How Changing Weather Affects Cold and Flu Season Changes in the weather is here, bringing with it the cold days and warm days. The best explanation for why these go hand-in-hand isthe decrease in humidity in the atmosphere during this time of year. The lowered humidity levels allow cold and flu virus particles tosurvive at a much higher level, creating more opportunities for exposure to cold and flu viruses. What can you do to keep from getting sick? Try following these simple steps: • Get a flu vaccine each year at the end of September or early October. Every year; • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; • Use alcoholbased sanitizers; • Cover your mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze; • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with your hands; • Stay away from sick people and avoid hand shaking during the flu season; • If you get sick and with a cold or flu, stay at home be considerate to your fellow coworkers. Be sure to sanitize your work area atthe start and end of each day. Remember prevention is the best cure. If you should get sick, see your doctor. Proper treatment can often reduce the length andseverity of your illness.

GENERAL MESSAGE (FEMA ICS FORM 213)
MESSAGE:
Floodwater and standing waters can be dangerous and can make you vulnerable to infectious diseases, chemical hazards, andinjuries. Protect yourself and your fellow employees from the risks brought by floodwater by following these steps.
Floodwater can pose a drowning risk for everyone — regardless of their ability to swim. Swiftly moving shallow water can be deadly, and even shallow standing water can be dangerous. - Always follow warnings about flooded roads. Don’t drive in flooded areas—cars or other vehicles won’t protect you from floodwaters. They can be swept away or may stall inmoving water.
Floodwaters contain many things that may harm health. We don’t know exactly what is in floodwater at any given point in time.Floodwater can contain:
- Downed power lines - Human and livestock waste - Household, medical, and industrial hazardous waste (chemical, biological, and radiological) - Coal ash waste that can contain carcinogenic compounds such as arsenic, chromium, and mercury - Other contaminants that can lead to illness - Physical objects such as lumber, vehicles, and debris - Wild or stray animals such as rodents and snakes
Exposure to contaminated floodwater can cause:
- Wound infections - Skin rash - Gastrointestinal illness - Tetanus - Leptospirosis (not common)
It is important to protect yourself from exposure to floodwater regardless of the source of contamination. The best way to protectyourself is to stay out of the water.
If you come in contact with floodwater:
Wash the area with soap and clean water as soon as possible. If you don’t have soap or water, use alcohol-based wipes orsanitizer. - Take care of wounds and seek medical attention if necessary. - Wash clothes contaminated with flood or sewage water in hot water and detergent before reusing them. ALWAYS REFFER TO YOU DHAP, CAREFUL PREPARATION OF THE DHAP IS VERY IMPORTANT, SUPERVISORS SHOULDREVIEW THE DHAP WITH THEIR WORKERS.

MESSAGE:
Everyone,
1. We (the Federal Partners) are here at the service of the State, Tribes, and all survivors. The State and Tribes will handle thoseissues that are within their area of responsibility and we should never circumvent them. We should look at how we can providebenefit to them as we support the state and their constituency. This is their home and we come and go. We must leave a positiveimprint of FEMA.
2. The safety and accountability of our deployed personnel is paramount to a successful operation. To achieve this, we need allpersonnel assigned to this disaster to check in to the Deployment Tracking System (DTS) no later than 9AM daily. Safety isparamount to protect our most precious resource…you! Please watch out for one another because you are important and we careabout you.
3. Empower your staff – You empower by letting go and demonstrating your trust and confidence to the team. Help them grow andexcel just like someone did for you.
4. You are authorized to find solutions to problems and take ownership of them until there is a resolution. Federal personnel shouldnot say "we don't know" or "that's not my lane." Attention to detail with a quick follow up will pay huge dividends.
5. Strive for Excellence! We need everyone’s assistance to complete this mission so be encouraging and positive.
6. You have my trust until you violate it – Make good decisions on our behalf. If you make an honest mistake don’t fret about it, learnfrom it and move on. Help one another grow and learn and invest back into the agency and our team.
7. Do your personal best – Everybody has good and bad days so focus on the overall effort. No ‘Got You” moments. We needeveryone’s help to complete this mission without fear or intimidation. Be encouraging.
8. Our core values are Compassion, Fairness, Integrity, and Respect. Demonstrate respect and dignity for everyone, internal andexternal, regardless of status, pay, title, etc. Remember, without fail, to treat others how you would like to be treated.

10. Customer Service Own the issue until it’s resolved or transferred to the appropriate person – Utilize exceptional customerservice always which is applied internally and externally. It’s the little things that add up to something great.
