Trimming of Trees and Shrubs – Basketball Nets Overhanging onto Streets Residents are asked to trim any trees, shrubs or bushes that may be extend- ing out into a street to include any tree branches that may be hanging over a street and closer than 14 feet from the road surface. Trees and/or bushes that extend onto roadways create problems for emergency vehicles, mail carriers, refuse trucks, delivery vehicles, etc. – so please ensure that your trees and shrubs do not extend into the street and create problems for others. Basketball nets are another item that create similar problems – they cannot be placed in the street or hanging out over the street – please move them. Thank you. Open burning is a controversial topic in many communities across the coun- try. Those who favor burning feel that it is their right to place a burn barrel in their backyard and burn their trash. Those opposed to burning cite envi- ronmental concerns, such as pollution, and health concerns, such as asthma and other respiratory problems, as reasons burning should be banned in a community. Jonestown does permit the use of burn barrels with the following restrictions: No fire shall be started unless confined within a noncombustible contain- er covered with a mesh screening. Such containers should be located 25 feet or more from any building, structure, automobile or any other combustible substance. There is no burning allowed between the hours of 7pm and 7am. The only materials that are allowed to be burned are paper, cardboard and clean, untreated wood. All fires must be attended at all times by a competent person. Fires for cooking and recreational/ceremonial purposes can be started anytime on private property so long as it is properly attended. Moreover, the following facts have been released by the Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania, which you should be aware of while using the burn barrel. • An EPA Study found that a single household burn barrel may release as many toxic chemicals as a large municipal incinerator. • Burning releases at least seven known cancer-causing agents into the air, including one believed to be a major factor in lung cancer. • Products and packages containing vinyl are extremely dangerous when burned. They produce hydrogen chloride gas that combines with water to form hydrochloric acid in human lungs. Burning also produces toxic dioxin chemicals. • Open burning has been linked to a host of health problems, including, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), asthma attacks and other respiratory ailments. • Children are particularly susceptible to the toxins released by burn barrels. They absorb up to six times the amount of byproducts that adults absorb from the same air. Burn Barrels and Open Burning HELP WANTED The Perseverance Fire Company is a 44 member- 100% volunteer organi- zation always in need of new volunteers. Anyone interested in supporting your community can contact any Fire Company member, or simply call the Fire Station at 865-3635. Thank You, Rob Taylor, Fire Chief. Be a Part of Jonestown’s Walk of Honor The Jonestown Walk of Honor is a walkway to honor your Armed Forces Members. The Jonestown American Legion and the Jonestown Lions Club have joined hands in a cooperative effort to construct a “Walk of Honor” at the memorial site, located in the Lutheran Cemetery in Jonestown. The walk will be constructed using bricks engraved with names recognizing those who have served in the armed forces both past and present. If you wish to honor a spouse, rela- tive or friend with an engraved brick, please contact George Kaufman at 717-673-6194 or Ed Spittle, Jr. at 717-644-1325. Summer Heat Health Safety Tip PLEASE never ever leave any person or pet in the car while you run to do a quick errand. Cars become overheated quickly, becoming like ovens. On a day that is just 72 degrees Fahrenheit, the temperature [inside a car] can increase by 30 to 40 degrees in an hour, and 70% of this increase occurs the first 30 minutes. People or pets can succumb to heat exposure and death very quickly in a hot car. Jonestown Borough is happy to announce new cameras have been purchased for the Jonestown Community Park.
