical, I see Maritim as a process-opti-mised family business. But this should definitely be understood in emotional terms because this is how Maritim will safeguard its strong position in the hotel industry’s digital future. We be-lieve it is extremely important to take responsibility and have a sustainable approach in respect of our employees and our guests. Over the next five to ten years, I am certain that we will have made further significant strides and will be a highly successful player in the market as a privately-run German hotel chain.

Hendrik Förster (54)Chief Financial Officer at

Maritim Hotels since 2001

Roland Elter (46) Chief Operating Officer for Sales and Mar-

keting at Maritim Hotels since March 2018

Erik van Kessel (56)Chief Operating Officer and Labour Rela-

tions Director at Maritim Hotels since 2018

1. Optimum decision-making and excellent relations with our employees. In the hotel industry, it is especially important to treat each other with respect and understanding. Guests pick up on a positive atmosphere. It is the only way to provide a truly outstand-ing service. In more than 30 years working in the sector, this is something that I have experienced time and again.

2. To continually maintain this excellent standard of service and quality and to expand it further. The shortage of skilled workers is certainly a challenging issue for the industry – though I am fairly relaxed about it because Maritim is one of the best training providers in the hotel industry and has a fantastic reputation in the sector. Digitisation is also sure to have a big impact on us but, to my mind, it offers huge opportunities – to simplify and improve our communications with guests and to cement our position as the premium provider of conference and event facilities.

3. Maritim Hotels will continue to be defined by its high-quality service and the in-depth training it gives new entrants to the hotel and restaurant industries. Our hotel chain will expand to include some outstanding new hotels and will maintain its top rating in the premium hotel industry. In the conference and events business, we will provide state-of-the-art technology and further enhance our leading position as Germany’s largest provider of meet-ing and conference facilities. Maritim is well prepared for the future.

“I really value working for a

family-run business.”

Rapid action Bonn: Everyone knows that it takes nine months to bring a child into the world. Building a huge hotel from start to finish in just nine months is also a proud achievement. Maritim’s in-house architectural firm Reinhardt and Sander did just that on the banks of the Rhine. The Maritim Hotel Bonn opened in 1989 and soon entered the Guinness Book of Records as the fastest hotel build of its size. Incidentally: it took twice as long to carry out renovation work on the hotel, which was completed last year and included all 410 rooms/suites and 16 event rooms.

Meeting at the airportDusseldorf: With 533 rooms and suites, 33 meeting rooms, 6 restaurants and bars, there is no larger conference hotel in the whole of North Rhine-Westphalia. Furthermore, the Maritim Hotel Düsseldorf ’s convenient location right next to Düsseldorf Airport makes it the ideal venue for large interna-tional events. Once guests have landed, it is just a short hop to the hotel. Moreover, with its spacious spa, relaxation is also guaranteed.

Reaching new heightsUlm: Municipal building regulations dictated that Maritim could not build horizontally in the Danube town and instead had to stack its room capacity, resulting in the 16 floors that make up the hotel. When it opened in 1988, the Maritim Ulm was fêted as the town’s tallest building. From the top, guests can savour the view of the fabulous Ulm Minster while enjoying a delicious meal. The minster can be reached quickly and easily on foot along the banks of the Danube.

Faster, higher, stronger: Maritim has made the Olympic motto its personal

mission. Over the last 50 years, the company has set numerous records.

Here is just a selection.

Simply outstanding!

An outstanding feat of architectural design: the Y Towers in Amsterdam.

A construction period of just nine months: the Maritim Hotel Bonn.

34 floorsAmsterdam: Maritim now holds no fewer than three records in the Dutch metropolis, Amsterdam. The Maritim Hotel in Amsterdam is currently under construction, but when completed it will be the Group’s largest hotel (579 rooms and suites) and the largest conference hotel in the Netherlands (with a capacity of up to 4,750 people). In addition, the 34-storey modern hotel tower dominates the city’s skyline. The hotel expects to welcome its first guests to enjoy the magnificent views of the romantic old town in 2021.

