PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

i n typical fall fashion, Mooredale is a hive of activity! Our nurturing preschool opened up its doors for

another exciting year, welcoming those arriving back from summer break and greeting warmly all of our new youngest members. Soccer and sports took to the field again, a new roster of fantastic programs were introduced and once

again, Soctoberfest was a hit with our adult soccer community and provided a great day of competition. On the homefront, two of our staff members recently entered parenthood: Stephanie Chu, Pool Manager and front desk staff, had a little boy, Hudson, and Chris Keem, Soccer Manager, welcomed a daughter, Carina, last week. Congratulations, best of luck and happy sleeping to both Steph and Chris! November marks the end of term for our Board of Directors as we prepare to vote in the proposed slate at our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, November 18. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Board members who will be departing: James McNee as Pool Director, a solid presence with a wealth of experience and insight, along with a keen sense of humour; Katharine Lake Berz who took on the Volunteer & Community Liaison role with such enthusiasm, organization and innovative ways to honour our volunteer base, the most critical aspect of Mooredale; Erik Mathiesen, our long-time Treasurer who always manages to churn out favourable reports and reassure us that the sky isn’t falling; Rachel Busbridge who will be moving out of the Preschool position and has provided extraordinary guidance and initiatives for our little people at Mooredale; and Shuchi Stanger as Past President, whose historical perspective is always greatly appreciated. As my two-year term as President comes to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Mooredale Board members for making my tenure such an enriching experience. I have loved every minute of it and credit must go to this amazing team for the extraordinary collaborative effort, hard work and good humour. Meetings are a pleasure to attend with lively discussion and support being the framework with which we have moved forward as a community organization. Mooredale occupies a very special corner of this city and I know that there are only great things in our future! Of course, Mooredale cannot operate without its dedicated staff. Joanna Ingram, Catherine Loeffler and Stephanie Chu provide friendly faces and ongoing support in the front office with all manner of administration; Susan Li remains our greatest asset in accounting and we welcome our new caretaker, Ignacio Mateo, who will take on the day-to-day tending of this big old house. Eric Musselman put together a banner summer for many day campers and continues to offer innovative programming for young and old alike; Chris Keem, Blake Koester and Breanna Van Abbema work hard to keep our soccer program among the best in the city and provide a wide variety of other sports to keep our youth active,

all year long. Carolyn Burgess and her competent preschool staff succeed at keeping Mooredale Preschool top of its class through a stimulating, thoughtful environment that focuses on mutual respect. The final shoutout goes to Marjorie Booth, our Executive Director, who deals with all and everything on a daily basis, always with a smile and with many years of wisdom. She steers the boat with confidence and enthusiasm and never wavers from her commitment to making Mooredale one-of-a-kind. Thank you, Marjorie, for allowing me to work so closely with you and see first-hand all that you do. You are a gift to our community. All the best to you and your families as we head into shorter days and colder temperatures. Enjoy the season ahead and never hesitate to reach out to all of us here at Mooredale! Best

Update On Syrian Refugee Sponsors – Rosedale United Church

An outpouring of support from within the community, including many Mooredale members is leading to as many as 8 sponsorships being put in place in partnership

with the Refugee Committee of Rosedale United Church. With the experience of this group (47 sponsored refugees over past 15 years, including family recently arrived from Syria) and a standing sponsorship agreement with the federal immigration folks, community groups will have support and cooperation to move these acts of compassion along the complex path. Watch for details about a fundraising event set for Sunday November 8 at the church (‘5,000 Miles’) featuring top performing artists, some of whom will also be involved in the morning Remembrance service that day (‘This Sound Is Not The Fury’) with a special focus on the displacements of war. the lifeblood of Mooredale is in our members being active in our events and day-to-day activities. We live and

breathe on the participation in our year-round myriad offerings, along with relying heavily on our tremendous volunteer base. Of course, the success of this model is dependent upon us building and running top-notch activities in a rather competitive Toronto marketplace, as well as in our

