Ponderings of Patience Thinking of “All Saints’ Day” on Sunday, November 1st
One of the great characteristics of our Christian faith is that we believe God chose to make his presence known to humanity in a most intimate and wondrous way – through the earthly presence of his son, Jesus Christ. God in the flesh, so that we humans can experience God up close and personal. What an amazing expression of God’s desire to relate to us! This is succinctly expressed in I John 5:20 (TEV):
We know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we know the true God. We live in union with the true God – in union with his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and this is eternal life.
For you and me, we accept this truth in faith, never having met Jesus in the flesh. Yet, every one of us has been blessed with the presence of saintly people through whom we’ve experienced the living, Christ-like presence of God.
We are blessed with the presence of some of these saintly people day after day as we journey alongside them. And then there are other dear saints that have passed on to join what the author of Hebrews calls “the assembly of the Saints” in God’s eternal kingdom. Loved ones, friends, and fellow church members, who had a great impact on helping us to experience a living and loving Christ within their personalities. Such a special saint may have been a grandparent, a Sunday School teacher, a pastor, or a certain elder or deacon in the church of your youth.
During the early centuries of the church, there were special days set aside to honor distinctive saints of the church but “All Saints’ Day” was established many years ago to honor all martyrs and saints who may otherwise be left out of the annual church calendar. As the years progressed, this unique event was later expanded to include faithful believers in proximity to our own personal walks of faith. During this time of year in our fellowship at Barry Christian Church, we find ourselves rather busy with the many tasks at hand in preparation for our annual Turkey Dinner. This year the Dinner will be held on the Thursday and Friday of November 5th and 6th from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., but as All Saints’ Day falls this year on the Sunday prior to our Turkey Dinner, November 1st; possibly it is also a good time for us to pause for a time in the business of our activities and offer thanksgiving for those beloved saints on whose shoulders of faithfulness we have ridden as we’ve experienced the joys of being nurtured and led into a meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.
Sunday, All Saints’ Day, November 1st, is a day worth remembering the saintly people in our lives.
Blessings to you as the fall season continues and we’ll see you at the Turkey Dinner!
Pastor Dennis

With an extra hour of rest, we look forward to seeing you in Sunday School and Worship the next morning, November 1st!
Thank You, for the Congregation’s Thoughtfulness during
Minister’s Appreciation Month
I am deeply touched and am most appreciative of the cards I have received
with a bountiful number of loving signatures from members of our
congregation and gift cards that will be a significant blessing to Carrie and
myself as you remembered us during Minister’s Appreciation Month in
October.
For your genuine compassion and living love for others in service to God’s
kingdom on earth, Carrie and I are most privileged to be in service with all
of you here at Barry Christian Church.
Thank you!

Tree in the Foyer outside the Sanctuary and buy the items
found on the leaf. Bring the items on Sunday morning and
place them under the tree. Thanksgiving food boxes will
then be made for needy families from the Pathfinder and

children.

Thank You, Gail, for Your Many Years of Service!
On Sunday, October 18th, Barry Christian Church was
privileged to honor Gail Roller with a lunch and dessert
of chocolate cake (a favorite of Gail’s) after the 10:30
a.m. worship service.
All of us at Barry have been profoundly blessed by Gail’s
compassionate and attentive service as our congregation’s
Administrative Secretary for more than twelve years.
We are comforted to know that Gail and her husband,
Curtis, will continue to be in our presence and in
volunteer service with us at Barry Christian Church,
but Gail’s retirement from the position will give her more time to care for her grandson, Fynnley.
Kimberly Pukay is pictured with Gail as Gail was presented a framed collection of photos from her
time of service that also included signatures of church members on the matting, as well as cards and
gift cards as an expression of our thanks.
Thank you, Gail!
Thank you everyone, from the bottom of my heart for the beautiful expressions of gratitude and love for my years of
service at Barry. We had so much fun as a family and I appreciate the time everyone took out of their day in my
honor. I LOVE the picture frame with your signatures! What a thoughtful gift. Thank you for the gift cards and for
the many cards I received. It has been so much fun to read them. We enjoyed the meal and especially - the choco-
late cake! Mmmmmm
It was heart warming to see so many people from the congregation show up at my party. What fun! It was a joy to
see all your faces.
When I first started at Barry, it was to have a “job” - something to fill the hours while my sons were in high school.
For me, being a church secretary was a wonderful way to
combine the heart of ministry along with the administrative drive
that is also a part of me. What started out as a “job” quickly
turned into love for all the people of this church. It would be hard
not to. You hear every day of the congregations hopes, their
praises and yes - their pain and the sadness's that come with life.
It is impossible to go home at night and not worry about how
someone’s operation will go. It is impossible to not cheer with joy
at someone else’s accomplishment. Thank you for letting me be a
part of your lives all these years! I’m so happy for that to continue,
just in a new way. So, please change your emailing records for me
Sincerely,
Gail Roller