The best in Lower SaxonyHanover: In the capital of Lower Saxony, Maritim can boast the region’s largest conference hotel. International and political conferences, conventions and expert symposia can be accommodated in 16 event rooms and 10 conference suites. Furthermore, the link to the airport makes the Maritim Airport Hotel Hannover attractive for individual travellers wishing to start or finish off their holiday with a night in a hotel. The 527 rooms and suites open onto an airy lobby where guests can relax, dine, meet or work quietly on their laptops.

The anniversary mug An exclusive design and a limited edition: the Maritim jubilee mug for takeaway hot drinks will only be available during the anniversary year. A lovely reminder of relaxing days spent at Maritim Hotels and perhaps a rare collector’s item one day. But

that is not all. Guests who purchase the high-quality porcelain mug from the hotel reception are also doing some good. That is because,

for every mug sold, Maritim will do-nate 50 cents to the SOS Children’s Village charity. What is more, each time the mug is refilled with coffee or tea, a further 50 cents will go into the Children’s Village coffers. It just so hap-pens that the cheerful design was cre-ated by Maritim project manager Eva Baumgarten, whose work in the marke-ting department is helping to make the anniversary initiatives a success.

The anniversary cocktailWhich is the winning recipe? All Maritim bar teams were invited to take part in an in-house competition to come up with an iconic anniversary cocktail. And the winner is … the team from Stuttgart. Congratulations! This delicious anniversary cocktail will go down a treat in all Maritim bars throughout the year – though perhaps only this year.

Seasonal delicaciesTrying to find the jubilee delicacies among the rest of the spread at Maritim’s signature breakfast buffet is a bit like an Easter-egg hunt. Delicious smoothies perhaps, or freshly-made pancakes with syrup. These tasty little extras will be available all year round, but the choice will vary and will not be announced in advance. Prepare to be surprised!

Food, then and nowTastes change over time. People ate differently 50 years ago, with diets containing more fat, flour and sugar.

Nevertheless, some of the older recipes have stood the test of time (although they tend to be lighter these days). To mark the anniversary, Maritim asked its head chefs about the dishes that have remained favourites with guests over the years. During the anniversary year, these dishes will feature on the menu in every Maritim Hotel in Germany. The “Madagascar-style beaf fillet in green pepper gravy with French beans and potatoes au gratin” proved to be a timeless classic. This popular meat dish was first served to guests in 1970, the same year in which vol-au-vents filled with ragout fin and hollandaise sauce also made it onto guests’ plates. A decade later, steak tartare and beef

roulades appeared on the menu, while the highly sought-after “Pan-fried sole” was introduced in 1990. As the 2000s began, an in-house creation turned out to be a real winner: the “Maritim burger with Homestyle fries”. Guests order this small, simple dish more often than anything else. It tastes especially good when paired with a glass of wine or a beer in a Maritim bar. Vegetarians were certainly not catered for. It has to be said that meat-free cuisine, if available at all, had a very minor part to play 50 years ago. All that has changed. Diners have been able to order “vegan tomato lasagne” in Maritim restaurants since 2010. Whatever you fancy, go ahead and enjoy it!

“Mmmm, delicious,” say the guests, much to the organiser’s delight, clocking up yet another saving! When you book a full-day conference package, Maritim provides free cake as an extra perk. Who could possibly refuse? Another reason to be cheer-ful: with the anniversary discount, conference costs are reduced by 3.50 € per delegate.

Maritim Hotel Stuttgart“In guest evaluations, our friendliness and helpfulness get lots of points,” says Alexander Buck, General Manager of the largest Maritim Hotel in Germany. With 555 rooms and suites, it is also the largest hotel in Stuttgart, resulting in a fittingly complex renovation. The park and business wings were completely refurbished. Guests are par-

ticularly impressed by the new rooms with their stylish bathrooms that feature highly polished natural stone, lots of glass and the latest technology. The hotel’s location on the edge of the city centre is also a hit. There’s plenty of entertainment to be found just a short walk away on lively Königsstrasse, while guests can sleep peacefully in their hotel rooms overlooking the idyllic Hoppenlau Park.

A complete overhaul: once the decision is made to renovate a Maritim Hotel, the costs can run into the millions. Full-scale improvement work is the order of the day:

laying new carpets, repapering the walls, replacing the furniture and updating the technology. Anke Schneider has taken a look.

