Ohiyesa went to great lengths to assimilate to white culture and become Charles Eastman. He was forced to pick a white name, wear white clothes, and cut his hair as the white men did. He was taught by the schools of the white men and told to speak the way they did too. Though he assimilated well, after a while it was forced and wrong. Ohiyesa became Charles Eastman after spending a long time in the white culture.

Cartoon Analysis
“A cartoonist is a writer and artist, philosopher, and punster, cynic and community conscience. He seldom tells a joke, and often tells the truth, which is funnier… He is also a reporter and historian…”

Being a muckraker, step 1
• Read the “No Survivors Found After West Virginia Mine Disaster” article (read-aloud)
• In your comp book, summarize the key points of the article in 3-5 bullet points
Being a muckraker, step 2
• You will receive either article 2 or article 3 to read on your own.
• Write the title of the article you read and summarize the key points the article is making in 3-5 bullet points.
Being a muckraker, step 3• Remember, muckrakers drew attention to social

• Create a detailed, 1-panel political cartoon that reflects the key ideas from the two articles you read. Be sure to include labels, captions, and a title. It should be clear when viewing your finished cartoon what your message is and what you learned about the Massey mining disaster.
Things you need to include:
• Context: The cartoon should reflect the complexities and controversies surrounding our topic.
• Caption: The title and/or caption should provide a clear verbal cue about the meaning of the cartoon and it clearly relates to the issue
• Design: Cartoon is carefully designed so that all the elements of the cartoon come together to create a clear message that is easily understood.