A message from our Family Life Director – Jim Frentrop
Attention young singles--
Have you heard about “The Purpose Driven Life”? It’s a 40-session spiritual journey
to ask “what on earth am I here for?” Think about this—you didn’t create yourself,
so there is no way you can tell yourself what you were created for. Make sense?
The Purpose Driven life was popular about 12 years ago. Several of our Sunday
School classes have participated in this discussion. I too was on that bandwagon,
and was so impacted that I left my career in IT and went back to college to earn a
Masters in Social Work. Oh there were other variables that played a role in that decision, but I give much credit to
Purpose Driven Life for leading me in the journey that changed my life in such a profound way. I can’t promise you
will be so transformed by participating in the book discussion, but I do promise that you will see things a bit
differently.
For example:
The purpose for your life is far greater than your peace of mind, or your happiness, or your personal
fulfillment—if you want to know why you were placed on this planet, you must begin with God;
You may choose your career, your spouse your hobbies, and many other parts of your life, but you don’t get to
choose your purpose;
Knowing God’s purpose for creating you will reduce your stress, focus your energy, simplify your decisions,
and give meaning to your life.
The Purpose Driven Life is well-grounded in scripture:
Everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him (Collossians 1:16b Msg)
If people’s thinking is controlled by the sinful self, there is death. But if their thinking is controlled by the Spirit,
there is life and peace (Rom 8:6, NCV);
It is God who directs the lives of his creatures; everyone’s life is in his power (Job 12:10);
I am your Creator. You were in my care even before you were born (Isaiah 44:2a, CEV).
The Purpose Driven Life book is available on Amazon.com, and there are plenty of used copies for around
$4 dollars. There’s also a companion journal with thought-provoking questions and plenty of room to write your
thoughts. But don’t let a lack of book keep you from joining us, we will be happy to share.
Please join us during the Sunday School hour, we meet in the room just down the hall from the Upper Room and
across from the nursery. I look forward to making this journey again, with you!

Operation Christmas Child - Due date to return filled shoeboxes -
November 22
Shoeboxes filled with little items to send to needy children overseas. Brochures and plastic shoeboxes are at the back. Just check out the number of shoeboxes you would like to fill.
Best Gifts to pack in Operation Christmas shoebox
For any age boy, what they really want is a soccer ball. Brand new nice short-sleeved shirts (with no writing or pictures on
them. Kids in other countries may not be able to read English or the character will have no meaning for them) for boys and
girls. Kids may have few clothes and often wear old, ripped, hand-me-downs, so nice new shirts are really appreciated and
will probably fit. Small flashlight with batteries (Most families don’t have electricity so a working flashlight is gold!) A good
quality plastic plate, bowl, and/or cup (Practical and also special.) Soap AND a plastic soap dish that has a cover. When you
bathe standing on a big rock in the dirt as kids may have to, they really need the soap holder. And families never have
enough soap. Toothbrush in a toothbrush holder. Again, the plastic case for the toothbrush is really great when you don’t
have a sink/counter/tiled bathroom but rather brush your teeth outside squatting over dirt and need to keep it in your room.
Pencils, erasers, colored pencils, and sharpeners for all school-aged kids. And good quality pens for kids aged 10-14, in black,
red, green, and blue.
Great Gifts
Jump ropes, Band-Aids, Hard candy and gum, Comb. Hair elastics or head bands for girls, Marbles, Harmonica, A simple watch for older kids, A solar calculator for older kids, Sunglasses for older kids, Socks