Beige and anthracite define the new-look of Maritim Hotel on Goethestrasse, within easy reach of the centre. The old floral designs have been replaced by geometric patterns. The tone is set by the narrow stripes and delicate squares on the new carpets, which were specially woven for the Munich Hotel. The most significant change can be seen in the re-ception area. The lobby, piano bar and the light and airy conservatory – a meet-ing room prior to the refurbishment but now transformed into a stylish restaurant with views over the surrounding greenery – flow seamlessly into each other. This open use of space goes down well with guests, enticing them to stay awhile and take in the lively comings and goings all around. Meanwhile, the kitchen provides snacks or full meals as required.

Maritim Hotel DarmstadtWhen the Darmstadt hotel opened in 1981, sombre colours were all the rage. These days, people prefer things light and bright. The ceilings are now white, additional lighting creates an

When people think of Maritim, they usually think about the hotel business; the hotels they like to stay in or the room they have just booked. Not many people know that other compa-nies also form part of the Maritim Group. Some of these work behind the scenes, while others are customer-facing, but they all contribute to the well-being of the guests. The anniversary

provides an ideal opportunity to showcase what they do.

A n all-in-one service: this sums up the Maritim Group’s approach to quality and service; one that provides customers with a wealth of useful facilities

and services to complement their hotel stay. In the hotels, it starts in the morning with Maritim’s unparalleled signature breakfast buffet. It continues in the hotel restaurants, which provide a culinary smorgasbord of regional and international specialities. After a busy day of business or sightseeing, guests can relax in the exclusive beauty and spa facilities or leave the everyday world behind for a while by the pool, in the sauna or by indulging in one of the many treatments available. Last but not least, Maritim’s welcoming bars have an almost legendary reputation as the ideal place to unwind and enjoy the perfect end to the day.

Building Maritim Hotels: Reinhardt & SanderMaritim operates 32 hotels in Germany. Most of them were built by the company’s own architectural firm, Reinhardt & Sander. The company founder Hans-Joachim Gommolla, who

knew a thing or two about real estate, understood the advantag-es of having an in-house construction company. Their detailed knowledge of the company’s requirements ensures that the ho-tels are optimally tailored to the needs of the guests. Because the work is tightly organised, the in-house company can complete the build more quickly and therefore more cost-effectively than a third-party. Reinhardt and Sander manages the entire process, from the initial concept right up to the hotel being open for busi-ness. The company’s own interior architects collaborate closely with company management during the interior design process

and consult them on the choice of furniture, carpets, curtains and wall coverings. This ensures that guests find the same sophis-ticated and enduring style whichever Maritim Hotel they visit. In the hotel foyers, polished granite flooring gleams, offset by sparkling glass and brass elements.

Enjoy your holiday from day one: the Maritim Hotel-ReisedienstIn a first for the travel industry, in 1981 Maritim took the de-cision to found its own travel agency, which was authorised to issue a full range of train and plane tickets. This courage was rewarded and Maritim guests very soon began entrusting their travel plans to the Maritim Hotel-Reisedienst. Many custom-ers now turn to the skills of our travel experts as a matter of course when arranging a holiday in one of Maritim’s hotels abroad. The Reisedienst (travel service) tracks down conven-ient flights, books tickets, makes room reservations, organises transfers and ensures that special requests are catered for. In addition to bringing individual travel plans to fruition, the Maritim Hotel-Reisedienst also arranges its own packages.

The “Maritim Package Holidays” brochure has something for every kind of holidaymaker, from weekend trips and beach and activity holidays to cruises in some of the most beautiful places on earth. The “Maritim Music Trips” brochure pro-vides an overview of all the tours available to lovers of culture. Beyond the offers associated with Maritim Hotels, the travel experts can also cater for all other types of holiday. Cruise packages are enjoying particularly strong growth at present. The service of Maritim Hotel-Reisedienst is only available in German-speaking countries.

Maritim Hotels are built more quickly and cheaply by the company’s in-house architectural firm and are perfectly tailored to guests’ requirements.

