Birthdays . . . continued Moye . . . continued Lecomte, and later with Mademoiselle Fresne, Marie Morel, the women in China- Frances Jen and Catherine Lo. John Martin entrusted them with responsibility and recognized their talents for evangelization. His mother taught him that a priest should be poor. He felt great compassion for the poor and for those in need, especially for equal opportunities for women.

John Martin had a good ear for learning languages. Besides the French and German language from home and later the Latin and Greek needed for scripture study in school, he mastered Mandarin and could speak it with authority in Setchouen China. He felt an urgency to leave the people in China with many written prayers in their own language.

A deep respect for the creed, culture and customs in China gained him acceptance among the people. I believe that John Martin Moye today would be open to diversity, new intercultural experiences and open to welcome immigrants from other lands. He would have discouraged any racial prejudice as non-Christian. Perhaps he would show compassion for the inequality identified by the Black Lives Matter Movement and the view the importance of human rights for the LGBTQ persons.

John Martin saw political differences escalate into horrendous violence and war in France that took many lives. He recognized the power of the French government yet he let the Holy Spirit guide him to escape from the violence in his homeland. Today he would tell us to pray unceasingly that we may continue to recognize the truth and not accept the propaganda of fake news. To look deeper at our reality and at the cause of what is not working. Moye would want us to see the real needs of the people today.

For personal reflection:

What have I learned from Moye’s life that I can apply in today’s world?

How can I apply Moye’s teachings in my day-to-day life of service?

How will/can I become an agent of change as Moye did in his lifetime?

Focus on recognizing “the truth” and how that can help you see and be “truth” to others.