membership being made aware of what options are available for their family members. Mooredale currently uses several channels to build awareness and participation. In print, we utilize our Mooredale News newsletter, our Recreation and Camp guides and a number of flyers and bulletins. Online, we have our excellent website and several social media options. Coordinating all of these channels in a sophisticated manner allows us to reach our marketing and Association goals. While all of these cost funds to operate and the right mix can be difficult to build, they ultimately help us stay in communication with our members and partners. We also have a strong group of partners (Rosedale Tennis Club and Champion Tae Kwon Do to name just a couple) and a growing network of advertisers and sponsors. All of these groups are attracted to Mooredale due to the demographics of our membership and the activities we operate. Over 90% of our membership comes from the 8 postal codes that surround the Mooredale House and this area is comprised of educated, affluent, active families. It’s not the right market for every company but for some, we offer excellent fit and the opportunity to build brand awareness and engage in meaningful dialogue. When I joined the Mooredale board in 2014, I challenged all of my peers to become ambassadors for the marketing and sponsorship effort and I am now extending that offer to all members. I am asking everyone to think practically about:

a) how can you help attract new members to Mooredale?

b) what companies would want to advertise to our members?

c) what partners would you like to see us work with to make the Mooredale better?

Perhaps you own or work at a firm that would make a good partner or you do business in your personal life with a company whose services would be appealing to other Mooredale members. 7000 heads are better than one and personal relationships are the key to us getting a substantive discussion going with a potential partner. We have a wide number of appealing options to offer to our partners, including the cost, frequency and activity or method.

While we are going to pursue this effort in a discrete manner that respects the DNA of Mooredale, it is important that we continue to grow and plan for a healthy future. the Nominating Committee, chaired by Shuchi Stanger, is pleased to propose

the following nominees for consideration by the Mooredale members at the Annual General Meeting for the 2015/2016 Board of Directors. These nominees and any others received by the deadline of October 9, 2015 will be those from whom the 14 Directors will be elected. The 15th position on the Board is reserved for the Past President.

David Woods, President, David, his wife,

Kimberley Graham, and their 4 children

have been Mooredale members since 2002.

They have participated in many Mooredale

programs, including sports, summer camps,

the pool and Terry Fox Runs. David has

coached soccer, hockey and flag football.

He is Vice President of Tricap Properties, a

private real estate company.

Lia Mathiesen, treasurer: Lia Mathiesen

is virtually a lifelong Mooredale member

and second generation treasurer. Raised

in Rosedale, she did a brief stint in the

Saturday morning soccer program before

realizing she had no eye-foot coordination

and was both a camper and a counselor at

Mooredale Day Camp. Lia has a Bachelor

of Commerce from Dalhousie University

majoring in Finance but with markedly

better grades than her father. She’s

currently working in trading compliance at

ITG, an electronic brokerage firm.

Kirk Lynn, Marketing & Sponsorship:

Kirk has over 20 years of professional

sales and marketing experience and is

the President of Connection Sponsorship

Marketing, based in Toronto. Prior to

founding his own firm, he was Director

of Sponsorship, Marketing and Business

Development at Canada Running Series.

Kirk, his wife Laryssa and their two girls,

Sophie and Sascha, have been Mooredale

members for 7 years. Sophie is currently

the Captain of the girls U13 Rep soccer

team. The family are also members of the

RCYC. Kirk holds a Master’s of Science in

Management of Telecommunications from

Syracuse University. He is a member of the

Sponsorship Marketing Council of Canada.

Joanne Pauli, Mayfair: Joanne and her

family have been Mooredale and Pool Club

members for over twenty years. Joanne

has been President of the Whitney Child

Centre and President of the Whitney Parent

School Association. She has been co-chair

of the North Toronto C.I. School Council, the

UTS Parents Association, and FOPE (Friends

of Public Education). She is the Founding

President of the Metro Mothers Network

(Mumnet), a non-profit organization which

runs support groups for mothers of pre-

schoolers throughout the city. Joanne is a

former President of the Mooredale Pool

Club. She is a long-term member of the

Mayfair Committee; her roles have included

managing the Baking Booth, coordinating

the Mayfair food and beverage teams, and

chairing Mayfair since 2009. Joanne and her

husband, James Barrass, are realtors with

Sage Real Estate Ltd., Brokerage.

Jason Rude, Membership & Database:

Jason and his wife Mona have been

Mooredale members since 2009 and have

enjoyed the many benefits of Mooredale

programs and clubs, especially as it involves

their 2 children. Having volunteered at

Mayfair for the last few years, Jason is

excited to continue serving on the board

and support Mooredale’s prominent role in

the community. A resident of Moore Park,

Jason is currently the Director of Supply

Chain Services at Plexxus, a shared services

organization serving hospitals in the GTA.