Exclusive experiences: The Maritim catering serviceThe days are filled with meetings and conferences, but what can delegates do in the evening? Event organisers frequently request exclusive experiences away from the hotel. This is where Maritim catering comes in. The team from this corporate division knows all the best places to relax or have a party and then spoils the guests with culinary delights ranging from sophisticated finger food to four-course fine dining. More than 200 locations pro-vide the ideal setting for exceptional experiences. Seamless, stress-free meetings with the Maritim conference serviceA glance at the figures makes it clear: with over 600 event rooms available in the 32 German hotels and the 12 hotels abroad, Maritim Hotels is head and shoulders above the rest of Germany’s private conference providers. Not just in terms of venues. The Maritim conference service channels its wealth of expertise into sophisticated events management. This includes dedicated assis-tance from a contact person before, during and after the confer-ence, as well as the provision of conference technology tailored to

the specific needs of the event. This combination of the perfect package and the highest professional standards makes Maritim the preferred partner for political, business and corporate confer-ence planners.

A wonderful place to tee off: the Maritim Golfpark OstseeThe Maritim Golfpark Ostsee enjoys an idyllic setting in the unique protected area of outstanding natural beauty at Lake Hemmelsdorf. The facility consists of three 9-hole courses which players are free to combine as they wish. There is something to challenge both novices and experienced players at the course designed by the golf-course architect Christoph Städler. Owner-ship of the year-round venue is divided between Maritim and the Maritim Golfpark Ostsee AG shareholders, who are permitted to acquire further shares. The various forms of membership offered by Maritim make it ideal for golfers who want to remain flexible. In addition to distance membership for those who live more than 200 kilometres from the course, an attractive trial membership and a 9-hole lake course membership are also available. While some of the corporate divisions mentioned above do not celebrate their own anniversaries this year, they nonetheless share in the collective success of the group in this anniversary year. “Together we are strong”: this maxim for life can also be applied to the Maritim Group.

Maritim music trips have been incredibly popular for a number of years. Lovers of culture love having the opportunity to attend first-class opera performances and concerts while being completely spoilt by Maritim. Here, we’ve picked out a few examples from our extensive offer.

Candidates need to exude a “zest for life” and see themselves as the “hoteliers of the future”. In our interview with Stefan Kersten, Head of Human Resources at Maritim, he outlines the training application process, Maritim’s expectations and the opportunities

the company can offer young people.

A partnership approach to training

Stefan KerstenHead of Human Resources at Maritim

Maritim Journal: Mr Kersten, are you currently looking to recruit trainees?

Stefan Kersten: Yes, and we are taking a very focused ap-proach. Maritim is represented at job and training fairs. Our taster days and school and long-term placements provide the

opportunity to find out more about working in our hotels. Modern media has an increasingly important role to play. We communicate with young people in the places where they spend their free time; in other words, through social networking plat-forms. We put our new recruitment film out on YouTube, Ins-tagram and Facebook and we are very pleased with the number of clicks. Nevertheless, no-one should underestimate the power of word of mouth: many young people come to us on the back of recommendations from friends, teachers or family members. There is no doubt that being voted best training provider for the second time by the business magazine “Capital” also helps.

Maritim Journal: What characteristics does a young person need if they want to train at Maritim?

Stefan Kersten: Having a zest for life is the most important thing these days. We are trying to find the “hoteliers of the

future” and are looking for “rough diamonds”; in other words, we are looking for potential to develop, not the best academic record. It goes without saying that our future trainees should like going to great hotels and have a passion for food and drink, as well as enjoy being around other people.

Maritim Journal: How does the application process work?

Stefan Kersten: Young people tend to apply online these days, which is fairly unconventional. The key requirements are a CV, a brief letter of application, school reports and a photo. Shortly after submitting their application, candidates will be invited to an interview. After that, many prospective trainees attend taster days, which allow them to see what the business is really like. If both sides agree, a training contract is ar-ranged.

Maritim Journal: How is the training programme organised?

Stefan Kersten: The training programme follows regulations set down by the IHK (German Chamber of Commerce) and consists of a proven framework and defined structures. In ad-dition, there are provisions within the training brochure and e-learning programmes that we have developed ourselves. In each of our hotels, we have a wealth of IHK-certified trainers and an HR department to mentor our trainees. Our train-ers work with the human resources managers to develop the trainees’ strengths, focusing on their personal and professional development.

