Entry 1“Retailers Cautious over Holiday Outlook.”

The article discusses how retailers are anticipating the holiday shopping season and how it will affect seasonal workers.

The article discusses how Macy’s and Kohl’s will be hiring around the same number of seasonal workers, but other companies are a more timid approach. Companies such as target is projected to hire about 20,000 less season employees this holiday season. Consumers are said to be less confident in making purchases this year and retailers do not want to be stuck with excess inventory. Sales promotions are suggested to be at an all time high this holiday season to bring in lots of shoppers. This decline in sales is hitting all types of department stores; all the way from JCPenny, and Sears to Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Ave. Lastly, the article talks about how the decline in disposable income and the possible government shutdown situation have both stunted the growth of retail sales. More people are buying what they need versus what they want.

On September 17, 2013 Forbes released and article stating Michael Kors stock is on the rise. Throughout the article, KORS stock is compared to Fastenal. KORS stock moved up in the market cap rank, passing Fastenal. Fastenal is an industrial supply company. Forbes stated, “In the latest look at stocks ordered by largest market capitalization, Russell 3000 component Michael Kors Holdings Ltd. was identified as having a larger market cap than the smaller end of the S&P 500, for example Fastenal Co.”

I think Michael Kors is becoming so popular and in demand because he speaks to so many different types of people. He has something for everyone. Whether you’re a young, middle aged, or older, even male or female, he has something for you. He also is in high demand in the “high fashion” industry while being very in demand in the “mass market” industry. His success is now showing through stock prices and he is now on the rise. He has created an empire and this article just validates that even more.

This season (Fall 2014) brides are moving back toward traditional dresses, but still taking a little risk. According to the article there are three specific trends brewing amongst the bridal industry. The first trend is the “smoke” or grey colored dress. This trend is supposedly the new alternative to wearing white on your big day. The next new trend is a cap lace sleeve. Giving the bride freedom to move but still adding a traditional lace look. Lastly, the third trend is shorter hemlines. This is so the bride can showcase a fabulous pair of shoes.

One observation I have made about fall 2013 women’s apparel is that winter white is back. I feel as if women have been scared to wear white during the fall and winter over the past couple of seasons, but fall 2013 changed everything. From the runway to the streets, I have seen winter white being worn daily. From jeans with white blazers, to full white suits, to white accessories such as heels, scarfs and purses, winter white has definitely made its presence known this season.

Entry #5While I was at Express, I noticed that their store was broken down into three parts. The entrance of the store had the newest product and the stuff that was most trendy. For example, they had their sparkly holiday dresses and shirts in the front of the store, as soon as you walked in, you saw sparkle and high-shine. In the entrance I also saw lots of sweaters. As I kept walking toward the back, the store changed to a more everyday wear, such as jeans blazers and business- wear. The colors were deep, rich fall colors. Such as burgundy, browns, and olive green. Also, the color blue seemed to be across the store in many shades…especially denim blue! Lastly, when I got to the back, it was mostly clearance and sale merchandise. Some apparel from their summer lines that haven’t sold yet.

In the “What’s in store” section of WGSN, many of the trends that I talked about above were mentioned in their articles. For example, WGSN said the color blue was very in, a variety if hue’s a trending throughout retailers. Also, another trench WGSN talked about is, textures and patterns. High-shine and textures such a detailed sequins is trending.

Lastly, WGSN talks about denim and how detailed jeans are becoming.

According to WGSN, in the Chinese and Korean fashion industry, plaid knits for younger girls are becoming popular. A big trend in Copenhagen is incorporating outwear into everyday street wear. Lastly, in Sweden they’re adding more geometrical shapes into their apparel. I see all three of these trends already in the USA. The most prominent trends is the plaid knit and incorporating sport wear. That is seen everywhere in the US. The geometric shapes, hasn’t fully engulfed the US market yet, in my opinion.