He enjoys competing in triathlons to stay in

shape and considers the Mooredale pool a

vital part of his training regimen.

christina cavanagh, Orchestras and

Concerts: Christina Cavanagh has been

a Mooredale Orchestras and Concerts

volunteer since February 2008, and

its managing director from 2011. She

contributes professional assistance in

marketing, promotion, audience, website,

fundraising and revenue management of

the three entities – Music & Truffles, Concert

Series, and Junior, Intermediate, Senior

Youth Orchestras. Her background is a mix

of business – executive management in

profit and not-for profit entities, as well as

academic, having taught at Ivey Business

School, and Rotman School of Management.

She is author of the book “Managing

Your E-mail: Thinking Outside the Inbox.”

Her most recent long-term assignment

was serving as Chief Marketing Officer

for a mid-size financial and data services

firm. Currently, she is an independent

management consultant and tries to find

time to practice piano

Diane osak, Program: Diane and her

husband, Steve Hurowitz, have been

Mooredale members since 2003. Along

with their two young daughters, Samara

and Julia, they regularly enjoy many of

Mooredale’s offerings, including pool club,

soccer club, Mooredale day camp, Mayfair,

and numerous lessons and programs.

was a key factor in their decision to raise

their family in Rosedale, where Steve grew

up. Diane is a lawyer who currently works

in the Risk Management group at Ernst &

Young.

Doug Reid, Property: Doug has been

a member of the Mooredale family on

and off for over 45 years. Married with six

children, Doug is currently the Manager,

Customer Support in the Facilities and Real

Estate Division of the City of Toronto. In the

past, Doug has been involved with the Pool

Club Committee, coaching Soccer and T-Ball

and has been on the Board for a number

of years assuming the role of President for

1995/96 and again for 1998/99. Doug is

currently serving as Property Director.

Anuja Sharma, Volunteer Director: Anuja

and her husband Shalesh are past residents

of Rosedale and are still very much a part

of the fabric of community. Both of their

children attended Mooredale Preschool.

Lalana (14) graduated years ago and

Arya(5) is presently in senior kindergarten.

After several years of being a stay at home

mother, Anuja started her own business

of organic, fair trade Darjeeling teas and

spices. She is actively involved in the parent

committee for the Mooredale Preschool.

She has also served in several capacities on

committees at Rosedale Public School. On

a weekly basis she volunteers by cooking

in a soup kitchen. She is committed to

volunteering as much as possible and giving

back to the community. In her limited spare

time one can find her reading, meditating,

doing yoga or her favourite activity –

travelling with her family around the globe.

husband, Scott together with children

Jack, Sam & Lily have a long and varied

history at Mooredale. Mooredale has been

a constant in the lives of the Case family-

-from the warm and wonderful preschool

to the bustling fields of Mooredale soccer,

and the wintry evenings of outdoor house

league hockey. This brings me finally to our

favourite Mooredale activity: the pool! I’ve

been very happy to support the pool and

staff, having served on the pool committee,

as staff liaison, for 3 seasons.

christina Staikos, Preschool: Christina

became a member of Mooredale in

2010 after she and her husband George

moved to Moore Park. Her daughter, Julia,

attends preschool at Mooredale, as did

her son, Nicholas. The entire family enjoys

participating in the various programs and

activities that Mooredale has to offer.

Christina has a Bachelor of Arts degree from

McGill University and a Juris Doctor from the

University of Toronto. Before the birth of her

children, Christina worked as a lawyer, first

in private practice on Bay Street and then

later on as in-house counsel.

D’Arcy Finley, rosedale tennis Club:

D’Arcy has been a member of the Rosedale

Tennis Club since 2003, and has served

as its President since 2009. He, his wife

Rebecca, and two daughters, live in

Summerhill.