Maritim Journal: Does Maritim encourage trainees to take part in contests?

Stefan Kersten: Trainees are free to enter any contest they wish. They are therefore given time slots in which to prepare and receive intensive guidance from our hotels. This certain-ly goes a long way toward explaining why Maritim trainees regularly appear in state championships, German Youth Championships and special contests and are awarded first prize. Our own trainee championships are a real highlight of the contests.

Maritim Journal: What is the role of placements abroad?

Stefan Kersten: Our establishments participate in the Erasmus programme, which enables our trainees to complete a foreign placement as part of their training. As a company, we benefit from the ideas and experiences that the trainees gain.

Maritim Journal: What makes training at Maritim special?

Stefan Kersten: The fact that we have 50 years of experience in the business certainly puts us at an advantage. We are passionate about training, in combination with experience and accountability. We appreciate the value of the dual training programme and pro-vide ongoing investment for it here. Our training stands out due to its breadth, which is something that can only be offered by hotels with the wide range of services that we provide. Our trainees learn about all aspects of the holiday and conference hotel business.

Maritim Journal: Has the training programme changed over the last 50 years?

Stefan Kersten: We now treat our trainees as equals. They are valued partners. The learning methodologies are more closely aligned with the training curriculum and are more complex. Of course, modern communication methods come into play now too, but here at Maritim, our training programme will always prioritise our guests and the development of our trainees.

Maritim Journal: What makes the hospitality sector such an attractive profession?

Stefan Kersten: The varied jobs, the international teams, the positive vibe within the sector, the opportunities to work through-out the world, great career development and, last but not least, a secure job. The hospitality industry offers a lot of freedom and new developments. There is nothing to stand in the way of your career or your independence.

Maritim Journal: Many thanks for the interview, Mr Kersten.

The interview was conducted by Claudia Ehry.

The best of the bestProfessional training is an investment for life. Maritim takes this responsibility

seriously and achieves successful outcomes, with Maritim Hotel trainees regularly being awarded first place in professional contests.

Two recent winners tell us their story.

Madlen Gießelmann (22)Front Office Manager, Maritim Hotel Bad

Salzuflen, originally from Herford, GermanyState champion for Ostwestfalen-Lippe

I was fascinated by hotels from an early age. I dreamt of owning my own hotel when I grew up. I first came across Maritim at the Herford careers fair. I had successfully completed Year 10 and was looking for a work experience place-ment. The only hotel at the fair was the Maritim Hotel Bad Salzuflen. I enjoyed their presentation and it wasn’t long before I was given a work placement, which later led to a part-time job. After finishing my A-Levels, I was certain that I wanted to train as a front office manager. I have never once regretted that decision. I thoroughly enjoyed my three-year traineeship, which I complet-ed last winter. I worked in housekeep-ing, the food & beverage division, at reception, in the banquet team and in the kitchen. I found all of it interesting and learned a great deal. I liked the fact that, as trainees, we were able to say where we would like to gain experience and that we were given the chance to do so whenever possible. That’s how I

also got to learn how an events office operates. All in all, we were very well looked after. Shortly after our training began, we were entrusted with our own responsibilities. I worked the late shift on my own during my time at reception. However, nobody was just thrown in at the deep end; someone always took us by the hand and gradually introduced us to our new roles. The idea of taking part in the Lippe youth championships for restaurant managers, hoteliers and chefs came about at college. One of the teachers encouraged the whole class to take part, saying, “You are good, you can do it.” I realised I had nothing to lose and decided to get involved. I passed the theoretical component, which requires you to present suggestions for menus and demonstrate your knowledge of cleaning and safety procedures and progressed to the practical element. Professional training is an investment for life. Maritim takes this responsi-bility seriously and achieves successful

outcomes, with Maritim Hotel trainees regularly being awarded first place in professional contests. In the meantime, I was able to prepare for the contest at the hotel and was very well supported. For instance, I practised the professional way to open wine bottles and gained insights into oenology. The day of the contest finally arrived. I was nervous because I wanted to do well. The theme for the contest was “A day’s walking in the Lippe area”. Our tasks includ-ed setting a table, arranging flowers, designing a menu and handling difficult conversations at the reception desk. We were also put through our paces about our knowledge of merchandise and the proper techniques for serving guests. It was challenging and we all breathed a sigh of relief when the testing came to an end at lunchtime. During the after-noon, when I discovered I had won the contest, I was proud and happy. I felt it validated my choice of career and I knew I was on the right track.

