INVESTIGATION INTO BRANDING

LADY GAGA

Page 3: Josie Bury - Investigation into branding

The album cover relates to Lady Gaga’s fan base who she calls ‘Little Monsters’ and that she is the ‘Mother Monster’.

The theme of monsters has expanded rapidly within the style of her music, her videos, her fashion style and the symbolic monster hand sign she uses in performances, this is how her loyal fans greet her and symbolise her.

The fi erce monster facial on the front cover of ‘Born this way’ is similar to the video as she is expressing who she is. As a artist she is a role model to her fan base, she strongly believe in that they should be who they want to be.

SIMILARITIES

For the video of Born This Way she had horn implants in her forehead to again create this Mother Monster character.

Lady Gaga has created a fan base of millions over the past few years and they look up to her as a role model. The facial she uses on the front cover of the album and in the videos is very powerful and god-like, she’s a global superstar and there is no time to smile and be beautiful on the front cover and in her videos. She always creates a statement and gets the world talking.

The conventions of lighting and colour are both very similar in both of the media products. Bold black, is used within a lot of her prints and videos, I believe this creates a mysterious unique touch as she doesn’t like to be in bright lights and pretty dresses. She contrasts against all the other female soloist in the charts and this is what makes her unique.

SIMILARITIES

The Fame Monster is Lady Gaga’s second offi cial album which was

an extended revamped version of ‘The fame’.

This is when the ‘monster’ character began to unravel. The

characteristics and the distinctive pose are sti l l there.

Her style remains unique and bold. The ‘T’ in monster is made

into a cross which was also the beginning of the more conceptual

rel igious (debatable) lyr ics and themes that Lady Gaga begin to create within her music and the

videos causing a lot of controversy.

OTHER ALBUM COVERS

Page 6: Josie Bury - Investigation into branding

I believe that Lady Gaga is in fact a brand herself. Her attitude towards her fans is that they should be

their own and do what makes them happy.Bold, brave, individuality, Unique, Religion, and Peace

are the main aspects within her brand image. Her clothing/costumes can be very revealing and

brave. This is because she has become a global superstar and she creates hype, be it good or bad.

She can break rules and cause a controversy such like ‘The meat dress’ she wore to an award show. She makes front page news around the world, for who she is and what she represents… Not creating bad press falling out of nightclubs.

Controversial

The colour and font type of her album artwork refl ects the artist and her videos.

The black and white contrast is very bold and it stands out from the crowd.

BRAND IMAGE

Lady Gaga’s brand image has made her who she is today. Without the controversial outfi ts and performances such like the recent performance at the VMA awards, where she dressed up and acted as her alter ego male character from her recent You and I video, I don’t believe she would have been as successful around the world.

Her image and style is always expanding and getting bigger and better, this is so she is always the limelight, winning awards and that her fans are continuing to follow her with such passion that they have for her.

WHY?