Alain Strati, Soccer Club: Alain and his

family have been Mooredale members

since 2006. He has coached House League

soccer at the younger age groups, as well

as the Boys Rep 2002 team. The entire

family has been involved in numerous

Mooredale activities and programs. He

now has two children playing Rep soccer at

Mooredale, including a daughter in the new

RDP program. He is also the past President

of the Moore Park Tennis Club. Alain is a

communications lawyer, specializing in

broadcasting policy and copyright issues.

charles Zimmerman, Sports: Charles is

a 53 year old Residential Real Estate Broker

and the married father of 3 small children;

Cameron 9, Christian 6 and Harper 3. He

and his wife Nicole call Moore Park home

where Charles is the third generation of

Zimmerman’s in the neighbourhood. As

a life long Mooredale member Charles is

a coach/sponsor of Soccer, Hockey, Flag

Football and Baseball with all 3 children

enjoying these sports activities as well as

Mooredale pool throughout the summer

months. Charles serves (d) on several not

for profit board including The Badminton

and Racquet Club of Toronto, the Kettle

Association and has fundraised for the Heart

and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, World

Wildlife Fund Canada, Deer Park Association

and a number of provincial sports bodies.

When not shuttling kids around, Charles

can be found tinkering with his boats in

Muskoka, or playing squash, tennis or any

sport his children have taken up.

The final position on the Board is reserved

for the Past President:

carrie Scace, Ex Officio – Past President:

Carrie and her husband, Patrick, have

been Mooredale members since 2002,

along with their two children, Matthew

and Jonathan. Both boys have been avid

participants in soccer, softball, flag football

and hockey while Carrie enjoyed many

years with the Mooredale women’s soccer

league. A former Albertan, Carrie holds a

B.A. from the University of Alberta and prior

to making the decision to stay at home

with her children, she owned and operated

tutoring centres in Vancouver and Calgary.

Along with being a dedicated runner, Carrie

has a Can-Fit Pro designation and works

part-time as a personal trainer. Carrie

also sits on the Mayfair committee and

spent two years as Mooredale Soccer Club

President.

And they wonder why it takes me so long to make my way from my Preschool office in the coach House to the Mooredale Administrative office in the Main House…

i suppose it really should only take 2 or 3 minutes… however the route takes me past each Preschool classroom and activity area, including the playground and on each journey, at least 3 or 4

per day, I just can’t help but make slight detours here and there, as there is always something exciting and engaging that draws me in. This morning I stopped to watch our Chickadee nursery children enjoying a music class with Mischi, each child dancing with autumn leaves in hand to light hearted music. Around the corner in the Kindergarten class, the children were donning their ‘pinnies’ in readiness for their walk to the local fire hall to deliver a wagon overflowing with items from their food drive. Down the stairs a short detour to the right and the children in the Chipmunk room are engaged in ‘circle’ activities, a quick stop in the kitchen to see what’s for lunch and then off through the playground, where the Toddlers are enjoying bubbles, sand play, trikes and song. Into the Main House and I have a brief visit in the Main House nursery class, where the children are in the midst of their French class avec Mlle Juliana. Finally, I make my way up the stairs to the office

… and that’s why it takes me so long to make my way to the Main House Administra-tive office.

And it’s not too late to join us for the current school year! We’ve opened a few additional spaces in our morning Nursery and Kindergarten classes as well as our Afternoon Toddler program. Please contact the Preschool office for more information.

9:30 Workout with Rebecca Bell: Come on in out of the cold, and feel good while doing it! There are fitness classes Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, and a Pilates class on Thursday. Sign up for one or all four! Meet some other ladies from the neighbourhood and strengthen your body at the same time. Creative Movement: Creative Movement uses structure and free movement to help each child discover his or her body’s capabilities. Learn to Ski: Our popular Learn to Ski program for 4 – 12 year olds will return this winter, in partnership with Earl Bales Ski & Snowboard Centre. Learn to Skate: Starting November 30* at Rosedale Park, the popular Learn to Skate program is back on Mondays and Wednesdays after school. Even In The off Season our Pool Doesn’t Sleep!

i bet, like me, you have one of those pieces where we’ve just added another coat of paint over an old coat over an even older