Maritim trains the professionals

Kitchen, restaurant, hotel: if you would like to train for a role in the hospital-ity sector, then Maritim has the right training programme for you. Our lively video at karriere.maritim.de/de/karriere-ausbildung will make you want to join our young team.

Last summer, I completed my training as a chef at the Maritim Hotel Bremen. I received such excellent mentoring and guidance during the entire traineeship that I qualified to take part in the Ger-man Youth Championships for hote-liers, restaurant managers and chefs. The regional champions from each of the German states, as well as from the Ostwestfalen-Lippe district, were com-peting against each other. In October, when I joined up with a small group of hopefuls in Berlin at the IHK facility where the Youth Championships are usually held, I was well-prepared for the contest. I had spent three months trai-ning at college and at home in my free time and I was able to polish my per-formance at the hotel. I had therefore already laid the groundwork for a good outcome in Berlin. Despite this, I never really thought that I’d be placed in the top three, as it had been many years since there had been a winner from

Henrik Rohde (23)Demi Chef de Partie,

3rd place in the German Youth Championships

Bremen. On top of that, I had to pit my wits against no fewer than 16 other con-testants. But it all went very well. I pas-sed the theoretical exam on the first day with no problem. This involved ans-wering technical questions, identifying products and solving maths problems. Nevertheless, I was really nervous the next morning because, depending on the situation, a lot that can go wrong with the practical element of the test. My task was to make a four-course meal for ten people. Each course had to incorporate a specified ingredient. The starter had to include quail and poularde breast. The examiner wanted to see me handle oxtail for the soup course. Veal loin was to take centre stage in the main course and the dessert had to contain honey. I had no shorta-ge of ideas. I immediately thought of creamy Greek yoghurt as the perfect accompaniment for honey. I therefore created a yoghurt foam to garnish my

honey pastry, which I served alongside a walnut crumble and raspberry sorbet – a trio of desserts on one plate, which is standard these days in premium gastronomy. I had six hours in which to complete the task. I coped with the pressure and focused on the job in hand. My thorough training had given me the confidence I needed. However, my workspace was a real challenge. It was a tiny workstation, with just two hotplates and an oven. Fortunately, we had been shown the examination room on the previous day, so I had been able to mentally prepare myself for the lack of space. The awards ceremony, which took place later at the luxury “Adlon” hotel, made up for it. I was absolutely delighted to discover that I was one of the winners. It was a fantastic experien-ce and I am very grateful to Maritim for the first-class training I received here at the hotel in Bremen.

1. The most famous guest at the Wuerzburg Residence was Napoleon. In fact, the French emperor and Bavarian ally stayed at the Baroque palace designed by Balthasar Neumann and seat of the Wuerzburg prince-bishops on three occasions. He visit-ed Grand Duke Ferdinand in 1806, 1812 and 1813, and was accommodated appropriately in the present-day “Napoleon Room”.

2. When locals speak of “Langer Eugen”, they are referring to the former parliament building dating from Bonn’s time as the seat of the Federal Government. History was writ-ten in the protected historic building under the tenure of the Federal chancellors Willy Brandt, Helmut Schmidt and Helmut Kohl.

4. Dinosaurs have left their mark in Hanover. Three years ago, palaeontologists discov-ered the huge markings (up to 1.2 metres long and 43 centimetres deep) of around 90 ancient creatures in a quarry near the city. www.dinopark.de

5. Kiel and the Kiel Week Regatta are one and the same. With around 4,000 yachts-men and women from over 60 countries, the annual regatta is the world’s largest sailing event. With three million visitors and 2,000 individual events, it is also the largest sum-mer festival in Northern Europe.

6. Erich Kästner, born in the Neustadt area of Dresden in 1899, gives an account of his memories in his autobiography “When I was a little boy”.