The first retail store I picked was Zara. I love how Zara outfits their merchandise all throughout the store. In this picture you see tops, bottoms, jackets and accessories that all go together. It is basically showing the customer how to shop, I love it! Zara does this all throughout there stores, no matter the season or collection. This outfitting is consistent in Zara stores.

Page 16: Journal

The next retail store I choose was The Buckle. I like how the buckle divides their store by brand and jean fit. The buckle is known for their jeans and each table has a certain brand jean, along with similar fits. The tops of the tables have mannequins that display a certain jean with a matching shirt and over piece that are on the table. The Buckle outfits throughout their store just like Zara, although I think Zara is a bit more organized and they carry a different style of clothes.

A TV show that I have found very influential to trends and trend setting is “Keeping up with the Kardashians.” Although this is a reality TV show, the Kardashians have a huge following and really make an impact on what people want to wear and buy. I think they debut what is coming in season on their shows and really show what pieces, fabrics and textures are in style for that season. The Kardashians have also gained credibility and fans by launching their clothing line, despite some people bad attitude toward them, saying “they are famous for no reason”, they have quite an impact on the fashion industry and have created an empire.

Dennis Basso - Ready-to-Wear - Bridal Collection - WomenFall / Winter 2013

I think a retailer that might include Dennis Basso’s beautiful bridal collection is a retailer like “House of

Page 19: Journal

Brides” or a bridal boutique. Something not too generic, but still accessible to the common bride. I love this designs bodes, and the neck-line. The dress flares out at a flattering point on the body and would look fabulous on a variety of body types. The ruffles on the skirt are also beautiful. They are not too pronounced but you can still tell they are there. Also, the train is a great length. Lastly, I love the color of the dress; a traditional white is always perfect on your wedding day.

Entry #12A fashion Designer is someone who creates clothing and/or accessories from start to finish. The designer creates the article of clothing from inspiration, picks the color and fabrics and lays out all of the details, and then creates more pieces to finish an entire collection.

A buyer is someone who goes to fashion shows, trade shows, etc and picks apparel for a certain store that fits the stores target market and will profit the company the most. Buyers have to know who the stores audience is and what their average price range and style is in order to appeal to the customers the most.

A product development manager creates a plan of action and time frame for all product development. They oversee and help create inspiration boards, and make sure inspiration of products come together on time. A Product development manager makes sure all products are approved and sampled on time as well.

4 fashion don’ts

1. Don’t layer-up too much.

Page 21: Journal

-Layering makes you look bigger than you really are.

2. Don’t barley wear clothes at all-i.e. Miley Cyrus- It Just looks trashy and leaves nothing to the Imagination.

3. Don’t mix too many different patterns and prints

Page 22: Journal

- You’ll end up distracting your actually outfit and give who looks at you a headache.

4. Don’t wear furry boots (i.e. UGGS0 with a short summer dress

it looks like you don’t know what season you’re in.

The three careers I see myself doing in the future are, a buyer, a stylist or a fashion show coordinator. A buyer, is someone who goes to trade shows, trunk shows and fashion shows and picks certain clothing for a specific retailer. The buyer has to know the retails audience very well so that they can buy clothes that appeal to the stores target market the best. A good buyer is highly responsible for the profits a retailer makes. A stylist is someone who has great connections with people in the fashion industry and certain retailers so that they can get clothes from them for certain events and shoots. A stylist picks clothes and accessories for a person or group of people, for a photo-shoot, an event or even everyday life. Stylists are used often and must always be networking. Lastly, a fashion show coordinator puts together a fashion show for a designer or company. The coordinator is in-charge of all the small details to the big details from start to finish. They are there to create a “look” for the designer and makes sure everything goes smoothly.

I think I would be good at a buyer position because I am good with finances and I would be able to get to know the retailer target market and profit the retailer. I also think I would be a great stylist because I have a good sense of what pieces go with what and I love to network. I love to talk and develop relationships with people. Lastly, I would make a great fashion show coordinator because I am very good with time management and have great organizational skills. In the future I think I will be happy and successful at any of these jobs.