wonderful it looks. In September they “diamond ground” all those coats of paint off our pool (all the way back to the 1970s!) and we’ll start 2016 with a brand new finish! Speaking of the off season… If you know anyone interested in joining the Pool, now is the perfect time for them to get on the waiting list. In past years we might have had a long wait but right now only a few names are on the list – I can (almost) guarantee that anyone on the wait list today can be swimming next Spring. There is no cost and no obligation. Anyone interested should call 416-922-3714 x 100. And one last bit of news… On October 21 we held our Pool Club Annual Meeting and members elected a Pool Club Executive team of returning and new volunteers to offer advice and support to our staff colleagues. I am thrilled to report Kedrin Case is the new Chair of the committee. In the next months Kedrin will keep you posted on the 2016 staff team and all the improvements and changes for next year. SOCTOBERFESTOn October 4 we held our third annual Soctoberfest Soccer Tournament. This year’s tournament hosted 11 teams, and crowned champions in each of our divisions (Does – our all female division; Pros - more serious folks; and Joes – more fun, and a little less serious). We’d like to thank our staff, participants, and sponsors – Amsterdam Brewery, Junction Craft Brewery, Civello, Toronto FC/ MLSE, and GP8 – for making the tournament a great success. OuTDOOR ICE HOCkEYWinter is fast approaching, and that means it is almost time for our outdoor hockey season to begin. Our league is perfect for those looking to play hockey that are not into the super serious competition. We have Technical Coaches come in on a monthly basis to work with the players and coaches and feel this adds to the practices the coaches run on a weekly basis. MOOREDALE SOCCER CLuBIndoor Soccer Registration for our indoor soccer programs is currently open! We’re running 2 sessions for our U4/U5 (2010/2011) and U6/U7 (2008/2009), also we have divisions for players at u9/u11/u14 on Saturday mornings. Session 1 starts at the end of October and wraps up at the beginning of January, and Session 2 begins the week of January 18 and runs until the end of March. The sessions will feature skills training with our Technical Coaches and then games. Everything is run out of the Monarch Park dome on Wednesday nights from 5:30-6:30pm. 2015 outdoor Soccer Recap With sunny skies and a gentle fall breeze, Mooredale Soccer Club players participated in the final day of soccer for the 2015 season – Cup Day! It marked the end to yet another successful outdoor soccer season, with both Riverdale Park and Rosedale Park playing host to some excellent games. Our U4 to U10 divisions enjoyed a final day of games at Rosedale Park, and were treated to some tasty snacks provided by our returning division sponsors Forest Hill Orthodontics and Tim Hortons. Riverdale Park hosted the final games for the U12 and U14 divisions, and crowned champions in each after tough matches in the championship games. Congratulations to all the winners in the U12, U14, and U17 divisions!

With the help of our Technical Trainers from Rep Baseball teams in the area, we will be running clinics for coaches and players at the start of the season to help them refine the skills to make this an even more successful season! VOLunTEER APPRECIATIOn & AWARDSOn October 3 we held our Volunteer Appreciation event to recognize the contributions of our hard-working volunteers. This year, we presented Nick Thadaney with the Volunteer Appreciation Award, recognizing him for coaching 10+ teams in the various sports offered here at Mooredale. In attendance at our Volunteer Appreciation event was Ron Smale, the president of the Ontario Soccer Association, who awarded Mooredale Soccer Club with the OSA’s Club Excellence Silver Award. Mooredale SC was also awarded this season with a donation from the Canadian Soccer Association’s Mondelez Pride and Joy Campaign. We’re honoured to have received these awards, and look forward to continuing our efforts to provide quality soccer programs for our members!

It was a gorgeous sunny day on Sunday, September 20 for the 35th Annual Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research in Rosedale – Moorepark.

Over 320 participants and volunteers ran, walked, rolled and biked on a lovely Sunday afternoon.

This year we were joined by cancer survivors and cancer researchers who wore red and purple t-shirts. Many people were running in support of someone they know who is fighting cancer, and others in memory of a loved one.

A number of volunteers were exceptional in their fund-raising efforts, contacting many people and raising significant contributions.

In the courageous spirit of Terry Fox himself, the man who ran a marathon every day on his historic fundraising run 35-years ago, each and every participant and volunteer made a difference.

It looks as though our funds raised have surpassed those of 2014 by at least 10%. In Ontario alone we are looking at having raised over $12 million dollars this year. Great effort everyone and see you next year!

Considered by many to be supreme, England’s London Haydn Quartet was born out of a passion for the composer. Formed in 2001, they strive to emulate pure 19th Century sound through their use of gut strings and classical bows. Adding to their uniqueness, they collaborate regularly with clarinetist Eric Hoeprich with whom they recorded the Brahms and Mozart quintets on the Glossa label. As a quintet, they have performed at the Concertgebouw, the Library of Congress, Yale University as well as appearances in Switzerland, France, Germany and Czech Republic. American Eric Hoeprich has specialized in performing on historical clarinets. He has performed as a soloist with early music conductors such as Sir Roger Norrington and Christopher Hogwood.
