Bob Spiel, MBAProviding time-tested insights into personal and group leadership, Bob Spiel brings audiences a refreshingly unique take on the core actions and mindsets needed to unlock the talents and gifts inside each of us. Drawing on his experience as a practice management and leadership coach to doctors and practice leaders throughout the country, Bob helps participants discover new ways to challenge old limitations. Whether sharing insights from mentors who worked with greats like Stephen Covey and Brian Tracy, or giving leading edge examples from clients today, Bob

cuts through the fog and brings participants his trusted perspective on personal growth and practice success. Bob is a personal and business coach to dental practice leaders and owners from Portland to Boston. His firm, Spiel Consulting (spielconsulting.com), provides proven business solutions in practice leadership & management, as well as associate hiring and transitions. Before dentistry finding him almost 10 years ago, he served as a hospital and surgical center CEO and turned entities from near bankruptcy to profitability. He has spoken nationally at the Hinman Meeting, AADOM, AADPA, PALS, Carestream, numerous state meetings as well as internationally. Bob is also the author of the recently released book, Flip Your Focus: Igniting People, Performance and Profits through Upside-down Leadership.

Flip Your Focus: Igniting People, Performance and ProfitsThrough Upside-down Leadership (morning)A motivated team of loyal, “in-powered” team members will take a practice to the next level and beyond — and “Upside Down Leadership” is the catalyst to achieve this. These simple principles radically change the usual dynamic of high stress and high burnout to building a synergistic, results-driven, high performance culture. This presentation strips away the mystery from true leadership and team building.

Igniting the Leader in You (afternoon)In today’s competitive and demanding dental world, personal leadership is needed from every member of the team to make their practice thrive, while creating a true team culture. Learn a landmark personal leadership principle, and be ready to use it Monday morning in three key areas of your practice: coaching and communicating with and between team members, leading patients to accept treatment, and building a fully engaged team through personal accountability.

Posterior Composite Resins - Materials Selection and Placement Techniques (morning)Are posterior composite resins different – does the material make a significant difference in the longevity of these restorations? This presentation will provide the success and failure of bulk-placed and cured composite resins comparing them to incrementally placed posterior composite restorations. The clinical success of flowable composite in posterior applications as well as highly filled bulk placed composites will be shown. Matrices, use of bases, and finishing techniques will be presented to improve clinical outcomes. See a clinical comparison between bulk-filled flowable and highly-filled materials to compare when each should be used to improve their success.

Preventive Materials- It Is Not Just a Toothbrush Anymore! (afternoon)As you are reviewing the patients for the day, you see a patient’s name who strikes fear into your heart, since you know things will not look as well as they did when you placed the restorations. This presentation addresses preventive techniques and materials for the three most commonly seen high caries risk patients and details how to treat each one. Specific treatment methods are addressed for patients requiring additional oral hygiene procedures, those with little saliva flow, and the sugar-loving patients. Treatments for these patients differ — learn to apply specific effective methods to reduce the caries risk for each patient type. Treatment will be tailored for their clinical situation and cases reviewed. Beginning with Icon, fluoride releasing and other ion releasing materials as well as chemical approaches, most patients’ oral health can be improved.

Antibiotic Stewardship (morning)Increased awareness about the growing problem of microbial resistance with related challenges of treating infec-tions caused by resistant organisms has resulted in a global initiative to improve the appropriate and safe use of antibiotics. Antibiotic stewardship refers to a set of recommendations for clinicians to follow to guide decision-making and management of infections with antibiotics. These recommendations are relevant to all healthcare professionals and their related practice environments, including dentistry. This presentation will review strategies to promote antibiotic stewardship among dental professionals. Proper use of antibiotics, including antibiotic use for premedication in at-risk individuals will be reviewed based upon current scientific literature.

Medication Safety in the Dental Office (afternoon)Managing medications safely is a critical component of the office safety plan. Dental professionals should closely examine the steps taken to help reduce risks for medication errors in their practice settings. The purpose of this course is to review strategies to improve medication safety in the dental office. Learning Objectives:• Identify common medication errors, including prescribing faults, errors with prescribing, dispensing and drug

administration, and erroneous monitoring.• Demonstrate proper prescription writing skills according to the Institute for Safe Medicine Practices.• Discuss the benefits of drug information systems that should be used to obtain information regarding drug

indications, contraindications, and adverse events.• Discuss simple strategies to reduce risks associated with medication use in the dental office.• Discuss safety guidelines for prescribing controlled substances. • Review proper methods of drug storage and disposal.*T his material is the intellectual property of the author and may not be reproduced or distributed without written permission.

The Pearls for When and Why to Refer to a Specialist, or Should I Just Use Antibiotics Instead? (morning)This lecture will teach clinicians about the extrinsic health factors that affect their patients’ ability to heal. The lecture will also discuss the intrinsic factors where the clinician should communicate with the patient’s physician to get predictable soft tissue healing. Lastly, an old wise man told me, “Your eyes can only see what your brain knows,” so we will discuss the past medical history of a patient and the findings on a current medical chart and how they can have huge effects on your patients and their soft tissue healing.
