A1 DESIGN FUTURINGZero/Fold ScreenThe Zero/Fold Screen is designed to be a light-filtering screen for Kasian Gallery, University of Calgary, Cana-da. Instead of subordinating the material sheet size to the end of the design process and resulting in inevitable waste, the project starts from the basic material dimensions, generating a series of components that will min-imize material waste during CNC cutting while creating un undulating screen in the gallery. This features the value of design futuring, which helps to retard the extravagant waste and defuturing development.

What is notable about the design is the use of local and recycled materials, which has been maximised to curtail the embodied energy of the building. The undulating north facade is clad with shingles manu-factured from the discarded tiers, which were reclaimed from the river, the park grounds and other local sources. This enhances the reuse of resources and removes waste from the river. Also, compared to other solutions, this de-sign features lower embodied energy, transportation costs and maintenance expenditure. This applauds the value of design futuring, which aims to go against the accelerating defuturing condition of unsustainability and waste.

The Shellstar Pavilion, which is a temporary structure for an art and design festival in Hong Kong, can be an example of computational design. The computer soft wares including rhino, grasshopper and kangaroo are utilized form the initial design stage in order to maximize the spatial performance while minimizing the struc-tural and material demands. The form emerged out of a digital form-finding process and self-organizes into the catenary-like thrust surfaces that are aligned with the structural vectors and allow for minimal structural depth.

A2 COMPUTATIONAL DESIGNShellstar PavilionShellstar Pavilion In the initial design stage, the geometry and

main fiber bundle locations are produced by a computational form finding method, integrating fabrication constraints and structural simula-tion in the developed design stage afterwards. Furthermore, a prototypical robotic fabrication process was developed, leading to a complete-ly digital construction process. Therefore, all design processes have been integrated, which applauds the virtue of computational design.
